Arizona Fall League - 7 Sox prospects

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 01:02 AM) Olacio had an outside chance with a great AFL to put himself in running for major league job. You can forget that now. Surkamp/Snodgress and then someone from outside the organization, maybe one guaranteed deal and two waiver claims to fight it out. I don't think Olacio ever had a chance, even with a good AFL, to break camp with the Sox. They just want to see if he is far enough along and close enough to the show with a high enough ceiling to justify putting him on the 40-man roster. I ultimately think they will. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) I think the contract that Tanaka signed made Sox fans feel better about not signing him, long before his injury did. Yeah, had they signed him to my hypothesized 6/$120 with an opt out after 4, I'd still be happy even after the elbow issues. It's amazing what one more year and $35 million more will do to change your perception of the situation.

So maybe Don Mattingly isn't safe.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:42 AM) As stupid as it is, you just have to let it go sometimes. You're supposed to be impartial as a commissioner. If you're not, have a veto process where you're not the only person in charge. Two weeks ago I traded Drew Brees, AJ Green, and Josh Gordon for Nick Foles, Fred Jackson, Keenan Allen, and Jerrod McKinnon. Yeah, I got the raw end of the deal, but my team was 1-4 and in the current state of my team, I was going to get no value for Josh Gordon. I was roasted by my league members but the commish put it through as the only reason we veto trades is obvious collusion, not because someone is getting the raw end of the deal. Turns out that I've actually gotten the very best of that trade thus far as Green hasn't played those weeks so I've at least been able to get production from someone else, plus I had Sanu on my bench. Jackson's out but now McKinnon is the starter in Minnesota. Funny how that stuff works out sometimes. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) Maybe he didn't ruin baseball for other team's fans but as a Sox fan after 2011, I never felt confident this team would do anything with him on it. Never hits with guys in scoring position. I didn't care if he hit 40 homers the year before, when guys were on base it was almost certain they wouldn't score with him hitting. This can be said of virtually every player because even the best hit .350 with RISP which would mean 65% of the time, guys were not scoring. Dunn was a problem at times, but throughout his tenure with the Sox, there were always bigger fish to fry. (OK, he was the biggest problem in 2011, but there were like a million problems with that team, so his s***ty season didn't kill the Sox, everyone's s***ty season killed the Sox)

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) I always thought that to be the case, however several other articles about him has given the little snippet. he wants to be posted and not wait for the normal yrs or waiting. His current team, whoever it is, will not want to post him. They're only going to get $20 million in posting fees, so they're going to maximize their service time with him and if he's adament about playing in the MLB, they will then post him to try and get something monetarily for him.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:37 AM) re: Heyward, you know, this might be a good trade. not only will he be good in the lineup, but if necessary can leadoff if Eaton gets hurt. The problem I have is the cost of the trade and it appears as he will go the free route. second, as I mention in the previous sentence ATL is a very smart, and a difficult trading partner. yeah the sox have a good beginning of a nice minor league prospects, but would you be willing to let Anderson go in the trade? Anderson is untouchable for all but the most premier of players with service control available. Heyward does not have that on his side. I like Heyward and would give up a lot for the Sox to get him, but if they ask for Anderson, the answer is a quick, flat no.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:19 AM) I'm not vetoing it because I'm bitter, I'm saying that's what HE would say. I'm considering vetoing it because it's an awful f***ing trade. Part of being a comissioner is also not allowing wildly unfair trades to occur. This isn't the first trade he's pulled off since we tried trading. He made that TY Hilton move that a couple weeks ago that I didn't veto because that was at least in the realm of realism. I explained how this one is in the realm of realism too. You have to allow it. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) That author does a real good job in explaining that no, they didn't reinvent a new shift and their model is unsustainable for the most part. I don't think that was his point though. You said this much more succinctly than I was able.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 01:01 AM) "It would still be nice?" This is why I can't even bother to post anymore. I'm sorry that I think it would be nice to see a White Sox player win an award. Jesus.

QUOTE (almagest @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 10:15 PM) Anyone still playing Destiny on PS4? Got a 28 Hunter and a 26 Titan. Gamertag is al_magest. Yes, I have a 20 Warlock, have just finally been getting involved in crucible matches. I've never been good at FPS multi-player, but in just 2 days of playing it with any sort of regularity, I've gone from totally useless to barely competent, which seems like a vast improvement. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 08:30 AM) May not make a bad #2 hitter, but definitely not giving up a Top 10 prospect for him. He's one of the best defensive outfielders in all of baseball and is a fine hitter with potential to turn into a very good hitter. I'd easily give up a top 10 prospect for him and probably 2 with another piece thrown in on the pretense that you can sign him to a contract extension.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 08:20 AM) Are we all talking about the Jason Heyward who slugged .384 last year, or is there some other Jason Heyward I'm not aware of who is actually worth giving up prospects for? There is power potential in his bat though, he hits for average, draws walk, steals bases, runs the bases well, and is a phenomenal defender. Singling out one statistic that appears to be an outlier as the reason to not acquire someone is a pretty weak argument.

It makes no sense for Ohtani to be available to MLB teams for something like 4-5 years. Let's cross that bridge when we get there.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 12:19 AM) As the Sox know all too well. It has worked splendidly. 73 win teams don't trade prospects, much less top prospects, for a rent (esp for a rent of a player coming off of a mediocre season like Heyward). 90 win teams do it sparingly and usually in July. WE have payroll? Sign free agents. Or get some long term deals set for the good players we have. I see a lot of sentiment to trading Montas and/or Danish.... When 60% of the Sox rotation is Carroll, Danks and Noesi and when the bullpen was bottom 5. Teams like St Louis and San Francisco develop their own players for the most part. You can't force things. You need a foundation...and it's getting there. Heyward is not acquired with the idea of him being a rental. He's acquired with the idea that he's a key piece of that foundation you mention moving forward. Also, I think if you signed Heyward to a 6 year deal, he'd be OK with that because it'd allow him another opportunity at one last large payday, plus you could create an opt out after 4 years too if he felt he could make more at age 30. Free agents are less than ideal because you have to pay beyond a premium for players who are typically on the wrong side of the age curve. Moving forward, you assume that Rodon is apart of that rotation as well. I also see them signing a free agent this year as well. San Francisco has also acquired a ton of their talent as well. There is plenty of reasons to trade prospects for a 26 year old coming off a 5 WAR season who seemingly could improve his game even further. Heyward does make a lot of sense for the White Sox if he's available and if they can sign him to an extension. I feel as though that if they did acquire him, they'd feel quite confident in their ability to sign him long-term.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 01:46 AM) I'm the commissioner of my league. Check out this awful trade that someone is trying to pass..... Russel Wilson for Michael Crabtree Bishop Sankey Wilson is ranked 5th in QB, Crabtree is ranked 33rd, and Sankey is 47th. AND Crabtree isn't even playing this week and he is texting me asking to put the trade through right away. I'm so sick of this dude. He is the same guy who I've been trying to trade Romo and Terrance Williams to, whom he said he is interested in, but then all he does is talk s*** about them through text. I offered Romo and Williams for LeSean McCoy. He replies "Yeah right man, Romo could get injured at any moment and suck again, and Williams is a bum." I didn't bite on his awful offers of Sankey and Brandin Cooks, so now he is going to try to rob this other guy of his QB because he doesn't want to go in to a 2nd straight week starting Carson Palmer. So do I just straight up veto the trade and probably get b****ed at by him for being bitter about our trade not working out, or do I try to convince the other guy that I can offer him a better combo and get him to cancel the deal, not stopping it if he chooses to let it go through? EDIT: Or 3rd option I guess is to completely ignore it and let it happen. You let the trade happen. The only time you should ever veto a trade is if people are colluding. This is obviously not the same situation. The guy trading Russell is probably trying to sell high on him (because he doesn't believe he's the 5th rated QB) and is trying to buy low on Crabtree and Sankey (presumably because he feels that Crabtree is a legit WR2 and he'll turn it on in the second half of the year while Sankey is going to start getting the bulk of carries for a Tennessee team that is in rebuilding/evaluation mode). -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 04:50 PM) That's a ton to give up for a guy that only has 1 year left, and is probably going to ask for 8 yrs/$160M or so. He will be a FA at age 26. That's the thing though - he is 26 and is an All-Star caliber player who could easily improve into one of the most valuable players in the league. He could also continue putting up Markakis-esque numbers, but as long as it comes with elite defense, he's still incredibly valuable. If the Braves to make him available, there are going to be a lot of suitors. Sometimes you have to overpay to get the guy you want.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) Heyward is a guy that could get me talking about anyone outside of Anderson, Rodon and Adams. I'd offer up a package with Danish/Montas, Johnson/Hawkins, Semien/Sanchez and Ravelo/Davidson for Heyward. The only guys I'm leery of dealing on that list are Montas and Semien, and that's just because I really like those guys.

QUOTE (shakes @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 04:11 PM) Almost all driven by defense. I personally do not think a corner outfielder can derive that much value from defense. With the bat he was essentially Adam Eaton. Given the value of what you would have to give up and pay in an extension, I don't see it being a possibility, nor do I think it would be worth it. I don't know, it mentions his range as the biggest factor and if you've ever seen Heyward in the outfield - through highlights, other video, or in person - that range is legitimately game changing. He has great instincts, runs good routes to balls, and has good speed. His arm isn't anything to scoff at either. I don't think that's really an overestimate, especially when the guy has been a plus-plus fielder for 3 years in a row. Heyward has really cut his strikeouts too, and he's only going to be 26 next season. I'd give up a small ransom if the Sox traded him. Bring in another outfielder with good range and then play Avisail sparingly out there and the outfield defense is improved an incredible amount.

I just want to know where TUC is for this post. I'm sure he'd be in full agreement with everything in this thread (except the good things).

FanGraphs' numbers say this should be JJ Hardy. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=&players=0 It would still be nice to see Alexei win it. He was deserving of the award a couple other times earlier in his career.

I'd have no problem with either player, but Atlanta would be asking for a lot in return. Given where the White Sox are at, is that the best allocation of resources?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) I could care less if he gains or loses weight. If he's put on a little weight and pitched this well, I see no reason to push hard for weight loss. No one is asking him to pinch run. You don't want to see him get super fat, but I don't think big pitchers are necessarily a good or bad thing. I don't have any numbers to back it, but it doesn't seem as though, long term, there's an discernable difference between skinny, normal, and fat pitchers. I'm sure someone will bring up Bobby Jenks eventually, which is a case for pitchers not being too fat - by the end of his career, he was 6'4'', 300+ easily. He looked like a lineman.
