QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 05:40 PM) i meant that it makes sense to get gonzalez bcuz if we dont, when pk leaves after the yr, we wont have anyone in the minors ready to replace him Viciedo

For starters, I would suggest that you please check the 3 or 4 other threads that are centered around Adrian Gonzalez. Secondly, that package doesn't even come close to touching what the Padres would want, and Alexei is as old or older than Adrian Gonzalez is right now. I honestly don't think the Sox are going to be serious players for Adrian Gonzalez, but I've been wrong before.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 04:20 PM) True, but besides Belichick, who's been better for as long? I can only think of Andy Reid off the top of my head. Who would still be around that long? Jeff Fisher has never really done anything to deserve a 16-year stint as an NFL head coach other than having a killer mustache. Besides that, Tom Coughlin has been around 14 years and has virtually the same resume. And Tony Dungy was/is an incredible head coach. Jon Gruden is also pretty damn good too. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 03:59 PM) Fisher would be my one exception because of his track record. Jeff Fisher has six 10-win seasons in 16 years of coaching. He's had one good playoff run. He's won a division 4 times. His average season is 9-7. He doesn't really have a very good track record considering he's coached in the league for 16 years. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) I blamed Ron Turner but in all actuality the offense while not rolling is kind of like the White Sox bullpen in that the defense does them no favors. I thought the line did fine yesterday and the play calling was better. The problem was that you know Ron Turner was watching the defense and knowing that he had to score almost every possession. The reason Lovie needs to go is that the defensive scheme does not work with this personnel and this is his personnel. There is a ton of money invested in the defensive side of the ball and they need to earn their money. While Shannahan should get he job, I get he feeling that the job will go to Leslie Frazier. Isn't he the Bengals DC? Vikings DC. -
The White Sox have 4 big cogs in the rotation followed up by Freddy Garcia manning the 5 spot and Hudson doing whatever the organization wants him to do. The White Sox have right around $20 mill to spend. Roy Halladay makes around $16 mill. No, that doesn't make sense.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) I posted this over at TalkBears.com, but I thought I would post it here as well to get your thoughts: Let's say the Bears wanted to bring in a coach like Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, and Mike Shanahan and he wants $6-7 million a year (I'm not sure of the going rate for a top coach these days). He signs a 5 year deal worth $35 million. Years 1 and 2 earn him $1.5 million per year while the Bears continue to pay out the Lovie deal, while years 3-5 earn him $10.67 million per. Yes, crazy numbers on the back end, but still averages out to $7 million a year over 5 years. And if those guys flop - it's very, very possible - then what are you going to be doing in year 4 or 5? Shanahan got fired from Denver because he could no longer build a defense and Holmgren left the Seahawks in pretty terrible shape (and sort of did the same thing in Green Bay). The only one who wasn't fired was Cowher. Going all out on big time head coaches is not always the smartest thing to do. Getting a guy who can get the right guys in place and get the right talent on the field is much more important. Lerner in Cleveland trying to lure Holmgren into the front office to take over as VP of Football Operations, much as the Dolphins did with Parcells, might just be the smartest thing a team can do. Get the right philosophy from the VP and the GM down to the kicker and waterboy, and then success can happen, and sometimes over night. -
The White Sox won't add $11.5 million on a 5th starting pitcher. Williams already tried to do something similar to that in 2006 and it backfired tremendously.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 01:27 PM) I've seen people here ASSUME that to be true, but, I've never seen Ozzie quoted as saying that. Has he actually said that? Also, if we have CJ on the team (which may happen), or some other utility guy that could catch in the very long shot chance it became an issue, then Ozzie should feel better about it. I recall having heard it before, saying that he doesn't want to be put in a scenario where he has to pull his DH and leaving the pitcher in to bat, but don't recall where or when.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 03:10 AM) 3.575 + arb. = guessing $4.5 -$1mill from the Royals =$3.5 mill. Has there been any actual clarification on how much the Royals gave? -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 12:10 PM) Peavy and Rios are here to stay. Trading Buehrle and relying on Hudson is stupid, as is trading AJ and relying on Flowers. The Sox aren't trading Buehrle anyway and I'd be pretty shocked if they traded AJ and let a rookie command one of the best starting staffs they've ever had. Nobody is taking Linebrink unless we take on an equal or greater bad contract, so that's not going to help us. Even if the NTC isn't a factor, Paulie's contract will be hard to move without eating money, and the alternatives probably aren't all that great. For example, if we eat about $4M on Paulie and sign Nick Johnson for $5.5, we only cut $2.5M off the payroll and find ourself counting big time on an injury-prone player. Plus Paulie is a FA after 2010 and it probably makes a lot more sense to keep Paulie and let his deal expire than it does to eat money, trade him, and then sign an old free agent to a multi-year contract. Then we'll just be stuck with another Paulie situation in 2011. Given our payroll situation somebody has to go, and Bobby is the only big contract left. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to sell low on him, or to weaken the bullpen, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to spend a large chunk of our offseason change on Mark Teahen either, and yet we already did that. The Sox are probably going to end up paying Teahen right around $2-2.5 mill. That isn't a huge chunk of change.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 02:26 AM) Maybe he doesn't have to do anything or maybe he already did. He might be traded but we wouldn't get much for him. His salary is too high and relievers will be all over the free agent market. Supply and demand. Even some of our minor leaguer's and certainly Hudson will be considered. It will be interesting to see if he's not traded before December 12th. Most of them are not nearly as good as Jenks has been in his career. If you compare this year to previous years, his peripherals were much better across the board, except for his HR/9; it was up around 1.5 this year whereas he's been around 0.6-0.7 for his entire career, and he was at 0.3 in 07 and 0.4 in 08. His H/9 was a little high, but I imagine that has much more to do with the Sox poor defense than Jenks himself. If Jenks allows 4 fewer solo home runs, his ERA is down to 3.03. Jenks will tendered a contract, and if he is traded it's on the basis of his career, his improvement in his peripheral categories this season, and his homer total being an outlier. All of the above gives Jenks a bit of trade value, though I don't believe now is the time to deal him. The Sox control him through 2011 unless I'm for some reason mistaken, and next season is the only time I think he could really be considered to be a non-tender candidate, and that is only if he gets injured or has a terrible season.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) We have said over and over and over again there will not be another old, slow, lift and pull, base clogging sighing on the south side for a very long time. Goodbye Dye and Goodbye Thome. who said that?
-
There is a 0% chance that Bobby Jenks is non-tendered, barring some cataclysmic move on his part that makes his value absolutely nothing. If anything, he will be traded. Good relievers will command a lot of money, and even if Jenks is inconsistent and there are concerns with his weight, he's still good and will have value. JJ Putz was a huge part of the 3-way trade between the Mariners, Indians, and Mets last year, and he was coming off a very mediocre season with the Mariners.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) As much sense trading Alexei makes, it doesn't. Given his salary over the next two years, he is a tremendously valuable asset to this organization, even with the errors. To go along with that, his value isn't as great to a team like the Red Sox, who are in a whole other hemisphere in terms of payroll restrictions. Absolutely. I would say in most spots you should atleast call and find out what they might think of offering - and maybe you still do - but when they also have Jed Lowrie hanging around, I don't think you can count on getting a hell of a lot from Boston for Alexei. If they absolutely had no other option for SS in house and were that close to a World Series, I'd say you may have something, but in this instance, I don't think it's the right place. You might get one good prospect and a decent prospect or two, and that's just not worth moving Alexei.

The basic premise is that if you drink enough beer to get a "beer gut," and you flex your stomach, it is still actually hard, almost as if you have a 6-pack but instead have consumed too many 6-packs. So as a result, we would clench our stomachs and use each other as a punching bag, because we were drunk and it was fun. And I am in a fraternity, so that's why it was relevant.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) Rams fans disagree as well 959 rushing yards, 6 touchdowns, 6.7 YPC, and 162 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown too. There are running backs I would take before Chris Johnson, such as Adrian Peterson, DeAngelo Williams, and maybe Steven Jackson (though he missed 8 games between 2007 and 2008), along with a few others. But going into the game today, Chris Johnson was leading the NFL in rushing with 824 yards, and he just put up 135 more while getting in the endzone a couple more times. This season, Chris Johnson is better than your running back. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) The issue with the eye-test is exactly what you mentioned. Plus, people tend to go ape-s*** over spectacular plays. A good example is Torii Hunter. Once you make a couple great plays, you are forever a hero to Baseball Tonight Web Gems and people will forever engrave you into the awesome fielders hall of fame. It's also tough as hell to do the eye-test from watching on TV. You might not see the defender until he is actually in position to make the play, which doesn't tell you anything about how good he is defensively.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
witesoxfan replied to pmcochr's topic in Pale Hose Talk
At the end of the day, the Sox traded a bust of a prospect, a solid but limited 2Bman for ~$2 mill 3Bman who is a slight upgrade, moves Beckham over to a slightly more natural position at 2B, and opens up a 40-man roster spot. I don't understand why anybody is really making a big deal out of this either way. And even more so, if the Sox find any type of outfielder capable of starting - because Quentin can move to RF and it'll be an upgrade defensively, and if Rios moves to RF because the Sox got an even better defensive CFer, even better - or find a 3Bman, and they'll be fine. I know Williams said that Teahen is set to play 3B, but that probably just means he has his sights set on a certain player, and if he doesn't acquire said player, they'll look at other options. You know we are bored when a small trade like this gets almost 1000 posts. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Nov 7, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) I love getting hammered. I look forward to it when I know it's in my near future. Doesn't make me an alcoholic. There's a difference between looking forward to getting hammered to where it impairs your ability to function on a day-to-day basis and looking forward to getting hammered because you know it'll be a good time. I get my s*** done, I work my ass off during the week, and I unwind hard over the weekend. You seem to take the biggest idiot of the idiots and base your opinions of the whole on that small group of jackasses. And this is just a personal opinion, but if you're drinking to be more social, well, that kind of makes you hypocritical. I do agree, however, that frats and frat parties can suck it. Me and another dude were punching each other in the stomach repeatedly last night.

Sosa is frightening now. I'm probably going to have nightmares thinking of that face. That has to be the scariest thing I have seen in quite a few years.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Chavez is also 26, and actually had a solid season last year with a live arm (I know.. sounds similar). The Rays scouting could have also liked him alot, not to mention I've always thought Iwamura was overrated. There's a difference from a player and a top org prospect. Now if you woulda mentioned the Sanchez/Alderson trade.. then yea.. I see your point. Again.. I'm done with the issue. I know you're done, but I want to have a look at this one time, and then we can kill it. Chavez - 73 games, 67.1 IP, 4.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 1.5 HR/9, 2.9 BB/9, 6.3 K/9, 2.14 K/BB Pena - 72 games, 70 IP, 3.99 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 0.9 HR/9, 2.6 BB/9, 7.1 K/9, 2.75 K/BB Chavez is entering his age 26 season, Pena his age 28 season. It doesn't look like much of a difference to me; if anything, it appears that Pena is a prime candidate to have a great season next year if his BABIP is in a much more normal range, like right around .290-.300. He's been right around .325-.330 the past two seasons, which is abnormally high. With a likely improved defense behind him, Pena could be in for a very good season this upcoming year, especially with half a season of experience under his belt. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 03:42 PM) I don't care if he sucked his career, it was more on "value" which I never liked. But yea I don't want this into a B. Allen thread. It's bad enough that people brought up Nix even when Getz is now gone. The Rays just traded a better than average 2B with good OB and defensive skills for a mediocre middle reliever. The White Sox traded an unproven prospect who struck out 40 times in 116 plate appearances for a mediocre middle reliever. You tell me who got better value.
