Adam Dunn has 2 golden sombreros this year. Both have come in September. He had 3 last year, and 3 in 2011 too. I wonder if he doesn't wear down as the year goes on. Finding a strong backup for him so he can actually be a platoon player (which he should be at this point in his career) will also save his health down the stretch and keep him fresher. Last year, on September 21, 22, 25th, and 30th, he had 3 strikeouts each. And, once he wears down, his bat speed slows down a great deal. I think you can win with Adam Dunn, and I think you can do it with him hitting cleanup. He just can't do so against left handed starters. If he ends up with more than 75 PAs against lefties, he's really playing too much. He's at 140 PAs against LHP now.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 09:26 PM) I didn't like Wacha around draft time, but man he's something. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that the Cardinals organization can develop players with the best of them. Fun team with a bright future for sure. His stuff is unreal. You could tell he was pretty damn nervous heading into the 8th as he wasn't taking any more than 5 seconds between pitches. He looked really wild in those final two innings, but I think that was mostly nerves.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 09:29 PM) I know historically the difference between the 3rd and 5th pick is very little, but I still want the Sox to pick before the Cubs next June. We've gone this far, might as well get the highest pick available and see what we can do with it. It's still going to be a huge upset if they don't. It's been that way for about 2 weeks

QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) Who signed Keppinger, Hahn or Kenny? The White Sox

Notable 5th picks - Posey, Wieters, Braun, Teixeira, Drew, Vernon Wells, McDowell, Mercker, Gooden, Dale Murphy. Hopefully they win out and get that pick, right? Seriously, this b****ing about the difference between the 3rd pick and the 4th pick is trivial and f***ing stupid. Oh joy, we can be happy

Jesus Michael Wacha is good. I don't know how anybody hits him. He hides it well and he just throws darts. Watching on TV it looks like it's about 102 MPH

QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:52 PM) He was better than Thornton this year. Solid job, great ERA. Yeah, I'm just gonna disagree with that. Purcey's lucky his ERA wasn't 4.50 or 5. Guys simply don't get away with stranding 88% of base runners over the course of a full season.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:47 PM) Here's to hoping that this was why the .325 Keppinger became the .253 Keppinger. Robin basically said that this simply isn't the case. On April 22nd, Keppinger hit his low point for the year with splits of .153/.149/.167/.315. In the 100 games he played following that, including 87 starts, he hit .274/.310/.348/.658. Frankly, expecting anything more out of him than that is expecting too much.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) Wow................. Is 90 plus losses and playing like crap in September 2 years in a row the most RV can do? Keppinger playing like dogs*** is one of the biggest reasons why the Sox lost 90 games this year, so yeah

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) Ventura weighs in. South Side Sox @SouthSideSox 2m "It affected his throwing, but swinging a bat? That was pure, 100-percent Keppinger. Literally, it's the most he can do." I don't think Ventura likes Keppinger very much

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 4h and congrats 'stros for locking up No. 1 pick 3rd year in row. sorry #fish. consensus pick Carlos Rodon, lhp, is a Miamian The Devil Rays/Rays were the first team in the history of the modern draft to have the #1 pick 2 years in a row. That was 2007 and 2008. The Nationals then had it 2 years in a row in 2009 and 2010. The Pirates stole one in 2011 (taking Gerrit Cole, who's already a monster), and now the Astros are the first to ever have it 3 years in a row. Think about that for a second...in the first 40 years of the Rule 4 draft, no team had ever had the first overall pick two years in a row. In the 8 years since that anniversary, we've had 3 teams get it consecutively, and now the Astros have had it 3 years in a row.

They can win these. They are all but guaranteed a top 5 pick and being 2 1/2 ahead of the Cubs for the 3 spot and 4 ahead of the Twins puts them in a good position to get the #3 pick regardless. Still, Cleveland has killed them all year. No need to think they'll stop now.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) The play he got hurt on was a horrible play call. I dont think you need to do designed runs with him. He was throwing the ball well to really bad receivers and is a threat to take off when his swiss cheese line breaks down. A designed run was just moronic. No I agree, Denver was playing zone and spying all night and they were waiting for that opportunity. Really, he's lucky he didn't break ribs or get something rolled up in that Bronco sandwich.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) God I hate nothing more than publicly financed stadiums when the worth of franchises continues to skyrocket. It's even better when city councils keep getting suckered into the idea that these behemoth debt mountains actually bring money into the city. NOPE

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 12:55 PM) I don't think any of us know how much coaching matters because we haven't played the game at this level. I think there are examples of some managers being so bad it affects the team. Look at the KC Chiefs. There is some evidence that buffoons Todd Haley and Romeo Crennell were so bad it affected performance and win/loss record. Andy Reid has them 3-0. As far as baseball ... I don't think any of us know for sure if Robin is to blame for the fielding/baserunning problems and the hitting problems. I think everybody agreed Bevington was a horrible manager. Why? Was the record all his fault? Again, I don't think we know. Does Robin know what he's doing or not? Did Ozzie? How can we judge this? Royals fans think Ned Yost is the worst manager ever yet the team is 10 over .500. Is it all just fodder for talk shows?? Is it all cliche? Why do the Angels stink? Dunno. #1, football is a completely different animal than baseball. In football, if you have good coaching and a good QB, you can almost always pencil a team in for the playoffs. There's no other sport where coaching matters more. #2, Bevington made a call to the bullpen when there was no one warming up. He showed complete incompetence. That's akin to a head chef serving a plate and not putting the food on it. #3, both Ventura and Guillen have shown competence. We know everybody's feelings on the latter. #4, The Angels suck because they have no pitching, and DiPito spends all the money that Moreno gives him on hitters. Why? No idea.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 12:09 PM) he got crushed on that hit, completely sandwiched between those two defenders. The read option has adapted pretty well to the NFL. The problem with the read option is that when a team has it snuffed out, QBs lose chunks of memory
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) Too bad the Rangers are looking at not making the playoffs. What is up with those scrappy Athletics? There's still a very real possibility in the AL that we have a play in game for the play in game

QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) I don't get how NE is #3. They've gone 3-0 against 3 of the worst teams in the NFL. MIAMI has a far more impressive resume at this point, as does Chicago.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 09:20 AM) It's less prevalent than it was 20 years ago, but the perception still exists that minorities moving into a neighborhood decreases property values. The civil rights movement was only 45 years ago. Imagine what the perception will be in another 20 years. -

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 23, 2013 -> 05:19 PM) Whites people do this all the time, they just don't announce their rationale so bluntly. In what way? To me, people will subconsciously (or consciously) associate with people of the same race, but if me and my white friends are hanging out and a black guy comes over to talk to us, we aren't going to say "go back to your own kind." We'll openly talk with him and have no problem with it. Just the same, white people will typically locate themselves in like neighborhoods, but if a black person moves in (or Latino or Asian or [name minority]), nobody is going to have a problem with it. They are going to have more of a problem if someone moves in - regardless of race - and starts causing problems that can threaten their immediate safety. Quite the contrary in this situation. This guy, Craig Cobb, is saying "I own this property, I want to sell it to nothing but other white supremicists who also believe that white people are superior to all, and then we want to take over the local government here. I really dislike minorities and want them gone and out of here." -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 23, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) Yeah Brown is flat out better than Wallace. Speaking of cashing in, I need to trade Gio Bernard. Been offered Julian Edelman but I'm afraid to pull the trigger. Why? I think Bernard will eventually be the full time guy in Cinci, as in by the end of this year.
