At any rate, it’s not clear what #1 starter we could get other than those guys like Stroman, Gray, Syndegaard/deGrom, Bauer, etc., under limited control. The whole point of young players is to take advantage of that cost savings...this would only shorten the competitive window unless you were confident you could turn around Foltynewitz, Freeland, etc.

Well, this is really an observation about age, maturity and perspective...like having a family. Unless it’s your team in the World Series like the Red Sox in 2004, White Sox in 2005 or Cubs in 2003/2016, you’re almost always going to have a big/ger picture way of looking at sports unless you’re gambling on it. When you’re in your teens and twenties, everything seems like life and death. Then we grow out of it.

Actually, Quintana was also very good his rookie season, 2012...with very limited AA experience. Buehrle was very effective from the minute he joined the bullpen and gradually forced his way into the rotation. Kip Wells was very impressive his rookie season.

Well sure, but then that’s diametrically opposed to the root of fanatic, which is fan. If that's the case, if you can just coolly and dispassionately watch a game like Benetti, well then there’s almost no point in having a favorite team unless they’re competitive. But finding things to LOL about in another lost season is part of the entertainment as well.

Almost 60 pitches already... Should have followed the scouting report on d’Arnaud, no sliders. Could feel that grand slam coming after the second walk of the inning. Osich coming in if Pham reaches...one of those games that might end up with a 0.0 television rating like the Astros used to manage.

Right now, I’d put it like this... 1) Angels....from Southern Cal, pitched with Bauer at UCLA, LA would have three marketable stars in Trout, Ohtani, Cole 2) Astros...obvious reasons 3) Phillies...need another frontline starter to compete with Braves, willingness to spend (could alternatively go after Stroman, Syndegaard, Bauer, Minor, etc.) 4) Yankees...need more RHP balance, Severino’s recovery a question mark 5&6) Rangers and White Sox...Texas, because they’ll have money to spend, he’s shown that he enjoys environment in Texas and is quite comfortable there, but no pitcher wanted to deal with July/August weather although the new stadium should change that calculus White Sox or Rangers would have to offer $210-240 million over 6 years to get it done...which Reinsdorf is highly unlikely to approve for the numerous reasons discussed dating back to Jaime Navarro.

Not in the greatest fielding position as he finishes his delivery, but nasty stuff. Some fastballs at 98 are easily hittable, his seems to be more dynamic, crisper somehow.
