Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
witesoxfan replied to pmcochr's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) This is a Retherford move, not a Nix move. If Retherford hits at all in spring, which he will be invited too, he has the job. I do, however, think that Teahen will gets some reps at 2b. If the White Sox plan on competing, they don't go into Spring Training with Retherford being the plan at 2B, and I don't think you can count on Teahen to do anything other than be a mega-utility player if he is indeed acquired. You sign Hudson/Polanco for 2B or Beltre for 3B and move Beckham accordingly. -

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) So Placido Polanco stole SEVEN bases last year and got caught twice. If the Sox go after him, we'll still need speed. I think Kenny has something else up his sleeve. I HOPE Kenny has something else up his sleeve... Speed is not the end all be all. Just because a guy is fast doesn't make him good. I want good players, and if they happen to be fast, then so be it. Besides that, guys that can get from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to home is all the faster that they need to be. Not everyone has to be a track star. -

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) Makes no sense with all the speed talk-Getz stole 25. I dont know about Retherfords speed-but thats confusing. And mark T dont have a great arm. He did kill Buehrle though and hit well in the Cell- I see him at 3rd with Ramierez going back to second-where we won a division with him there Ramirez is going to play SS next season, unless he's traded. Beckham will man 2B or 3B, and Teahen will man RF or 3B. I could also see Teahen being Kotsay's replacement, even if Ozzie wanted Kotsay back, though with more versatility over the entire field. -

This does also open up an opportunity for Beckham to move back to 2B, which I think could very well be the likely scenario. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) No disagreement on that. I guess only time will tell and we will see what happens in ST 2010. When is that by the way? Starts in mid February, ends at the end of March, early April.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) Interesting. Good move by the Pirates. Rays made the deal for financial purposes I assume. And because Zobrist is just fine at 2B.

Are there other ways of re-booting a computer in safe mode? My computer apparently got jacked up by a couple of Trojans and a Packed.Generic (no idea which one), and it would be relatively simple to get it into a legitimate working order again, except that I literally cannot get my msconfig.exe to open up. I've tried a couple different routes to try and get there, and still have struggled. Still running Microsoft XP, and I'm thinking it's about time a new computer finds its way into my life.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) Has a pitcher ever gone on two days rest in the WS after pitching as much as Lee has in previous games? That might be a little crazy of an idea. His arm might fall off. I mean with that reasoning, just pitch Lee in Game Six and Seven. At some point you have to trust some other pitchers. I seem to remember Josh Beckett pitching on 2 days rest in the NLCS against the Cubs in 2003. And that was when he was a fun pitcher to watch because he was young and electric. Now he's a goddamn Red Sox.

He's a Boras client, so it'll be hell to deal with him.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 10:03 AM) http://619sports.net/3353/hey-padres-do-not-deal-adrian/ The Red Sox will be tough to beat out, but I think they want Felix more, and they won't have enough to acquire both. I also don't think the Mariners are going to be trading Felix any time soon. It just depends on whether they revert back to the late 90s, early 2000s where they dealt Griff and Johnson and obviously couldn't resign ARod, or if they'll go with what they did recently by resigning Ichiro. The Mariners have control of him through 2011, so they have time to make a decision.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) I'd rather have 10 five hundred thousand dollar guys trying to pitch in the pen than have one $5 mil guy f***ing up. I read that more as him saying that Linebrink would make Phillies problem worse, not that his departure would make the Sox worse.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 10:51 PM) Phillies show some spunk to cut it to 3-2. I can't get worked up about this series, though. The Phillies having won it last year takes a lot of drama out of it. They show their fans scared in the stands at times, but how can you feel for them. They f***ing won it last year. There's no feeling sorry or drama for Philly considering they are merely trying to win another one. Keeping a team that spent damn near like half a billion dollars from winning the World Series that still has to owe over a billion in contracts is reason enough for me.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) I don't understand what bat we are replacing? I love JD and what he did for the Sox while he was here...but he's done with the team. As has been said many times, the Sox want to get younger, faster and more athletic. That doesn't translate to home runs. The Sox don't need big boppers. They need guys who can hit 25-30 because in the Cell, that translates to roughly 30-35. They want to manufacture runs, not Earl Weaver them. That doesn't work...they've tried it. I don't think you are going to see any big signings, but possible an above average LH 4th outfielder that's going to rotate into DH. The Earl Weaver offense does work; the problem lies in the fact that you need guys who hit for average and get on base too. The Sox hit .258 (tied for last), put up a .329 OBP (10th) this year, and a .411 SLG (11th), which was good for 11th in the league in overall OPS and tied for last with a 90 OPS+. That is pathetic. Last year, the Sox finished 11th in AVG and 9th in OBP - still bad - but finished 2nd in the league in slugging; the result was 811 runs. I have no problem with a broader offensive attack, but they need to do it right. If they go ultra-grindy by manufacturing runs all the time, the offensive is going to struggle mightily. Being fundamentally sound and able to manufacture a run when you have to, yes, but nothing more than that.

If I'm Charlie Manuel, I have Cliff Lee start game 6. And game 7.

Reading this, it almost seems like Konerko and possibly Pierzynski are going to be made available (with the assumption that Linebrink is already available). Gonzalez talks about how the Sox have $71.5 mill locked into 10 players - I can check on Kal's spreadsheet, but I imagine that's Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, Linebrink, Thornton, Konerko, Pierzynski, Ramirez, Rios, Viciedo - and out of those, I can't see him moving Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, Thornton, Ramirez, Rios, or Viciedo, leaving Konerko, Pierzynski, and Linebrink. Linebrink is going to be tough to move just because of that contract, but it may be possible to deal him to a higher payroll club in need of a reliever. It was mentioned on here that Pierzynski is a huge Florida fan and was probably one of those watching the game during the disasterous road trip, so I imagine Ozzie's pretty pissed at him, and the fact that Flowers is practically ready will help in some regard as well. However, Pierzynski had a fantastic season, and he's relatively cheap still, and I don't think it's going to hurt Flowers if he spends a season in AAA. That leaves Konerko, who has become a relatively average 1Bman who doesn't do a whole lot defensively, is slow, and is owed $12 mill next year.

The Yankees proved this year that you can build a new stadium, even if the other is cherished historically, and still draw fans. If you are the Cubs, why don't you build a new stadium, make it look exactly like Wrigley Field, and then actually be playing in a state of the art stadium, rather than in a piece of s***?

Which one of you Nix lovers wrote this?
witesoxfan replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To be fair, Paul Konerko hit 18 home runs in 2003, and Scott Podsednik stole 12 bases in both 2007 and 2008. Given 600 PAs, it's not impossible that Jayson Nix could hit 18 homers and steal 12 bases, given that he hit 12 homers and stole 10 bases in 290 PAs. -
I pissed in a 64 ounce bottle of gatorade last night and filled it over halfway. That's a liter of piss for those of you keeping score at home.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 12:35 AM) The hiring of McGwire by St. Louis proves how meaningless hitting coaches are. McRae has a good hitting philosophy and they let him go. What is McGwire going to teach?? Uppercut, try to hit every pitch out of the park. And of course take enhancers? McGwire, like many (most) sluggers, tried to hit every pitch a mile. That was his hitting philosophy. All or nothing for Mark. LaRussa better hope the millionaire has a good work ethic, cause it seems to me hitting coaches are grunt boys: Make sure the players have their tapes ready, schedule extra BP, etc. What the heck is McGwire going to teach any hitter?? Rudy Jaramillo never played in the major leagues and is one of the best hitting coaches in the MLB. McGwire is fine. -

Sox need defense for serious run in 2010
witesoxfan replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) I agree that a solid bullpen is key, I was really jsut trying to make the point that going out and spending money/prospects on big name relievers isn't necessarily the way to do that. There are some consistent, successful relievers to be had, but they are rare and expensive. Of course, I also think that Jenks will recover nicely in 2010, but I think I'm in the minority there. Linebrink almost has to be better. Pena I am not sold on though. I think we try to go get one, consistent, lefty specialist. Jenks to close, Thornton and Linebrink* to set up, and fill the rest with Hudson, Carrasco, Pena/Nunez and the acquired left. I don't see the lefty as a big time acquisition, just a specialist. Linebrink is likely to have a solid first half IMO, at least, and then you can think about other moves if he falls off. Mind you, if we can get a solid setup guy to replace Linebrink this offseason and offload Liney's salary somehow, I am all for that. I just think its going to be really hard to do. My priorities for this offseason, if I'm KW: --DH --1 OF --Lefty reliever --Setup guy The first two being most important, the bottom two being lesser priorities. I actually have much more faith in Pena over the course of a full season than I do Linebrink. There has to be something about Linebrink's splitter or slider that absolutely destroys his arm and really inhibits him from throwing the pitch effectively throughout the course of the year, and then he has to depend on a 95 MPH straight fastball from mid-July on, which gets him crushed. Pena's stuff stayed the same, and his problem seemed to be leaving pitches up in the zone. FWIW, and I understand ERA isn't a great statistic to use, Pena's ERA with the Sox was 3.75. With the Sox, his control improved and he struck more hitters out, and also allowed fewer hits. I think Pena is going to have a great season next year as Dotel's replacement.
