  1. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) Maybe we sweat it out in the World Series a little more with Damaso getting the call in Game 1. Then who gets the win in Game 3?! *shivers* More than likely it would have been Chris Widger.
  2. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:38 AM) Hoping the best for Sox legends Scott Downs and Jason Frasor. Hahaha, I knew it
  3. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 07:27 AM) Semien was worse than Gillaspie at 3B. 10 errors in 31 games is a red flag that he would at least need a full season in AAA learning 3B if that is what management plans for him. I think he primarily needs work on his footwork on his throws. He had some really inaccurate throws because he rushed through them, but I thought his range and reactions were just fine. The advanced statistics agree with this: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...;position=2B/3B
  4. No matter what, there's going to be a former member of the White Sox winning a World Series ring this year, so I guess choose who you want to root for. Off the top of my head: Royals: Downs, Frasor Orioles: De Aza Cardinals: Pierzynski Giants: Peavy
  5. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) they kind of went against that rule with ozzie. Ozzie was a POS in his last year with the Sox, essentially talking contract with the Marlins while still under contract with the Sox. That wasn't a smear campaign whatsoever, that was the White Sox publicizing how big of a jerk Ozzie had become.
  6. QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) Uhhh, I don't have a paypal account so I had to get my winnings from fanduel via check....I withdrew 10 bucks and I just got a check for 100.....What would you do? I could reallllly use the $$. Don't wanna be a "scumbag" though. Call FanDuel immediately. The last thing you need is for them to debit your account with a $90 overdraft and then you not find out about it until it's at a collection agency or something like that. You can screw up a lot in life and still recover, but a s***ty credit score makes life really, really, really hard.
  7. Maybe this is how Dave Martinez will finally get his shot at managing.
  8. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) The fact that it took place right under THE CATCH couldn't possibly be funnier. The super slo-mo is really what makes it. I'm seriously just cheesing out at my desk right now.

  10. QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Frankly, I wouldn't write-off moving Montas or Danish for that matter. I could imagine many scenarios where it makes sense. Especially if we're the '15/'16 playoff hopes become imminent. Both guys had very impressive years but definitely have their warts. Like others have said, it wouldn't hurt to strike while the iron is hottest. While I do believe, we will be on the verge of competing very soon, one of the more interesting aspects of the team is going to be how Hahn handles our farm system in these "playoff" years. Ever since Hahn took over the team hasn't been a playoff team but once we are I am sure we will see some moves reminiscent of the KW era. I am not saying that's a good or bad thing but it seems people have locked Hahn in as the guy to save the minor leagues and keep the young guys around while Kenny is the devil who traded away all of our valuable prospects. It's far too early to make that judgement. Hahn was very much a part of the acquisitions taking place during the KW era and we'll surely see him stray from his, to this point, conservative nature. The interesting part will be the extent to which strays. I am interested too, but I think we saw some of that in 2012. The Sox went out and got Youkilis, Liriano, and Myers for what looked like virtually nothing at the time. Knowing how the Twins work their magic, Escobar naturally turned into a good looking player. Guys who had lower value than normal and looked like potential boom players. I think with an upgraded farm system, you may see better players brought in, but I don't think he's going to be a guy who will be too willing to overpay. In some situations though, you do have to. Liriano was a guy I did want the Sox to keep after 2012 as I though he could be good with the Sox like he was with the Pirates, but I don't think his style really meshed well with Cooper's.
  11. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) Billy Koch: -0.4 WAR, -0.98 WPA Keith Foulke: 1.8 WAR, 3.98 WPA Sox lost the division by four games and that's one of the easiest reasons to point to. I remember Colon had a complete game 2-hitter, allowing two solo HR's, and we lost 2-0. Oh but then without Neal Cotts, what do the White Sox do in 2005? But yeah, Koch sucked, even if he was a great guy.
  12. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 01:50 PM) Part of me wants MLB teams that haven't won in 30+ years to get success because they've had such a drought. I even followed the Cubs a little in the '80s and 2003 when they were in the playoffs. I don't really like their fans, but the franchise deserves to rebound. This is the one streak I do not want to see end just because it would ruin the jokes.
  13. QUOTE (Greyone @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) the Bills would make me happy just because of the history with both teams, them four SB losses, they need a win sometime. I nominate you to be the new Commissioner of the NFL.

  15. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) Should have been posted yesterday, buuuuuuuuuuuut How is Columbus Day still a thing? It's Native American Day in South Dakota (and a few other places), and I think it should be Native American Day nationally. That's not white guilt either.
  16. I don't think teams will outright ask about Montas's availability but instead will ask once the Sox start sniffing around some big names.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) I was actually trying to remember, the last time a small market exec who had successes with a small resource team, took over a big market team and had success again? Pat Gillick comes to mind immediately not because he went from small to big but because he put together great teams everywhere he went (and saw them all burned to the ground shortly after he left).
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) Haha - That was in early August when he had a little run of productivity. I'd put the odds of him making it on the pretty low end. Plus I recall in all of the discussions pretty much every one of us throwing up at the notion with Davidson. I still consider him a prospect in the sense that he's got quite a bit of talent, but you need to see some kind of sign this year to even consider him a possibility moving forward. I look at Davidson right now as I did Hawkins in 2013, but there's less time for him to turn it around.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) I think this has been beaten to death here on Soxtalk. To sum it up, I don't know that anyone thinks Davidson is a prospect anymore (Maybe 2 people). I don't think anyone thinks Reed is a great closer. Logically I think the majority felt that it made sense to trade Reed for a 3B prospect, problem was the Sox didn't target the right 3B prospect. I think there are some, a smaller percentage but not a minimal number, who thought they should have kept Reed given he was still cost effective and still solid and while he may not have been a great closer, could still have been a valuable member. In hindsight, while you can argue the theory behind the trade, I don't think anyone can really argue the results. At this point, Reed has more trade value then Davidson. We can debate Reed's value but we've already done that to death as we have Davidson and the trade so my vote is for the time being to let this argument die. Its ran its path here at Soxtalk. http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2014/...dseason-top-25/ Ummmmmmm, we kinda disagree with that.
  20. QUOTE (almagest @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) I lurked here for a long time (and WSI, but ehhhhhhhhhh) before creating an account, so I remember Ncorgbl. He was the one who used to call Bartolo Colon "tub of goo", and treat it like it was the best insult ever, right? Oh yes. He hated Colon. I don't understand why either, Colon was a good pitcher for the Sox his first go around, and they got him for essentially nothing.
  21. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Arguably the greatest defensive play of all time.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) That was the one good year after 2004. Comprehension is a skill I do not possess. He was also a great player in 2005. Less so offensively but he really was a defensive beast out there.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) He had one good season after 2004, that's it, then he completely fell off the map offensively. We will never know the truth, but I can't give the benefit of the doubt to anybody from that era. He had a great year in 2007 too.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 09:43 AM) Danks is terrible and his market value is negative. All of the proposals you guys are coming up with where it seems like a really good idea for us won't happen because you're right -- it would be a really good idea for us and thus a bad idea for the other team. If we're gonna move Danks, it's going to be for a similarly problematic guy. One where you really have to squint to see the upside. Because that's what Danks is. Yeah, Andre Ethier He's coming off a similar season to Danks, he's owed more money, he's locked up longer, and he's older. The Dodgers pick up $12 mill of the final year of the deal, which still saves them money overall and cuts the Sox cost from $18 mill to $8.5 mill ($6 mill plus $2.5 mill buyout). Frankly, to me, that's the deal that makes the most sense if there's any deal that makes sense.
  25. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Oct 13, 2014 -> 07:33 PM) I understand what you all are getting at. IMO, to say a player has a high ceiling, yet likely will not make the majors is an oxymoron. I think I'll just leave it at that. I don't think that's an oxymoron at all. Smart Cubs fan is an oxymoron. Look at Courtney Hawkins. He was a first round draft pick and put up similar numbers to Trayce Thompson at similar ages (save the catastrophe that was 2013). Do you believe his ceiling is higher or lower than Trayce's? Why?
