Kenny not worried about Danks & Floyd as #4 & 5

QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 08:51 AM) This just might be a 20 page thread... .... love your avatar and signature pic -
"These are guys everyone would want and most people in the industry view ultimately as top-of-the-rotation guys," Williams said last week at the winter meetings in Nashville. "Our pitching is not going to be a problem this year. We'll be just fine in that area." "Floyd showed us last year he's ready for full-time big-league work," Williams said. "So did John Danks. The only reason Danks did not pitch those last couple of weeks was because we knew what we had. But we wanted to see that in Gavin Floyd so we could take that next step with both of them." "We have the starting pitchers," Guillen said. "I don't know if we have a good enough lineup." http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines ========================== Where does Kenny get this confidence in these guys? Danks was decent for a while last year and Floyd was awful most of the time. I understand Floyd pitched well in the last month and Danks was also good from time to time, but the data set is not large enough to make any conclusions yet. Even if Kenny has confidence in them, shouldn't he just shut up? Do you guys really think these guys can pitch every 5th day, especially after seeing how Det has upgraded their O? I am fine with going with this direction, but I just wish Kenny would stop making statements that are based on hope at best. There is no data to show these guys will be successful as our #4 and 5 and this stuff about everyone else seeing these guys as top of the rotation is pure crap. Did Kenny learn from his debacle off season acquisitions from last year? Who here thought that Aardsma, Masset or Sisco were going to be any good? And what happened when they were called upon to pitch? Geez....KW can be so delusional sometimes and he does not get it that he needs to learn to manage expectations. If he had not made any comment about "getting the big fish" in the off season, no one would really be giving him grief for not getting anyone....now, if Floyd and Danks fail to deliver and are the reason we lose games, again, Kenny will get hell from the media and fans. Why not shut up and let it play out instead of raising expectations when there is no data to support it?

Anyone else remember when everyone was down on Jon Garland when he could never live up to his potential? Anyone else remember when everyone was down on Crede when he could never live up to his potential? Well, maybe Anderson might break out too one of these years....it is not like it has never happened before. If he does break out to his potential, it would be huge for the Sox. I know, I am dreaming....but stranger things have happened.
-
Returning back to the topic that was originally being discussed, is Crede going to the Brewers or not? Are there any whispers about who we might be getting back??? TIA

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 12:10 AM) What happened is things cost $1 and KW only has $.50.

Just a few years back, we had Maggs, Carlos Lee and Rowand starting for us....with Carl Everett and Jermaine Dye and Scotty Pod soon joining us too.....and if there was one position that was stocked in our minor league system, it was the OF position with Sweeney, Anderson, Borchard, Owens, Chris Young etc How the heck did we get to this point where now we are screwed at the OF position ad hoping that Carlos Quentin can be our saviour????? Anyone else find this mind boggling? Sorry if this sounds like a useless post, but this has been bothering me the past 2 days or so....how did our strength become such a weakness?

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 11:51 PM) Without a doubt KW should be looking into this. Roberts would solve more than a few problems. Update on ESPN 1000 says The Cubs are looking into him as well. I really do not read what you post Please tell me who that is in your avatar and where did you get that pic from?

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:42 PM) A team devoid of prospects did not burn one of their best last year to give a 2 month tryout for Richar. Richar will start and will get every chance to prove himself. They will most likely platoon him with Ozuna. Brian Roberts would cost too much as in Gio and other top prospects to cover that Chit. Bedard is out of our price range as well. Cabrera is a 24 year old superstar and worth the price made. The rest are not worth burning the farm to the ground over. For a minute I thought you were talking to yourself....

QUOTE(Hatchetman @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) I'm scarred for life from watching people like Steve Lyons, Carlos Martinez, and Kenny Williams try to play 3B. I'm not in favor of giving one away for nothing. Greg Norton

People can focus on gaps at at LF, CF, SP, RP etc, but one of our big problems has been hitting against left handed pitchers....we were atrocious last year and except for Santana, we will still get to face all those lefties in our division.... How are we going to get better there? Is Rowand better against lefties? What are the splits for Fukudome? What about Carlos Quentin against lefties? What is Cabrera's splits?
-
I agree with the original poster....get Kenny for a year and platoon him with Owens for leadoff/center field Another option I would consider is trading for Girffey.... Better than trading away prospects for Coco freaking Crisp.... Anyone want Sandy Alomar or Carl Everett or Timo Perez back too?
-
I will probably get flamed for this big time, but what the heck. Kenny - stop wasting money in signing Rowand or Andrew Jones....this is a good time to make the trade for Ken Griffey JR. He can play CF and LF for us....provides us with another left handed hitter.....and yes, he will not play all 162 games, but we can platoon him with Owens and Anderson. You know his power #s will go up in the cell and he has been averaging 30 HRs per year for the last 3 years, so it is safe to say he will hit at least 35 to 40 HRs. And he will not cost any premium prospects to get from Cincy, and we might even be able to make Cincy pay some of his contract. We can still go ahead and get Coco Crisp to play the other OF position and be the lead off hitter..... Am I the only one who is considering Ken Griffey as a good stop gap for the next couple of years? If we are serious about being a contender next year, I see this as a good fit. Yes, he is old and yes, he is injury prone, but he will produce next year at least. Ken's stats the last 3 years: 2004: 300 AB; 20 HR; 60 RBI; 0.351 OBP; 0.513 SLG; 0.253 BA 2005: 491 AB; 35 HR; 92 RBI; 0.369 OBP; 0.576 SLG; 0.301 BA 2006: 428 AB; 27 HR; 72 RBI; 0.316 OBP; 0.486 SLG; 0.252 BA Anyone else on this bandwagon? Flame away Jerry Owens or Coco Crisp OF Cabrera SS Jim Thome DH Paulie 1B Ken Griffey OF Jermaine Dye OF Crede 3B Pierzinsky C Richar 2B

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines =================== "All in all, where we are today is in a good place heading into the winter meetings," Williams said Wednesday after the White Sox announced the signing of free agent reliever Scott Linebrink to a four-year, $19 million contract. ==================== "It doesn't have to be a center fielder. We can stay with [Jerry] Owens in center field. We still have Ryan Sweeney. We still have Brian Anderson. We may choose to go the left-field route, or we may choose to move one of those guys to left field and plug in a center fielder. So we've got a lot of flexibility." ==================== Boston is looking for relief help, and the Sox's Mike MacDougal could be available after losing his role to Linebrink. MacDougal is guaranteed nearly $5 million over the next two seasons and has a $3.75 million option for 2010. Relievers David Aardsma and Nick Masset, both demoted at midseason, are out of options. "This is the business side of baseball," Williams said. "Those players who solidified themselves and gave us a certain amount of confidence that we don't have to explore other options, they've earned that right. The ones who had a difficult time last year, there's got to be an understanding on their part this is part of the drill." ===================== Williams said he nearly acquired Linebrink from San Diego in July 2006, but the Padres wanted third baseman Josh Fields. Williams pointed out that Linebrink's 3.55 ERA in 27 games last season with the Brewers was a "blip," adding that he drove to Milwaukee to scout him and came away impressed. "He has that plus fastball," Williams said. "He has sink."

So what do folks think was the turning point of this season? While we never got it going offensively, we played really well (starting pitching + bullpen) for the 1st 40 games or so.....so what was the turning point to lead to this disaster where I just know every day that we will lose or win ugly....most of the time lose. Many of you might hate me for saying this but I have to say the Cubs series.....we should have at least won 2 of 3 and most likely swept them at their house.....and we just gave games away.....and it's been horrible ever since then. Thoughts?

How good has the Aardsma for Cotts trade been for the Sox? This one seems to be not getting the recognition the Danks trade does.....but 1.25 ERA for Aardsma.
