  1. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Notice Linebrink was not mentioned by KW. I think he is being moved for another bad contract (Bradley, Pierre) and KW is getting the ducks in a row for this based on the non-tender guys. If Jenks is non-tendered this team has serious issues. Jenks is not going to be non-tendered
  2. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 10:06 AM) So, what part of my reference to the Sox signing Teahen to a 3 year contract was incorrect? They already had him under team control for 2 years. His contract is essentially a 1-year extension.
  3. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 01:18 AM) Obviously signing Teahen for 3 years is gonna block Brent Morel and any other 3B. Viciedo should move to 1B now. He would replace Brandon Allen as the system's slugging 1B of the future. BTW, why does 670 podcast 4 hours of Brian-The-Whipping Boy and not a full White Sox Weekly show...?! Will you please read the Teahen resigning thread and get, if just some, insight into MLB financials before thinking the Sox signed Teahen 3 years beyond his free agency years? Kthx
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 11:36 PM) Putz wants in Chicago because there's a chance that he could get the Closer job later in the season if Bobby falters. Thornton is great, but you don't take away your best lefty reliever from Middle Relief/Set Up and make him the Closer if there is a good righty alternative. Which is why Jenks' value has been far too high all along - Jenks won't be traded for beyond his value to the person itself. If you don't need money or anything further, and a 1992 Honda Civic is worth $2000 to you, you will not sell that car for $1000, because it's worth $2000 to you. The White Sox need the further, but have the money to spend to fill said needs, and have other resources to acquire said need, if push come to shove. If someone had serious interest in Jenks at this point, they would have spoken up by now. I would say the certainty of Bobby Jenks being on the south side next year is right around the certainty that Gordon Beckham will be, and that would be 100%.
  5. The idea is actually growing on me. Gardner has displayed some ability to draw a walk, has some speed, and can actually use that speed on the bases. I haven't seen picked off numbers at all, but he seems like a very good buy low candidate. I want nothing to do with him as the opening day CFer, but I don't think it's impossible for him to put up .280/.360/.380 over a full season. My main problem, as was with the Erstad signing, is that Gardner would be thrust into the CF and leadoff (or #2) position immediately, rather than actually playing him to the role that he needs to be played (which would be the backup outfielder role).
  6. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) I really believe that the Yanks let Matsui go. They've added Granderson and as long as they re-sign Damon as expected they'll not have a need for another left handed bat and they don't like his defense. He should be available and I think the Angels would be in on him. A lot of times, the Angels like to bargain hunt. They got Abreu for like $5-7 mill last year because literally no one else wanted him. There was a report that came out that the Sox were willing to offer him $8 mill on a one year deal, but they couldn't offer it to him because there was no where for him to play (putting two and two together, the plan was to deal Dye to Cinci for Bailey and then sign Abreu, but Cinci backed out because, well, it didn't make sense for them to trade a prospect with upside for a player on the downside of his career with 1 expensive year left). If it comes down to the Sox and Angels, he'll be in Chicago without a doubt in my mind.
  7. QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) Neither linebrink or pena will be long men. Nothing suggests such. It's all carrasco's job, and if for whatever reason he can't go, next in line would be hudson, no matter what role in the pen becomes his primary. I fully agree putz has to earn the role, why throw him to the lions, aka put him in a role he is possibly no longer capable of? Ideally linebrink is in middle relief until he proves he is worthy of greater. Pena and thornton respectively ''setup'' from the right and left side. Though i would not put it past ozzie to start the season of with linebrink setting up games for us in favor of pena, and putz for that matter (if signed of course). I hate the two lefty garbage, get me someone that can get lefties out, regardless of their throwing arm. I actually feel OK with Randy Williams as a second lefty right now. However, if Ozzie is to use him properly, it has to be in matchups just to get lefties out. He generally doesn't allow extra base hits at all to lefties - something like 20 in 94 innings - and has some good peripherals to match it - 8.5 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 0.6 HR/9, 1.24 WHIP, and a good groundball percentage too - but he should never face righties ever.
  8. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) I thought I saw that they got Chavez for Iwamura. yes it was. It happened after like Game 2 of the World Series.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 06:01 PM) Here's what i'd do: LR: Linebrink LR: Pena Mr: Hudson Mr: Carrasco SU: Thornton SU: Putz CL: Jenks I imagine, however, Hudson will be LR and Pena will be MR: I would imagine Pena would start off in setup until he either lost the job or Putz earned it. I also don't see Carrasco being used as much more than a rubber arm, similar to what he's done the past two seasons. I also think Ozzie is going to want two lefties, because he always does.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) Matt Thornton was a 29 year old with a career 1.68 WHIP in the big leagues at the end of 2005. His minor league walks were equally bad. Doesn't garantee that he's fixable of course. Just sayin'. Thornton also was mainly used as a starter in the minors and didn't become a reliever until his first season in the majors. I haven't looked at any of Casilla's PitchFx's, but I would also be surprised if his stuff is as good as Thornton's. I know how good it was when he came up, but I don't know how good Casilla's stuff is now, and he's only had a K/9 of over 8 once in his career (9.2 in 2007), whereas Thornton has never been below 8.2 in his major league career and has been phenomenal the previous two seasons.
  11. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) The funny thing about that is putting Pods and his rancid defensive ability in center would IMPROVE their outfield defense from last year. Yeah, but the Sox have Alex Rios to play CF so Pods has no place in the outfield.
  12. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 10:26 AM) Cubs are not gonna lose this guy to us as the new owner will not let this happen image wise Losing out on a middle reliever who missed most of last season due to arm problems and was bad when he did pitch really isn't going to hurt the Cubs' image too much. I doubt Ricketts cares that deeply.
  13. He's really only worth a minor league deal. He's going to be 30 next year, has never had a good season (and I'm not going to say his 105 ERA+ was good last season considering his WHIP was about 1.60), and has never really shown good peripherals. He's like Mike MacDougal, but worse.
  14. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 02:35 AM) How good is Jesse Chavez? This looks like a steal for Tampa Bay. He had similar, though slightly worse, numbers than Pena last season. For Atlanta, they wanted two 1st round picks for Soriano, but ending up with an MLB ready reliever probably works for them too.
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 10:15 PM) And Brett Wallace and Buster Posey. If anything, the one disappointment seems to be Tim Beckham, but he's only like what, 19? I still say we got the better Shortstop Beckham from Georgia though . Eh, Skipworth and Hosmer seem to be bigger disappointments than Beckham
  16. QUOTE (SockMe @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Harden was traded to the Cubs and they had to give a good deal to get him, never really did anything for them. Harden and Gaudin went to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, Matt Murton and Josh Donaldson. Murton and Gallagher have been a complete flops and Patterson was decent in a cup of coffee last year with the A's and has put up solid minor league numbers in an offense inflated Pacific Coast League. Donaldson looks like he is a major league bat though. That's it. Meanwhile, Harden put up a 3.31 ERA, a K/9 of 11, K/BB of 2.7 and WHIP of 1.22 in 38 starts spanning 212 innings, and really only saw his ERA as high as it was this past year (and 4.09 is not really high) because he allowed a career high 23 homers, which equated to a 1.47 HR/9, which is right around twice his career totals. Given, Wrigley is a better home run hitting park than the Coliseum, but not to that type of rate. Harden was a great starter for the Cubs, and his only real downfall was that he couldn't go deeper into games, which in turn wore out Cubs bullpens.
  17. QUOTE (SockMe @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 08:52 PM) Rays have serious interest but Kenny's initial asking price was to high the last time I saw anything about a Jenks deal. They are after Soriano now. He will cost about the same financially, will take less to acquire (because Atlanta wants to deal him), and was better last season. I don't think they are going to be acquiring Jenks any time soon.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) Eventually he has to acquire some redeeming quality. Even as big of jerks as Cox and Kelso are, they have things about them to like. The redeeming quality might be getting rid of him. I hope he makes like Ed and is kicked out, because he's awful. Lucy is still annoying, but I'm starting to adapt to her.
  19. What are the odds of a talented but raw arm like Santos going through waivers untouched?
  20. and considering it's between 3 teams and involves 8 players, 7 of which have played at the MLB level, it's going to be considered a blockbuster trade.
  21. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 08:59 AM) I don't know. Most baseball fans there right now are fairly casual. 798,382 333,336 478,403 334,563 480,129 390,131 Guess the cities by population. I'll call out one of them. Minneapolis - 390,131 PLUS St. Paul - 287,151 = 677,282 I would say that is big enough, and that is just the city sizes
  22. I understand you need an antagonist in shows to make them interesting, but do they have to be as annoying as Cole? He just doesn't do anything except suck. The security guards could be funny though, in a janitor sort of way (though they will never be the janitor)
  23. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 06:11 PM) If the price is right then I'd love this move. Another lefty is needed though if this does mean the end of Jenks since we can't count on Putz to close right out of the gate, even if he is perfectly healthy. This moves reminds me of bringing in Flash Gordon.
