Official 2008-2009 NFL Offseason Thread
witesoxfan replied to knightni's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) This is actually a great WR class if you ask me: Crabtree, Britt, Nicks, Robiskie, Iglesias, and Heyward-Bey. Robiskie is a middle round pick with #2 receiver upside at the absolute best. He's just not fast enough to be an absolute stud. Solid possession receiver at his best. Iglesias also seems like a prototypical slot receiver to me too. -
QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 08:48 PM) there are a couple of names there I wouldnt mind in a backup role. Jacque Jones and Shannon Steward sure would be better than Dewayne Wise. I'll take the durability and versatility (as limited as it is) of Wise over Shannon Stewart. Jones is intriguing, but he's a fringe player at this point in his career. He'll get signed to a MLC by some team this year and I'd imagine he'll see time in the majors too.

NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 10:01 PM) IMO Abreu makes us the favorite in the ALC. His OBP is 30 points higher then Dye's, he had a better AVG by a few points, he had 100 RBI unlike Dye, and I'm going to guess he had more SB's. Abreu would probably be our #2 hitter, no? RBI is a dependent statistic and has nothing to do with the caliber of the player himself. He had Johnny Damon (.375 OBP) and Derek Jeter (.363 OBP) hitting in front of him most of the year. Dye had guys who either got themselves home or didn't get on base much hitting in front of him. I will go on record as saying that Dye's the superior hitter, but he does not do nearly as much with the White Sox current lineup construction that Abreu would do, and that I am all for trading Dye and $3 mill for Bailey and a raw lower level prospect and then signing Abreu for $8 mill with a team option for next year. If the Reds are willing - I think some depends on whether or not they are interested or would think about bringing back Dunn - I could definitely seeing this being one of the few times the Sox would include cash in a deal just because of how much better the Sox are in the long-term. -

QUOTE (MO2005 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) Every team in baseball has ifs/question marks. The truth of the matter is the Sox have more ifs thatn 2 teams in the central meaning the twins and indians. The indians have sizemore, the twins have Denard Span, and we have Jerry Owens. That's a problem. We are adding Getz/Lillibridge and Fields to our lineup. Fields is NOT Crede at third. Bartolo Colon WILL be our 4th starter and no 5th starter at this point. That's a problem. Konerko's slumps are getting longer and Thome's career is getting shorter. Problem. We have very minimal speed on this team (not counting Owens cause who knows if he'll get on base). That's a problem. Our infield outside of Konerko has minimal experience in the bigs defensively. That's a problem. Just to summarize this team by far is a third or fourth place team on PAPER. Kenny has not made this team better Is there ever a bright side with the White Sox with you? Honest question. Were you actually happy when they won the division this year, or were you pissed that they didn't win it during the actual regular season? You just seem like you are always on the ledge, ready to jump off. Relax. Let atleast spring training happen. I understand pessimism with the current team - there ARE quite a few holes - but there are quite a few options for every hole within the organization. Take a damn chill pill and let everything work itself out. If the team sucks, so be it...the Sox look fantastic beyond this year, and even this team could win the division. -
QUOTE (Tmar @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 01:06 PM) Fact: Bears eat beets. what do you think the chances are of Steve Quentin having a good season?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) I'm a pretty big fan of Matty Murton, so i hope he works out their. If he and Carlos Gonzalez work themselves out they've got a pretty solid future. They really need to get rid of Helton in the worst way though. they have Helton for 3 more years at ridiculously expensive prices. They'd have to eat probably two bad multi-year contracts just to get the team to listen. It's probably worth it just to keep him unless some team is willing to eat the entirety of the contract (teams wouldn't even think of it until the last year, and even that would have to be at the deadline) and just let him continue putting up monster OBP's.

wasn't someone busy finding a key to lock this thread? It's getting a bit crazy at this point.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) 200 IP, 3.45 ERA at age 22? Yeah, those numbers are pretty much impossible to ignore. And considering that his K rate could increase due to his stuff and that his BB rate will almost certainly come down with maturity, he's almost certainly going to be one of the best pitchers in the league very, very soon. It's always a question of durability, and he's been good enough thus far.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) Ok here's a question. If you were offered Felix Hernandez for Carlos Quentin without thinking, Quentin's a Mariner
-
At this point I have to imagine he is strictly a lefty-platoon man that would have to prove himself healthy enough to play full-time for him to get a job, and he's strictly a DH/pinch hitter now a days anyways. If the Sox had room on the bench, he'd actually be a good guy to split time with Thome, but that bridge seems to have been burned and I'm not sure he'd even take a platoon role anyways. It seems as though he's probably being forced into retirement.

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) I wonder if the Mariners are on Dye's no trade list. Maybe there's a deal possible with them but not for TCQ. I think KW would trade TCQ if he were to get the right package and that package would have to begin with MLB proven stud starting pitching with lots of years before free agency. In other words, not very likely to happen. Why would you give up one of the best young hitters in baseball for guys like Washburn when there are cheap free agent pitchers available. If this rumor is not complete bs, then they must mean a trade around Dye. for whatever reason, rebuilding teams generally don't like to bring in 35 year old players.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 10:05 AM) Remember a few years back when "fixing" the Twins meant contracting the Twins as well as the Expos, and maybe the DRays as well? Amazing how things change. The DRays were never really considered for contraction thanks to their lease on Tropicana Field (I think they are "supposed" to stay there for like 25 more years unless they can get another stadium made for them). The thought process the entire time was to bring the totals in both leagues down to 14 to make an even number of teams in both leagues and thus never having problems with interleague. Having an odd number of teams in baseball will never work, as schedule setting would forever be messed up. It would have been really weird to see the DBacks in the AL West and the Rangers in the AL Central though.

perhaps I shall come on here sometime this weekend and try and sway some votes

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 10:34 AM) Yes. Perhaps 2003 by a little as well. I had the Sox pegged for 90+ wins in 03. With the amount of talent that team had, they should have been far better than they actually were. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) Did Tex get an opt-out clause? Every other long term Boras deal has seemed to sneak one in that suddenly becomes relevant 4 years down the road. No he did not. It was one of the big things that was brought up shortly after his signing. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) What's funny is BA hits .225 playing over his head for a defending champion and now you say he'll never hit .240. Lillibridge hits .220 in AAA hits .200 in for the Braves with a bunch of K's,and you say he'll give you more than BA? Please. Keep in mind BA is only 1 year older than him. Why do you drink KW's kool aid about Lillibridge but not BA? I would imagine it has to do with a lack of seeing Lillibridge. Stuff that's new always seems better. That, and by all accounts Lillibridge has a quicker bat at the plate, but that wouldn't necessarily assume better overall numbers. If Anderson puts up .240 and 20-25 homers, he'd be one of the most valuable members of the team. -
QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 1, 2009 -> 05:00 PM) Thanks for this wite. I'm right now eating a variation I made. Instant classic it is amazing. Everyone in the frat house loved it too.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 31, 2009 -> 03:16 AM) So about a month ago I went to the dermatologist to have two moles removed because they'd been getting bigger and bigger in the past few years. They basically numb the area and slice that chunk of flesh out with a knife. They did a biopsy on them and luckily they are not cancerous. Here's where it gets weird. One of them has healed nicely, the other one has grown back. Same size, same shape, same texture and almost the same color as before. In about two weeks it will look exactly like it did before I had it removed. Should I be concerned?? that is weird as hell. I'd atleast have the dermatologist check it out again just because it's such a weird case. It's probably not anything, but I've never had that happen. I've had problems with moles for years and have the battle scars to prove it - I get terrible keloids whenever I have moles removed - but I keep it under control and get them checked out atleast every year and sometimes twice a year. I'm the whitest guy you know in every regard you want to think about, because my chest hasn't seen the sun in about 3 years. Anyways, that just sounds strange. You should be good though.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) Sooo.... As a new PS3 owner since xmas I have had a great time exploring the system and a few games like NHL, Call of Duty, Tiger and now GHWT. Here is the question: Is it worth it for me to buy the drum kit and extra guitar for Guitar Hero, or should i get them for RB2? Or are they cross compatible? should be cross compatible

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 08:10 PM) Whaaaat??? That was crack I was smoking!!?? Not my fault officer. I didn't know what I was smoking, they didn't tell me!!! Sorry, ignorance is not an excuse. Are you going to get crack from a certified doctor? Because if you are, then I imagine you are fine. Not fine per se, but they cannot convict you of perjury in the court of law if a doctor says "this will help, don't ask what it is but it will help you" and you have no idea you are on crack.
