Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
witesoxfan replied to Rooftop Shots's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 10h10 hours ago Pitches thrown in reg. season:Samardzija 12,567; Lester 26,321; Scherzer 20,944; Cueto 19,518; Hamels 27,886; Price 19,336; Shields 29,461. I just want to note how much I hate these types of statistics. This acts as if Samardzija's arm is fresh and young despite his age. Between college, the minors, and the pros, Jeff Samardzija has thrown over 1,500 innings. Are they going to be saying the same thing about Jake Arrieta in 2 years too when he's "only" thrown 12,000 pitches? Because between college, the minors, and the pros, he's already thrown 1,269 innings. I mean, if you looked at this and solely this, you'd assume that Lester has throws more than twice the number of innings. In reality, he's thrown fewer than 600 more. Max Scherzer has only thrown 100 more innings. Just because a guy has only thrown in the MLB for so long doesn't mean there isn't extra mileage on his arm. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 11:59 AM) Oh I don't know about that. Just imagine giving Tank that kind of contract. You can also imagine Viciedo hitting better and being a more athletic and better defender. If he were, he'd easily get a deal like this. I don't think this is that bad of a deal. -
He's not going to accept the assignment. He will request free agency and take someone else's money.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 05:49 PM) Any chance we can get the Red Sox to take Danks? They currently have exactly zero starting pitchers. They have a guy named Rubby in their rotation. Rubby. Probably not. And Rubby de la Rosa averages 94 with his fastball. He's a talented kid.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) I buy all of this except for "it's harder to justify....when the restive their team is still very good". I think that's exactly the time you make that type of aggressive move to fill in the gap in your roster with the best player available. It makes a helluva lot more sense for the Dodgers to trade a top flight prospect for a player to fill a hole than it does for the White Sox to do it because that guy who can contribute right now may well put them over the top when the prospect's peak is probably several years away. yes, the Dodgers can make moves that fill the void without giving up their top flight guys, and if they're convinced they're sitting on the next 4 rookies of the year again that's exactly what they should do, but ask yourself this question; how much are you willing to risk on missing the playoffs by 1 game? I think we could argue this until the cows come home. Ultimately, the Sox have to ask for Seager or Pederson. I think the Dodgers will turn their noses up at that, and no deal will be worked out. In that regard, I hope I'm wrong because I'd personally be OK with the Sox not competing for another year to acquire a talent like one of those two and I think Hahn would feel the same way.
-
For the record, I'm not disagreeing with what you guys are saying, but it's a hell of a lot harder to justify trading those insanely talented prospects for a shortstop when the rest of their team is still very good. I'm not saying they won't, and I'm not saying the Sox shouldn't ask for those guys. What I am saying is that I think there will be other shortstops available, either through free agency or available via trade, that will cost them less and will replicate similar numbers to Alexei Ramirez. If the Dodgers offered, hypothetically here, Zach Lee to the Twins for Eduardo Escobar, with the Twins girth of offensive prospects and a guy like Danny Santana who is also capable of playing shortstop, do you think the Twins are in a position to turn that down? Maybe they negotiate the price up a bit, but then the Dodgers have a control of the player for a lot longer, don't pay as much, and have a similar though inferior player without giving up one of their top prospects. That is primarily why I don't see any way a deal is worked out between the Dodgers and the Sox that involves Alexei Ramirez. His value to the Sox right now is too great. They are on the verge of competing and dealing your starting shortstop for a package of prospects just doesn't seem to be the best use of resources. If you get the right player, you make it in a second and ask questions later, but I don't foresee that as a possibility.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) On Stephen Drew Stephen Drew had a .237 OBP in 2014. That ranks as the 15th-worst single-season OBP by a 2B since 1914 (300 plate appearances min.). https://twitter.com/BtBScore/status/535302550778413057 Stephen Drew regarded one of best free agent shortstops, but his numbers since 2011 season lend pause: 1,000 at-bats, 220 hits. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/537606668318961664 In 2013, Stephen Drew had a 3.4 WAR for the Boston Red Sox. During that season, he hit the ball fairly well, drew his fair share of walks, and hit for power. He's a good defensive player and a guy who can hold his own at the plate. As a buy low option, he's perfectly acceptable.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) I read today, the reason why some teams are passing on Drew is that his offensive numbers have been unsteady. that is the best summation I can do. He was terrible last year and if the Sox did trade Alexei, he'd be a really nice buy low option for the Sox. He's only a year removed from being a 3.5 WAR player, but he has been an inconsistent player throughout the course of his career. You'd only want to sign him for a year and he'd only want to sign for a year too.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) And if the Dodgers are willing to let their playoff hopes next year ride on those 2 guys, I say more power to them. They clinched a playoff spot by 12 games and the division by 6 games (and the 2nd place finisher, who won the World Series, also happened to lose a 3+ WAR player to the Boston Red Sox, so those cancel each other out to some extent). I think they'll be OK.
-
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) I was looking at his overall numbers, not his splits against righties. Well it's because he's absolutely horrendous against lefties and a wrecking ball against righties. He's not anything special defensively either, but he's absolutely a valuable player for the Sox moving forward.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Tomas to AZ for Abreu money. Given that price tag, the Sox either feel they have their money committed elsewhere more appropriately right now or they really did not like what they saw from Tomas. That is a seemingly incredibly reasonable price tag. -
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) I'll play along: Eaton - L Semien - R Cabrera - S Abreu - R LaRoche - L A Garcia - R Gillespie - L Ramirez - R Flowers - R Semien moves from 2B to 3B when we face a lefty, with Sanchez coming off of the bench. There is absolutely no way to justify Sanchez playing everyday at this point. He doesn't do anything well. But then again, neither does Gillespie... This is patently false. Conor Gillaspie's .352 wOBA was 43rd best in the majors and his 124 wRC+ was tied for 44th. He was a very good hitter against RHP this past season. Anybody saying Gillaspie doesn't do anything well really needs to dig a little deeper.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) If the White Sox were a team that had just won a division and made the playoffs 2 years in a row and lost a key part of their infield to free agency, then Tim Anderson for 2 years of Alexei Ramirez would sound pretty decent to me. Or you could just give money, acquire a slightly inferior player in Asdrubal Cabrera or Stephen Drew, and keep your prospect of the future.
-
QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) The Dodgers are NOT trading Corey Seager. This would be like the White Sox trading Tim Anderson for 2 years of Alexei Ramirez if he weren't already on the team. The Dodgers want a stopgap player until Seager is ready for MLB, trading Seager for a stopgap veteran makes exactly ZERO sense. That's assuming Seager can play SS at the MLB level. We can safely do that for now. Yeah, I don't see any way that Alexei Ramirez ends up in LA.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) Why does this point still have to be made? Juan Diaz is irrelevant. It shouldn't and yes he is unless the Sox are hit by the deepest of injuries. It'd be sweet if they found their JD Martinez, but I feel safe saying no, that's not going to happen.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 06:57 AM) (Juan Diaz Stuff) Just so we can get this stuff in the open- In 9 seasons in the minors leagues: .259/.314/.371/.685, 3936 plate appearances Juan Diaz is minor league filler. If he has anything more than 100 plate appearances for the White Sox, they're screwed.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) I agree wholeheartedly. In my mind, I think the best - and possibly only - deal for Alexei would be with the Mets, and only for Zach Wheeler. That would give us a young cost controlled RH starting pitcher, would also allow us to chase either Headley or Melky, and would allow us to add a closer, or even go after Shields. How about a rotation of Sale, Shields, Quintana, Wheeler and Danks (unless we could move him for Papelbon!)? Everything looks awesome except James Shields. If they got Wheeler for Alexei, they'd use Danks and Noesi as the 4th and 5th starters to begin the year with Rodon waiting in the wings whenever the organization deems he's ready.

Geoff Blum has the highest OPS in World Series history and that is a record that will never be broken.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) I think the point is we continue to play hardball and see if the Dodgers ultimately end up biting. Hahn can continue to be out in the media talking through our plans to make big moves, etc. The reality is trading Alexei for Pederson or Seager would be a good deal for the Sox and given the Dodgers situation, you could justify the move on their end. If we move Alexei, it should be for a potential difference maker. Pederson is ready to play in the majors. Is he ready to be a star in year one, no, but you can't have that expectation out of any rookie. I absolutely agree with all of this. It's the only way the White Sox can justify trading Alexei.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:52 AM) You don't win in the NFL because of skill position players. There are plenty of other areas that are far more key to upgrading, imo, so to give up an extra first rounder for a wideout is just not smart. The Bills OLine has struggled this year, but their defense has been incredible. The other huge area of weakness was QB, and having just drafted EJ last year, and looking at the production of the QBs over the last two years, I think it's safe to say they were better trading up for Sammy than they were any of the other QBs. -
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:53 AM) Heard this on the local LA sports radio yesterday, the Sox were asking for a package that included one or the other. I think it was Kevin Kennedy who seemed to imply it would be a good move. Dodgers are definitely a win now team. Seager and Pederson are not MLB ready. Seager isn't, but Pederson definitely needs his meddle tested in the majors at this point. If they could get Pederson, this move would have been done already.

Eh, Watkins has yet to miss a game despite dealing with a few maladies throughout the year whereas Beckham has already dealt with some injuries and Cooks is done for the year. Also, Cooks is a completely different player than both of those. Evans was the guy I initially wanted and I would have been happy with him, but that was still going to cost a 2nd next year or a 3rd this previous year at the very least, and then they'd be without Preston Brown who's turning into an absolute stud of a linebacker. Put in the same situation, I'd still trade up for Sammy but would try and include the 2nd rounder from this year opposed to the 1st from next. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) well you must see something that i can't but ..... ok. Bradley Jr is an incredibly talented player. He'd be a great piece to acquire because that talent should help him to be a very good 4th outfielder at the very, very least with a 4-5 WAR potential in CF at his very best.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 06:21 AM) I totally forgot that Semien can play 3b. here is why I was wondering about J Francisco is in 120+ less at bats, then DV against RHP, he out hit DV, more 2b and belted 15 hrs. he is also 3+ mil cheaper. now I do not know if his contract stated a ARB or not. not enuf info. DV hit RHP not LHP, someone mention that he can platoon with Adam, but Adam also hits RHP and not too good against LHP but still is way better than DV. Conor hits RHP but not too good with LHP. so in this stats, it appears that J. Francisco(27) will be the better backup than DV(25). granted there is always that elusive hope that DV can get better. but in less than 120 ab's Francisco out produce the hitting and power stats of DV. Juan Francisco's career average against left handed pitching is .159. I don't even need to look at anythign else. He's not a better option than Viciedo and he doesn't play LF.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:28 PM) If got to Boston, that means the White Sox passed on him once already. Boston had a worse record than the Sox did this year so that's not necessarily true. Still, Francisco wouldn't add a lot to the Sox. He's a left handed hitter who's bad defensively. He's also struck out at a 34.4% clip for his career, has only a 7.4% walk rate, and he can't hit lefties. He'd have virtually no spot on the Sox roster and if both Gillaspie and Semien were to get hurt - your #1 and #2 on the 3B depth chart as of this moment - I'd rather throw Davidson into the fire as there's limited data on him as opposed to Francisco where we basically know what we have already.
