  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 01:31 AM) On one day's rest? Is that possible? I meant game 7. Peavy is going tonight, Hudson tomorrow if it's necessary.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 01:32 AM) Back to the topic. Shields is going to be grossly overpaid next season if you folks are correct. His resume is now screaming, "Don't sign me. I'm aging and faltering." This is something we've been saying all season greg.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) Chris De Luca ‏@ChrisDeLuca 41m41 minutes ago Ozzie Guillen would love to coach for Joe Maddon — with #Cubs http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cu...ml#.VE6ufovF_88 … :heylookatme
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) No league should have a veto process because people use the veto as a weapon and not how it is supposed to be used This is why I'm glad we don't have vetoes in my league. We used to, but now it's just commissioner approval (or co-commish approval). If it's obvious collusion, the trade is turned down, but otherwise it goes through, even in cases where it seems one side is heavily favored. As I mentioned previously, I traded Brees, Green, and Gordon for Foles, Fred Jackson, Keenan Allen, and Jerick McKinnon. If we had a league veto in place, that would have gotten shot down at the time - Green was beasting, Keenan Allen was rather pedestrian, and Fred Jackson probably just barely made up the difference between those two, but I needed value out of Gordon to have a chance. Meanwhile, McKinnon was playing second fiddle to Asiata. Two hours after the trade was approved and put through, Green went out with a toe and hasn't played since. Had I not made that trade, I wouldn't have won this past week.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 02:45 PM) Another thing about Dunn that I've thought about in regards to his decision to retire: Do you think he was afraid of being the only player with 500 homers to NOT be in the Hall of Fame? If I were him, I might rather just ride off into the sunset than to have my career murdered by media pundits in five years. He would definitely not be the only non-HOFer with 500 homers as I don't think there's a chance in hell Palmeiro gets elected. I think there will be a few others from that era who get overlooked as well and I could even see Sosa not being inducted with 600+ homers. He was also likely a season and a half away from setting the all-time K record too - he retired 218 short of Reggie Jackson. I think more of it is that he stopped having fun. He likely got a nice little boost gonig to Oakland, but he had what amounted to 3 years and 5 months of constantly being booed by the Chicago faithful every time he went to the plate. That can wear on a guy. I just don't think he wanted to play as much as he used to.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) You can make a case for every statistic being a flawed statistic. I agree, and I don't think it'd be that hard to do so. At times, you just have to find the least flawed statistics and use more than one of them to prove a point.
  7. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 01:49 PM) I get what you're trying to say, but I don't agree with it. A right-handed Yankee getting the same park adjustment as a left-handed Yankee is getting f***ed right up the ass. I follow your logic and understand what you're saying. I was thinking they did have the breakdown somewhere of park factors for both RH's and LH's. If it's not included, I agree they should do more to neutralize for that as well. Maybe it's something one of us can ask to the brains over at FGs to see if they incorporate that into their statistic or not. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) I agree that OPS is flawed because OBP is a bit more valuable than SLG, but I also think that is context dependent on how you are trying to fit a guy in with the rest of the team. If you already have a team with decent OBP but lacking pop, you might favor SLG even though OBP is generally move valuable. Right, but that really doesn't have much to do with OPS itself, just general roster construction and a way of favoring what type of player you're looking for based on that criteria. I'm not saying OPS is wrong, just that it's something I try to not to reference on a regular basis because it is a flawed statistic.
  8. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 01:05 PM) Cancel the rant. Actually the Top 10 MLB players in WRC are the same top 10 in OPS. Guys like Eaton, DV, amd Conor all fall into the same range in both categories. I am sure there are some odd instances both ways but quick look tells you both stats are very similiar. But what does an OPS of .735 tell you? To me, a .735 OPS only tells me that his slugging and on base percentage added up to .735. 10 years ago, a .735 OPS would have been below average. In today's environment, a .735 OPS CAN be fairly good. OPS is also a more severely flawed statistic. It's oft-used, but if a team had an OBP of 1.000, the game would never end because they'd never stop getting on base. The same cannot be said for a 1.000 SLG, unless they were all singles, in which case their OBP would also be 1.000, thus verifying the results. Through simple deduction we reason that OBP is more important than SLG.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo 3m3 minutes ago MRI confirms Bears DE Lamarr Houston tore his ACL yesterday. Unfortunate injury for sure. lol what an idiot
  10. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) That makes a lot of sense. Do the Rays/Expos stay in the AL or do we get some sort of realignment that gets them back in the NL? Think they'd have to stay in the AL at that point. MLB has had no problem with moving teams across leagues (in the past 15 years, we've seen both Milwaukee and Houston switch spots).
  11. I won yesterday despite playing Michael Floyd (0 pts) over Chris Ivory (16 pts). In fact, I would say I damn near rolled, 134-108. Feels good man.
  12. QUOTE (Tmar @ Oct 25, 2014 -> 12:54 AM) Wowowow only 20, you seeing this Carl? He's probably still better than Jose Up to 22 now suckkkkkkiittttt
  13. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) I'm with you here -- Cespedes is a complementary piece that expects to be paid like a core piece. You can get that production much, much cheaper. I know a guy who's an A's fan who blames their entire second half collapse on the A's trading Cespedes. I always try and convince him that it had more to do with injuries and regression than anything else, but he insists that losing Cespedes had that big of an effect on them.
  14. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 26, 2014 -> 11:26 PM) Giants need to win Game 6. I really think if it goes 7, the Royals take it. I don't necessarily think that. Bumgarner will be sitting down the bullpen if Hudson gets rattled at all in game 6. And, if he does, you take him out after 2 or 3 or whatever and Bumgarner pitches 3-4 innings for you.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) I'm still trying to figure out if teams actually believe these defense-dominated WAR numbers for corner OFs, but with Alex Gordon leading the Royals to the series this year I feel like some of them will start, and if that happens someone will go pretty close to that level, maybe beyond it, for a 27 year old Heyward. Hell, it's not hard to convince yourself he can still be a lot better with the bat during that deal as well. I don't think the $20 million is outrageous at all. I think it's just 8 years. Personally, I'd have no problem with the Sox, given a trade for him, signing him to a 6 year $120 million extension. It's those last two years that have me concerned.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 04:50 PM) @Buster_ESPN: Rival executives believe that if Joe Maddon winds up with the Cubs, the Rays will investigate the issue of tampering. What happens then? Tampering is ridiculously hard to prove anyways, but are they just going to take away a draft pick and give it to Tampa or force Chicago to give them a player or what? Hopefully it's the latter and hopefully it's Kris Bryant.
  17. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) if they are willing to send these 3 prospects, why not offer it to someone else. I think you are really underrating Jason Heyward. He's a good all around player who has the ability and talent to be a great all around player, like possibly a guy who gets a few MVP votes from time to time.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) They'd be able to get a better offer than that if Hayward was willing to immediately sign his 8/$160 extension or something like that. I just don't know that I see Heyward getting an 8 year deal. I don't think it's impossible, I just think that teams would want to see him improve his hitting as defense is a skill that has a strong correlation of deteriorating with the loss of athleticism.
  19. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) We are talking about 3 guys, 2 of which may never make any contributions in the ML. If Heyward is indeed traded, the offer might actually be better than that. Yeah, Sanchez actually seems like a legitimate piece the Braves could/would have interest in, but they're gonna need a legitimate A or B level prospect to consider tradnig Heyward to the Sox. Danish, Hawkins, and Sanchez is about as low as I could see them going. I have no problem with that, but I think the Braves would also get a better offer than that.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) Another shooting at a school today, a high school in Washington. Some dead. Get mad. Get a gun. Go kill as many people as you can before you get killed or shoot yourself. Happening way too often, folks. OK greg, it's time for you to relax and come off that ledge.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Which is why we need to stop talking all a bout this mighty wRC and factor in defense. A metric the Sox absolutely suck in. Now in your defense you are presumably talking about Morse as an option for DH, which is fine, but he isn't left handed and well quite frankly, he sucks defensively. When it comes to position players we need to be finding some guys who can catch the ball and hit (at least one of them) and then we can focus on potential platoon options at DH but it would be nice if they were capable positional players as well. I must have missed this thread a while back. Anyways, I was just stating that Morse had pretty much a standard year this year. There's no way I'd want him in the outfield. He's absolutely terrible defensively and I am in 100% agreement with you that the Sox need to upgrade their defense.
  22. I feel confident in saying there is a 0% chance this is happening. Like, not even the slightest possibility. There are probably 20 other message boards like this one who are saying the same thing.
  23. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) My wife has Sanders, Manning, Allen and Gates on her team. So from last night alone she got 9 touchdowns. Not to mention all the yards. So she wins.
  24. If I read it right, Friedman leaving the organization triggered this out-clause that Maddon exercised. If I'm understanding that right, it means that if Friedman stayed in Tampa, Maddon's contract had no out-clause. Yeah, if this ISN'T Los Angeles, it's an upset.
  25. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) Only thing I think that may have come close was the 10 inning playoff game in 1983. The 2005 playoffs were cool but there was no elimination game. The worst part of the 2008 playoffs was Javier Vazquez. Javy was my boy when he was here, but he was Captain Buzzkill down the stretch in 2008.
