  1. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 11:36 PM) It would be great if Braxton Davidson has an awesome senior year and works his way to a top 3-5 pick. Athletic left-handed 1B who is considered the best pure hitter in the draft and was hitting upperdeck shots at the Metrodome when he was 16? Sign me up. Put Viciedo at 1B for few years while this kid develops, and then slide him right in to 1st base. I don't see any other good offensive lefties in our system for the future, especially none at 1B (sorry Andy Wilkins, you are my AAP, but let's be honest). Barnum is decent, he's just years away. I think he could have a big year next year given a full, healthy offseason. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2013 -> 06:56 AM) Drafting a 1B at #3? Ew. I agree with this too unless the guy is considered a virtual lock to come up and start hitting right away, and I don't think we'd see that.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 03:25 PM) Why? http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/9/26/4773...r-field-yankees
  3. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) I agree with you on all that. I think Dick Allen is making a strong contrary case because we (all of us) have had to hang our hats on the quality of the rotation as the bright spot long enough that we are perhaps overrating it a bit. I think the idea that a team ERA of 3.99 can be 8th in the league screws with people a bit too. In our minds we still believe that to be good when in reality a league average pitcher is putting up a 4.00 ERA anymore.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 02:26 PM) It's above average, but let's be honest, it's not THAT far above average. Sale is elite, QUintana is very good, Santiago is solid, Johnson will probably be solid, and Danks is a disaster that may never recover. A lot of what makes the rotation valuable is the upside of Johnson and Santiago, which is real, but who knows when it will show up. Danks is far from a sure thing at this point. There are definitely rotations I'd take above the Sox - off hand, Texas, Oakland, and Detroit come to mind, with Boston and Tampa right around there - but it's a good foundation. I think Danks can be a 4.00 ERA guy again, but it's been a while since he threw this many innings.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) No, but other bad pitchers will be with the team every year. It's almost impossible to avoid. I will let you believe that a rotation featuring Chris Sale, Hector Santiago, Jose Quintana, John Danks, and Erik Johnson is average. This is a petty argument.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 12:36 PM) The pitching staff's performance was pretty average in the AL. Of course you could make a point the defense will make their overall numbers look not as good as they should have been, and it would be hard to argue, and they dumped Thornton, Peavy and Crain, but they are pretty much in the middle of the pack in most of the big categories. The other parts of the team performed so poorly, even an average-like performance seems spectacular. That is including Dylan Axelrod and his 5.68 ERA over 128 innings as well as a few other guys who were absolutely terrible in their time up. They will not be in the team's long term plans.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) As much as you guys hate Ozzie, I think when Robin ultimately quits or gets nudged out we are going to hear it's because of his personality, laid back and all that, players taking advantage of him by loafing, etc. It's all a revolving circus. You want a loudmouth manager; then he runs his course and you want a quiet professional; then he gets stepped on and you want an aggressive guy again. I liked the way Ozzie told it like it is saying the team was total horses***, etc. Addendum: I do realize you all disagree with my last sentence so let's not argue about it. I'm just stressing Robin's personality will be what we hear about when he's ultimately gone. Too laid back, etc. I don't think I'd call Ventura laid back. He gets on guys quite a bit. I'd say his temperament is better described as calm.
  8. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) No one is talking about one group of player here. We are on pace to lose 100 games and have the 5th worst run differential in the league, something's got to give. The pitching was definitely the stronger area this year, but like I said, Peavy and Crain missed too much time to be that high. There is no way Thornton should be higher than a C and Donnie Veal gets better than a D. Guys like Kepp, Konerko, Axe, and Floyd should all get an F, and Danks would be a D in my book as well. He had one offensive player with a grade over a C and that was Ramirez. Everyone on the offensive side was "average" or worse.
  9. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 10:56 AM) Same. Something about a group of guys who take the game of baseball way too seriously just doesn't do it for me. Pssh, says the guy who skipped prom to go to a White Sox game
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) Manuel was managing when that stoner hit the big leagues I suck at the life
  11. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 10:41 AM) Also, Fathom's grades are WAY too generous. How can a 100 loss team has more A's and B's than D's and F's? How can Crain and Peavy's contribution to the team be graded as A and B, respectively, when they both missed significant time? Because the pitching staff has been pretty damn good this year?
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Congrats to the Kansas City Royals on a 28th consecutive season without reaching the playoffs. In today's wild card era, it truly takes effort to accomplish such a feat. The Nintendo Entertainment System was released in the United States for the first time right around the same time the Royals were last in the playoffs.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 09:41 AM) I feel like I don't even remember what it's like to have Rose on the team. I wouldn't mind sitting Noah until Christmas to help with his foot come playoffs, though you can't really plan for anything with Plantar Fasciitis. But Noah can't come back until he's 110% then
  14. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 08:54 AM) Gomez felt Sari. That's assault, brotha
  15. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 08:03 PM) And then there's the VEntura strategy. Over-use pitchers, never sit Alexei (he still won't in September garbage time) intentionally walk Chris Getz...heck, whenever a team has a runner on and base open when they can walk off, intentionally walk the batter to clog the base (that nonsense has cost us several games). 2 runners on down 2 in the 9th? Bunt the ball. He's a lousy manager all the way around. I think you just wrote a post describing 90% of baseball managers
  16. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 07:40 PM) I remember playing against Fielder's AAU team at some tournament. He played for Chet Lemon. It was a 14 and under AAU tournament and he was 11. Was he a nacho stealer at this point in his career?
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 05:37 AM) Say what you want about the Braves, but it was over the top by Gomez. He screamed as he hit it than stared at Maholm the whole time. He's probably getting drilled tonight if he plays and it will be well deserved. The Braves are in the playoffs and the Brewers are near the bottom. Gomez looks like the idiot he is. The funniest part was Gomez acting tough but hiding behind guys. MLB ran past highlights of Gomez and Maholm's history. Goes back a few years. Gomez has taken Maholm yard a few times and enjoyed it than Paul started throwing at him. You mean his whole team, as they held him back?
  18. QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) Brian McCann had an AJ like reaction to this- http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30934665 I love it. Makes me want us to go after him more Gomez never touched home plate. Run shouldn't have counted if the Braves had been smart about it.
  19. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 06:05 PM) That stoner the Sox got for all those old guys back in '97. I bought his rookie card, still cherish it. We're just lucky Bevington was managing then. Had it been Ozzie, he would have started for the next 10 years.
  20. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 12:53 AM) Let me keep spelling it out for you. Beckham is the worst. He's absolutely awful. Video games won't even let you create a Gordon Beckham. He's the biggest flop I've seen in any sport. Holy s***, he sucks. I actually hate him. Really? Had no idea, I couldn't tell by your 8 posts before this one or the 5 after this one. I'm with you on the "Beckham's defense is overrated" thing, but you have apparently not looked at his numbers. And you are apparently unaware of how much better Beckham has actually been than Paul Konerko. At the plate. While he's played 2B. To say "Gordon Beckham has been one of the worst players in baseball this year," you would be making the argument that the Bucks were one of the worst teams in the NBA last year WHILE they made the playoffs. It makes no logical sense. Take off the blinders. I don't care if he is or is not on the team next year, but recognize him for what he is - a slightly below average second baseman who missed a lot of the year with a wrist injury.
  21. One of my favorite players I remember cheering for and liking as a kid was Danny Tartabull. He only played the 1 year, but I just loved him.
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) Id force kids to read Huckleberry Finn. I don't think I read Huck Finn until college. Tom Sawyer was the big Mark Twain novel we read in high school.
  23. Sox are gonna win this game 7-4 or something stupid just because it doesn't make any sense.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) De Aza LF L. Garcia 2B Ramirez SS Gillaspie DH A Garcia RF Viciedo 1B Danks CF Semien 3B Phegley C Axelrod starts. Viciedo getting a look at 1B. I can't see the Indians scoring less than 8 runs. This is the lineup I want to see every game from here on out
  25. I have always loved middle relievers with stupid good stuff. Marte (under Manuel), Gordon, Politte, Cotts, Jenks (in 2005), Thornton, Putz, and even Nate Jones now stick out. Hermanson was awesome too. Until I found out about how big of a d-bag he was I loved Brian Anderson, even if I knew he sucked offensively. I always loved Uribe too.
