Red Sox discussing Betts trade with anyone who will take the bait
caulfield12 replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Can be updated to Padres and Red Sox again... Apparently the Padres are willing to trade some big-time prospects AND Myers’ contract for Betts in 2020. Myers salary helps as an offset for SD financially next season, SD would probably have to send some additional money along for 21/22 or really dig deep into their prospect vault to make it worthwhile. Dennis Lim from The Athletic reported it first. http://sports.yahoo.com/padres-pursuing-betts-110000843.html Myers, Patino, Abrams and Trammell for Betts...that’s just too much for a one year rental, but it would be ballsy as hell on the part of Preller. Could also cost him his job. -
A lot of people have issues with those still advocating for the Rebel flag as well, I sincerely doubt he’s a Civil War buff.

The WHO has been debating for two days about declaring it a public health emergency...but seems they’re still deadlocked at 50/50. Part of the reason is they still don’t know exactly what happened at Ground Zero, the live animal and seafood market. It has been passed from bats to another type of animal, yesterday the theory was snakes, but they’re still not even certain about that...and that whole area of original outbreak has been completely disinfected. The other problem is this actually started December 12th and not New Year’s Eve, so it’s almost six weeks out and the incubation period when you can still be a carrier/transmitter could be as long as two weeks. So it’s no surprise, for those who still remember the movie Contagion from 2011. That movie had its plot centered around a spread from Macao casinos, Kowloon and HK, some of the densest population areas in the world. The mayor is under fire big time for allowing a massive local Spring Festival dinner party with 40,000+ guests and over 12,000 “shared” dishes to go forward. When all is said and done, waiting a couple of weeks too long and not considering the impact of three billion holiday trips by train/bus/plane/private car/Uber-Didi will be one of the most important contributing factors. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Chinese government tried to push back on declaring it an emergency to save face during the holidays...at least for a week. They’re still recovering from Hong Kong and the attention on Xinjiang “re-education” camps for Muslims. This will just make the mood of the public more tense when you try to quarantine roughly 20 million people and counting. The mortality rate is still low and hitting mostly elderly with pre-existing conditions...but there are rumors of thousands if not tens of thousands in local hospitals...they’re even building an additional “hospital” in just six days to attempt to accommodate overflow. Imperial College scientists are saying the likely number of infected number 4,000-10000, rather than the 600+ or so the government has published so far. That means hundreds will eventually die, not just the 18 accounted for as of now. CNN: WHO defines a public health emergency of international concern as "an extraordinary event" that constitutes a "public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease" and "to potentially require a coordinated international response." Previous emergencies have included Ebola, Zika and H1N1. While Ghebreyesus praised the Chinese government and its cooperation with WHO on Wednesday, Houssin then expressed that the information they had from Chinese authorities was too limited and imprecise for the committee to make a recommendation that day. The committee remained divided — roughly 50/50 — over the course of the two-day meeting, Houssin said Thursday. Advisers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have told CNN they are concerned that Chinese health officials have still not released basic epidemiological data about the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, making it more difficult to contain.

Offseason 2019-2020 MLB Catch All Thread

Unless 45% of their fans in Chicago can’t access their games and they’re eliminated from the playoff race before the ASB. Then things could change a bit more rapidly...especially if they trade Bryant for a sub-par return. -
Someone would figure out a way to jam or distort signals (or hack into the comms)...yeah, I don’t think the LA City Council or state legislators claiming the 2017 and 18 WS trophies will have much of an impact.

Zion debut tonight. Rough start, numerous turnovers, out of shape and can only play in short bursts. But boy did he really put on a show in the second half. Rebounding, passing, made 4/4 from three in a short time span and totally changed the momentum of the game around, but ran out of gas and had to sit at the end as SA pulled away. https://www.espn.com/nba/game?gameId=401161305 Stream was going in and out, he actually scored 17 consecutive points for Pelicans to give them a one point lead. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28538389/the-best-moments-zion-williamson-stunning-nba-debut -
Anyone has any questions...I’m stuck about five kilometers from the epicenter. Public transportation out of city shut down, and food quickly flying off the shelves of grocery stores. Can’t go out in public without a mask. Chinese air force will bombard city with bleach tonight between 5-9 p.m. Chinese New Year travel plans all cancelled...heck, the WHO is probably going to declare an emergency today, which means most countries will lock down flights in and out of China.

Well, the other point here is lots of movies are made every year (usually with lower production budgets) targeting African American audiences (Tyler Perry/Barbershop), Hispanic audiences, Asian audiences (Crazy Rich Asians), Christian/born-again ecumenical audiences, older conservative males (most Eastwood films these days), whatever. It’s up to the studios to market them effectively. The best example is Get Out and Us successfully attracting an audience from across the spectrum. Even American Sniper managed to appeal to many Americans. It still comes down to making GOOD films...and the audience will discover them. Movies like Parasite and The Farewell immediately come to mind as foreign language films that have succeeded in crossing over to mainstream audiences. Greta Gerwig was able to bring together a talented cast for Little Women, and the story probably would have been told in a slightly different way by a male director. That’s a positive thing...just like getting rid of Michael Bay’s leering camera shots of every woman from the waist down getting out of a car in his movies.

Ozuna fired Boras, right?

Except the odds that would be willing to sign for one year at $15 million and platoon (lowering his 2021 value) are what? 3-5%? If they really wanted him, they shouldn’t have signed EE. OR the asking price at that time was a heckuva lot more than they were willing to pay...especially waiting again until the last days of February and missing out on both targets.

How much heat are Collins and Painter under? -
What is the comp between Baines and Edgar Martinez?

Can we play out 2020 and see how often Robert gets injured, first? It’s probably going to end up that solidifying the defense and at least protecting Robert’s LH side will be worth giving up some offensive production. Logically, Pederson once again becomes the most realistic move for next year, deoending on what happens with Mazara (and our OF prospects.)

Haven’t some stadiums toyed around with issuing tablets or I-pads to those sitting in box/Scout seats...or at least providing free WiFi access?

This is why Filibuster doesn’t exist anymore. The idea that roughly 40-45% of the US only cares about putting America first at all times while the slim majority want America to be last or to fall apart...it’s simply impossible to discuss in those terms, from that frame of reference. Hence, no point in discussing. That said, we now live in a time and place where every single aspect of our lives is being connected or correlated, rightly or wrongly, with politics. And nobody, let alone HoF voters, is ever going to be accused of ever being 100% objective, whatever that even means today.

Combined with losing $75 million in taxpayer monies...if he was in the billionaire/“job creator” class right now, it’s probably enough to push him over the top. https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2012/07/23/38-studios-end-game/

Tyreek Hill is the most dangerous player in the NFL and went in the fifth. I guess you can argue he would have gone late first or second had he not played for West Alabama (as opposed to ‘Bama) and the DV charges from OklaState. On the field, Hill was utilized very evenly as a running back (25 carries for 237 yards and one touchdown), wide receiver (27 receptions for 444 yards and a touchdown), punt returner (20 returns averaging 10.7 yards with two touchdowns), and kick returner (also 20 returns averaging 23.0 yards with two touchdowns). In his 11 games for the team, he never exceeded 100 yards rushing or receiving, and averaged 135 all-purpose-yards until a 307-all-purpose-yard burst against Delta State in Game 8. After this, his production tapered off quickly to a season-ending -3 all-purpose-yards against the North Alabama Lions.[19] The 49ers might want to talk to that N.Alabama defensive coordinator.

He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Hey, just because at least 50 percent of the city gets its TV from a provider that has yet to come to terms on a deal for the network, why would fans be upset? During his time with Dempster, Tom decided to wax nostalgic about the good old days when you could watch every game on WGN TV for free. He was promptly heckled by a woman in the audience loudly enough that it could be heard on the live stream. The next day he was interviewed on 670 The Score and claimed he wasn’t booed, at least not personally. I’m sure that was a reaction to an overnight email chain where Laura and Todd complained about Tom hogging all of the boos for himself. On Saturday, the Cubs finally had a flurry of announcements about the upcoming TV network, none of which included an explanation as to why they are starting a network that they own and program themselves and yet they didn’t bother to put the team name in the name of the network. Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney dropped a lot of information during the session, including, for some reason, his age (he’s 57), and he predicted that the team would come to deals with “all” of the streaming services and work out an agreement with Comcast before Opening Day.

Well, there are probably some exceptions, like Derrick Henry (2nd round). Chubb, 2nd round McCaffrey, 8th overall Elliott, 4th overall C.Carson, 7th round Fournette, 4th overall J. Jacobs, 24th overall Mixon, 2nd D.Cook, 2nd

That’s where the whole four quadrant movie theory comes from. It’s definitely going to struggle with the majority of males under 35, unless they’re huge classical lit or Florence Pugh/Ronan fans. They will get the girls...at least some, with Timothy Chalamet. At least something like The Handmaid’s Tale is told in an interesting fashion, I’m also not sure the flashbacks work as well here. 1st quadrant male under 25 2nd quadrant female under 25 3rd quadrant male over 25 4th quadrant female over 25

The problem is finding a dynamic tight end. It’s not be accident that Kelce and Kittle are two of the best, and both in the Super Bowl. Most importantly, someone that blocks as well as Kittle really opens the running attack when he can occupy the caliber of defenders that he does. It’s very rare to find someone who enjoys this facet of the game and freeing up his teammates maybe just as much as catching the ball downfield. And it’s equally difficult to inculcate that mentality when it’s not there in high school or college. The players who are not 4-5 star recruits but 2-3 or walk-on types have to focus on all facets of their game to get noticed by Division 1 teams, and that usually turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Kelce was a 3rd rounder, Kittle a fifth. Gronkowski was picked 42nd. Just have to do more homework, compared to QB.

If the Cubs broke their World Series drought behind Sosa, it would be a completely different story.
