QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 03:34 PM) Interesting. So the bottom line is DeAza is a better option than anybody we've been discussing. No, not necessarily, because De Aza is a guy who seemingly plays and performs below his talent level. I believe that you can make a legitimate, straight-faced argument that Alejandro De Aza was the most talented outfielder on the White Sox major league roster last year - he's got a fairly quick bat, he hits line drives all over, he can hit the ball out of the park, and he is both quick and fast. I won't necessarily make the argument, but someone could. However, he does a lot of bad baseball kind of things - makes base running mistakes, fails to properly read balls, takes bad routes to balls, makes bad throws, swings too hard, doesn't work counts, takes bad swings, doesn't read pitches well out of pitchers' hands, plus any other number of things. Plus, he's starting to get old. I would have had no problem with De Aza returning, but there's not much of a future for him in baseball...maybe 1-3 years as a starter left, 3-6 years as a 4th outfielder? Something like that. Not someone you can count on for longevity or to be here for a while. It made sense to get what they could for him this year.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) This isn't one of Cameron's better efforts, IMO. Agreed. Volquez back to San Diego was especially laughable. He was absolutely brutal there and they released him because he was so bad. It's rare you see someone get RELEASED by an organization and then signed to a contract by the same team within a year and a half after, let alone a lucrative, multi-year deal.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 01:35 PM) FSU redshirt sophomore QB Jameis Winston's student conduct code hearing has been postponed, according to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times. ESPN's Mark Schlabach added Winston's attorney was the one who requested a delay. It was recently reported that Winston's hearing would take place during the week of Nov. 17, but his attorney appears to need more time. Source: Matt Baker on Twitter and this http://www.tmz.com/2014/11/07/jameis-winst...lle-chris-rabb/ This will be pushed back past playoffs then he leaves school and it does not matter. If he drops out of school, is he allowed to attend the FSU Pro Day or does he have to attend someone else's? I really hope it's denied due to him being a flight threat. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) This is off topic a little bit, but i'm appalled at DeAza's improvement once he got to a team with a good manager. WTF. I mean if DeAza was going to do that we could have kept him another five years. Something has to give with our team, folks. Something may be amiss. Anyhow, Saunders for Viciedo might be a decent flip flop; we shall see. Here was what Alejandro De Aza did in June of 2014. I do not recall which team he was playing for at the time or who his manager was, but I believe it was the Chicago White Sox and Robin Ventura. .365/.423/.540/.962, 71 plate appearances Here is what he did with the Baltimore Orioles. .293/.341/.537/.878, 89 plate appearances

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) I think he'd be asking for 4 yrs/$70M, and I don't think I'd do that. I'd much prefer something like 4 yrs/$56M. I'd have no problem giving Jeff Samardzija $17.5 mill per year over 5 years. I think the problem is that he's going to get closer to $20 mill per year and he's going to ask for 6 years. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) Have you looked at Saunders' stats? It hardly would be a coup. It'd be two change of scenery guys like somebody stated on here. Saunders gets hurt a lot and that article made it sound like he's lazy. Another fourth outfielder type. Michael Saunders is a guy who is not a terrible hitter. He is an average to above average defender. Those are two things that Dayan Viciedo is not, and they comprise most of the things baseball players do. It'd be a damn coup.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) LaRussa hated Rasmus. The Sox could have had Rasmus when they trade EJax but didn't want him when he was cheaper and more highly thought of as a prospect. I have a hard time believing JR signs off on Rasmus, especially for 3 years. This guy has a lot of issues. I think these are the telling signs. I'd personally have no problem gambling on Rasmus' talent on a one year deal, but there's no way I'd go 3 years and I doubt the Sox are even going to show interest.

Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) The problem is; there are no "VMart-type' signings in next years free agent class. Not if, by "VMart-type", you mean extraordinary, professional, big run producing hitters, who strike out very seldom. Nobody strikes out as little as Martinez does, so yeah, you're right on that. Just because guys don't strike out doesn't automatically make them good hitters though. However, as long as we can take out the phrase "strike out very seldom" (because a 15-20% strikeout rate is the average for a MLB hitter at this point), and while this list will change in the next 12 months, there are plenty of players who qualify as "extraordinary, professional, big run producing hitters." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/09/2016...ree-agents.html -
Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa

Even being well aware that part of the reason the organization soured on him was due to his mechanics, I'd absolutely love it if they were able to bring Brandon McCarthy back into the organization. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) Exactly. The NBA is a lot bigger than the Spurs. There should be no special treatment of them regarding scheduling. It's an entertainment business. The Spurs screwed the NBA out of one of the premier early season match ups that was also on the road on national TV. If Pops was so concerned, he should have sat them at home against the Hawks the night before. Isn't it more appropriate for home town fans to see their home town stars? I think Balta has the perfect response to this still. If they want those premier matchups, then they shouldn't have the premier matchup be the 2nd of a back to back.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) I would definitely trade for Jeff Samardzija, pending on an extension only. So we would need a negotiating window and if a deal cannot get done then no deal. I would trade Micah Johnson, Hawkins, Beck and a fodder for Samardzija If Oakland is agreeing to a 72 hour extension window, Samardzija is going to cost you Tim Anderson (plus more). The idea is that you can get him as a rental and either agree to an extension later in the year or get a first or second round pick for him after he leaves. -

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 11:02 AM) So are most of the other pitchers who are free agents this year are 30 plus. Not going to get to many good pitchers now of days hitting the market in their 20s. If you want a good pitcher in their 20s then you are going to give up a ton of prospects to get him. I just don't think people realize how old he is. Samardzija is a good pitcher, but I don't think he's the right gamble for the Sox to make [unless the price is right*]. There are plenty of free agents that they can sign for reasonable deals that are short-term, do not cost players, and are not going to be significant costs long-term. Let someone who is closer and willing to make a long-term committment to Samardzija trade for him. That team should not be the White Sox. *-I could put this on every post for any player, but I'm just going to stop. The gambles are always right if you get the right price, but so many times, the opportunity cost is too great for the Sox compared to other teams and it just won't happen. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) There will be other teams who are willing to offer way more. That's perfectly fine. There's no need for the Sox to acquire Samardzija. I'm not sure people realize he's already going to be 30 next season. -
It's really fun reading some of the names on this list. It always is.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) Seeing their trade of Russell, the price probably starts with Anderson. The difference is that they also got Hammel and they traded for a year and a half of control for Samardzija. I'd play hardball and offer Cleuluis Rondon as the SS prospect they get in return. There's no need to break the bank on Samardzija. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 10:22 AM) They're a team thin on infield prospects right? Anyone think they'd take Danks and Sanchez in a deal? To be clear, not for Samardzija but in a deal potentially for someone else? Just curious because they did pay both Cespedes and Johnson about $20 mill combined last season and Danks in under control for two more years and can probably pitch well in that ballpark. I think the A's are among the least likeliest teams to show any interest in John Danks unless it involved the Sox eating his contract. -
Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) you are correct, the sox did have more money on the table and was very interested in him. I can't remember why he liked det better or why he didn't want the sox. If the White Sox made an offer, it was 4 years, $48 mill. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/tige...r-martinez.html We also have this post on our site indicating that the White Sox never made an offer to Victor Martinez - http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=2288912 QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) This is awful reporting. The Sox have offers out to bats on the free agent market, but certainly not Victor Martinez. If there was an offer of this size out to a slugger, which I have no idea of offer size, I can say with almost 100% certainty its not VMART. I hate how one "source" names us and then 100 more run with it like its fact. I wish someone would fact check one of these days. So the two options we have are: 1) The Sox made an offer less than that of the offer Detroit made 2) The Sox did not make an offer It's very easy to see why Martinez signed with Detroit. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) "NorthSide", you posted the answer to my question, just as I was posting it, precisely at the same moment. What would be the harm in letting him get some playing time, out there, in Spring Training. I pretty sure that he is not ready to play second base on a contender (as Hahn suggests that he expects the Sox to be). The harm could be that throwing long distances reaggrivates injuries and his arm could go to s*** rather quickly, which doesn't help anything. If the Sox are happy with his defense at 2B, I think you try and keep him there as long as possible. It's also possible that they are hyping him up and view him as a trade chip too, so who knows exactly.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 07:59 AM) Anyone remember when VMart signed with Detroit ? I was reading that back then the Sox offered him more money than the Tigers along the lines of 3/$48M but he chose the Tigers for more years less AAV and that Adam Dunn was actually our fall back signing. Hasn't Hahn hinted that the Sox could be going after someone we have pursued in the past ? Pretty sure the Sox had interest, but Martinez signed so early in the offseason that it surprised the Sox and they never actually contacted him. They were going to make him a similar or better offer than the one they made to Dunn. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 08:35 AM) Have you seen Wilmer Flores play SS? It's actually kind of sad. He looks kind of like Hunter Pence, like he's out of some early N64 baseball game with blocky, polygon graphics. The mildest way to put it is probably that he makes routine plays look very difficult, and difficult plays look like miracles. He came up this year for a bit and surprisingly kind of held his own. And everyone was impressed, but in the way you're impressed with something that you assumed was total garbage when it turns out to be anything more than that. I think most of Mets fans, at least, are kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop on his SS defense. Like, it's cool that he's been able to defy the odds, but you can't expect to keep making these plays when your feet and arms move the way his feet and arms do. EDIT: Here's a PERFECT example: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wilmer-flor...-shortstop-yet/ Notice his footwork in the third GIF down. I dare you to watch that and not laugh. Whereas Flores appears to be overly dependent upon his arm for his arm strength (as in, he's throwing primarily with his arm and not using his legs to generate strength, velocity, and accuracy on his throws), Semien appeared to be rushing his footwork - his feet were quick, but his arm was lagging behind, and as a result his backfoot would often rush up too soon, leading to his throws sailing a bit. I still think Semien's role on the club next year will be as a supersub and he'll get a significant amount of playing time to see whether he can stick at the MLB level. I think he will. -

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) Wasn't pretty at 3B. He made some wild throws due to poor footwork. His hands and range looked good, if not really good. He'd be an acceptable SS, but I don't think you want him there. He's not Michael Young, but I doubt he'd be anything more than average. -

To go back to my manufactured Rick Hahn quote, you don't want to say anybody's untouchable or they aren't going to be traded, but even if those teams have interest in Ramirez, I do not think he will be traded. If I were Rick Hahn, I'd be more willing to move him, but I'm not and I'm not going to question his motives. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) It wasn't reported so you don't know that. Yeah well I have sources. I can't tell you who they are, but rest assured that those teams, plus quite a few others, are interested in both Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. The White Sox are listening but aren't sure the teams will give enough. Rick Hahn said something like "You don't ever want to say anybody's untouchable, because there's a price for everything, but I'm just not sure any one is going to be able to pay that price for either of our best two starting pitchers." -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) Josh Hamilton is 2 years younger than Victor Martinez using a calendar and who knows what in reality. Why would anyone want his contract on the books for 4 years, no matter what the cost? He lost 30 pounds as soon as he signed with the Angels and has sucked ever since. Why would he get better? It would be an absolutely bad situation. I primarily brought it up just to say that the Sox would need a ton covered before they actually would consider acquiring Hamilton.
