  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 05:02 PM) Someone with a better baseball mind tell me if we should expect Samardzija's current trend to continue and for him to be one of baseball's best #2 starters the next couple seasons. We should expect Samardzija's current trend to continue and he should be a good pitcher for the next 5 years or so. Anything more than a 5 year contract would get hairy (no pun intended...because Samardzija is hairy). He's been a very good pitcher the last 4 years and there's no reason for that to suddenly stop barring injury, which can happen at any time.
  2. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 04:50 PM) I want them to bring back Belisario as a MR, the dude has potential and he throws heat. He is going to be a good reliever. He might have good stuff and he may throw heat but he's also 31 years old and he's going to start trending the other way. I do not think good MLB reliever is in his future.
  3. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) Who's this other guy, Michael Ynoa? He "looks" like a right handed Chris Sale. ( 6'7' 209) Once a big time prospect. He signed for a then record $4.25 million signing bonus as an amateur. Shoulder injuries have derailed him somewhat, but he still possesses nice stuff and is a worthy gamble. Likely going to project as a reliever at this point but he can't be ruled out as a starter yet.
  4. QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Wasn't Swisher? AJ was a cancer towards the end. So yeah. It's hard to get a read exactly on situations like that. I've rumblings that Keppinger was too.
  5. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 03:49 PM) yeah that was a given after getting Royce Clayton and that cancer. someone said, when i came back for a visit, on Rush. the sox will never get another cancer, they will do their due diligence and get as much background info. The Sox will have another clubhouse cancer at some point in time. It's frankly inevitable.
  6. Multi year offer doesn't mean much of anything to me. Frankly, I'd have no problem signing Masterson to a 2 year, $8 million deal because I think he can get a 1 year, $8 million deal. Depending on the AAV, that might be a really bad deal for him.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) anymore on that interview? No, that was a fake manufactured quote by me.
  8. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 03:01 PM) Bernstein is such as a$$. He asked JS what he thought about not being with the Cubs because of how good they are going to be in the next few years. He has his nose so far up Epstein's rear it isn't funny. "I think it's fine because I'll be a member of the best team in Chicago."
  9. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) I want to be excited but I am a bit troubled by him moving from the NL, and a pitchers haven to the Cell.... The stuff will play just fine. Samardzija is a really good pitcher.
  10. Updated the topic title for clarity. There is nothing set in stone yet.
  11. If you can still get an elite uber prospect like Seager or Pederson, I'd still make the deal, but that will never happen, so no, he isn't going anywhere.
  12. QUOTE (South Sider @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) Just getting back to Ynoa for a second. Maybe I'm placing a little too much faith into our front office and talent evaluators, but there's no doubt to me that the White Sox were the team who wanted to expand this deal to include Ynoa. It could explain the weeklong or so holdup. The Sox see something that they really like in Ynoa and targeted him, and got their man. He's a good buy low candidate. Good for the Sox. The front office has to be very pleased right now. I think more of what you see is different front office philosophies. The White Sox gave up a lot of good, not great players in this deal while the A's gave up some high end talent but not a ton of it. There are statistics and tools and all kinds of things being evaluated differently here. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if all of the guys the Sox gave up ultimately turn into 2 WAR players each season, which is nice, but can create a bit of a roster crunch, whereas Samardzija is about a 4 WAR player and Ynoa has 2 WAR upside as a reliever and more than that as a starting pitcher. (I still think Semien is going to be the best of this bunch, but I kind of like the A's so at least he ended up there instead of like the Yankees or something)
  13. Cam Newton injured in a car accident http://www.tmz.com/2014/12/09/cam-newton-i...d-in-car-wreck/
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) Ack, he's a bust...but has some upside for the pen at least. The Sox have acquired other busts and turned them into big time players previously. I don't mind it at all.
  15. Wow, Ynoa is a nice get. Really nice tools, K rate of 12+ in the minors last year.
  16. This could ultimately turn into a really, really good deal for the Athletics, but I'm not really upset about those other two at all.
  17. QUOTE (shysocks @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) That is upsetting. I don't think so. I like Ravelo, but I don't think he was ever going to get a shot with the Sox. Frankly, it's better seeing Ravelo go than Anderson.

  19. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) Susan Slusser ‏@susanslusser 14s15 seconds ago The #Athletics are actually getting four players in the Samardzija deal I hear. And #WhiteSox getting two. Reddick makes a lot of sense.
  20. That would be dumb. They have two lefties for the MLB bullpen and a third in Onelki. Use him as a starting pitcher. Stay out of this one KW.
  21. QUOTE (shysocks @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) I will miss Semien a lot, I really think he is starting 2B material. I seem to be in the minority but that's a steep price for a rental. Bassitt is no great loss, and presumably the third guy won't be either. If we can extend Samardzjia, great. If not, and I've only seen a few people mention it in this (epic, hilarious, exciting) thread, cutting him loose with the QO attached will ease the pain a little. That comp pick is probably more valuable than Bassitt + #thirdguy. I do not believe they are going to let Samardzija hit free agency. The Sox typically won't trade for a guy like this without some assurance or knowledge that said player wants to stick around long-term.
  22. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) So I should speculate that KW is behind all of this and Hahn is doing nothing for us? Ever since KW was moved into his made up position he seems hellbent on moving back into the spotlight. I think it's safe to speculate that Hahn and Williams work hand in hand with Hahn taking on the day to day responsibilities of the job so Williams can focus on bigger picture ideas and when something important like this comes up, they both have a hand in it. They are, effectively, "co-managers"
  23. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Thanks for the clarification. Definitely the best move would be to trade for one of the dodger OF's, and since Danks is the only piece that makes sense to give up for expensive, underachieving OF's, I'd try to get Ethier Ethier is risky, and the Sox aren't saturated in starting pitching, but I think it'd be a worthwhile risk if the Dodgers include money to make up the difference. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) You're still losing your 3rd round pick and bonus pool. There is obviously value there. I trust KW when he says the SOX are going to get creative now. I just don't think Melky is gonna happen anymore - but I hope I am wrong. Although, I do think Rasmus is getting undervalued in this market. He could be a nice guy to have around. I know Rasmus is brought up quite a bit, but I just find that signing to be incredibly unlikely.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) I'd say that signing another QO free agent seems to make even more sense now. We've already given up the 2nd round pick, why should we hesitate on giving up a 3rd round pick? The issue sounds like they're running out of funds available to spend on those free agents, not that they're worried about giving up the pick. And while it hurts in drafting someone who maybe will be considered a difficult signing - like a Rodon - they can and likely will instead draft someone who is a bit more signable so they can pocket that money and perhaps draft a guy who slips a bit in the 4th or 5th round.
