I bet they feel really smart going for the touchdown at the end of the first half. That's a decision that costs coaches jobs. That was the biggest no brainer take the points of them all, and the idiots tried to run a draw play against a 9 man box.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 08:24 AM) Im sorry, I see it in any thread remotely involving him right now. Sure he is relatively mobile, but his defensive metrics in no way show we belongs in CF. With defense being an enormous weakness of the Sox this season, I see no reason for the Sox to weaken themselves defensively further and put him in CF. He's played 207.2 innings out there. That's a sample size of 23 games. Fangraphs suggests that it takes 3 years worth of data for fielding metrics to become statistically significant, which is roughly the equivalent of 450 games. Currently, we have 5.1% of the suggested amount of relevant information. To compare this to something more tangible, this is like watching 31 at bats of a minor league hitter and declaring "HE CAN'T HIT." (of course, knowing this group, that sounds about right)

Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 09:32 PM) Well this is silly and ignores reality. One player is a 25 year old former MVP and the other will be 33 on Opening Day and has hit .247 over his last 2,490 at bats. WHOA SAME EXACT THING. Oh you mean the .246/.333/.484/.817 he's put up over the last 5 years, which would be incredibly valuable in the middle of the lineup? I understand not wanting him because he's old, but just say you don't want him because he's old and declining, because you are making yourself look silly with your other arguments. -

It is worth asking whether he'd do that in the heat of a pennant race though. At that point of the year, he just wants to get a look at the guy. I agree, he probably should have hit 9th though. -

You were offered James Jones for Philip Rivers and you came on here to ask? Jesus what for? Accept it, package Tommy B up with someone and get a stud somewhere else -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) Yeah, who knows. I have to lay the burden of the final say on Hahn, though, even if it's KW or someone else feeding him the recommendations. At some point, you have to look around and see that the plan isn't working out, you know? At least Franco makes a fair amount of contact and he was tearing the minors apart at a young age. This isn't Avisail Garcia who we think is a good prospect but has still been rather mediocre and hasn't put up a lot of great peripherals. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 03:49 PM) Lost the perfect game, but no hitter through 6 for Wacha. He is a stud

He was barking at hitters and then Cabrera kicked dirt in his general direction.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) Yeah, we could find a way to make it work, but the upgrade of Grand/Ethier from De Aza/Viciedo is much less than FLowers/Phegley to McCann, for example. I just mean that a corner OF is not our biggest problem. Given that Hahn was reportedly asking for Makiel Franco at the deadline for De Aza, I think he is aware of his potential value to other teams as well. I'm not certain what we'll see yet. Frankly, as was mentioned previously, we could see the Sox bring AJ back again. -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) A's win. Up 2-1. Why is Balfour a tool? If you are asking generally, I have no idea, but he has always been a complete tool and loose cannon.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) They aren't going after Granderson if he is $15 million a year. If he's significantly cheaper it makes sense. I actually know one of Curtis" best friends from UIC. I know he would love to play for the White Sox. I think this is a big thing too. If he is willing, he may be able to give a true hometown discount. I truly think he'll end up in Chicago and that it will be at a reasonable price. -

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) f*** that. If Granderson is the right player for the team on the field, then great, sign him up. But I'm sure the Sox pay a lot of money to people in a marketing department and Rick Hahn isn't of of them. I'm saying if Player A and B are identical in every way but Player A is from the area and Player B is from Mississippi, signing Player A makes more sense. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) McCann's 2012 was a shoulder surgery season and is way out line with his other career numbers. That' simportant information, but his 2013 proved that he has bounced back. Granderson is older and very clearly declining, and if he signed hium, we'd be the team gambling on his ability to return to form after injury. I think it's all relative though. Granderson's year was cut short by flukey injuries that, as you pointed out, could have terrible repercussions, but at the same time, maybe not. I don't want Granderson for 3 years and I don't want McCann for 5 years. But if you can sign Granderson for 2/$20 and McCann 4/$60, I'd sign both of them. You should still have enough left over for Abreu on top of that too. -

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) Should MLB teams really consider where a player grew up when putting together their rosters? From a marketing perspective, it doesn't hurt. Hometown boy comes home to play. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:37 PM) I'm sure she was being a bit dramatic for argument's sake. But I don't disagree in re: their differences. Just think it's a bit harsh to pin it on her. As I alluded to earlier, sometimes these are the toughest to end too because you don't view "different places" as a legitimate reason to end a relationship because everything else feels and seems fine. In reality, you will need the separation and, as time moves on, you come to realize how much better off you actually are seeking someone else with similar goals, timelines, and interests.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) Granderson LF, Viciedo 1B. Tank single-handedly turned many long singles into stand-up doubles this past season. Easily allowing 25 or 30 more runners in scoring position than a decent LF. 3 yr 36 mil with health and offensive bonuses that could bring him up to 15 mil per. If nothing else, this is reason to keep De Aza, not signing a 32 year old outfielder for 3 years. You sign Granderson in hopes of him putting up .250/.330/.470 with 30 homers, 20-30 steals at an effective rate, and reasonably good defense in LF or CF -
She could have developed palsy (nothing specified) where she can no longer safely care for children. She could have also just had a surgical procedure done where movement is limited. That she is actually going to school is one of hundreds of different reasons why it could be that way.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) All depends on the price tag to me. I think this is the key. A 2 year, $20 million deal would be perfect. A 3 year, $45 million is too much and not worthwhile. Hell, a 1 year deal would be good too. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) I think you are calling the STL/PIT series too early. I see that going to game 5. That series is either going to be Pittsburgh in 4 or St. Louis in 5. I see no way Pitt beats Wainwright in St. Louis.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:23 PM) I think you guys are being a bit hard on the lady...she wants to be on the Amazing Race...this isn't the Real World or something where she's going to be drilling other dudes on the show. I sort of side with her...he's been dating her for 2 years. Sure, they are young, but he's effectively saying he wants her to date him for like 8-10 years before they get married and settle down. A LOT of women are going to balk at that suggestion, especially in year 2. Some you can string along forever, but if you flat out tell them after 2 years that you might be willing to marry her 6 years later, I think most of them are going to be like "umm, no." I think a life long dream of being on the Amazing Race is a bit much, but I have no problem with what she wants or desires. I just think they are in different spots in their life and it's pretty much unreconciable differences.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) I thought there was on,y one golden boy. I should probably read the whole thread. Ha, I still agree that the Sox should move on from Beckham. I've personally seen enough of him. Maybe he figures it out elsewhere, but he certainly wouldn't be the first guy to come up and look good for 200 PAs to turn into and remain a mediocre to poor player for the remainder of his career.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) It was still ~80 abs against each, but yeah, I debated not putting them in there for that reason but thought they were gaudy enough to throw it in there. Moreso than those stats I think the .800+ ops vs RHP for 6 straight years is more of a "Justification" to sign him. I agree -
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) 265/14/56/731 in an injury plagued year 267/5/24/698 in an injury plagued year Beckham's defense is obviously better, but easily replaceable. Viciedo has a higher upside, better bat speed, a more fluid swing, stronger hands and consistently hits the ball harder. Advanced stats probably won't tell you any of that, but your eyes and ears will. Viciedo also doesn't have anyone in the organization pushing him. Beckham has Semien and Garcia. Even if Garcia hits 220, he appears to be a better fielder and has more tools. This was Viciedo and Rizzo. Just looking at splits, here's Rizzo over his last 1058 - .251/.330/.435/.765 And here's Viciedo over his alst 1016 - .260/.302/.436/.738

QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 11:54 AM) He was surprisingly ranked 12th and 14th in the league in walks in '11 and '12, so if he can put together a good year batting average wise than he'll put up a .350+ obp. He's pretty much the OF version of Adam Dunn and as a Dunn supporter I'm cool with that. Disregarding this injury plagued season he's put up an ops over .800 vs RHP every year since '06, and with all the RHP within the division that type of bat could really come in handy. His ops vs division opponents the last 3 years... Cle- 1.099 Det- .909 KC- .969 Min- 1.172 As far as De Aza goes, I'm with a lot of other people here, I hope he's not just made the 4th OFer or traded for scraps. He SHOULD have some value. As with looking at his numbers last year and using them as justice to not sign him is wrong, looking at the bolded numbers and using it as justice to sign him is also wrong. Consider the sample sizes in those scenarios.
