  1. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) They still haven't given up a rushing TD. Their receivers also don't get a ton of chances since Alex Smith throws the ball like 15 times a game. Of those 15, 6 go to Kelce, 4 go to Charles, and 2 go to Davis.
  2. Shingo was awful in 2005. Also, the idea that steady is used to describe Damaso Marte in 2005 is funny. He was wild and inconsistent and it seems his ERA was as good as it was because guys like Politte and Cotts would come on and strand the runners he put on. It's hard to forget about the ALDS where he walked the bases loaded and El Duque came on and worked out of it. It's not impossible to turn a bullpen around, but using the 2005 White Sox as a reason to spend a lot of money on the bullpen is reverse logic - the 2005 White Sox bullpen proves that bullpens can pull flukes out of their rears in any given year, because the bullpens were bad in both 2004 and 2006 with pretty much the same pitchers in the bullpen.
  3. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) Not saying that EXACT deal but as a starting point. Probably need another good prospect in there. I think they'd need at least one more prospect and perhaps 2. Not sure a guy who struck out 40% of the time at the MLB level, a 1B in A ball, and a fill-in non-tender candidate is enough to prop up one good pitching prospect.
  4. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) I'm actually thinking Cubs make a move for Hamels. Baez, Vogelbach, Edwards, Wood (to replace Hamels' depth lost) maybe? I don't see any way Philly would make that deal.
  5. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 04:03 PM) Oh yea, another Teahan deal. REally cheap, fine. When is the last time the Sox got a player like that really cheap. Sox will pay his 2013 price - top dollar, if they get him. Astros aren't going to let him go really cheap anyway. I'm just sick of these 140K guys anyway; you guys want more of that action, fine. If there isn't a discount with the Astros having 3 catchers and Castro coming off a bad season, someone else can pay the piper. The Sox aren't going to pay for his 2013 production this offseason. This is a guy people were talking about trading Quintana for last year. That's not going to happen. If the Sox can get him as a discount, then you can take a shot. If not, you don't bother. Also, if you are suggesting K's are bad and you do not want them, I'm assuming that also means you would not take Mike Trout. Guys strike out. It happens.
  6. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) Sure, but not when you have no #3, or 4 starter; not when you have no DH or LF. And not when you still have a thin farm system. It doesn't address priorities. He's also under control for only 2 more years; he was also terrible offensively last year (OPS of .651) and in his good year, he Ks a ton. We don't know how good he is at calling a game. This would be bad move. Depending on the price, this could be an absolute steal. There's nothing wrong whatsoever with inquiring. And just because a player strikes out does not mean he should not be brought in. Guys strike out a lot these days. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) With him being pretty close to FA and off a down season, I'm not opposed, but the trick is that the price shouldn't be that high - someone with talent but who the org doesn't like and wants to move out of the way for whatever reason. Right, plus if you bring him in, you may be able to sign him to an extension. That would not be a bad thing.
  7. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) No. Not a priority. Sox need hitters in the lineup. Marginal upgrades from terrible to possibly just bad are not a good use of resources. Except that Jason Castro is a potential all-star at his peak. Plus having two very capable catchers is not a bad thing.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) I don't get all this talk about how angry Bears fans are right now. It sucks, but this team is well into comically dysfunctional fun-bad territory now, just enjoy the ride. It really would be funny if they gave up 50 to Minnesota.
  9. Relevant: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-top-fiv...-projected-war/ With Rangel "Gordita Crunchela" Ravelo as the #1 prospect due to still being considered a 1B/3B prospect, though he's obviously not going to play 3B.
  10. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Lol, I'm glad we let this run to its proper conclusion. If Ravelo ever makes it, I believe his official SoxTalk nickname should be "Gordita Crunchella." I love that you are posting this everywhere, it really is the best nickname I've ever come up with.
  11. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) Moving 250 miles north means about 20 degrees colder. So what, it's 50 degrees?
  12. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) As in Wite's statement that Thompson has far better tools than Engel, which I called "couldn't be more inaccurate". As I said, they have similar tools. One thing we are not looking at here is Engel has a stronger chance of staying in center, while Thompson has been long projected as a corner outfielder as his body matures. I think the fact that his defense has improved over the last couple of years in center has quiet down that notion, but I still believe Engel has better tools as a defender, and could offer more value in the future as a center fielder. I guess maybe I'm just bigger on Thompson than I realized. He's going to be playing in AAA next year and has big time power, whereas Engel hasn't even really had a ton of success at A- ball. Maybe some of the tools are there, but I just don't see it yet.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 11:53 AM) It reminded me of Kirby Pucketts career ending fastball to the face. Scary stuff The thing is, the glaucoma in Puckett didn't develop until months after the injury. He played in the Spring of '96 (and well) but developed a spot in his right eye towards the end. It turned into glaucoma.
  14. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 11:40 AM) Bills haven't scored a TD in 7 quarters. Hackett blows
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) Spring Training Schedule- opener March 4. Pitchers and Catchers probably report around Feb. 20. https://www.facebook.com/notes/chicago-whit...141111_35401917 There are fewer than 110 days until the Spring Training opener. yay
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) According to the long term forecast it might not get above freezing at all for a week +. Oh please. -12 when I woke up this morning.
  17. QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Am I the only one that thinks it ridiculous that he was only 4th? I am not a fan of this award going to the best performer from a contending team, with previous history taken into account. In my mind it should be given to the most valuable player. While the White Sox stunk Abreu was I believe more valuable to his team than Mike Trout. If Kluber can win the Cy Young after one charmed year on a non-playoff team, why can't Abreu win the MVP? I believe so, yes. He won a Silver Slugger and the Rookie of the Year award but had a worse statistic year than Martinez, who I believe had convincingly better numbers, and I'd say that both Trout and Brantley had better numbers (worse as a hitter, better overall as offensive players), and those two both play more physically demanding defensive positions and play them fairly well. Frankly, I think the writers nailed the awards this year.
  18. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 07:44 PM) Very informative article, but he's definitely conservative on his tool grades and future projections. Many reports call Rodon's slider an 70/80 pitch ever since he started pitching as a pro. McDaniel has it as a 65/70 pitch. Same with Micah's base running, when healthy, he's closer to 80 runner than the 65 suggested. And I think if Danish, Adams, or Montas makes the majors, they will be better than #4 starters. The fact that he ranked Thompson so high and yet also trashes Engel for his hit tool also suggests flawed logic here. They are essentially the same player with the same tools and same flaws. Again, some of the grades could be for when he watched those guys play, and having conservative grades on things is not a bad thing. Dewon Day supposedly had an 80 slider but we obviously never saw that and he didn't do anything in the majors. Had they called it a 50 or a 60 with flashes of 80, nobody would have thought differently. He mentions that those pitches can be great, but they are usually not. That's just fine. Also, Thompson has put up far better numbers than Engel and has far better tools. It's really not even close. Also, Thompson has spent 5 years in the White Sox minor league system compared to the 2 for Engel and Thompson is still just 9 months older than Engel. Thompson has proven he struggles with contact, but he's still also going to be 24 and likely heading to Charlotte, whereas Engel will be 23 and heading to high A, where Thompson was playing - 3 years ago. I am not even a big Thompson fan, but saying that Thompson and Engel are comparable prospects is crazy.
  19. QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 09:25 PM) I'd much rather have Niese over Greene. Niese is just 2 years older. And he is less talented and is going to cost more to get based on his "proven" moniker.
  20. QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 07:53 AM) i have been looking through the threads to see if the old reliables Bucket and/or Rock have posted any tips as to possible moves we may be looking into but have not found anything. have they dropped in for any hints the last week or so?? Yes, they said the Sox are interested in acquiring good players.
  21. It's not a bad thing to be involved or interested in these players and end up not signing them because they end up getting an absurd amount of money elsehwere. The Sox offered 5/$75 to Hunter and LAA offerd $90 mill. The Sox had what appeared to be the top offer on the table for Miguel Cabrera, but the Tigers willingness to take on Dontrelle Willis helped them seal that deal. These things happen and suggesting that the Sox have missed out on them because other teams are willing to risk more is OK. Having no sources whatsoever, I've predicted that the Sox would be involved in both Victor and Miller and that they'll ultimately back out because the price will be too expensive. I also think they'll look into the Dodgers outfield situation and discuss moving Alexei, though I ultimately do not believe he will be moved. You identify holes and realize that the Sox are also in a more conservative mode right now where they won't break the bank on players they do not believe will be impact players for them 2-3 years down the road.
  22. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) This is true but that's because there's no over seeing body of the pc games market. Microsoft and Sony are supposed to provide for some quality control to allow publishing on their system but they have obviously have completely abandoned that even in their own freaking 1st party games. It's sad. At some point, you do need to the get the game out there because you can end up wasting a lot of time working on bugs that are virtually non-existent. Get the product out there, find the bugs, fix them, and patch it. That's the beautiful thing about live updates in games now a days. The problem is that, as you've said, they just throw a seemingly unfinished product out there and then wait for the bugs to appear. That's not how it should be. Also, I didn't get on Destiny right away, but that hasn't had too many bugs that I've noticed.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) I am sure he has veto power, as does Jerry and the board. I think the difference is that Rick Hahn is doing most of the day to day work of shaking the trees, seeing who is out there, finding out what the interest is in Sox players, deciding who to target etc. Kenny is probably more on the big picture part of the business, as well as the guy that Rick comes to when something is close. AHEM QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Whereas Rick Hahn acts as the day to day manager, Kenny Williams is more of the big picture manager. Co-managers. (Robin Ventura is the assitant to the Regional Manager, although he will tell you he is the Assistant Regional Manager, which is incorrect) While I may have been trying to make a reference to The Office, I clearly said this first. So there.
  24. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) @georgeofman: Look for White Sox to bid high for Cuban free agent Yasmany Tomas. Power corner outfielder who knows Abreu. Pretty sure that was from like a month ago. I'll guess Phillies or Padres.
  25. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 01:15 PM) So he's lower than most of us on Ravelo, and VERY low on Bassitt. See, what I wonder is how much of this is the scout's lack of exposure to the player. There are contradicting reports on Ravelo through McDaniel and Stoltz on FGs alone, where I would guess that Stoltz believes Ravelo's raw power is closer to 65 or 70 where his game power is playing at about 40-45 right now, and I think McDaniel sees him as a 50-60 raw power type with about the same current power. Either way, the power needs to develop. If you believe it will, he ranks higher; if you do not, it will rank lower. It's a simple but logical conclusion. Regarding Bassitt, he only threw 86 IP between the majors, minors, and AFL. Who knows how much McDaniel actually got to see, but he's been a pretty unheralded guy throughout the minor league process but the Sox obviously seem to like him given a callup to the majors and an assignment to the AFL.
