QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) Holy f***, Viciedo and Beckham are NOT stepping up. They are awful baseball players. Viciedo actually showed justifiable improvement in the second half. His power increased (Iso from .151 to .175), patience increased (BB rate from 4.8% to 5.4%), and control of the zone (K-Rate from 21.4% to 19.8%). He hit .291, compared to .246 in the first half. And, compared to last year, he swung at fewer pitches outside the zone (38.9% to 38.1%) and swung at more pitches in the zone (63.7% to 72.2%). He is still young and talented enough to actually become a productive member of a baseball team. I could care less what they do with Beckham though. I think it's time to give Semien an opportunity there.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) I'm down 29 in a PPR with Brees and Sproles. I should be fine, but I have the same feeling I am going to end up with only 25 out of them lol Brees can throw 4 TDs to Jimmy Graham then, and throw for 300. And Sproles can catch 5 balls for 30 yards. Now we both win. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) We can probably forget about the Sox signing high-profile free agents, including Abreu. The Sox are going to have to make smart trades, smaller free agent signings, and gasp, actually draft and develop some position players. Garcia and Semien look to be a good start at rebuilding the offense, but this is probably going to take a few years to get back to contention. Except that Hahn has already said that if a free agent makes sense for 2015 and beyond, they'll be right there. That fits McCann and Abreu perfectly. I genuinely think that the Sox will end up with Abreu. It simply makes way, way too much sense not to.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 12:47 PM) LOL, how am I moving the goal posts, when I never defined them? You and your boy Greg are making up what my definition of "good" is, and then trying to use whatever you come up with against me. You never asked me what I consider a good season, only that whatever you THINK I will say. Then define it. To me, 81-81 is average. The Sox won 85 games last year. I don't understand how 85 wins and a second place finish is really that much different than that. Then again, I fail to see how a 63-99 season can be classified as "good" on any level. As I said, I think a season like this was necessary so the Sox can ultimately get a more accurate feel for the team - this team overall wasn't that much different than the 85 win team from a year ago, but it seems to me that team "overachieved" and this team "underachieved" and that their true talent level was probably in the 74-78 win range (before the Peavy and Rios trades, as the true talent then probably dropped down to 68-72 wins). Necessary does not mean good though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 12:23 PM) He put up a 3.56 era in te Cell in 150 innings and that's with being jerked from the pen to the rotation for 2 years and tiring at the end. For guys with 100+ innings that puts him 64th out of 150+ pitchers. He had a similar ERa to Cole Hamels and slightly worse than Verlander who pitches in an easier ballpark. If he's a teams number 4 starter then they've got a great shot at a World Series because that team has 4 #1-2 starters. He was a solid number 3 this year and that's only because of the bullpen/innings bullplop we do. If he only has te value of a number 4 starter then trading him is crazy because he's already better than that. If he's going to maintain an ERA in the 3.50's though, he's going to have to improve his peripherals. He's going to need to walk fewer, possibly strike out more, and produce more ground balls. With the peripherals he put up this year - high fly balls, lots of walks, and almost a hit an inning - he's going to be far likelier to put up an ERA around 4.25-4.50 in the future. Fly balls end up bouncing off walls and leaving ball parks , and when you do that in combation with walking everybody, you'll have outings where you end up giving up 6 runs in a heartbeat. I like Santiago and only suggested that Trumbo represents pretty equal value. I don't know that I'd make that move. Still, Santiago has a lot of room for improvement.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) Ive been kind of thinking that one of my best friends ladies is into me. There is really nothing good that can come of this. Im not even interested. That is all. Let everything play out. If she makes a move, it's time to shoot her down and tell your buddy. If she's willing to cheat in a situation like that and ruin two different relationships at once, she's going to be willing to cheat at any other time too.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) HE'S ON PACE FOR 44 TURNOVERS. He is totally Aaron Brooks part 2. Big arm, can run a bit, but he's just a moron and turns it over all the time

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 11:41 AM) 3B IMO is a bigger problem than first base. We have a guy at 3B who could play for one team in baseball apparently, ours, in Gillaspie. If I had to pick one thing, it'd be having Dunn retire. If you give me five things, 1.) Dunn please retire. 2.) Get rid of Kepp/Gillaspie and let Semien play third if we can't get a free agent. 3.) Get a new CF and get rid of DeAza. 4.) Get a new 2B and get rid of Beckham. 5.) New catcher. Do you look at the numbers? Gillaspie more than held his own against right handed pitching and actually provided positive value this year, albeit a small amount. The White Sox got negative overall production out of 1B, and Konerko was among the worst players in the majors. 1B is by far the biggest hole on this team. Yes, 3B can be upgraded upon, as can a lot of positions, but if you get someone in who provides value of 3.0 WAR at 1B and you limit Dunn's ABs against LHP pitching, you are already talking about adding 6 wins to the team. Personally, I think the position Semien needs to play this year is 2B. I'm done with Beckham.

I think you hang on to him. The Colts and Bills swapped Jerry Hughes - former 1st round bust - and Kelvin Sheppard. The Colts wanted and needed a guy who could make tackles in the middle and the Bills needed guys who can create pressure. There's no reason to think the Bears wouldn't be able to do that at some point in the next year or so.

I'm up 116-77 and he had Colston and Sproles going tonight in a PPR. I feel confident but deep down I just have a feeling that he's going to end up getting like 42 combined out of them. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Plus Trumbo is going be making a lot more cabbage than Hector the next couple of years. It won't be a significant amount.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) I for one, am glad the Sox spent money on AJP and Iguchi rather than saving it and signing the next Joe Borchard. It wasn't necessarily the wrong thing to do. Now with the new rules, those days are pretty much done. In fact, I believe JR was a big voice in the new rules. Why do you always come back to Borchard on this? Next time it could be BJ Upton or Stephen Strasburg or Buster Posey, unless you prefer the White Sox not spending on amateur talent and drafting Lance Broadway, Aaron Poreda, and Kyle McCulloch.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) But when you throw in their age and experience it seems the guy under contract for 4 years has much more upside while the 28 year old with a long track record has more downside risk. Trumbo's "long" track record is 1 more year than Santiago. Santiago is also a pitcher, so there's signficant risk there too. We can argue this either way. Really, I don't think this trade would be that far fetched nor leaning favorably to one side or the other. Frankly, I think there would be people on both sides that would love it and hate it.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) I feel like you made a convincing case about why that would be a weak deal for the white sox, not a fair one. A 2.0 fWAR player for the next 4 years compared to a 2.5 fWAR player for the next 3 years? Both can improve, but Trumbo is really the only one of these two who has chance to be a truly impact player.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:43 AM) Granted I have only see bits & pieces of Bills games this year, but yes I am f***ing serious. Manuel will not be the Bills starting QB 5 years from now. Based on the first 4 games of his career? I think that's ridiculous. He went 18/27 with 2 TDs against a New England defense that has been great thus far, torched a weak secondary against Carolina (they still have a good front 7, and this is what you're supposed to do against weak defenses), struggled against the Jets defense (because a lot of QBs do struggle against the Jets) but still kept the game close and helped get 20 points on the board, and then beat the defending Superbowl champions yesterday in a game in which he played well enough to win. This is after he missed the last 2 pre season games due to a minor knee surgery. His numbers through his first 4 games are better than Matthew Stafford's numbers were during his rookie year, and he had some dude named Calvin Johnson he could throw to. So yeah, I think you're crazy.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) Hector just put up a 1.5 WAR season, Trumbo just put up a 2.5 WAR season. And that's with 11 games as a reliever in his first full year as a starting pitcher. I think you can extend that and make the assumption that, given 7-10 more starts this year, he'd have been around a 2.0 fWAR with the potential to be improve on those numbers. He's going to be 26 next year and is still under team control for 4 years. Trumbo is a below average defender, is going to be 28 next year, is under team control for 3 years. Frankly, I think Santiago for Trumbo would be pretty fair, all things considered.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:16 AM) Wasting a 1st round pick on a non-franchise QB is never a good move. Are you f***ing serious
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) No, tanking is unlikely to magically net you a franchise-saving player. As much as we've focused on that #3 pick in the first round, remember that the Sox also get the #3 pick in every round, along with the additional slot money that comes along with those picks. While it doesn't carry the magnitude of the NBA, having the #3 pick is still better than having the #19 pick, and you get to play the exact same number of postseason games. Also, I think the thing the 99 losses did more than anything was magnify the lack of offensive talent, especially in the area of OBP, that this organization currently has. In 2012, scoring the 4th most runs in the AL and being in a pennant race until the last week of the season was a total fluke, and it blinded everybody, myself included, as to how little offensive talent was actually there. I agree with all of this. I really do think the Sox as a franchise needed this as a wakeup call to make drastic changes to the team's landscape.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) Imagine how good it could have been if they waited until the 2nd round to pick Manuel. I hope this is a joke. If not, then this argument is terrible - all indications were that Philadelphia was set to pick him with their 2nd round pick, and the Jets, Jaguars, and Browns also had interest in him too. If they don't take EJ with the 1st, then they have to pass on Alonso, and then they have to pass on Woods, and suddenly they end up with none of the guys they wanted.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 08:28 AM) It's early, but the Bills look like they had themselves a hell of a draft. EJ Manuel Robert Woods Kiko Alonso Alonso already has 4 picks. EJ is still really raw and misplacing a lot of throws, but he's managed the team well thus far and he'll get better too. Woods and Alonso are good. Alonso is such a heady football player - first round talent that fell due to minor character concerns and he's been one of the best players on the defense so far. Marquise Goodwin, currently on the shelf, was a superfreak returning kicks in the preseason too. This is also why draft pundits are so dumb. So many people ripped the Manuel pick, but frankly, they wanted a QB, traded down, and got their guy. With QBs, you can't ask for more than that.

QUOTE (daggins @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 07:22 AM) Sizemore will be lucky to get 1yr/5 mil. His health is a total wildcard and he wasn't great the last time he was healthy. Santiago is not good enough to get Trumbo+ . Lefties with control issues are pretty common and they still have money to blow. If Sizemore gets anything more than a minor league contract, his agent will have succeeded greatly. Trumbo is a free swinging, low OBP right handed slugger. He has the kind of potential to hit 40+ homers, but he could just as easily turn into Mark Reynolds too. Santiago, on the other hand, has put up good numbers 2 years in a row, including very good numbers this year. If the Angels declined that trade, then you walk away because you aren't dealing with a sane organization.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 02:06 AM) Fathom, if Gillaspie is our 3B next year, I predict 99 losses again. Got to get major leaguer regulars on the field. I don't understand why you would seemingly pin this all on Gillaspie. Frankly, by fWAR, your boy Paul Konerko was the worst regular in the AL this year, the second worst player overall, and the third worst player in the majors at -1.8 fWAR. Can you understand why so many people want to move on? If the Sox bring Konerko back as anything more than a platoon partner and player/coach, then that is a bigger indication to me that they are not serious about competing.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 02:14 AM) Wrong. Last year was a good year. 85 wins is barely above average, and they missed the playoffs. How is that a good year? You are moving the goal posts. This was not a good year by any stretch of the imagination. You can argue that the team needed this year, but arguing that this was a good year is absolutely ridiculous.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 27, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Even Cooper has said on the radio that Rienzo has some mechanical issues that might not be fixable -- thus the problems with walks. stay tuned. Rienzo has considerable work to do before I'd count on him. You are always such a ray of sunshine

Just so we are aware, Grady Sizemore has not played in a game since 2011, had not played effectively since 2009, and is already 31.
