  1. Tekotte and Danks are both left handed while Short and Gartrell are both right handed. Worth considering.
  2. QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) Drunk vomiting or stomach flu vomiting? Big difference. Whichever one keeps DeWayne Wise on the roster
  3. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) To a certain point, parity is nice. If I were a Red Sox or Yankees fan, I wouldn't want my team to throw untold millions at Josh Hamilton (or Albert Pujols, or Zack Greinke, et. al.) to repair a "93-loss grease fire of a season". Boston is lucky that a Get Out of Jail Free Card like the Dodgers exists. I'd be stunned to see them test those waters again so soon. It's funny, though, that many seem to be dismissing those teams (at least partially- I'm not overlooking the age issues) because they didn't throw Ft. Knox at someone (for once). I don't think teams in that corner of the country are going to suddenly drop everything and take the Tampa (or KC!) approach, but to an extent- they may. I'll be sitting with my popcorn cheering for anyone or anything that's playing the Angels for the next few years. The Red Sox guaranteed $151.275 million in new contracts this offseason, and that number was nearly $185.275 mill had they signed Napoli to his original contract offer. And, unlike previously, they guaranteed that money to aging and/or mediocre players or they traded too much for another reliever with control problems. They could certainly be tough at the end of games, but all indications are that the offense is going to be mediocre and likely injury prone. If they are anything more than a .500 team, I'd be greatly surprised, and that's after they've spent all this money again.
  4. Arguing about the 4th outfielder is a little like arguing about diarrhea and vomiting. Regardless of which is actually better, an extended stay of either is going to be extremely unpleasant.
  5. I think the new system is far better than the previous one. Teams have to be willing to expend a great deal of money to garner any sort of compensation on the free agent market as opposed to the mere 120% of the previous salary (and not even that was a guarantee). This eliminates getting draft picks for guys like Randy Choate or Darren Oliver or whatever other absurd examples you can think of. This also generally assures that players that garner compensation are good, quality players, because you don't want to screw yourself and end up having to pay someone like AJ Pierzynski $13 million a year. It also avoids loopholes that teams like the A's and Red Sox exploited when they'd trade for a player simply because he was going to be a Type A or Type B free agent, offer arbitration (to see them turn it down), and scoop up draft picks for which other teams couldn't afford the financial risk (because while the Rays couldn't risk paying Felipe Lopez $4.5 million to be a bench player for them, the Red Sox certainly could, and the Rays would rather get something than nothing). Now, to be fair, this hasn't entirely been eliminated, but it's lot harder to submit three $13 million qualifying offers to free agents and avoid getting burned than it was $4 million and less. It also takes bad seasons out of the equation and values players based on what the league values them at rather than their numbers - Joe Doe, who is the pentultimate 5 tool player who happens to be coming off a bad season and injury plagued season, will still either fetch compensation or will be retained for 1 year and $13 million. Teams will still have literally 0 problem ponying up that draft pick for a really good player. I didn't hear anybody whining about it when Josh Hamilton signed. Why's that? But when Kyle Lohse - he of the 4.45 career ERA, the 6.55 ERA in 2010, an ERA below 4.00 in 3 out of 12 seasons, with an ERA+ of 110 or better in only 2 of 12 seasons, and only 1 season (this past season) being his only really good season - signs a contract for what is more than fair market value WHILE the Brewers give up a 1st round pick, there's a problem? To be polite, that just doesn't make a lot of sense.
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) I would love to watch Jones throwing lasers down to 2B just gunning guys out.
  7. I work for the local newspaper. There's this really hot chick there, and I'm pretty sure she likes me, but I can't build up the nerve to go and talk to her. Otherwise, the job is rather ho hum, not a lot to deal with. Anyways, on my lunch break, I go into a telephone booth, thrown on tights and a cape, and save the world from dangerous villains.
  8. I would guess they'd look to Gillaspie but Sanchez might have the size for it too. Of course, they should probably use Nate Jones. TRY AND STEAL ON ME BIATCH
  9. QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 09:47 PM) Screw it, lets get Billingsley instead We can just trade them Dye
  10. QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 08:20 PM) as an avid fantasy baseball-er, there's no one i liked more at the end of drafts than Ted Lilly. gimme that WHIP any day of the week. I could get behind Cap too. Harang has never been good - even in Petco... that's telling you something I actually feel the complete opposite of all of this. Both Lilly and Capuano are soft-tossing lefties who I think would get lit up in the AL, while Harang actually has a bit of velocity left (about 88-91). On top of that, Harang has put up a 3.60 ERA and 170 innings the last 2 seasons. Of course, I'd rather have none of them than give up anything for them too. The Sox have enough starting pitching.
  11. QUOTE (Cali @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) I don't know how Hamilton ever makes contact. He has a hitchier swing than Beckham... Bat speed. He gets it throught he zone about twice as fast as Beckham does and faster than pretty much anybody in the game.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Not sure if anyone posted this, but the Orioles won out. Ravens will play that Thursday night opener on the road. Glad to see MLB stick to their guns on this one. Fact of the matter is without some sort of concession from the NFL, there was literally 0 reason to move this game.
  13. I actually really like these sorts of acquisitions, trading for guys who have fallen behind or out of favor with their current organization. He's not going to hit for average - a career .257 minor league average tells that story - but he does have power and his strikeout rates aren't terrible. Best case scenario you have a guy like Bill Hall (probably not the .900 OPS season), and otherwise it doesn't affect anything.

  15. QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 22, 2013 -> 04:21 PM) Brilliant by Rodriguez to dribble into the corner, behind the backboard for an impossible show. That's just how Weber drew it up.
  16. What is that dude for Cinci doing? You have to know in that situation to kick the ball back out. They've gone over it 100 times. The Creighton McDermott's wins.
  17. He was a bad singles hitter in an independent league. He's going to be a bad singles hitter in the minors, and he'd be an even worse player in the majors. We are talking "may as well not swing a bat" bad. Maybe he could be Herb Washington, but I have very strong doubts.
  18. We'll do this again. QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Mar 22, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) My point is the opposite of what you suggest. There is no "proof" of when Danks could return to form. The closest examples of this kind of injury to a pitcher and the surgical repair and rehab suggest that the recovery may take longer than some, including Ventura predicted. He had no basis to make that prediction given that other pitchers who sustained that injury and had that surgical procedure took two years to recover. I am starting to discern an attitude or demeanor that is common to some posters. "We've discussed this....what proof do you have...." Are you a physical therapist? If you are, then I will concede all my points and listen to what you say. My gut tells me you are not. Now, this IS a physical therapist and his opinion with all the knowledge he has of the Danks situation... QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 22, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) The fact that he was throwing painfree on a regular schedule for spring training tells you he will pitch this season. The variable is how long it takes the strength to return. The capsule is structurally sound after the repair and scar tissue would be a good thing to reinforce it. It is a very thin structure. Many times it takes a while for a pitcher to get a feel for the new shoulder but the fact that he has been reported to be painfree is the reason to think he will be back and probably soon. This is an educated opinion. Your opinion, as well as mine and ss2k and generally anyone else on this board will be the aforementioned "blind, wild, uneducated guess." I'm going to trust the professional who has knowledge and an education in the field rather than random clippings from articles. Some of those injuries were 5-7 years ago (or more) and even in that time frame, I imagine the process itself has become better and more refined with superior knowledge to that which we had even those 5-7 years ago (or more). On top of that, the White Sox have about the best physiological staff in the entire MLB (which I point out by injury prevention and recovery rates, which ARE the best in the MLB). Now, you are completely entitled to your opinion (which I believe is wrong, but that's my opinion, so I can think that), and you can continue writing the same thing over and over and over again, because this will be the last time I try reason with to you. We realize there is a chance that this could extend out even into July or who knows how long. We have a physical therapist on the board who has indicated he believes otherwise. I'm going to believe him more than I'm going to believe a person who continues to use the same argument over and over when people didn't believe or buy it the first time it was brought up.
  19. Don't have the links handy - just saw it on my phone when doing some surf and turd - Bears were/are interested in Nick Barnett, Trestman doesn't like Cutler's mechanics and wants him to be more consistent, and he loves Forte out of the backfield as a pass catcher.
  20. Only on a pace to lose by 50 to a 13 seed, no big deal
  21. Kanas State know there's a game today?
  22. When I was like a 9th or 10th grader, I picked the entire Final Four correctly, but missed both National Championship teams. If I'd gotten the championship correctly, that would have been one of the best brackets of all time. I think I'm like 2 of 16 or 3 of 20 or something on Final Four teams since.
  23. This situation is as similar to Derrick Rose's as peanut butter is similar to car washes. Danks wants to get into games but the team won't let him. Rose has been MEDICALLY CLEARED TO PLAY FOR A MONTH but chooses to sit out because he is not "comfortable." Nobody knows, you're right, so idle speculation is rather dumb. I'm going to listen and appreciate what our resident physical therapist has said rather than dispute his educated opinion with my blind, uneducated, wild guesses. For all we know, it could be 14 years before he can pitch again, and by that point it's too late because outfielders have already been equipped with jetpacks and the apes have taken over, so f*** it.
