Saladino has only played a limited number of games in LF in the minors. There's no way in hell they're bringing up Anderson AND shifting his position on the fly from the only one he's known his entire career. I'm also ready for it to be Leury Garcia or Bourgeois (not sure if he can hold down that position arm-wise) just to KEEP Adam Eaton in RF. Really don't want to see Shuck out there, but Eaton back to CF forces Ventura to choose from Coats/Garcia defensively for RF. Ian Desmond...sigh. Maybe Anderson just follows Beckham, Viciedo, Semien and does end up getting shifted all around. Nothing would be shocking at this point. The Royals have been successful moving Whit Merrifield between OF and 2B doing exactly this, fwiw. But not in the middle of his first week in the major leagues. That would be nuts. Truly.

Here's hoping the injuries to Jackson and Petricka are not used as an excuse...because, as we've highlighted MANY times, the other teams in the division have had much WORSE hardship to deal with than the White Sox. By far.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 03:41 PM) Interesting insight. Sure seems like you know a hell of a lot more than I do on this, lol. It's his job. We even used to have a pinned ASK PTAC section here somewhere at this site for his "medical advice/evaluations," and he also has very accurate diagnoses of pitcher's deliveries/mechanics as well. The rate we're going now, Burdi and Hansen will both be coming out of the pen in September, lol...

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 03:23 PM) Sounds dumb but this is when we find out what type of team this really is. They got back to .500, well within striking distance at 3.5 games. Now they lose Jackson for 6 weeks & know they have no internal re-enforcement coming out of the pen w/ Petricka coming back for the year. June's schedule is pretty daunting & have a good amount of divisional games. They are finally losing players to injury. Every other team in the division has dealt with it already, so now it's time to see what the Sox can do with it. Burdi.

Well, the Twins were in a similar situation as the White Sox last year...in terms of their play and winning percentage, actually more like 4-6 games over .500 into the middle of the season. Buxton was the #1 or #2 prospect across the board and really struggled, surprisingly so. Not so much the strikeouts and low walk rate, but the lack of power that was projected because of that frame he's just growing into. With Anderson, we're not expecting power...but he does need to have an OPS at least in the 600's, not HURT us defensively, take a few walks, steal some bags and hopefully pile up some triples and doubles and let's say 4-6 homers. It would be NICE if he hit RHP with over a 700 OPS, but that's not a requirement for this season. He just has to "look" like he belongs out there and is not overwhelmed to the point where negative thoughts are creeping into his approach and then bleeding over onto the defensive side. So it's not a 30/30 "future superstar" expectation here at least.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:02 AM) I dont like this move at all. The kid needs some more time on the farm, this is a panic move that could really hinder Andersons development. You can't really be surprised that you need a SS when you let your guy walk away and went dumpster diving for a replacement. Just not sure how the Sox were expecting more from the SS position than what they have gotten when they ignored it over the offseason. I would rather have used Sanchez and Saladino at SS for the time being and give Anderson at least another month at AAA. I heard this guy named Ian Desmond was willing to sign for $8 million (and he would have picked the Sox over the Rangers to stay at SS), and also has the ability to play LF/RF. Gee...sounds like someone we could have used. And it would have preserved Anderson's timeframe for September, 2016 arrival. We shall see how it all works, and if Burdi makes it all worth it.

That was his first individual win since last July 25th....a little more than 10 months. Well deserved, bullpen has messed up quite a few of his games.

Pitching match-ups for this weekend (KCR)

Wonder if there's any possibility Ranaudo gets that start? This is getting to be crazy. It seems like we've had more player movement in the first two months than 2013-2015 combined. Never forget Michael Ynoa and Kevan Smith!!! -
Official 6/10/16 Royals @ White Sox Gamethread
caulfield12 replied to clyons's topic in 2016 Season in Review
Ventura and Odor both appealed their suspensions, so he's still scheduled to pitch this Saturday unless the league hands down its decision today. Last year, when he had a 7 game suspension, he also appealed and then eventually dropped it. That was for Adam Eaton. -
Saladino at 649 isn't outhitting him by much, but the defense alone is worth it...range and arm. Plus, at this stage in his career, Tyler's a better baserunner and has equal if not more pop for a PHer.
-
Coats or Hayes don't make sense unless you're going to actually play them. That's where Bourgeois or Leury Garcia do make some sense, if you're not going with Carlos Sanchez. The thing is, the front office making all these decision is not going to put more than one rookie (possibly Anderson) into the line-up at the same time. Not if they're 100% in "win now" mode. http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/splits/_/id/...3/jimmy-rollins Last three years for Rollins. 689 OPS vs. lefties, 671 vs. RHP. 676 total (three year composite)...he's at 624 right now with declining defense. That's not compelling evidence for making him a full-time DH against LHP. For that to be the case, his split should be 800+, at least 750-775 minimum because all he's doing is hitting.

Garcia has a 513 OPS so far this month. A 686 overall OPS just isn't going to cut it. The team average against RHP is 688, at least it was about a week ago, which was 2nd worst in the AL. If your ENTIRE JOB is to hit, and you're still not even as good as the average positional player on an average or slightly below average offensive team at that particular task, then you're not long for the majors.

The irony of this situation is that if we had started out 10-23, then went 20-7: 1) We'd still have Danks puttering along (instead of James Shields) 2) We wouldn't be so close to jettisoning Garcia (Sands already gone) 3) There would be more patience about bringing up Anderson, as it would be to strengthen a weakness rather than a desperation move to spark the offense and create some excitement (possibly to excite the fans as well) 4) Latos would still be on the team with his 6-2 record 5) There wouldn't be nearly as much pressure on Ventura and Hahn 6) Burdi might not have been drafted with the idea he could help the bullpen at the end of this season (see Sale, 2010) So, all in all, these are mostly good/positive things...to have this sense of urgency and immediacy, that they can't let the Indians get out too far ahead of them but need to start winning these AL Central match-ups immediately, starting this weekend against KC. Also, need to start defending our home field advantage.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 9, 2016 -> 10:11 PM) That's right. They and the 91 Brewers are the only two teams to be 15 down at one point yet still have a winning season. Considering half the pitching staff was out with serious injuries or just coming off surgery winning 83 games was amazing. Mark http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HO...le-scores.shtml (Astros were 15-30 in their WS year, 2005) http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HO...le-scores.shtml Not quite the same thing, but the Twins were 11-18 in 2005 and trailing the Sox/Tigers by 9 games in early May. They went on to finish 85-48. St. Louis Cardinals in 2006 were 34-20/42-26 and ended the year at only 83-78 (41-52 finish) but won the division by 1 1/2 games and ended up winning their first World Series since 1982.

UPDATED STANDINGS as of Friday morning CLE +7 KC/DET 3 GB CHW 3 1/2 GB Cleveland tried to give it away at the end of the game last night...Allen had runners (Aoki and S.Smith singled) on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but struck out Robinson Cano to escape the jam. Indians and Royals still in the midst of long road trips. -

Yeah, I actually watched a Ginter start (I think) at the end of 2000...I was also at the game where Jon Rauch supposedly left early or left the clubhouse after he got bombed by the Tigers and ended up getting traded not so soon thereafter by KW. He (Ginter) was either on the US Olympic Team or some kind of All-American list at that time. Never did much at all at the big league level. Biddle Ginter L.Barcelo Kip Wells Fogg Garland Buehrle D.Wright Beirne Myette Rauch ETC. -
Don't think Anderson's coming up. He's kind of cooled off the last 2+ weeks. More likely, Sanchez slots back into that utility role, unless it's Jason Bourgeois instead. Nice to FINALLY see some sense of urgency...with speculation about Burdi possibly joining the pen late in the year as well. Avi Garcia or Alex Avila the next to go, although they might have a difficult time finding a 2nd catcher who can actually hit his weight.
-
Yeah, I remember going to a game in 1985 or 86 that he pitched in Old Comiskey. Was just trying to think of former HoF'er the Sox have brought on board. I guess Bo Jackson counts for the College Football Hall of Fame, right?

Cardinals getting Perez and Dakota Hudson...why is that not a surprise? Still, will take Hansen over Hudson, all things considered. Of course, the last MSU signee the White Sox had, Bobby Thigpen, wasn't too bad. -

http://www.scout.com/mlb/scouting/story/16...e-kyle-lewis-of This was an interesting scouting report, very detailed...the comp after careful thought at the end was a bit more athletic Jermaine Dye. I'm relaxing a bit more because of our 2nd and 3rd picks, and the fact that he's not going to end up in CF. Something about that swing just scares me against the highest level of competition. OTOH, he was one of the best players on the field during the Cape Cod league, with a wooden bat. At any rate, that's the last thing I have to say about this one. We can all watch Collins, Rutherford, Dunn, Perez, Groome and Lewis, and speculate about their futures over the next 3-5 years. And sometimes, the player that takes longer to develop (Mauer, for example, vs. Prior) or now Jonathan Gray with the Rockies...ends up being far and away the best. -

This pick, however, was brilliant. Doesn't matter what happens with him. Will never criticize it. Doesn't matter that OU is my second favorite team of all of college sports. Had he been considered signable, Hansen could have been a top-five-rounds pick as a Colorado high schooler in 2013. He turned down the Rockies as a 25th-rounder and headed to Oklahoma, a move that looked like it could pay off with him being selected as high as No. 1 overall in 2016. Instead he has become the biggest enigma in the Draft, still showing ace-level pure stuff but also an utter lack of control that got him banished to low-leverage relief for five weeks and resulted in an overall 3-5, 5.40 record. Hansen still can light up radar guns like few pitchers in this Draft crop, sitting at 94-97 mph and reaching 99 with some running life. He throws both an upper-70s curveball and a mid-80s slider, with the latter more formidable and featuring late tilt. He even has the makings of at least an average changeup. Hansen has exciting raw stuff, but his red flags are daunting. He has little history of throwing strikes because he struggles to repeat a delivery in which his upper and lower halves are often out of sync and he doesn't stay online toward home plate. There also are worries about his long-term health after he took the summer off and then was shut down in the fall with forearm tightness. www.mlb.com -

Fwiw, I think that was largely because of that stretch where you had Ring, Poreda (two relievers) and then McCulloch and Broadway, who were always perceived as back end of the rotation guys, especially Kyle. Ring and Poreda, in particular, never made much sense. Now if you're taking someone like a Josh Fogg or Nate Jones in later rounds, great...but not the first. -

Hawkins obviously was...but I was referring to first round draft picks for the White Sox, historically. Eddie Pearson or Jeff Liefer maybe? Maybe for Mark Johnson, Kurt Brown, Joel Skinner...catchers. AJ Hinch was second round, ended up going to Stanford if I recall correctly. -
FRI Kennedy vs. Sale SAT Chris Young vs. Q (seems to be the best match-up, ON PAPER) SUN Duffy vs. TBA Who are they going with here? Shields on short rest? Latest on Rodon's injury? Turner? Carroll? Beck? Danish is on the roster right now, would they dare start him Sunday? Standings as of right now: CLE +6 DET/KC 2 1/2 GB CHW 3 GB Cleveland down 1-0 early in Seattle. Tomlin vs. Karns. Statistical oddity: White Sox are exactly even in runs scored and runs allowed, and that corresponds precisely with a .500 record. Btw, when was the last time a starting pitcher with a 6-2 record was DFA'ed in early June of a season?
