  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) The next time the White Sox have too many starters will be the first. I agree with the second point. If they don't think he can crack the rotation but could help relieving, I think he gets moved to the bullpen. His being so gung ho about it will probably eventually seal his fate, unless he just shows he is more than just a back end guy. LOL, yeah, it was kind of made tongue in cheek. Basically if they have a full rotation and other guys capable of starting in the high minors (say a Montas, Danish, Jablowme, whoever) then they can move him to the bullpen.
  2. You always prefer guys starting over relieving. If and when the Sox have an abundance of starting pitching, and Bassitt proves incapable of starting, then he'll be moved to the pen.
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) Maybe Montas too, because he has to be protected on the 40 man this year. Probably wants a look at him, but it has nothing to do with protecting him. Montas was always going to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
  4. QUOTE (SnB @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) I got hilton'd last night. It's always a crappy feeling to be way behind before the games even start. Guy I'm facing had Luck and Hilton. Thankfully Fitzmagic didn't find Hopkins very much because he only ended up with 2 points. Down 62-0 heading into Sunday is still not a good feeling.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) $56 million for the next 3 years is guaranteed, though. That's almost another Adam Dunn contract there...or Danks. If they sent $20 million, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't feel comfortable committing $36 million over 3 years to a platoon outfielder. I'd just as soon give that to Nick Markakis or Colby Rasmus and not have to surrender any talent in return. The idea is that the Dodgers would eat money somehow, someway. The Sox wouldn't trade for Andre Ethier at $19 mill per season.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:57 AM) The problem is they're essentially gambling the season on Bassitt/Carroll, Noesi and then eventually Rodon being able to perform, and perform well in the first half of 2015 (and Sale/Quintana remaining healthy, of course). Odds are against that going well, especially the first part...although stranger things have happened. There will hopefully be a lot more patience with Rodon than they demonstrated with Daniel Hudson in 2010. And that's assuming you have a much improved bullpen as well. Why would they be gambling the season on Bassitt or Carroll? One of those is the 5th starter to start the season, one the 6th starter. Once Rodon comes up, that changes to 6th/7th. If everyone fails, your team was doomed to begin with anyways. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:59 AM) Ethier would be okay if it was just two years, but four is at least one too many. Good thing there's only 3 years guaranteed.
  7. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) Maybe not $20 million, but not too far off. Fangraphs valued him at $14.8 million this year. Take away his DL stints and that number would be $18+. I think Eaton would probably get $12-15 mill a year in free agency. He's a similar player to Ellsbury but probably not overall as talented.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:48 AM) YUCK. YUCK. YUCK. No thanks. They're better off buying low on 2-3 guys like Domonic Brown or Alvarez than pinning your hopes on those two aging veterans. Heck, I'd rather have Aoki than either of them. He's not going to come back to haunt you financially, and he's the type of glue player you need...but that would definitely necessitate a big DH bat coming on board. I actually think Ethier makes a ton of sense for the White Sox. Hamilton less so, but the possibility exists if LA is willing to eat about 60 million.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Will believe it when I see it. Didn't happen with Dunn, but the White Sox are in a position where they need to compete as quickly as possible...and letting John Danks' sunk cost stand in the way of it happening won't sit well for fans tired of hearing the excuse about needing to clear Adam's contract for three years now. There are a few things at work. Going into 2013, Dunn was coming off a resurgent year and the Sox felt he was going to be fine in the middle of the order, and he kind of was. They team absolutely bombed and they started selling off parts. Going into last offseason, the Sox knew it was going to be a rebuilding year, so there was no urgency to eat money to move him - why eat money when there's no replacement and no real need to get rid of the player? Danks' situation is different. The Sox are looking to add a right handed starting pitcher (having said as much), have 3 starters on the staff already, and have Rodon waiting in the wings. You obviously want more than 5 starters, but Bassitt and Carroll also showed that they can handle it a bit too, so you are looking at 7 different starters. There is a reason to move Danks.
  10. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 10:03 AM) You can 99% pencil in Noesi and Danks in the rotation next year. At this point, Dank is your 5th starter. Other than his salary, I can live with that. Noesi is also a 5th starter material as well. So if you have 2 weak pitchers at the end of your rotation, you need a couple of solid mid rotation arms. If we trade Q for Puig, we basically need to bring in a pitcher on the high end side if we want to compete, i.e. someone like Shields, which most of the board would hate to bring in. I am not convinced Masterson can be your #2 starter if you are looking to compete. Noesi I agree with. I think they're going to look to move Danks and will eat money (and perhaps a substantial amount) in order to do so.
  11. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) At points last night they had three guys on him. He really is like the perfect defensive player. It's hard to grasp how much he helps that Texans defense, but I imagine it's pretty close to the effect Peyton Manning had on the Colts offense. You can't just insert the next man up. If he ever went down, the Texans would be screwed.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) I'm not so sure about that, although it depends on the definition of "good." We need at least 3-4 contributors from every draft, and at least one of them to be very good to catch up with all the bad drafts. 3-4??? Really? On average, who hits on 3-4 draft picks? You have unrealistic expectations.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 08:54 AM) The websites I've looked at say he's going to be a free agent in 2019, so that would be four years. Does anyone have a definitive answer? Didn't realize he'd accrued a year of service time basically being a 4th outfielder. Still, there's no rush.
  14. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 08:47 AM) Watt reminds me a lot of Reggie White. They move him all over the line. Inside and outside. He blew by the right tackle on one play last night and on the next he just bull rushed him right into the QB. And what are you going to do, chip him with a RB? LOL, no.
  15. What's the rush to extend Eaton at this point? The Sox still have 5 years of control. Maybe at some point during this season, but I think if those conversations happen, it will be after next season at the earliest.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 09:28 PM) If the White Sox come any where close to seeing the ceilings of Rodon and Adams, this years draft was a win. If Carlos Rodon is a good starting pitcher, this draft is a win. If you get value out of any of the other players they signed, it's icing.
  17. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 08:18 AM) considering the graduation of Semien and no mention of Micah Johnson and Sanchez I think the system is higher than I thought it would be. This is why I hate these rankings. Yes, it's nice to know who is the best, who is the worst, and where do they rank otherwise, but as a White Sox fan, our only concern should be "is the White Sox collective pool of talent increasing and are there going to be significant contributors to the MLB team?" The answer to both is yes.
  18. I have seen people suggest Corey Dickerson too. 2014 Home: .363/.415/.684/1.098 .467 wOBA 171 wRC+ Away: .252/.305/.431/.735 .319 wOBA 102 wRC+ Even seeing those, I'd be perfectly content moving guys for him because while I wouldn't expect him to put up a 171 wRC+ at USCF, I also wouldn't expect him to suddenly turn into the completely average, ordinary hitter he was away from Coors Field either. The same, can be said of Carlos Gonzalez but it has to be at the right price. If the Rockies wouldn't take "halfway decent" for him, I wouldn't bother trying to acquire him.
  19. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) Seems like another money grab. Why on earth do you need a certificate when you're employer should be training you on it since their asses are on the line. Employers can be bad about training for that kind of stuff, and it's nice to have an objective opinion going into a job on food health. You may have a co-worker willing to use 10 day old deli meat because "it smells fine," but that s*** needed to be in the garbage 3 days ago at the very minimum. And then you'd think "why wouldn't the employer just pay it?" but if it's a fast food restaurant with high turnover rates, the employer is going to be spendnig an assload of money and a lot of times they'll be doing it for incompetent workers. I'm still ServSafe certified through next July or so, but I'm sure there are a lot of technicalities that have changed since that point in time.
  20. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) When you compare it to the other stratospheric pitcher contracts, CC's looks great. His is probably the best case so far - pitches like a stud for a while, then flames out in the last few years. Greinke has been fine so far but there's a long way to go and he hasn't equaled CC's best years with the Yankees. Signing the best pitcher just isn't wise. Because most of the time, the best pitcher is not the best pitcher for long. It goes back to the idea that there's no such thing as a pitching prospect. So many guys can make one tweak and go from terrible to unhittable and the same amount of guys can have one thing go wrong and see everything fall by the way side.
  21. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) If we get him I see no way that Tank is on the roster next season. I don't see any way Viciedo is on the roster to begin with.
  22. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) I'm team Scherzer. Don't mind them overpaying on one guy when you have Sale and Q locked up cheap, Rodon eventually at minimum for a few years as well as the core position players up that are cheap now. Scherzer is probably going to go the way of many pitchers before him where he'll get 7 years and $200+ million while having an opt out after year 3 or 4. Essentially, if he's good, you don't get him very long, and if he's bad and gets hurt, you're even more screwed. I'm letting someone else tackle the headache that will be Max Scherzer.
  23. 60 man rosters for football makes way, way too much sense for the NFL to actually consider it.
