  1. I don't like the idea of a 7-man pen and 4-man bench when the strong point of the team is the pitching staff and the weak point is the offense. Seems to me you'd want to try and help the offense out in any way you could, but maybe that's just me.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 12:57 AM) Couldn't agree more. The horse-collar penalty is already one that is being botched on a regular basis. Adams was being picked-on not only by Aaron Rogers and the Packers, but the refs as well. At some point you have to let the kid play the game without throwing a flag by default simply because they didn't complete the pass... Seriously, Adams didn't have a good game, but there's only so much you can do when you are being hit from both sides. It's sweet karma that he forced the game ending fumble. The Cardinals the past two postseasons have been absolutely money. If not for the last drive last year, this team would have won 5 straight postseason games. Gotta play better defense against the Saints though (which I think they actually will do).
  3. QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 10:35 PM) I like Kila alot actually,he has a nice skill set, but the Royals would be foolish to trade a rookie, under team control unless we gave them some uber prospect back. Also, he may struggle initially and the White Sox are in need of a more proven player since they are in win now mode. The Sox would have to give up a prospect for sure, but probably not a real good prospect. In all actuality, Kila's only had one outstanding year in the minors (2008) and one other good year (2005) when looking at raw statistics. During his outstanding year, he was trying AA in the Texas League for the 3rd time (and proceeded to mash), and then moved up to the Pacific Coast League, where the ERA of the league was 4.84. In 2005, he played in the California League. He put up .304/.428/.497/.925; the league's splits were .286/.357/.452/.809 and the Royals team that year - the High Desert Mavericks - put up a .301/.367/.501/.868. Considering all of this, I'm quite leery of even thinking about trading for Kila. The dude can draw a walk, but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up hitting .230/.325/.400 at the major league level with a peak of maybe .260/.360/.465 (which would still only be an .825 OPS. There have been complaints of Konerko putting up .840 as a 1Bman (though part of that is because he's paid as handsomely as he is) and I'm just not sure Kila could even touch that.
  4. That was a terrible officiating crew in the Packers-Cards game. There was atleast one horse collar penalty that should not have been called - you can grab someone by the collar, but you can't tackle them from the collar. If that's not how the rule is interpreted, then it's more ticky-tacky than roughing the passer. And there was also a defensive holding call against Michael Adams late in the game that I didn't think even happened. He had his arm in front of him, and arm behind him, and the receiver - I think it was Driver - had full range of motion to do what he wanted and Adams was just playing him tight. Adams knocked the ball away at the exact right moment, and it looked like a clean play. Maybe I need to see a replay to actually see a hold, but I didn't see anything.
  5. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) So it is retarded to think that Colt's NFL future played a factor on the decision to sit out the rest of the game? OK butch, whatever you say. If by NFL future, you mean his ability to play another game after that one, then yes. All the reports say that he couldn't throw the ball accurately past 7 yards, and that any more throwing that he did could have further injured his shoulder. If he can't throw, he's not going to be able to do much else. He's not Michael Vick, and that Alabama defense was strong and fast. Colt McCoy was useless after that injury.
  6. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 10:24 AM) For some reason I cant find the Twins nearly as hateable as the Tigers. Or Indians. Maybe just because I've had worse experiences with the fans of the latter two. Twins fans gave Buehrle a standing ovation when he set his record. You're not going to get that everywhere. Plus, with AJ stomping on Morneau's foot at first, and Game 163, they have more reason to hate us than the other way around. Granted we have lost a ton to them over the years, but I guess I cant really get tons of hate up for teams that come in year in year out with their just-decent talent level. This thought process goes against everything I've ever thought when considering the Twins. Their fans are, for the most part, knowledgeable, but it doesn't make them any less obnoxious. I can't stand how f***ing pesky they are. There have been times that they don't even have talent on their roster and they do well. I mean, Carlos Silva? Nick Punto? Those are two of the most boring baseball players talent-wise I've ever seen in my life. And hell yes I hate them for beating us. The Sox had far more talent in 2003, and Torii Hunter pretty much single handedly ended Jamie Burke's career in Chicago (and he had been a damn good backup to that point). I respect them as an organization for what they have done, but that doesn't mean I don't hate them.
  7. I don't recall the site nor the metric used, but there's a way of telling how much a player contributes with his baserunning. I believe Omar Vizquel was pretty high on that. I figure he will probably take that over and De Aza may have a few appearances himself if he is called up. Vizquel was obviously brought in for his defense, but Ozzie can pull the old double switch out of his ass to figure that out and have Vizquel end up at either 2B, 3B, or SS come the end of a game (and hopefully that's never 2B).
  8. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) We've all gone from being terrified of being stuck with Thome again to being terrified of life w/o him. I just hope this time around they bat him a little lower and mix in Jones. You use the words "we've all" far too loosely here. I've never been afraid of Thome coming back, and if a big time impact bat couldn't be brought in, I have been all for bringing him back. Barring the signing of a guy like Adam LaRoche or Russell Branyan - and I don't know why the Sox would acquire them when they know what they have in Thome - I still envision Thome being back.
  9. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) From reading what most Sox fans have been saying all winter I would guess that they wanted either Thome or Vlad to be the pinch runner. Yes, that is exactly what I want.
  10. ESPN slurped New England and Green Bay. My predictions, thus, were Baltimore and now Arizona.
  11. QUOTE (1977 sox fan @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 07:34 AM) ok he is a great pitcher so lester must be even greater or what term do i use please don't compare stats Danks to Lester . this whole arguement is about the word its self GREAT PLEASE tell me how this pitching staff is great ? like i said its good but not great not yet and why not use wins and losses to compare a great pitcher in the end isn't that what seperates a great pitcher from good or ok pitcher. i read here before how vasques was this and that but if we don't look at his late season pitching or as most here put it the important or pressure big games then his overall numbers are well great . so that makes him great ? and some body brings up HALLADAY TO . OH please are you saying Danks will be or is in the same group of pitchers as a Roy Halladay ? then somebody takes out Danks rookie season stats why ? well we will see how great this pitching staff is i have a feeling many here will be disappointed that there not great they are good but not good enough to carry a fairly weak defensive and a low offensive production team . i don't believe our lineup as it sits now will produce enough day in a day out to win . now if this was a great pitching staff or rotation we would still win there is a big difference in being good then being great . Here are the 3 year ERAs from the top 4 starters... Jake Peavy - 3.15 Mark Buehrle - 3.75 Gavin Floyd - 4.14 John Danks - 4.06 Find me 5 other staffs with 4 starters over the past 3 seasons who have put up ERAs under 4.15. I don't care that some seasons were shortened due to injury, pitching in the minor leagues, or protecting an arm. It's generally right around 450 innings or more, which is more than large enough sample size. Add to that Freddy Garcia as the #5 starter who was very solid last year and a nice youngster coming up in Dan Hudson, and the White Sox rotation is great. I think you might be the only person on the site who has even brought into question the ability of the rotation, and it's all over the thought of bringing in Adrian Gonzalez. The difference between Adrian Gonzalez and Jim Thome is very sizeable, but it's not big enough to lose one of the top 4 starters while losing several other great prospects too, especially because resigning Adrian Gonzalez would meaning guaranteeing him somewhere around 6-8 years and $17-20 mill a year in 2 years.
  12. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) Tons of K's versus tons of non-K outs..... it seems like very often the latter situation is hated less, even when it comes sans power totals. Hey at least Branyan cant GIDP if he's striking out. And we dont have to bat him that high either... If you sign Branyan, you have to hit him in the cleanup spot
  13. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 05:21 PM) In a sport where there aren't many Latinos,it's good to see two Mexican-Americans in Mark Sanchez and Tony Romo leading their teams into the playoffs Tony Romo is Mexican-American?
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) People keep saying McCoy was less hurt than he was, as he didn't want to return to the game and hurt his draft stock. It's likely the exact opposite, and his injury is more severe than they're letting on but he wants to rehab it as much as he can prior to the combine. I never once thought that, personally. I sorta always assumed that if McCoy could have been back, he would have been, and I don't think he really cared about his NFL stock. Hell, I personally didn't think he was a first day pick. If anything, I think his stock would have soared had he been able to come back and win the game.
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) Oh NOW you guys like Scotty Pods. Nope. Glad he's with the Royals because he gets a starting spot and he plays in the Central. His putrid defense and baserunning alone should lose the Royals 4 games by themselves, and when he regresses to a .270 average, he'll lose them even more games. I don't care for Podsednik as a player, because I've never thought he was that good, but he's given a lot to the Sox organization, and I'll be thankful of that. Don't care for Juan Pierre either. Pierre can run the bases and field his position. He still can't throw though.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 09:30 PM) Great, now we have to play Scotty Pods 18 times a season ... and Getz ... and Brian Anderson ... and Fields. All guys who will want to kick our ass. Good luck to our pitchers keeping Scotty off base. He had a lot of multi hit games last year. Royals are loading up on our players. I fully expect us to trade for DeJesus soon and the Royals to sign Dye or Thome. Royals --> White Sox -s***ty players, what do the White Sox want to do with players who played for the Royals, every player that plays for the Royals is bad White Sox --> Royals -OMG, what are the Sox doing letting players go to the Royals, they are gonna be mad and play good and stuff oh, and the Royal --> White Sox connection already happened with Dye
  17. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 02:07 PM) Exactly, Thome is no stud by any means. As long as he NEVER plays against a lefty, I'll take his 2 strikeouts, 1 weak selfish groundout to the shift, no speed, and 1 walk per game against good pitching, and his 3 for 4 with a HR once a week during a blowout. Jim Thome, 2009 High Leverage:.260/.389/.571/.961, 95 PAs Medium Leverage: .238/.337/.483/.821, 175 PAs Low Leverage: .254/.384/.425/.810, 164 PAs Jim Thome, 2008 High: .259/.346/.565/.911, 127 PAs Medium: .263/.376/.495/.871, 226 PAs Low: .220/.357/.478/.835, 249 PAs Jim Thome, 2007 High: .338/.450/.588/1.038, 100 PAs Medium: .281/.434/.556/.989, 196 PAs Low: .246/.375/.558/.933, 240 PAs Jim Thome, 2006 High: .235/.385/.471/.856, 109 PAs Medium: .314/.430/.686/1.117, 230 PAs Low: .286/.417/.573/.990, 271 PAs I would say Jim Thome has been a clutch player and you are throwing out a bulls*** hypothetical scenario that I'm sure has happened but, according to the numbers, really hasn't happened that often in the past 4 seasons.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) If I was a Bears WR, I'd get the entire recieving corp together and have everyone chip in enough to cover the $750,000. 750k is like $1,000 for normal people. Maybe for the Patriots receiving core. If you (or someone else) can show the math that shows that Hester, Bennett, Knox, Iglesias, Olsen, Clark, Davis, Aromashodu, and any others that played can donate enough to make up for that amount, I would appreciate it. Until then, I would assume it's coming straight out of Jay Cutler's signing bonus.
  19. Alabama was running an ultra conservative offense in the 3rd quarter because Texas couldn't move the ball. Alabama was running an ultra conservative defense in the 3rd quarter because Texas couldn't move the ball. As soon as Texas scored a touchdown -you saw Alabama become more aggressive with their playcalls offensively, and they started to move the ball offensively, though it ended in a punt (obviously after the Texas onside kick) -you saw Alabama's defense becoming much more aggressive while blitzing more. Gilbert picked up said blitzes on his first drive, and moved down the field, and then got a touchdown on one of the few misplays the Bama backers made all night (one big one being the 3rd and 12 or something deep in Texas territory where Shipley was wide, wide open and Gilbert overthrew him); he didn't fare so well after the 2nd touchdown. McCoy participating would have made this game closeR, but Bama played this game close to the vest the entire second half. They were up 3 scores, Texas couldn't move the ball, and they can run the ball; they didn't run it well in the second half, but ran it well enough to eat quite a bit of clock. Gilbert's not that good, but I don't think having McCoy in this game would have made much of a difference. It's not like McCoy plays linebacker and safety, and the Texas defense wasn't stopping the Bama rushing attack when they were actually running a bit of play action here and there. Bama ran the Wildcat like 2-3 times, and Texas couldn't stop that; Texas really couldn't stop runs to the outside; Texas couldn't hold runs up the middle (from Ingram) to less than 2-4 yards. Texas had absolutely no shot in this game. Bama rolled, and would have rolled if McCoy was in.
  20. I honestly understand votes for Ellis Burks. He was a damn good player. Not Hall of Fame worthy, but a damn good player. Eric Karros is a joke. He was good for like 5 years, and he wasn't that good during 2 of those years. Segui is a joke. The dude was involved with steroids and was too injury prone to put up any type of good career numbers.
  21. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 11:17 AM) Chapman's going to start the year in AA probably. How's the plan look now? I think he'll be lucky to start in AA. He could very well start off in A-ball. He's just that raw. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 12:16 PM) I would give Chapman a solid chance at being the second lefty in our pen. But yeah, not a fan of the proposal in question. Only because he can throw 98 MPH from the left side and because Randy Williams sucks.
  22. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 09:35 PM) Chunk I meant that he's looked at as a weak link next year. Probably because of the playoffs, Yankees fans are more excited about Gardner. Who cares about the Yanks, on to our DH. I'd rather let spring training play out before signing anybody. Let's see if we have 10 Major League producers for 9 positions before we do anything. Our division isn't running away if we wait til May, June or even the deadline to sign an out of work DH. What if Flowers rakes in ST? What if Andruw Jones is a beast? And these guys can play important positions. All we need is someone to be Hot Carl this year. What if I s*** bricks of gold and it smells like roses? Besides that, if those two hit and they are DHing most of the time, it won't matter that they can play important positions.
  23. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 10:22 PM) I think Alomar gets in next year. Pretty sure Bly and Larkin have a shot as well. Still makes me mad that they didn't get in, though I don't mind Dawson as much especially considering he actually had much better numbers than Jim Rice had when he got in (though I never thought Rice would get in) Only 3 people in the history of the game has 400 homers and 300 Sb. 2/3 are now in the hall (Mays, Dawson) and who knows if Bonds will get in. (though he's got my vote) Kinda bummed out that Robin Ventura will never be on the ballot again even if he wasn't a "hall of fame" type player. I think Bonds will get in, but I doubt he gets in within the first 5 years, and it might be 10 years.
