  1. http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/i...ind-cubs-season If you want to psychoanalyze Theo Epstein, this is one of the most in-depth articles written about him in a while.
  2. A LOTTA people disliked Truman for most of his presidency (JFK, too), he always suffered from comparisons with the much more sophisticated FDR, but he turned out to be one of our better presidents, in terms of the judgement of history. There's never been a president with close to the initial unfavorable ratings of either Clinton or Trump...and Trump ALWAYS trails Clinton in his category, with at least an additional 5-10% finding him even more deplorable.
  3. It's really hard to COUNT on James Shields being the same guy he was EVEN in the first half of 2016 as we look forward to the 2017 rotation...let alone the pitcher he was in 2013 or 2014 in KC, where he was already experiencing some struggles with diminished stuff, elevated pitch counts, etc. With that went some of his mental edge and the swagger of being "Big Game" James in Tampa. You simply can't throw that many innings for that many consecutive years without payback. Ask Mark Buehrle.
  4. Nearing a 6 ERA on the season after being at 3.06 after two months...ERA with the White Sox now over 7.
  5. QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 05:10 PM) Oh no, he stole Obama's "Americanness" I am sure Obama lost sleep over it and was really hurt. Trump said the stuff about Obama being born in Kenya (which isn't racist btw, it's just factually incorrect) and has since reneged on it. Just like HRC didn't support gay marriage for over a decade and then flipped the switch in 2013. I don't see you calling her a homophobe or claiming she stole millions of Americans' "Americanness." Key point. Deliberately lying with a racist veneer to take advantage of visceral hatred of the president by a minority of Americans versus maintaining a position that was in alignment with the majority of the country at the time...and her religious beliefs. You can argue all you want that some Democrats only jumped on the LGBT train when it was too late, but that's politics for you. It's one of the main reasons Obama won in 2008, he was courageous enough to take an early stand against the Iraq War. Clinton is a politician, and she waffles when it's politically expedient...shifting with the wind and pollsters (see TPT deal or NAFTA.) That said, you can't remotely compare the two, or you're going to end up with every single Republican looking even more intolerant, unless you're going to take the Pence position here that your personal opposition still resides in moral/Biblical grounding and will never waver, no matter what.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 20, 2016 -> 03:44 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 4m4 minutes ago Abreu: "What we talked about yesterday [Royals have more desire than White Sox] was about me and I don't have anything to add. That's it." Sounds like the LaRoche, Sale and Eaton pr spin club polished that one to avoid further damage...feels like the kind of thing you would say in North Korea, Cuba or China as a hostage.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2016 -> 09:17 AM) You know, probably doesn't matter. But it seemed like the Royals all came up together as a group through the minors, winning together. That's a philosophy that the Cards use, and Twins as well. Now, our farm system really hasn't been a huge contributor to our roster, but we have a group that I'm really pumped for from this and last years drafts. I'd like to let them play together and win like they did at Great Falls, vs prioritizing personal challenges and putting them on garbage teams all over system. May not matter, may prolong time up, but there are a lot of college talents that we drafted, see if they can learn how to win as a group. Look at the progression paths for guys like Beckham, Sale, Rodon, Fulmer and Burdi...they never stay/ed together with a minor league team for very long. Other teams have more depth/talent and typically promote their players together, one step at a time, spending 4-5 years in the minors together. At best, you can say Semien, Thompson and Saladino might have spent x amount of time playing together, could probably throw in Micah and Carlos Sanchez as well. Of course, that progression works more naturally when you draft a group of high school hitters or pitchers together and keep them largely intact. It's also the reason certain teams that have their second/third string players all together at either AA or AAA playing together on one team of real prospects tends to succeed more often when those kids are called up...especially when they've already won 2-3 minor league championships together.
  8. Cummings is also the one who called it a witch hunt, waste of millions of tax dollars, political sideshow meant to bring down Hillary in an election year, etc. Just because there are Dems on the committee who participate in questioning doesn't affect its highly partisan nature. A bipartisan committee is ones like they typically announce about tax code reform or getting government to work more efficiently, and almost nothing ever comes out of them...where there is almost always equal representation of the two parties, but they have little real power, certainly in a legislative or legal sense.
  9. The irony is the Royals don't even care right now. They had lost 11 out of 16 and for all practical purposes were dead in the water before the last three games. They would still have to go 10-2 and the Orioles/Blue Jays 5-7 to catch them...jumping over four teams in the process. DEAD.
  10. Wasting $3-5 million at a time on 3 players who turn out to be worthless instead of getting one really good player is how they always end up in the same predicament. If Hahn or KW want to pin their jobs on Lawrie, Avi, Fulmer or Shields outperforming in 2017, more power to them. That type of plan will quickly be exposed by the schedule.
  11. Comey told Bureau employees in an internal memo that it wasn't a close call (whether she mishandled classified information). Orange County Register. Hardly a bastion of Democratic sympathizers. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/clinton...tee-cooper.html
  12. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 10:22 AM) Suicide Squad has a legitimate chance at $800M as it crossed The Winter Solider at the box office. Suicide Squad also has better legs than Civil War at the Box Office. Keep in mind that Suicide Squad was banned in China, the most important INTL market for films. My Chinese hs students are smart enough to like Deadpool a helluva lot more than SS. Warcraft, that's because of the popularity of the game. Pacific Rim, that's another story.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 08:00 PM) Finally somebody said it. Sox don't want it most times they take the field. For some reason they seem to play hard against the AL East and the Cubs get their attention UNTIL we assure ourselves at least a split in the series. Sox played so passively after winning those 2 in the Cell. The other teams in the Central care about beating the Sox; the Sox could give a s*** about beating those teams in the Central. They mail in those games effort wise. You guys despised Ozzie but he wouldn't have put up with this s*** without calling out these bums. Ozzie got owned by the Twins, Royals and Tigers...with the exception of 2005 and 2008.
  14. So basically Huma Abedin's suspect because of her ties to Saudi Arabia, Colin Powell's not in any trouble at all for announcing to the world that Israel has 200 nuclear missiles aimed at Teheran, And HRC is going to be impeached. http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/polit...ney-war-crimes/ That will happen about the same time Bush, Cheney and Powell are brought up on charges of lying to Congress and the United Nations about Iraq having chemical/biological weapons and yellow cake blah blah ... Or when they are arraigned on "war crimes" charges in the U.S. I'll bet all of Greg's houses against it happening...regardless of whether she wins or loses.
  15. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) I dont want any of them. Its a very frustrating election for me. As I mentioned a few days ago I would have preferred Bernie, or even Biden than any of these people and I really disagree with their politics. My strongest opinion in this election is Id rather have anyone on the planet as President than Hillary Clinton, its just really unfortunate that the only plausible way for that to happen now is with Donald Trump. The problem is articulating an argument for why he would do a better job in foreign policy. Let's forget Clinton for a moment, which is going to be a more right wing version of Obama...more hawkish. Does he have the temperament to NOT get America involved in a major foreign conflict the next four years? That America would be safer with him as leader? Other than arguing he'll surround himself with the best and the brightest...and that's exactly what led Kennedy into the Bay of Pigs, listening to his top military advisors. Since he doesn't have the requisite expertise, the concern is that he'll simply be led astray, just like GW Bush was by Wolfowitz, Cheney and Rumsfield.
  16. It is ironic that Reed pitching well in Albers' spot was exactly what the Sox needed...meanwhile, we had to trade three more minor leaguers to cover 3b. Devenski would have done the job as well. That's the cost of all in every year.
  17. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 04:19 PM) lol youre barking up the wrong tree if you thing Im going to defend Trump. He's said and done plenty of stuff that warrants these attacks. I just think people focusing on the pettier stuff like his taxes and birther is a poor approach because of reasons Ive stated in the other thread. There is plenty of stuff to go at Trump for that is a lot more important than that stuff. So what exactly do you and Greg want? At least Greg has occasionally supported Sanders and mentioned the other two candidates as possibilities...but it's clear he is more anti-Hillary than pro anyone else, which is his democratic right.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 04:05 PM) You forget you were the one who mentioned it first? Again, what is the point? Being snippy wont win a lot of arguments. This just in...we also accidentally shot Pat Tillman, too, and deliberately covered it up. That, and the "enhanced interrogation/rendition protocols" are 1000x worse than an accidental bombing or human error. Abu Ghraib ring a bell? Talk about losses of America's cloak of morality, justice and righteousness, you can start there. Guantanamo Bay, for good measure.
  19. These threads are starting to motivate me even more to send in my Iowa absentee ballot from China for Hillary. No, she hasn't articulated well her reasons for seeking office, and it seemed like she was just hoping to run out the clock like UNC with their four corners offense, but when every day brings about another police shooting and/or sorority girls from KSU thinking it's cute to dress up in blackface and use the N word...the idea that Trump has the capacity and compassion to change America for the better is just anathema. Everything he has ever done was to serve his own best interests, or, basically, his corporation's. His children are exactly the same. Calm and poised they are not. Ivanka even got rattled by questioning from a Cosmo reporter. And she's supposedly the best and brightest of the bunch. When you deliberately lie about the president's birth certificate for years on end...what possible defensible reason is there for doing that, or deliberately mis-stating his religion? The worst part is I'm convinced 90% of American history and govn't teachers have better grasp of foreign/domestic/public policy...I just wish he was debating with Bill Clinton instead next Monday night.
  20. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 03:03 PM) What's new... KC kicks the sox ass. To be honest, KC really plays well against the central and bad against everyone else haha. They have a losing record against Cleveland but double digit wins against everyone else. Specifically, two AL West teams...inexplicably, one of them is the A's.
  21. Would still be shocked if they gave it to a Baltimore reliever when they could vote for a Red Sox starter...the bar is just so high for relievers since they have their own separate award, or at least they used to.
  22. http://www.espn.com/mlb/features/cyyoung Looks like Porcello and Lester in a close battle with Scherzer...
  23. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/in-...a8ff_story.html Horrrific scandal! Read all about it! GW Bush handlers in 2000 and 2004 no longer rich enough to be bundlers in 2016 or even relevant if raising $100,000 or less, but many received priviledges and bought ambassadorships. Shocking stuff, folks.
  24. By that argument, Danks and Latos should still be the back end of the rotation. Clearly, Tim Anderson hasn't improved SS and Lawrie's better than Saladino because the team is 17 games under .500 since May 6, even with the "really good" version of Abreu and Morneau instead of Avi at DH.
  25. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2016 -> 10:13 PM) Bad game for the Sox. We still haven't beaten KC in a series this year. This one is 1-1. There have already been 7 one run games in the season series....Sox are 1-6 in those games. Bullpen.
