QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) The most they've ever spent on an invidual contract is Danks' $65 million, right? That's more than the last contracts that Buehrle and Ordonez earned with the Sox, right? Yes. I don't believe that matters. Comparing Ordonez's last contract is silly, especially considering they were ready to give him 4/$60 before he went down with injury.

Yep, I agree. These relationships are the worst to end because it's not as if there's anything really between you two other than being at different points and wanting different things in life. It sucked for me when I did it but it was the best thing for me because I look back and I know I'd be terribly unhappy had I stuck with it.

Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) You know, the one thing this lineup has been missing is a left-handed bat that swings for the fences and struggles to hit .220. Well this is silly and short-sighted. The last thing the Bulls need is an expensive point guard who will miss the whole year while he sits and he's not injured. Same argument. Let's not look at their career averages and try and figure out what they'll actually do, let's base their entire career based on what they did in their worst overall season, regardless of the reason it was the worst. -
Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:50 AM) But if I turn that around and ask who has the longer career, the best fullback or the best distance runner...things come up a lot more even, don't they? I think of distance running, or sprinting, as something people do best in their 20's and maybe early 30's, same as fullbacks, and there are a few fullbacks who do last longer than that because they're good at it. Long distance runners can run until they're 60 years old. Wide receivers occasionally last until they're 40+. Only the best fullbacks will, and no halfbacks do. Players whose body takes a beating do not last as long and begin breaking down around the ages of 28-30. Players who are typically more athletic and run typically break down around 30-33. I don't see anything wrong with the argument that McCann and Granderson are at the same baseball age. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) And for every foul tip McCann takes, Granderson probably runs an extra mile or two, with starts/stops and sprinting thrown in. So who lives longer, long distance runners or fullbacks? This is obviously a little too simple, but it generally gets the point across. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:33 AM) I disagree very strongly. They'll be fine. Not with their current QB situation. We saw the Chiefs go 2-14 last year with a very talented roster simply because their QB play was terrible. Change the coach and the QB and suddenly they're 5-0.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) Who was that on the Reds lineup and where in the lineup did he hit? Todd Frazier hit 6th. Frazier wasn't much better, but he was definitely better. Phillips was roughly equivalent to Beckham this year at the plate. Could you imagnie Ventura batting Beckham cleanup for the sole purpose of breaking up two lefties? -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:22 AM) Unless Jacksonville is coming to town I think they'll win a game or two this year. Gabbert is one of the worst QBs to ever play in the NFL, and while Henne can act as an OK backup, he is a terrible starter too. I think they have enough talent out wide and in the backfield that the should be able to squeak one out - probably against Buffalo or Arizona - if Henne gets hot. I also think they need to look towards other QBs too just to give them a shot.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) I don't mind this as much...particularly given that his 1 playoff game was against a tough lefty pitcher who had absolutely mauled their 3 lefties several times this year (Liriano). I don't know his bench but it wouldn't be that hard to convince me that benching as many of those 3 as possible was the right move against Liriano, not just breaking them up. I have no problem if you want to split them up, though I think in this situation, it probably would have been unwise to do so. Don't you think you should use your best right handed hitter between them though? -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:16 AM) UZR does not think he's any good out there at all and hasn't been in years. I have no problem with Granderson if he's viewed the right way. He's an extreme platoon player and has been for most of his career. He bashes righties but hits like Alexei Ramirez against lefties. He strikes out a lot and pulls down a tolerable but not great amount of walks. He's clearly on the downside of his career but he's also a veteran presence at this point. He played only ~50 games last year and he was trending down the year before that. Is he a regular CF? No. Is he an everyday player? Maybe he'd like to think so, but he'd be a lot better off playing 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 days to stay healthy. Should he be facing lefthanded starters? No. He'd be good on a team where there are a couple right-handed hitting corner OF's who either are up there in years or who you might want to protect from some of the hardest righties, and where the team also has the DH spot open now or in the near future. If you could give him 120-130 games against right handed starters, maybe 2/3 of them in the field, that should work as long as most of those games in the field are not in CF. We can make that work but we have to have a manager willing to do so and he has to be willing to do so as well. Aside from having a DH for one more year, we do have 2 right-hand hitting OF's, at least one of whom has shown strong splits against lefties in several seasons. I would trust the GM to make that move, I'm not sure I'd trust either of the recent white sox managers to use him the way he should be used, which would wind up getting him banged up and on the DL and mostly wasted quite rapidly. He did not have nagging, chronic injuries last year. He was hit on the wrist in Spring Training and missed like 2 months, and it was like within a week of coming back he was hit and re-broke the same wrist. We can talk about concerns with power next year, but if you don't consider Gordon Beckham an injury risk, you really can't consider Granderson an injury risk either. -

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:09 AM) Baker never intentionally walked Chris Getz. But he did have Shin-Soo Choo sacrifice bunt 3 times this year. He also batted Brandon Phillips cleanup in the playoffs between Votto and Bruce - after Brandon Phillips put up a .706 OPS this year. -

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) If everyone is so adamant on punting '14 why would it matter if we stick Granderson in CF and then move him to DH/LF after next year? I actually agree with this line of thinking. Granderson would bring a few extra fans to the park, he still does have the ceiling of a 4 WAR player even though it's likelier he'd put up 2-3 WAR, and if he's only signed for 2-3 years, he can be used as trade bait in a year or two as well. So long as it's closer to $8-11 mill a year as opposed to $14 or $15 million, I'm OK with it. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) The problem with DeAza is that he doesn't quite hit well enough to be a good corner outfielder and he doesn't quite field well enough to be a good center fielder. No matter which place you put him, you are going to sacrifice either offense or defense. Now, if your roster is such that you have a RH corner outfielder you can platoon him with, that's the ideal situation. He's going to provide league average value no matter where you play him. He's a pretty average player. If you value and trade him as such, then I have no problem. If you trade him as if he's a 4th outfielder, you are not going to get nearly the value you should out of him. On a team like the Sox, I understand that he may not offer a great deal of surplus value, but there are teams where he even his league average production could be the difference between losing and winning a wild card birth. -
QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) I mean now, nearly 10 years later. I'm sure he was disciplined at the time and if Hahn and company think he'd help the team now then I'd hope the incident doesn't factor into the decision. Oh you're talking about bringing him in for 2014.....why? He's not a very good pitcher. I mean, right now, for righties out of the pen, the Sox have Reed, Jones, Webb, Petricka, and Lindstrom (assuming the option is picked up, and I believe it will be). Why do you want or need anyone else?

Among qualified outfielders, Alejandro De Aza was 36th in fWAR at 2.2, suggesting he is a second tier starter and roughly a league average player. Players like that are not 4th outfielders, no matter how infuriating they can be at times. -
This effected southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. Western South Dakota for 30-40 inches of snow. I was in Sioux Falls this weekend, and on Friday it rained for 5 and a half hours of the 6 hour drive down there. The drive back was much more pleasant.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 08:50 PM) Thanks for reaffirming my point. The last two guys that Sox really wanted were Dunn and Keppinger. Those two had historically terrible years their 1st year, but they fit a huge need for the team and the Sox paid a pretty penny for both. If the Sox bid $60-70 mill for Abreu, and come in 2nd, are you really telling me you'd be upset?

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 08:15 AM) Ian Rapoport said yesterday that 2-3 weeks is optimistic and it'll be closer to 6 weeks. They need to take time. They aren't going to win at this point, so let him get fully healthy. Let him learn by watching. He's got a chance to be a stud QB but he's so so raw right now.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) What's the Boone Logan story? Is the Rauch story more than the time KW "called him out" for leaving early?(which I don't think should be held against either) You don't think leaving the stadium early should be held against Rauch? Really?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) 1960, 1971 and 1979... It just seems like a long time because you're younger probably, and the last 20 years have been similar to what the Royals have experienced (except the Royals haven't been relevant since the 1980's), so it seems worse than the actual history would tell you. No, I'm saying 20 years in a row of sub .500 baseball destroys a fan base, especially after they were teased the past couple of years. Besides that, they still have a long World Series drought than the Royals do.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Sure, in the same way you would have been excited to buy a Quentin jersey, for example....although it's a pipe dream right now that Garcia is also going to lead the MVP voting for 5/6th's of a season in 2014. My comment is more aimed at wanting to have SOME reason (I'll take one) to believe in this organization turning things around. If we can never develop a single position player, all the pitching in the world won't make up for it. (And we couldn't even manage to get anything productive out of Francisco Liriano last year....therefore, starting to come over to the Dick Allen side on this one). And if we can't adopt modern baseball strategies/methods, like the Pirates or Rays with their defensive alignments/shifts/quantitative analysis, it's even bleaker. The fact that the Sox spent more than $1 million on an amateur international signing is all the more you need to know that things are changing. I think their farm system is going to be top 10-15 in the next 3 years or so.
