Catching line drives is the toughest thing to do when it comes to fielding a baseball, especially when it catches you in-between like that. He never gauged the speed of the ball at all; he couldn't find it initially, and when he did, he came barrelling in like a freight train, and saw the ball was hit harder than it actually was, which is why it hit him in the stomach. If he picked that ball up off the bat right away he would have caught the ball around the letters.

Blue Jays ownership loosened the strings a little bit and let him spend, and he didn't do anything to help the team win. That, and a combination of the Ryan, Rios, and Wells contracts, as well as not dealing Halladay when he had some great offers on the table as well as not getting a damn thing for Rios really killed his chances of coming back and GMing next season.

Discussion: Project Prospect's Top 25 pitchers
witesoxfan replied to DaTank's topic in FutureSox Board
That'd have to be a hell of a player. The Sox weren't willing to move Hudson at all during the regular season. -
Not sure how much the ball is actually worth, but it wouldn't surprise me if the family would sell the ball for $2,500-5,000 and that is f***ing pennies to a major league baseball organization.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 07:33 PM) The thing that bothers me the most is the lowered expectations of the fan base, personally I hold the front office to a higher standard. No one should be content with this guy as their leadoff hitter - especially at age 34 - but years of lowered expectations have people accepting less than they should. I still think Beckham makes a meanass leadoff hitter.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 07:12 AM) I like Matt Kemp baseball is that like Big Hurt Baseball?

Knowing Williams and Guillen's disregard for outfield defense over their entire tenure (outside of Rowand and Anderson for a shortwhile), signing Abreu and a big left handed bat to DH (for instance, Jim Thome), would not surprise me in the least, and would help the offense. Preferably Beckham would leadoff, and the lineup you'd be left with would be potent as hell Beckham - 3B Abreu - RF Quentin - LF Thome - DH Konerko - 1B Pierzynski - C Ramirez - SS Rios - CF Getz/Nix - 2B

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) oh i like them too - but not one of them is the pitcher that Verlander is. Peavy is better than Verlander without question.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 12:57 PM) Maybe because Ozzie would start Pods in CF over him way too often? If Podsednik resigns. I don't think it's completely unreasonable for Podsednik to get like a 3-year, $15 mill contract based off of this season, and I sure as hell hope the White Sox aren't the team giving it to him.

Miguel Cabrera got drunk with Sox players Friday night?
witesoxfan replied to scenario's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) Meh, Cabrera is a month younger than me, and I didn't have a hangover after Friday night. If there's ever a time my BAC approached .26, it was that night. You just have to manage things well at the very end if possible. I'm sure he was given plenty of fluids in his holding cell and Dombrowsky probably arrived with a few farking powerades! Of course, he went 0-for-the-weekend, so hopefully the Tigers lose tomorrow, and he can be cheaply dealt to us. hangover or not, I bet one of the last things you would have wanted to do was to suit up and play 9 innings of baseball -

QUOTE (son of a rude @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 12:45 PM) When my BAC is some number close to that, i feel s***ty for two days. not sure how he will play the next game. and hangovers get worse with age, even if you learn to tolerate them a bit better -
QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) I still don't get why so many guys here talk about trading a ton of talent and depth for Fielder or Gonzalez. Why not try to improve the club without sending out players? Matt Holliday has nearly the same value as Prince Fielder (5.4 WAR v. 6.2 WAR) and Adrian Gonzalez (6.4 WAR) but would cost only money -- probably less than it would cost to extend Fielder beyond his current deal. Granted, Holliday is a righty, whereas we need some lefty power. But still, doesn't it make sense to add some valuable bats without weakening out starting rotation, bullpen, or depth? Look at what Holliday did in the AL compared to the NL. Oakland is more of a pitchers park, but Busch Stadium favors pitchers too, and Holliday put up an OPS nearly 200 points higher in St. Louis. Giving him a monstrosity of a contract would be a huge burden to the franchise. There's no chance for it, and anybody who thinks it could happen is mistaken.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) Lexi walking 49 times is nothing to get loud about. Yeah, it's a lot more than 18. Still, nothing to get real excited about. Now if 49 turns into, I don't know, 75 next year? Then we're talking. Defensive CF didn't get solved until August. And he didn't hit. The ace we added made 3 starts. And this was hardly a career year for AJ. If Ramirez can walk 50 times while actually hitting for a bit of power (30 extra base hits is not what I will call power), then we really have something, and that could turn into an .825-.850 OPS. That would be a huge boost to the offense next season alone.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) I wonder what the Sox would look like today if Detroit had not have stepped in and one upped our offer to the Marlins for Miguel? a playoff team

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 09:46 PM) I was thinking about throwing Nix' embarrassing .229 with RISP in there, but I thought, hey, it's a long offseason... But seriously, I'll give them both a clean slate next year. I'm fine with that. We'll likely need them both. But the bottom line is that they were both pretty brutal this year, and that's what I had an issue with. I'll be rooting for them both like heck next April. Not to get into a nitpicking fight, but that .229 is higher than his season average. He's not a strong average hitter, and if you expected even a .250 average from him in any situation (unless it is against left handed pitching), then you were swimming without a paddle to begin with. If the Sox run a straight platoon of Nix and Getz next year, I think they'll be fine.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) I don't know what the Bills were expecting... He's the same mediocre coach who got fired in Chicago. I guess they were expecting something better than this. It did take Belichick till his second team to become a stud (and that is the last time I'm ever going to compare Jauron to Belichick). They apparently thought they saw something good. I told TRU that I give them till 2-5. It might happen sooner than that. I believe they've now lost atleast 8 games in a row within the division, and they obviously looked absolutely awful today, and that's two weeks in a row. I don't see them winning 6 games at this point. And I'm quietly hoping for Cowher or Shanahan. -

What would it take to get Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) its hard to decipher sarcasm on a first time poster within his first 5 posts. FYI, sarcastic comments are denoted in green font here but I don't use green. I'll save green for the grass -
QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) Not too subtle. There will be blood I think it'd be dangerous to do it this series, as even putting anyone on base is a threat that can keep the Twins alive. Maybe at this point, you are happy with just sending the Twins home for the playoffs; maybe you get them next April (or May, whenever they end up playing each other). I don't think you do anything about it today.

yeah, I saw it on deadspin first, it's still funny
