  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) I think this pretty much puts to bed any notion he's going to be a Top 30 prospect in all of MILB. 40-55ish is probably more realistic. Which, really, who cares? It's not as if that's a bad thing. Not trying to be a condescending jerk, it's just that his placement in the top 100 list, which will get some people fired up, means absolutely nothing. All that matters is that he's a good player and the White Sox have him.
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) As I said it's from Beane's own evaluation of the proposed deal. Just because other so-called experts don't agree, doesn't mean that Beane didn't think it was the best at the time. Just because people not involved with the deal think he should have gotten more doesn't mean someone offered more. I agree, and was posting the article in support of your statements. There are times when a GM knows something and takes what he can get. Sometimes GMs identify prospects they really like and they leave you scratching your head. I can think of two examples of that with the White Sox and one of them worked out (Garcia to Philly for Gio/Floyd) and one of them did not (Santos to Toronto for Molina).
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) That is very interesting. With that said, Snodgress is pretty bad and was not impressed by him at all. I too think it will be Surkamp and Duke as the lefties in the bullpen. He was absolutely atrocious and needs some time to work, but there's talent there. Lefties that throw 90-93 don't grow on trees, and I think he can ramp it up higher than that. I made mention of that earlier...you could see the Sox re-sign these guys if they don't get MLB contracts from someone else. The off-topic thing, but Wesley Wright getting non-tendered is really weird.
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 12:30 PM) It was fun. Some of the coolest parts are the non combat parts. I can see how it could take a long time if you are with people who haven't done it. I really had no idea what I was doing. I was just shooting randomly. I'm guessing you have a full group to pull it off. There's a video on YouTube (and I first saw it on Kotaku, which is blocked at work so I can't pull it up here) of 2 guys beating it. Watching them go through it, it's absolutely insane. You actually need 3 guys to get through the gate at the bottom of the pit, so they have to stop and get a 3rd guy to get them through the door, and then he leaves shortly after they get through it.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) It is funny that Cameron likes to say he made a case of it being a good trade, but then if you click on the article where he said that, he may have said that, sort of. He also made a case of it blowing up in their faces. To me, these type of trades usually work out a little differently from what the original reaction was. There is some reason Oakland dealt Donaldson, and it isn't money. They have more info on him than anyone else. I don't even think it is because he called the GM Billy Boy. It doesn't appear he was shopped around. Pretty sure he was dealing with some severe back pain down the stretch last year, wasn't he? Just everything about that situation reminded me of Crede. He had a great 2006 up until September and then he was never, ever the same player again.
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 11:53 AM) Do you honestly think Beane looked at all of the deals he could have made and said, "Out of all the deals out there, this is the third best so I will take it?" He obviously, thought by his evaluations this was the best deal. Maybe he knows something about Donaldson and his meteoric rise that other teams don't. 7. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:19 AM) Finally got to do the Vault of Glass in Destiny. Only took a little over an hour to complete. Sure helps when two of the people on my team have done it a dozen times. Looking forward to the Dark Below. Think I might try it this weekend as I'll have some time. I've been putting it off trying to strengthen my character but I saw some guys doing it last night when I was patrolling Venus and got an itch to do it.
  8. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 12:48 AM) I'm sure Medlen would like a 1-year deal to regain his contractual value. Let's sign him for 1 year, then flip him midseason for prospects. I know this gets said around here a lot, but if the White Sox are selling at the deadline this year, there has been a lot that has gone wrong for this franchise. We should not be hoping for this outcome whatsoever.
  9. I'm not gonna lie, as an outside, there's some entertainment value in seeing another franchise completely implode.
  10. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) I don't think you (and everybody else in this thread) are quite grasping how much Coors affects hitters. And I'm not taking the ball traveling and HR's. Look at the park factors from this year http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor those #'s are insane. Every single year Coors field is #1 in park factor and more specificly the hit factor. And then there's the fact that the Rockies WRC+ as a team is 17 points lower on the road than at home since the year 2002. Is that a big enough sample size for you? The next biggest disparity in the league is Arizona (#2 on that park factor list) at -9. And I could keep going about the foul territory and how Coors has the least amount of foul ball outs too. So yeah, if you believe it's merely a coincidence that Cargo's splits are so drastic then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you as well. I don't think there's any underestimation going on. I think the idea is that people are overestimating how much these splits matter. No one is saying that Carlos Gonzalez is going to be a .950 OPS bat (or whatever) if he were to stop playing his home games at Coors, but that he'd still be a pretty damn good hitter. Corey Dickerson is probably not a .930 OPS guy or a 140 wRC+ guy away from Coors, but it doesn't mean he's suddenly a bum.
  11. Dylan Axelrod was a free agent too after being non-tendered last year and ended up re-signing with the Sox. I'm guessing these guys get non-tendered with a handshake agreement that, if they can't find a major league deal, they'll re-sign on a minor league contract. Then, if a clear opportunity for an MLB spot arises with another organization, they do what they can to get them over there.
  12. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) What is the record for longest thread about a player who never ended up on the Sox? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) With a quick sort, it looks like Johnny Damon holds the record at 2122 replies. To piggyback off of this, the longest thread about a team interested in a Sox player with nothing happens appears to be Boston inquiring about Quentin. I was working in a kitchen at nights at that point in time and was playing video games otherwise. I was wondering how a thread made it to 1169 replies and I didn't have a single one of them.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:49 PM) The White Sox aren't going to eat a $4 million contract in January and I find it highly unlikely they'll be able to trade him in January if they haven't traded him yet. Only exception is if he's a "bad contract throw in" in a larger deal where he's treated as about as useful as Danks. IMO, he's a very likely starting corner OF if he's brought back. There's literally no other role for him on this roster. He's a terrible backup option, he's not taking playing time away from Laroche at DH, he's not moving positions. I think he could very easily be a better option against lefties at this point than LaRoche is, even with his sort of reverse-looking platoon splits the past couple years. Frankly, I think the modern game is all about keeping people fresh. I think Viciedo can help out with that quite a bit.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:45 PM) The ONLY one I can think of is upside, and that's less likely to show up in a part-time role. The $4m isn't really the issue -- it's the use of a 25 man roster slot on someone who doesn't help you win. A guy who can add value defensively is much better. Viciedo doesn't add value defensively OR offensively. I'd tender him a contract as a backup plan for starting LF. But I'd DFA him in a second if I got a real option in LF. I think having him as insurance for LF, RF, and 1B isn't a bad thing either. I think as a starting player Andy Wilkins is a better option, but there aren't a ton of guys I'd rather have starting in the system currently over Viciedo. It'd be nicer if he could play a lick of 3B, and maybe it's something they'd try and work him at to see if he can be passable as an option for a game or two. I'm not married to the idea, just that it's not the worst thing and you may be able to find a decent role for him as a bench player.
  15. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) Any guesses as to what the Sox would have to give up for Dickerson? Dickerson's numbers and five more years of team control will cost a pretty big haul. A lot. And his splits from last year don't paint him any prettier than Gonzalez.
  16. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) No contending team wants to carry a a 90 wRC+ DH/LF type as their 4th OF. You need someone that can play center, ideally can play it well so can be used as a defensive replacement in LF/RF as well. I disagree completely, there are myriad better ways to use both the money and the roster spot. edit: ha, me and Rowand on that same ish. Except that most of those 95 wRC+ players also don't have the talent Viciedo does either. He turns 26 next year and has position versatility. I really strongly doubt the player the Sox bring in to play LF will be incapable of playing CF, and they will have a true backup outfielder on the bench (I'm assuming Jordan Danks). That's 3 right there. It's not a salary that's going to prohibit any major signings and it's not a long-term thing. This is exactly the type of move White Sox fans have been clamoring for the Sox to make. Why is it different just because the player has been there for 3-4 years? I think this is going to be very similar to the Beckham situation last year, the Sox will rid themselves of him come late July or August, and they never have to worry about him again. But perhaps it will be sitting on the bench and learning and watching that will help him as a hitter.
  17. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) Name 24. Well, Jeff Keppinger is one, but the White Sox already did that one. They could also buy 2 million $2 cheeseburgers and fill the dugout, but they'd go bad before they could get eaten.
  18. As I mentioned in a different thread, there are much worse ways to spend a bench spot and $4 million than on Dayan Viciedo.
  19. Since we're getting in on the home/away debate, despite the fact that most hitters will hit better at home so long as their ballpark is not some hitter masoCHASM, let's look at Corey Dickerson's, shall we? 2014 Home: .363/.415/.684/1.098 Away: .252/.305/.431/.735 NO COREY, THAT'S A BAD COREY All I take out of those numbers are that a good hitter hit better at home than on the road and he's not going to be cheap.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) I would not send that to Oakland for 1 year of Samardjiza. I would hate that deal. I'd hate that deal not because i love those players, but because that basically means we are done with trades because that is all of our talent I wouldn't identify as core prospects. There's more than that. The only two prospects who are close to untouchable should be Rodon and Anderson. I'd personally add Semien in there too, but I'm not the GM and it seems he is a guy people view as tradeable. I would do that trade in a millisecond.
  21. QUOTE (South Sider @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) I've read a lot of your posts here before creating an account, and you seem like a very knowledgeable poster. A post of mine detailing an offer I'd make for Shark is in the last page. Do you have any thoughts on it? Would you do that deal? Would the Sox do that deal? Would Beane die of laughter? It's clear the Red Sox can surpass that deal, but if they don't.... Montas, Sanchez, Davidson, and (presumably a lower level prospect) probably gets you in the door but ultimately doesn't get it done. You argue that it's a top of the rotation arm, a starting 2B, a starting 3B, and a live arm who can improve and be a great bullpen piece for you. Beane counters that by saying Montas is probably a reliever, Sanchez is probably a utility player, Davidson is probably a bust, and the arms usually amount to nothing while you're getting a year and a 1st or high 2nd at minimum for Samardzija. The Red Sox absolutely do not want to trade away Xander Bogaerts, but if they offer him up at all, the A's have already made up their mind. They have about 15 other pieces they can deal too due to their depth. Frankly, I'm very skeptical about the Sox trading for him and really hope he doesn't come to Chicago.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:09 PM) Baseball America ‏@BaseballAmerica 2m2 minutes ago White Sox Believe Anderson Needs More Time In Minors http://ow.ly/2RwvNy wite believes North Dakota is cold in December
  23. QUOTE (South Sider @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:41 PM) Good point... sigh. I can only hope that Boston doesn't blow Beane away with an offer. If given the choice between two packages of similar values between White and Red Sox, I would have to think he would choose the White Sox offer if only to not bolster an opponent that he may see as more of a present-time threat to his World Series chances. I don't think we want to see the White Sox trade for Samardzija. I really don't. Beane typically asks for and gets the moon for his players.
