White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 12:18 AM) $13 million a year? Wow. So anybody know where that would put the payroll? That's also Heyman's speculation, though Dunn and Pierzynski did both backload their contracts. $13 mill sounds about right for Konerko, considering his production, reputation, and the Derek Jeter treatment. Hoping for 2 years, though I imagine they'll give him 3, which honestly be quite scary. -
Adrian Gonzalez and his philosophical ways can SUCK IT!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:59 PM) The ball Thome hit off Thornton was hit harder. To be fair to Thornton, he shouldn't have been out there in the first place. I've seen half of that highlight one time, and that's all I needed to see. That was brutal. Greg, if you are basing your entire opinion on ONE appearance, then ignorance will haunt you. And, if you base your opinion entirely upon ONE appearance, I suggest you watch the video from Bobby Jenks on July 18th. That will change your opinion of Jenks instantly. He has a few others like that as well. Putz does not. In fact, aside from those knee injuries (which I do believe has to do with overusage, which - and I have no data behind that but merely a hunch - has to do with Ozzie using his setup men far more often than his closer, whether warming and bringing in or simply warming and then shutting down once the Sox take control or lose the game. IF that is true, then I think Putz is fine as a closer)

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 03:27 AM) Does anybody (aside from TitoMB) think Dunn will break Belle's single season home run record (49)? If so, do you think he'll be able to do it more than once during this contract? No. The most he's ever hit was 46, and the next most he's hit was 40 - he's done that 4 times. I understand that he's moving from a pitchers park to a hitters park, but he played in a great hitters park before going to Arizona and then Washington. I think the most he hits is about 45, which is still a pretty incredible number and, unless I am not thinking of something (Dye hit 42, Thomas 43, and I don't think they had anyone before that), would still be good for 2nd most in White Sox history. The more important matter in all of this is that Adam Dunn is f***ing good. I don't believe that can be stressed enough.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 11:12 PM) Werth would be in RF, Dunn at DH, and Viciedo would be 1B. Quentin won't be on this team if we get a right fielder. I don't buy that and have suggested moving Quentin to 1B in the past. Moving to 1B would help Quentin in a lot of ways (namely limiting his exposure to running) and I think he could be a great 1B because he's very athletic, he's smart, and he's big. Of course... QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:22 AM) If we can afford Werth, then Paulie should be plan B. ...there's this. The Sox wouldn't be able to afford Jayson Werth even if he hadn't switched agents, because he'd have gotten $14 per over 5 years, and the Sox couldn't make that kind of commitment to a player who depends on his legs for a lot of his value. Now he's going to get anywhere from $15-18 mill a year over the same 5 or perhaps 6 years, and that's just silly to think the Sox would be involved on that. The Sox simply can't afford him, nor should they need to. If they can't sign Konerko, they should turn to a cheaper alternative and save the money for the draft, because they'll get 2 extra picks when Konerko leaves.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 11:56 PM) Let's wait until we actually have a constructed bullpen. There could be a new Linebrink in 2011. I hope the White Sox don't sign another reliever to a 4-year, $19 mill deal only to see him turn into a POS halfway through the first year. Linebrink was a special kind of bad. It takes a certain mix of bad scouting, bad signing, and bad, bad performance to get a Scott Linebrink on your roster. Atleast he was a good guy in the clubhouse...I'm sure the Sox will (legitimately) miss that.
-
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) Did you really need to dissect that post? QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 08:19 PM) Honestly...I think a few of us are glad someone other than us did it, just so it's done. People have the right to their own opinions (no matter how ridiculous), and there ARE flaws in Dunn's game, as there are with almost every player. He expressed his, but it got destroyed because he didn't back it up with any factual information. If he backs it up with solid, sound reasoning, it might make sense. --- In my lifetime, this is one of the Sox 2 best free agent signing at the time, before taking into consideration production - when Jermaine Dye and others can be considered - with Belle being the other one, and his contract was pretty crappy for the Sox...I believe it was a 5/$50, but with the out-clause after year 2, which Belle exercised and then went to Baltimore. Dunn doesn't have that type of outclause and should be able to produce very well throughout the duration of his contract. The only other free agent signing I can think of that could ultimately be better than Dunn is Fisk. Hopefully Dunn surpasses him.

The fact that Thornton throws with his left hand and is, in fact, a top left handed reliever in the game (and arguably the best) means that he loses value when he only throws in the 9th. By keeping him in a situational role like this, he can be used anytime between the 6th and the 9th, and he can be used in the 9th if the situation calls for it. Putz doesn't have that platoon advantage - not that he's not better against righties than lefties (I'm sure he is) - simply because right handed pitchers aren't nearly as in demand. Putz closing would be a good thing for this organization.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:32 PM) I liked the Linebrink deal a lot more when it was $1.5 we gave up and not $3.5 million. No I agree completely. That $2 mill is actually pretty huge, especially when it could mean the difference between giving anybody $5 million instead of $7 million. I mean, if it came down to that, I'm sure Reinsdorf and company would pay up, so it's not as big of a concern to me, but it still sucks. I am happy that it seems like he atleast has a live arm. Throw him in the bullpen and maybe he blossoms.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) So, the White Sox don't exactly have a long history of monster free agent acquisitions... where does this one rank? This could be the best... Nothing will top Pablo Ozuna.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 07:09 PM) Buehrle shouldn't have to take a discount. He has a better resume' than he did 4 years ago. By simply being 33 when his next contract starts instead of 29, his resume is worse. If he thinks he can get $14 mill on the open market again, by all means, he should try it. I doubt he'll be able to, but he can go ahead and try. If anything, he is worth $8-10 million, and the Sox should sign him to an extension for no more than that. I also believe they should consider it. Even if he isn't even a #2 caliber starting pitcher by the end of that contract, he's still never made less than 30 starts in his entire career (aside from 2000 when he was a midseason call-up), and there is huge value in a pitcher who can give you 200 innings on a year to year basis. Or their contract could simply run out. The White Sox were able to get Tadahito Iguchi because he was a free agent and wanted to come over to the US.

QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 07:38 PM) I don't mind Dunn being the DH but I can't believe how much the Sox overpaid for him. s***. The Sox didn't overpay for him. He is seriously worth $14 million a year to swing the bat 4-5 times per game - thats how good he is offensively. I would like to see any evidence you have of Vlad being a better hitter. On top of that, I would like to see any evidence you have of Thome being a better hitter. Remember that you have to consider durability when doing so. In my opinion, both Vlad and Thome are good hitters but they are not superior options to Dunn. They aren't even equal, and really it's not close. In fact, signing Vlad to the 2-3 year deal worth $6-7 million would have been overpaying for him by a ridiculous amount. Dunn is one of the best hitters in baseball though. Adam Dunn has the 4th most home runs in a players first 10 seasons - 354. Using some pretty simple arithmetic, that means he's averaged 35.4 homers per season in each of the first 10 years of his career. On top of that, he has the most walks in the majors over the past 7 seasons too, so he is getting on base at the same time. If Pujols were a DH, he'd STILL get $25 million a year. He's a once in a generation hitter who is going to be worth virtually any contract that you sign him to. Pretty easily, and if Konerko doesn't resign, then they can just sign Lee. --- Here's what I want from you - any evidence you have that Dunn sucks. You are pretty adament about this, so you must believe it, and therefore you must have evidence to back it up. I could make a similar post to yours wondering why the White Sox didn't trade for Ryan Theriot because he's a far superior player to Alexei Ramirez, but that wouldn't hold much ground because it's quite clear that it's wrong. So prove it. Why does Adam Dunn suck? What does JIM THOME bring to the table that Adam Dunn doesn't?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) Too bad they can't cancel contracts, that would be awesome. I was just thinking that. So basically, if the reward is high enough at this point, you can take the penalties and be fine with everything. I mean, the Heat still wind LeBron and Bosh, so why would they care otherwise? Ooohh just a little money, or a draft pick or 3, or Riley has to watch the games from home for a while...that isn't of any dire consequence. If you have the ability to void the contract if tampering takes place, then teams will stop tampering pretty quickly (or, at the very least, they will do it a little more cautiously).

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) The Reds dumped Harang, right? Close to signing with San Diego in fact

White Sox offer arbitration to Konerko, Putz.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 01:19 AM) What I read (albeit from MLBTR) is that they want Torrealba to mentor Teagarden and Ramirez. If they think he can be a starting catcher then that's great, maybe he can. But if they're getting a starting catcher then they're getting him a lot cheaper than a legitimate starting catcher's price. They're paying a high price for a backup/part timer though if that's what they're doing. I don't know why they'd see him as a starter though, unless they're just trying to save their money for pitching figuring they've already got enough offense as it is. With regard to this, I counter with this... -
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) If Konerko isn't resigned, then maybe more Kotsay at first base? Dude, give it up. --- This is an incredible trade. Kyle Cofield will forever be blessed.
-
QUOTE (ozzfest @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 11:45 AM) Does anyone realize how much this guy sucks with runners in scoring position?? Isn't that a big indicator of how good a hitter really is? .231/.411/.478/.890 for his career No I was not aware of something that is not true
-
It seems like you could offer Mariano Rivera a 6 year deal at this point and your investment would be fine. He's just ridiculous.

White Sox offer arbitration to Konerko, Putz.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 29, 2010 -> 07:58 PM) So a player who put up an OPS better than AJ did last year in a worse hitters environment who is generally considered to be a pretty good developer and handler of not only other young catchers but of young pitching staffs too gets less over a 2 year contract than AJ would have in a 1 year contract, and you still think NOT offering arbitration was a mistake? If anything, this pretty much confirms what the Sox and everyone else believed in that teams aren't going to spend out the wazoo to get mediocre catchers. If the Sox want AJ back, they can bring him back at the $7-8 mill over 2 years, and if he doesn't accept it, then they can find someone else. AJ is running out of options already considering the main two spots I figured he'd be interested in were Texas and Florida, and they both filled their vacancies almost immediately. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 12:23 AM) The point remains - AJ is going to be 34 next season and there aren't going to be many, if any, teams looking to sign him to be the starting catcher. I am most certainly not going to rule out his return, but it'll be closer to $3.5-5 mill per year than it will be $7, and the White Sox have, at the very least, saved $2-3.5 million by not offering him arbitration. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 01:19 AM) BS. I don't need a sig bet. All I need is I told you so. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) No, it could mean that Thornton was being looked at as the closer and Ozzie wanted 2 lefty setup men. Pretty much. Or he views Sale as the closer. -
damn, that was awesome
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) I hope I'm wrong, but my guess is this means bye-bye Gavin.... At this point, with no huge holes anywhere around the diamond, I don't even know that you look to add MLB pieces. Pieces that are close to the majors, assuredly, but I think you can probably get away with adding a good starting pitching prospect, a good hitting prospect, and then a throw-in or two. Or perhaps you do add a major league ready starter. I don't know. I do know that if they kept this team together as currently constructed, the pitching staff and offense would be just fine. I think the main concern at this point is filling out the bullpen.

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) They just mentioned on the score the Sox are looking at Tim Byrdak. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/byrdati01.shtml In his career against LHP - 202/.296/.380/.677, and it's been good each of the last 4 years. For the right price, that's a solid pickup. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) I would think one of Buehrle/Peavy/Rios/Jackson HAVE to be traded if the Sox truly intend of bringing Konerko back. Also, interesting that Dunn's starting point was 4yr/$60, and he took $56. Wonder if he agreed to it so long as they throw that $4M to Paulie. No, I think it's more that the Sox had a strong desire to get him, probably came at him with like 4/$52 or something (which very well could have been the contract they were going to offer Martinez), and the two sides met in the middle.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) Cowley - Just spoke to a good source and here is how it went down. Lost out on V-Mart before offer could be made. Called about The Prince ... But he makes terrible music.
