  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Why would he want to come here as opposed to the Angels, who have won their division and made the playoffs for the last 5 years? Especially after seeing the success his former teammate Bobby Abreu had with the Angels? Is this inside info, Jason? The A's won the division in 2006. Just a small point, but worth noting.
  2. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) blasphemy yeah what's with that s***
  3. OOTP provides for incredible (artificial) moements. Sox up 3-0 against the Mets in game 4 of the Series...Sox get one in fhte bottom of the 8th to make it 6-4. Sox get a runner on base, hit and run happens to avoid the GIDP, and said player gets a hit. Runners on first and third, Series winning run at the plate. Count goes to 3-2 and BOOM goes the dynamite. A f***ing monster shot - like 425 to left field - to win the series. f***, I was ready to celebrate in my room. Then i remembered it was a computer game and that people have finals in 50 minutes, so I didn't celebrate hard. It was stil awesome
  4. This thread was so bad that it had to be good, and it lived up to the hype. Well done.
  5. Thank God for Atmosphere; I would have jumped off of a cliff by now. The Sox are getting semi-fair value for a player who should be a #9 hitter. It's just too f***ing bad that Pierre is not that good. I'll hope and pray for the best player available, with one player in mind, but s***. Pierre f***ing blows. Atleast we still have Hudson.
  6. It's weird to think, but Dunn would be a monumental pick up, especially because there is no way that Washington would be able to ask for Hudson while still getting good prospects. And, for s***s a giggles, the Sox might be able to get out of Linebrink's contract.
  7. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) How about not wasting $8M on Pierre and instead finding someone off the scrapheap that can put up a ~.330 OBP for the minimum and play a little CF, they're out there. I'll gladly take a DH that can put up a decent OPS if it means no Kotsay or Andruw Jones, this is the AL you don't use your bench all that often and neither player has much flexibility anyway. I don't really give a s*** about either. And if Vizquel is going to be getting 250+ PA including time at DH I'm disappointed they signed him as well. Oh, you mean like Alejandro De Aza
  8. QUOTE (striker @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 03:59 PM) Hanley Ramirez for Alexei, Hudson and Morel. Yeah, no
  9. QUOTE (striker @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 08:26 AM) I think Winn could come close to matching Upton's offensive upside .300/.350. And he wouldn't cost our two best prospects. He'd be a stop gap until Danks or Mitchell are ready. BJ Upton's offensive upside is not .300/.350. It's not even close to that. In 2008 he put up .273/.383/.401/.784. In 07 he put up .300/.386/.508/.894. BJ Upton's upside is to the friggin moon. If he hits what he's capable of hitting, he's a .850-.900 OPS bat that would be good enough to hit cleanup in some teams' lineups, and he'd be hitting leadoff here. His split stats last year are similar to Randy Winn, but he's also more than 10 years younger than Randy Winn too. Randy Winn is falling off and is going to be a 4th outfielder or retired within the next 2-3 years whereas Upton still has the capability of being one of the top 10 players in all of baseball.
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 12:07 AM) Atkins could go to Boston. The point behind dealing Lowell is to sign Beltre. If they can't deal Lowell, he's going to have to do.
  11. QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:56 PM) weve actually had a good track record with pitchers though... hitters on the other hand. You're right, the Sox and Walker had nothing to do with Quentin's 2008 season, the reincarnation of Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome hitting the s*** out of the ball in 06, Joe Crede's 2006 season, Scott Podsednik's 2005 and 2009, Rowand's 2004, Konerko's resurgence in 2004 and 2008, and I'm sure there are a few more too. And I don't dare mention the golden boy Beckham, who had an OPS of .398 after his first 42 plate appearances (he put up .853 from that point forward).
  12. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 06:59 AM) More responsible would be for us to have less than two offspring per family because the human population is already to large to be considered sustainable. I already blew that with my second kid, of course. To be fair, much of the unsustainable population growth is due to developing nations, especially India, where (as far as I'm aware), there are no restrictions to the number of children you can have, have a population up above 1 billion, and are no where near as industrialized as the US or even China. Developed nations, such as western Europe and the US, have actually seen their birth rate decrease over the 50 or so years.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 11:09 PM) Cameron got that much money...? great defensive CFer, good on base, good power...just doesn't hit for average
  14. He was about to receive a hell of a lot of venom And then I saw #88
  15. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 11:15 AM) It's very likely that the reason he's been ineffective is health related. If he's healthy, which the White Sox and their medical staff are saying is the case, then moving Jenks to free up cash to spend elsewhere actually makes a lot of sense. No it doesn't. You are making the bullpen weaker and potentially weaker than it was before, and Putz would end up making around $6.5 mill if he were healthy all season as a closer as opposed to right around $3-4 mill by being a setup man all year long. Sure, you save $1.5 mill plus the $8 that Jenks was owed, but unless Jenks is traded for peanuts (which would be the case right now with Valverde, Rodney, Gonzalez, and Gregg on the market as guys who were closers at some point last year) and Mike Gonzalez was signed for a similar price to come in so that one of he or Thornton could close to try and help replace some of the lost help, and the relief pitching from the right side still hurts...it just doesn't make sense. Trading Jenks right now is something that would occur in a video game. It just doesn't make enough sense for the Sox to even consider dealing Jenks right now. If Putz shows he's healthy and performing, Jenks shows he's healthy enough to be dealt, and someone stands out from the crowd and puts themselves in the middle relief or setup discussion (and that's excluding Pena, who is already going to be counted on heavily to perform out of the bullpen), then it's a possibility. It's really not possible before the season starting.
  16. He wants to play the field. That doesn't mean he has to play the field every damn game, because if he signs to do that, the Sox may as well take the short-term investment and sign Thome.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 07:20 AM) The finished games have everything to do with being the closer. He also has $250k based on appearances. Perhaps, but it's no indication that the White Sox are going to look to move Jenks because they signed with Putz. If it is about being the closer, it would be him being a candidate to take over for saves during the middle of the season due to injury/ineffectiveness of Jenks.
  18. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:14 AM) Are you serious??????????????? Two of you guys??? C'mon Now! Cust is comparable to Dye in RF and would be a better LF than Pods. Do I want him playing ANY position other than DH? No chance. BUT Saying that Thome is a more versatile DH than Cust is downright proposterous. No one has said "Thome is a more versatile DH than Cust." What has been said is that Thome's lack of versatility actually works out better in this case because he's never going to be expected to play the field, whereas Cust likely will be. If you would rather have your DH play DH than play the field, why wouldn't you get the player with more offensive upside who is not going to hurt your team by playing defense? It's not necessarily a bad thing that either Cust or Matsui can play the field, but if they were signed by the Sox and asked to play the field, I would hope it would be in an emergency situation only and never as a regular player out there.
  19. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 12:28 AM) He was never my all-time favorite player or anything, but he'll probably be remembered in an unfair light for this last half season. And as far as his whole career here...will probably be given a little less than his due b/c he wasnt a homegrown talent, and overall was pretty much a vanilla personality. But several years here he had some big numbers, and obviously meaningful ones with regard to the history of the franchise. I disagree, I think for much of JD's tenure here, he fit the Chicago persona perfectly and is going to be remembered for a very long time and his name is going to be used when talking about 2005 a lot, same goes with Crede.
  20. QUOTE (Fotop @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 02:24 AM) Garrett Atkins would be a nice addition if he could come cheaply (however I imagine there's multiple teams looking at him) Solves the issue at 3B if we're moving Beckham back to the middle infield. I know Atkins was HORRIBLE last year but he's still a guy that plays a decent third and is roughly a career .800 OPS. Think he's out of our price range but I'd be pretty happy if he landed here. Sign me up also for an Adam Miller reclamation project. Pretty low risk in that one with a possible good bullpen reward. Garrett Atkins is at a career -5.0 UZR in his career at 3B in 5400 innings. I think it's pretty safe to say he's not that good over there. Also, both Adam Miller and Anthony Reyes were resigned by the Indians to minor league deals.
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 01:52 AM) Josh Hamilton would be fantastic. Do you really think we could get him? Have there been any rumors that he's on the block? I haven't heard anything. No, and the Rangers have really made no effort whatsoever to resign Byrd. Their outfield is going to end up with Cruz, Borbon, and Hamilton in it.
  22. I also have a request. How about a new offseason banner?
  23. QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 01:09 AM) Where did you hear that. It's been popping up all over the place. For as specific as it is, it could mean that they were quite a ways apart and this is the best move for the organization.
  24. Odds are really good that Trayce Thompson never amounts to anything other than potential trade bait, but if he gets the correct coaching and the Sox go really slow with him, he's definitely got the type of talent to become a special player. When I think of athletic players, I tend to consider the likes of Granderson and Sizemore. If, come say 2014, Thompson can be considered anything close to either of those two when they first came up, it'd be incredible.
  25. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 12:57 AM) I'd love it if the Sox would get Jose Arredondo. I think he would be nasty in our bullpen and I'm shocked he was non-tendered. There seems to have been a falling out between Arredondo and the Angels. He's an interesting candidate, but he's going to miss all of next year due to the Tommy John surgery he had just 4 days ago.
