  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 08:16 AM) Its actually much closer to the Josh Fields situation. Many on this board were up in arms in 2008 when Crede was made the regular 3B. If you can't make contact in the minors, things tend to get a lot worse in the majors. If anything, Flowers defense has been overrated. Reading this board you would think he's some sort of defensive combination of Johnny Bench, Ivan Rodriquez and Benito Santiago. Except that Flowers can hit a fastball. --- f*** it. If you guys are going to be so butthurt about losing AJ that you won't even give Flowers a chance, then so be it. I'm looking forward to a change in the White Sox lineup - lord knows new blood is exciting, and beyond any of that, the Sox were never going to spend $7.5 million on AJ. If you can't look past the fact that the organization is looking to allocate funds elsewhere while trying to build towards the future while also being happy AJ ended up in a situation that is good for him both financially and professionally, then you are very short-sighted. I'm done with this stupid debate.
  2. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 06:18 AM) The one thing I can't get past in the Flowers debate is that he has not had a chance to play full time and prove he can be a good starting catcher. I'm sorry to see AJ go, too, but the move makes sense. Paying AJ more than $7.5MM for one year just because Flowers is unproven does not make sense. If July comes around, and Flowers is hitting .190 with a handful of homeruns, the Sox will have to make a decision and a move to improve the position. But right now, what else can the Sox do? Look at what some of the other catchers are getting paid. AJ is most likely overpaid for 2013. I personally think Flowers will be fine. He's not going to hit .300, but he's a good defensive catcher with a lot of power. Plus, as this thread is regarding the Sox looking for a LH bat, the money saved by not re-signing AJ can be used to pay for that bat if it comes down to that. The one thing I can't get past is all of the above, but then that people have already written him off. This is far closer to an Alejandro De Aza situation than it is a DeWayne Wise situation.
  3. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 04:15 PM) But AJ proved his value in MLB. Flowers has not done so as of yet. And has never been given the opportunity to do so. AJ was.
  4. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) Flowers never put up great numbers as a full time player in the minors, did he? You tell me http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=flower001tyl
  5. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) I said "if"! I don't know who they could get; I don't know who they'd want. Again, the point of my postings is, that I believe an owner of a sports franchise owes it to his fan base to field the absolute best team possible, (present) and/or to put his team in position to do so (future). By not re-signing AJ when the "jury is still out" on Flowers does not do this, IMO. With re. Konerko, his (trade) value may never be higher than it is right now. If you don't think the Sox can contend with the Tigers, Jays, Yankees, Angels, Rangers, A's, etc., in 2013 (as the roster stands on 12/26/2012, I do not think they can!), it's most probable that Konerko won't be around when the Sox will be able to contend. Does this make any sense? So how are you ever going to know if Tyler Flowers can be the catcher for the future if you don't ever run him out there as a full-time starter? I assure you that people understand why the idea of AJ coming back was appealing, but at some point in time, you have to let Flowers sink or swim.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 03:39 PM) Like Tyler Flowers?!?!?!?!?!? Perhaps.
  7. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 03:20 PM) Letting a 35 year old catcher walk WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANYONE AS GOOD is being cheap and stupid. You don't know this. We'll do this: if the Sox acquire a 1B prospect who destroys the ball in the minors, comes up for a cup of coffee and doesn't perform well, and the Sox don't bring back Konerko after this season, are you going to say that the Sox should bring back Konerko because "they don't have anybody good?"
  8. http://rangers.mlb.com/team/roster_active.jsp?c_id=tex Officially offiial, listed on the Rangers roster
  9. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 02:36 PM) This is probably the #1 reason I dislike Fisk. Sanders wasn't on his team and Fisk should have minded his own business. Deion Sanders should have told him to GTFOH. I don't mind it whatsoever. If a player is being a douchebag, let them know it.
  10. LaRussa being there is pretty cool.
  11. Well, to be fair, Jack Morris isn't worthy of being in the Hall of Fame.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) but gold gloveness It's really unfortunate that the Sox weren't able to bring in Jeter to replace Alexei.
  13. He's really not that much better defensively than Konerko either.
  14. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 10:58 AM) @Andy_Fenelon Between 2004-07, pick following Raiders' selection in first round: Fitzgerald, Rodgers, Whitner, Megatron. In 2011, the Bills could have selected AJ Green and Andy Dalton. Instead, they chose Marcell Dareus and Aaron Williams.
  15. QUOTE (Boogua @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) I think DPOY should be really interesting with Miller and Watt. I think Watt should definitely win it (20.5 sacks from a 3-4 DE? Wtf?), but we'll see. I think PFP has done a story that suggests that both Miller and Watt are basically equally valuable defensively, which is stupid to think about.
  16. Tracks rhymes with stacks, which is what I have a lot of
  17. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 09:42 AM) A previous poster mentioned Adam LaRoche...IF the Sox could find a taker for PK (prospects), I'd be all over LaRoche. He'd improve the Sox' defense tremendously, and is a solid bat. It's a pretty safe bet that the Sox won't trade Konerko to bring in Adam LaRoche.
  18. Then take it to any of the other threads discussing the issue.
  19. Regardless of my opinion on it, this doesn't seem to be the place for condescending remarks and comes off as tasteless and classless.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 24, 2012 -> 10:14 AM) Isn't Markakis an Angelos favorite? Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the Sox could get him unless they gave up about triple what he is worth. I'm pretty sure you're right about that too.
  21. I just want to eat my crow from nite before he has a chance to dish it out about the Colts. That was a really good call.
  22. QUOTE (striker @ Dec 24, 2012 -> 09:52 AM) So if you are Baltimore's GM, what more do you ask for? The other thing you don't mention is Markakis's salary. You are saving money which could be spent elsewhere. You could extend Floyd and shift your strength from RF to SP. I would say "I appreciate your inquiry but we are simply not interested in moving Nick at this time." The Orioles have Nolan Reimold and Trayvon Robinson who are essentially carbon copies of Dayan Viciedo. They have plenty of outfielders. They have a solid rotation and the best pitching prospect in the game. They don't need to deal Nick Markakis. If someone came and asked about acquiring Jake Peavy, what would you say?
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 24, 2012 -> 09:29 AM) I could maybe see the Baltimore one, but yeah, the others we are not giving up enough. Ramirez and Santiago for Upton? Beckham for Ackley? I don't even think the Baltimore trade is realistic. You can talk about Viciedo's future value all you want, but Markakis is a really good hitter. Considering Baltimore just won the Wild Card, they'd need more than Viciedo and a free agent to be Gavin Floyd. Arrietta is a guy that could be acquired, but he's not a major piece either. You are right though. That trade is the closest one to being possible.
  24. And literally none of the other teams would make those trades
