QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) I'm using those numbers to say he wasn't always overrated. If the sox got him for 15 million AAV over the 5 yrs and produces along the lines of his 2014 stats of .287 average, .346 obp, .506 slg, .852 ops, 25 hr, 38 2b and 89 rbi's then he's not that overrated. I don't care if he was or was not overrated in 2011, I'm saying that right now, in today's game, he is overrated and may be the most overrated player in the league. The fact that you are using his offensive output and ignoring his defensive output to suggest that he is somehow reasonably worth $21+ mill per year is outrageous.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) I would prefer to stay away from ethier. He needs to be platooned. That package you suggesting is going to be more then alexei from the sox. I would also stay away from Semien at 3rd. He has 14 errors in 50 appearances there over the last 2 years. 33 appearances in 2014 and 10 errors alone. Until he fixes his defense there I would be worried. Platoons aren't bad things. That package that he suggested could be an absolute heist for the Sox, but I doubt the Dodgers would make it. Semien is perfectly fine defensively - quick feet, soft hands, good arm - but his footwoork has been poor as he has rushed his throws. That's something that improves with time and repitition.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) Kemp maybe overrated now but when he signed that contract he put up numbers teams dream about in 2011. Hit .324, obp .399, slug .586. Ops .986, 39 hr, 126 rbi's, 33 2b and 40 sb. If you can get the dodgers to knock off some money and is less the the amount that Sandoval and Hanley ramirez is going to get then he's not that overrated. The only thing slowing kemp down is the injuries but he played 150 games last year. You are using numbers from 2011 to justify bringing in Matt Kemp in 2015.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) No matter the circumstances? Well no matter the realistic circumstances. If the Sox got him for $10 mill a year and didn't pay much, I'd be perfectly content, but that's not going to happen. I'm not entirely sure how motivated the Dodgers are to move Matt Kemp specifically, but they should be motivated to move an outfielder or two. However, I think there will be teams who are interested in Matt Kemp that would eat most or all of the salary if given for essentially free or will give up legitimate prospects if the Dodgers eat his salary. The Sox would probably be in the conversation if they traded Alexei Ramirez for him, but that's a lateral move at best to me and could just as easily put them in contract purgatory hell, which puts them in a worse situation. There's just nothing about Matt Kemp and his overall game that makes me think he's gonig to be the missing piece of the puzzle for the White Sox. Frankly, I think Nelson Cruz accmplishes roughly the same goal as bringing in Matt Kemp but that likely only requires a 3 year deal at the most and it could easily be a 2 year deal, and I don't want them signing Nelson Cruz either.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 8m8 minutes ago Breaking: Kyle Seager, Mariners on the verge of a seven-year, $100M extension. News at Yahoo Sports: http://yhoo.it/1rjiQ0C Well worth it, he's a hell of a player. -
I'm going to be upset if the White Sox big plan is to acquire Matt Kemp. He is one of the more overrated players in the league. Given the contracts Hahn has given out to this point in his GM career, bringing in a guy with 5 years and $107 million left on his deal is not his MO, especially when said player is 30 years old.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 08:39 AM) And he looked horrible last year in his stint in the Majors. He's not the first guy to ever look bad in his first stint in the majors either. I'm not advocating Andy Wilkins as a full time player, but he looked like he was behind and slow on pitches because his timing was off. I think given enough time, he would turn into a 100-110 wRC+ against RHP, a guy who hits 15-20 homers over a full season as a platoon partner, but that's not valuable enough as a 1B.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 05:19 PM) At what point do you say he HAD control issues. BB/9 Lucas Giolito- 2.6 Archie Bradley- 5.3 Noah Syndergaard- 2.9 Jon Gray- 3.0 Dylan Bundy- 5.4 Frank Mantas- 2.4 That's your top 5 ranked pitchers. Montas had better walk numbers than all of em. The changeup from what I've read doesn't sound like a bad offering, I guess you can say he can "figure that out" but when you have a ++ fastball and a +slider I think you can get away with an average changeup. His change up is not an MLB pitch yet, maybe a 40, and it sounds like his slider is only about a 50 that plays up because of the velocity of his fastball. Without that change up, cutter, split finger, or something to keep lefties honest, they will hit him very hard at the MLB level. You keep starting him until it seems fairly obvious that he can or cannot start, but projecting him to be a reliever is not a bad thing because he has the potential to be a dominant reliever. For reference's sake, at the tender age of 23, Andre Rienzo put up a 2.53 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 9.8 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, and a 0.2 HR/9 in 103.1 IP between A+, AA, and AAA. It was believed that he was pitching between 92-95 with sharp breaking stuff and developing offspeed pitches. How do you view him now?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 01:57 AM) p.s. I reread your post and it probably does make sense to call the cops. It's very sad the message didn't get to the cop that the one caller said it was probably a toy. That's inexcusable. This 12 year old shouldn't have been killed over this. Then the parents should have intervened and taken the toy gun from him or not allowed him to remove the orange cap. There's a chain of events and you are looking at the end result and saying "he shouldn't be dead." It's the same thing as looking at people who die from a drug overdose and saying "they shouldn't be dead." Those people shouldn't have been using so many drugs that it ended up killing them but controls and steps were not taken to remove the stimulus from the equation and that results in bad situations for the party. Immediately pointing fingers at the cops is not the right thing to do. Parents need to take control of their families and not allow them to be in that situation.

White Sox claim Onelki Garcia: Outright Jared Mitchell

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:56 PM) more than likely a GM name Hahn who is watching the waiver wire intensely. Theo/Hoyer. They claim pretty much anything and everything that has a shred of talent, but they're also currently in a roster crunch. -
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) When any of those guys turn 33 and have only 2 years left with the team I will gladly do that for you. Until then you are comparing apples to.....skyscrapers. No, we're comparing baseball players to baseball players. That is incredibly flawed logic that uses looks at correlation and assumes causation, as in, Alexei Ramirez is the reason the White Sox have not won. Frankly, that's got as much base in fact and logic as "they haven't won anything of significance since they started wearing their red pinstripe throwbacks or their 80s throwbacks." Because it's true - they haven't won s*** since wearing those uniforms - so that must be why they've been losing, right? If you had said this instead: QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) The White Sox should trade Alexei because he's When any of those guys turn 33 and has [sic] only 2 years left with the team and I do not believe they will be competitive enough to justify Alexei's cost during that time frame I will gladly do that for you. Until then you are comparing apples to.....skyscrapers. there would have been no argument from me whatsoever.

White Sox claim Onelki Garcia: Outright Jared Mitchell
witesoxfan replied to witesoxfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) I don't understand the rules. This guy was drafted in 2012 and pitched one inning in the majors. He's not waiver-protected? He was on the Dodgers 40-man roster. Because he was injured all year long, and the Dodgers wanted to free up an opening on their 40-man for a prospect (their reasons are their own), they felt they may be able to sneak Onelki Garcia through the waiver wire in able to outright him to AAA (thus, removing him from their roster but keeping him in the organization). They were unsuccessful. This has nothing to do with service time and everything to do with the Dodgers being sneaky or misjudging the market and the White Sox capitalizing and retaining the rights to a guy who has a pretty live arm. -
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:29 PM) Got ya, so that's why we've been winning so many games with Alexei....oh wait. Please try to use this argument in a serious manner in defense of trading away Adam Eaton, Chris Sale, Jose Abreu, and Jose Quintana.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Plus the value of Q's dirt cheap contract that keeps him under team control through 2018 with team options on Q for 2019/2020. Its not Q+ for Bruce, its Bruce+ for Q or like you said, hang up the phone. The value Quintana brings to the table is insane both intrinsically and extrinsically. Frankly, I was struggling whether or not I'd deal him for Giancarlo Stanton 2-3 months ago and then Stanton went and signed a $325 million deal. I'm definitely not trading Quintana for him now, not when he's going to cost $300 million more.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) Sooo what's the alternative? You let him play out his contract and watch him decline like all SS's do in their 30's and watch him walk? Honest question....is it a sentimental thing with Alexei? He's been here for a while so people don't want to see him go? Or is it that people think we are gong to compete next year? It's that he's still a good shortstop and it's not out of the realm of possibility for the White Sox to be a competitive team next year. Alexei Ramirez can be apart of that. There are also no real good alternatives behind him on the depth chart. As such, the White Sox have no internal motivation to trade Alexei Ramirez. However, because he is older, the Sox should explore the idea of trading him, and if someone matches their asking price, you really can't say no at this point. Ideally, the Sox would get some value via trade out of Alexei, but if he plays 2 more years and then leaves as a free agent, that's really not a bad thing at all.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) For what it's worth Buster Onley ranked the top 10 SS's in baseball in an insider article today. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post?id=8669 According to the article he ranked them...."Through conversations with team evaluators, general managers and our own statistical analysts" to come up with this list. The list...and I'll put a breif synopsis of why each guy is ranked where they are according to Buster 1. Simmons- Basically he's by far the best defensive SS in the game is still young and fairly cheap. 2. Peralta- He's top 5 in both OPS and defensive runs saved among SS's the past 3 years. 3. Desmond- His combo of speed and power makes him a "dynamic" player 4. Tulo- If it wasn't for injuries he would be clear cut #1 5. Hardy- GG defense and 20 HR power make him one of the best 6. Crawford- Didn't say much....just that he's consistent and saves runs on D 7. Aybar- Consistent hitter who puts the ball in play and doesn't K 8. Alexei- (copy and pasted whole excerpt) He has some value in the trade market (see below). Justin Havens of ESPN Stats & Info sent along this note about his defense and offense: “He may be slipping defensively, at least as measured by defensive runs saved -- he’s gone from +14 to +1 to -4 since 2012. Also, through the end of May, he was hitting .329 with a .479 slugging percentage; after that, he hit .243 with a .370 slugging over a span of 423 plate appearances." 9. Escobar- Likened him to Hardy...consistent all around 10. Castro- shows flashes but his D is bad and isn't consistent enough Well there it is....feel free to pick it apart. And remember to save all rude comments for Buser Olney. I'm just the messenger. Like, I get that Simmons is good and Tulowitzski is injury prone and all that. I mean, I really, really do. But if I had any of those shortstops, and you offered me Tulowitzski for them, I am snatching him up in a New York minute. Tulo is easily the best shortstop in the game right now and it's not even a question. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) I agree with him. That's why, with Semien in tow, it would be nice to trade Lexi before his value falls off the clip. Don't think Hahn doesn't know it, either. And he will. It doesn't mean he has to deal him.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) I have to image it would be quintana plus just for bruce. Bruce has 3 yrs on his contract. The Cardinals paid for 1 yr of Heyward and 2 yrs of Walden with 4 yrs of miller and 6 yrs of jenkins. Can't imagine what the red would want for bruce. Tho I can't believe the reds have latos, leake, cueto and Simon all going into free agency next yr. That's sucks to lose 4 starting pitchers all at once. Shelby Miller isn't anywhere near as good as Jose Quintana and, at their peaks, I'd say Heyward is slightly better than Bruce. Bruce is coming off the worst season of his career. Frankly, if it were up to me, and they said "we want Quintana," I'd hang up the phone.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) He's only 28. And he's not fat yet. Beane is regarded as king of Sabes. Sorry if you don't like the term, but I think the rest of my post makes sense, especially the part about the Sox needing to sign the cheaper free agents who still have upside. If Butler was 34, sure I'd agree he's worthless. I'm not crazy about Hunter as I was signing Butler, but I think Torii for one year might help and he fits into the affordable category as well. One year six million. You're right, he's not fat, he's a perfect physical specimen. Billy Beane is not regarded as the king of "Sabes," that title would belong to Bill James, if anyone. Also, Dude, sabes is not the preferred nomenclature. Sabermetrics. Signing a player for one year who is gong to cost $6-10 million who the Sox will not trade at the deadline would be among the most pointless moves they could make and is the definition of spending money just to spend money. Torii Hunter makes as much sense for the White Sox right now as Michael Jordan does in that, at one point in time, they were both outfielders. -
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:12 PM) who says he hasnt found a new biogenesis? Who says he has? I sure hope it won't be anyone on this site as we almost got into hot water during the peak of the steroid era making similar accusations.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) I've given up the PED crusade. If they get suspended they get suspended, but not all PED busts are equal. Q's at the age of 17 seems very innocent: http://www.sbnation.com/hot-corner/2013/8/...-ped-suspension No, they're not equal at all, and while I didn't check that link, I've read enough on Quintana's to know that there were other circumstances behind it. Still, I can't stand when people make blanket statements about people who use PEDs. Cabrera was as clean as we can possibly know last year and he had a good season. If he gets busted, then the Sox don't have to pay him for 100 games which will recoup something like 20% of the amount they have to pay him (assuming he gets a 3 year deal). Yeah, if he was using and he gets busted, then it's a big deal and it's a big problem, and the Sox are on the hook for 2 years, but these are risks you have to take sometimes. The Sox could just as easily sign Sandoval and find him using PEDs a year and a half into his contract, which is only a 50 game suspension, and then he could fall completely off the cliff. Hypotheticals and what ifs are a fun game to play.

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) f*** him. sox dont need a roider piece of s***. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:04 AM) I just want to say this, and it will not be the last time I say this: if people do not want the White Sox to bring in people connected with PEDs, then they may as well DFA Tyler Flowers and Jose Quintana now. But thank you for participating.

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
How do you know the White Sox didn't have interest in Billy Butler? Maybe they did but didn't want to sign a fat ("if Billy gets fat"...please, he already is), slow, right handed hitter whose power is declining and adds nothing defensively on a 3 year contract worth $10 mill a year. His value isn't that far off of Adam Dunn's except that he trades a few of those walks and home runs for singles and doubles. Billy Beane is also not a SABES GOD. He makes mistakes and bad moves and they can be criticized too. I think signing Billy Butler to a 3 year, $30 million deal is absolutely a bad move, but any and all moves can work. Torii Hunter is almost 40 and should also be a DH moving forward. He had a knack for making phenomenal plays early in his career, but he's an absolutely dreadful defensive outfielder at this point in his career. The word sabes is still ridiculous, by the way. Frankly, I can't take you seriously anymore greg.
