2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) I don't think he gets much more, if any more, than Lester. Lester did not cost a draft pick plus Lester is a lefty. To teams that don't already have Kershaw or Sale, being a lefty is in high demand. I don't think teams are too concerned about the draft pick for Lester. We've seen that matter at times, but when the guy is a bonafide #1 or #2, it won't make much of a difference. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) Tendering Viciedo a contract is going to be the one mistake Rick's made this offseason from my perspective. Are people so done with Viciedo that they'd rather go with someone like Jordan Danks, JB Shuck, Trayce Thompson, or some other NRI type of player? I'm not happy with Viciedo either, but $4 million isn't a ton in today's game (teams will pay $7-7.5 million on the open market for 1 WAR, and it wouldn't be surprising if Viciedo ended up at 0.5 WAR), and if the difference between getting a guy who could make or break the season is $4 million this season, Reinsdorf would make the move. He paid $4 million for one month of Manny Ramirez, and that was like 5 years ago when the value of money was greater than it is in today's environment.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 05:00 PM) I posted it a couple weeks ago, but Danks had 20 quality starts last year. I'll take that from my 5TH starter anytime. He may be overpaid, but he is not awful. What does that mean though? In today's context, a "quality start" in regards to the statistic that tracks games of 3 ER or fewer in 6 IP or more is not always a quality start in the realm of things, because that is, at its worst, a 4.50 ERA, which is below average. It also says that an 8 IP, 0 ER is the exact same thing as a 6 IP, 3 ER game, which is obviously not anywhere close to true, but that's a different argument. Plus, if a guy goes 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, do you really feel, in today's environment, that you have a good chance at winning that game? The Sox had a middle of the pack offense next year - the 8th most runs scored, putting 7 ahead and 7 behind - and in 77 of their games, they scored 3 or fewer runs. That's almost half their games scoring 3 or fewer runs. Frankly, the quality start statistic, as defined, is vague and flawed and I really don't think it should be used. A simple change to say "2 ER or fewer in 6 innings or more" would change things quite a bit, as they scored 2 or fewer runs only 50 times and you do feel pretty good about winning if your starter gives up 2 runs or fewer, geuinely implying a quality performance.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) That is simply not true. Right. He was one of the worst qualified starting pitchers, but that's a huge distinction. The White Sox just traded a starting pitcher away who I would qualify as one of the worst starters in the majors last year. If they can find a deal where they get someone else or they can dump him without eating a huge portion of his contract, great, but I'm OK with going into the year with him as the 4th starter. I'd like for them to acquire another starting pticher, but I don't know that it's in the cards. I see an outfielder being the biggest priority at the moment and they can play the rotation situation by ear.

Yoenis Cespedes traded to Detroit for Rick Porcello

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) Can Gose hit? Can JD Martinez do the same thing Gillaspie is attempting or was it a fluke? Will Castellanos take the next step? What happens at SS between Suarez and Iglesias? How long before Victor and Cabrera fall apart? What happened to the "real" Alex Avila...or is this the version they're stuck with? How long before that bullpen completely implodes again? Most importantly, which Verlander are they left with for the remainder of that contract? Can Anibal Sanchez remain healthy? They've traded Smyly/Porcello/Fister, lost Scherzer and replaced that with bigger question marks. Bottom line...still the favorite because the Royals haven't done anything yet other than sign Hochevar and Morales. Dyson in the OF over Aoki's probably a wash at best. The moral of this story is that, depending on how deep you want to look into a situation, you can find enough question marks to question your own existence. -
White Sox acquire Dan Jennings for Andre Rienzo
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:04 PM) Just pointing out factors. If Jennings and his 1.5 WHIP was on this team, you guys would want to cut him. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:06 PM) The WHIP is the exact reason I can't get overly ecstatic about this trade. I just don't know how you can have sustainable long term success based with that sort of WHIP. Not all WHIP is created equal though. I see a guy who gets a lot of ground balls who was on a team who may not have had a ton of range or defensive prowess. The Sox infield defense could be better than it is, but I feel safe saying it's better than the Marlins. Maybe the Marlins can tweak Rienzo, but I was definitely wrong on him. We're complaining about Jennings putting up a high WHIP in the majors, but Rienzo's was just as bad in AAA this past year, which does not bode well. -

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) It wouldn't surprise me if Rienzo has a good major league career. He has a plus pitch. I don't think the Sox liked him though. Jennings walks too many. Bad WHIP. We'll see. I geuinely think you are the only White Sox fan who could find anything wrong with this deal at all. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) (Just like they reactions to the Heaney deal, when the very people laughing at the Rays want to trade Montas for far less than Dee Gordon). I don't think anyone has suggested trading Frank Montas for a player who is inferior to Dee Gordon.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) Jon HeymanVerified account @JonHeymanCBS ervin santana is going to the twins. @JeffPassan says will $54M, 4 yrs Well, I think I said I'd give him 3/$42 yesterday. I wouldn't have given him the 4th year guaranteed. Good for him. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) what a trade, i think Det is a little worst than the day before. they lost a very good pitcher. however, looking in the central division, they are still favorites. the sox is gaining ground rather quickly. Red Sox are putting together a very strong team. they have to be favorites now coming out of the east. damn, good trading, it must be nice to have the prospects to do that. ....... freaking KW! Dodger looks to be the favorite coming out of the NL. I think the Tigers are worse than they were last year, but that's because they are essentially replacing Porcello and Scherzer with Greene and Simon. From yesterday to today, assuming they knew they were not going to resign Scherzer, I think they've improved. They are trying to sneak a few years in there before their window closes, and I think they're about 2 years from it closing shut. -
Yeah, Webb isn't a guy I'd look to move. Frankly, Petricka is more along the lines of someone the Sox would move, someone they feel is overvalued by the market.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Take Ravelo off the add list. But yes, that is much improved. He's got it listed correctly. Ravelo was both added and dropped since the last day of the season.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) The tigers are worse now than 24 hours ago. Wow. Thanks guys. Have fun in 3rd place. I don't necessarily agree with this. I still think they're the favorite in the division and by quite a bit too. -
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Question, the minor league guys selected in AAA and AA phase. Can they be returned to their previous team or no? Yes. If a player is selected in the AAA phase, he must remain at the AAA level (or higher) all year or he is returned to his previous team. There are smaller amounts to those, but they still cost money as well and you are offered some back if the team wishes to get the services back. However, due to the nature of the minor leagues, you will rarely see those guys returned, so Peter Tago is very likely to remain with the Sox.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) Leyer, pitcher went to Cincy. The one that starts with e. Euclides Leyer. Not a big loss.

witesoxfan replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) .763 OPS in CF is far more valuable than .751 OPS in LF, plus on top of that there is the difference in the defensive value of the two players. For all intents and purposes, Eaton and Cespedes were equally valuable players last year production wise when they were on the field last year. Cespedes's fWAR was 3.4 and Eaton's 2.7, but their WAR/600's were 3.16 and 3.01 respectively, which leads us to believe that there is virtually no difference. However, while I think Cespedes has peaked as a player, I believe there is a lot of room for improvement from Eaton. His base running numbers, despite his speed, were actually a negative last year despite a good speed rating. I'd blame this on overaggressiveness on the base paths both when stealing (15 of 24 in stolen bases) and getting thrown out trying to take an extra base. I recall off hand a game in Minnesota where he got a hit and tried to advance to 2B and the ball was cut off and he was thrown out. There was no need for him to go in that instance. I also feel it's very possible that his defense was underrated via UZR as DRS really liked him and scouting reports indicate he was above average. If you asked me who I'd rather have moving forward, regardless of cost or service time, it would 100% be Eaton. -

QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) For context, Adam Eaton had a .763 OPS with 1 HR last season Which was good for a wRC+ of 115. He was a good hitter too. It was implied, though, that his .730 and .750 OPS were not good, but that provides no context at all. His wRC+ (or even his OPS+, though I feel wRC+ is better) adds contextual evidence to the statistic and let's us know how he was compared to the league average. If he put up a .730 OPS 10 years ago, yes, it would have been bad. In today's game, it's perfectly acceptable. -
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 10:56 PM) Don't let Hahn know or he might stop assembling a potential contender. Are the cubs and royals going to switch off year to year as world series winners? The Astros have to get one in there too.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) Which is why a couple prospects are coming over with him. Yep, otherwise I frankly think Porcello for Cespedes isn't a half bad deal. Cespedes does some small things well that really help a team. That .751 OPS that was posted earlier is actually fairly good. I think this is a good move by Detroit to shore up their offense. -
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) Someone made the point in the Ichiro thread that the .284 was an "empty" .284. Might be true, but his defense and speed would be better than Viciedo. I'm beginning to think I could see him as a starter. His defense isn't anywhere near what it used to be and I don't think he's particularly fast either. He's 41 guys. As a 4th outfielder, he'd be perfectly fine, but I don't think he'd be a 4th outfielder which I feel would inevitably make him a liability at this point. Frankly, on the off chance that Viciedo shows the patient, staying back on the ball approach that he shows for 2 weeks out of the year for 6 weeks instead, I'd rather go with him. Also, I do not believe for a second that they are up against their actual money limit, but they are probably nearing it for their current budget. I don't see a Tanaka or anything like that on the horizon, so they probably don't want to spend much more than they currently have and want to save room for some smaller additions as well.

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) Watching him in NY - you'll see Yes, when I think of guys who suck, I think of guys who strike out 12 guys per 9 innings over the course of their career.

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:50 PM) You will be sorely disappointed over the next four years ..... Hahn's Dunn. They already released Keppinger
