  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 28, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) So shedding $26 million in salary and signing a 27 year old power hitting 1B to a 6 year contract at a lesser AAV is...? The problem is there's no Tanaka the next off-season. Most of the available pitching moves are "win now" mode, especially if we select Kolek or Aiken. The Cubs are learning the same lesson...just because they'll have money to spend doesn't mean they can find the right player to spend it on.
  2. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ May 27, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) Some dude named Abreu I give Hahn a lot more credit for pulling the trigger than Paddy. Anyone could see Abreu's talent. It's finding undervalued guys like Alexei Ramirez and Tadahito Iguchi that's MUCH more difficult. Plus, I'm still not over Nestor Molina and disappointed that we put any faith in him, Zach Stewart or Jeff Marquez ever amounting to anything. Keenyn Walker, too. We only know that name because he was the first player drafted that particular year.
  3. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ May 28, 2014 -> 05:14 AM) After 1565 MLB plate appearances, Ben Revere hit a HR. Over the fence and everything! Please hurry up and sign Jeff Keppinger. That will make the rest of our match-ups with the Twins more interesting. Sorry to see Morneau having such a great comeback season with the Rockies. That must sting a bit, but who could have predicted it after how poorly he played for the Pirates down the stretch?
  4. Except that's not exactly the whole story. It's not like we traded Alex Rios in order to sign Jose Abreu. We needed to get younger and more cost-controlled. It's like saying we traded Rios to bring back Lindstrom and pay for Downs, Paulino and Keppinger. You can twist it around any way you would like, right? Now if we spent $150-175 on Tanaka, then you could have me convinced that trading Rios was absolutely imperative to make it work. We also shed Santos, Peavy's deal, AJ's deal, Konerko's deal, let Buehrle go, Crain and Floyd, etc.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 28, 2014 -> 07:12 AM) Then make it. --- You can't because it's an absolutely ridiculous argument. He did nothing to me other than pitch like a middle reliever. I like/liked Reed. I honestly think, given his repertoire, he'd be better served in the rotation instead of the bullpen. The Sox bullpen has not been horrendous - have you watched games or seen the numbers the bullpen has put up, or are you still basing this off the first two weeks of the year? Greg, I'm pretty sure that if Adam Dunn puts up .275/.400/.500 next year for Texas or Houston or someone, you'd say that you gave him a B for his time with the Sox and whoever is currently playing for the White Sox would get a D. With only two pitches? By that argument, Petricka should be re-converted into a starter again. Or Webb.
  6. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 27, 2014 -> 05:07 PM) The return for Alex Rios is wearing #79. 859 vs. 908 OPS The problem is that the return from Avisail Garcia and DeAza is not producing much of anything at the moment, so it's a net wash (this season).
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 27, 2014 -> 11:53 PM) 2 outs with their best hitter up. I'd give that honor to Brantley, overall, for his entire season of work.
  8. Thought that Bourn play on Konerko was definitely going to come back and bite them. Great outing this time by Belisario. Luckily, he didn't have to face Brantley. Also, amazing job by Petricka.
  9. Who is Harrelson more upset with these days, Downs or DeAza? He wasn't exactly happy with Carroll, either, but at least he survived for 3 innings without giving up a run.
  10. Does Ventura realize Chisenhall is now 7 for 13 against lefties this year? SHEESH. For the last 7 years, Downs has averaged around a 2.3 ERA....but he's gasoline on a fire this season. Bad throw by Adam Eaton. Bad signing by Hahn.
  11. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 27, 2014 -> 09:59 PM) If Chris Sale wants to go 5-0 he needs runs in this half-inning Sale can't get the win regardless. It's the official scorer's discretion.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 27, 2014 -> 09:53 PM) 33 hits allowed in last 15.1 innings It's quite sad there's not a better option. Obviously, they're not convinced Hanson is ready or will ever be ready again. One bullet dodged. Can we pull off the magic act for 2 more innings?
  13. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 27, 2014 -> 09:16 PM) Confederate Prisoner of War Camp in Georgia, haha
  14. At least Chris Sale has only thrown 40 pitches today, so it's essentially a side/bullpen session.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 27, 2014 -> 05:56 PM) It wasn't a gamble, he was the team's 4th starter. Johnson was, then Paulino. Not that it matters now.
  16. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 27, 2014 -> 07:51 PM) so what, how long until they decide to just can Sale? 30 min? an hour? With his current situation, I think anything over 40-45 minutes. Obviously, he's going to TRY TO talk his way into going out there again...but with all the pitching injuries around baseball, in what started as a throwaway season, they'd be crazy to push him. What's the temperature now?
  17. Never should have started this one. At least it will bail Ramirez and Viciedo out a bit. Unfortunately, they'll probably slog through 5 or 6 and Carroll will get bombed.
  18. Then, theoretically, they could use a magnetic levitation train...but that would require U.S. train technology to jump 20-30 years into the future.
  19. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 27, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) Do you really believe any of this, caulfield? I'm perfectly willing to revisit this in August. Maybe the errors don't mean anything and the White Sox are 100% committed to making Anderson the starting SS after Ramirez, and aren't 100% believers in Semien's ability there. To make ANY kind of determination, I'd have to go back and watch video on all those 20+ errors to see what's going on. For that to happen, though, he's going to have to be 750+ OPS bat in the minors, at a minimum.
  20. Marco Paddy. Still waiting to see some more concrete signs of his contributions.
  21. QUOTE (scs787 @ May 27, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Using ERA to appeal to the back of the baseball card guys, and FIP to appeal to the saber guys.....(I know neither are the end all measuring stick but you get the point). Addison Reed-4.18 ERA/4.62 FIP Daniel Webb- 2.39/4.19 Jake Petricka- 1.57/4.06 Zach Putnam- 1.64/3.14 Then there's Lindstrom who sabermetrically is only slightly worse than Reed @ 3.32/4.68. Saying Reed would be the 4th or 5th best reliever is not that crazy to say. You would have been better off comparing Addison Reed to the rest of MLB closers. Comparing his numbers to White Sox middle relievers...you might as well compare Reed to Belisario's numbers this week as a closer, right? FWIW, we can legitimately make the argument the Sox would be .500 or 2 games over with Reed, but they're not truly contending unless the wheels completely fall off the DET pitching staff.
  22. Right now, he's on a pace for SEVENTY errors. That's ridiculous. I don't care if it's the worst manicured infield in the Carolina League with the most inept home scorekeeper. And wasn't Viciedo basically benched/kicked off the national team one of those years in Cuba...at 17 or 18? It's not like he had a tremendous amount of experience before age 18-19 playing 3B. And I quote, 'He was an outfielder before,' manager Ozzie Guillen said. 'This kid was in right field in Cuba and he never played third base; he told me that. He told (bench coach) Joey (Cora) that last year."
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 27, 2014 -> 07:53 AM) There is some real silly in this thread. 1. People want to move Tim Anderson off shortstop right now? You can't be serious. He's been in pro ball less than a year and he was KNOWN coming to be UNUSUALLY raw. Not just JuCo raw mind you, but, didn't focus on baseball until has last year in college. He's all tools and very little skills. The idea of abandoning ship on him now is just ridiculous. 2. While W-L numbers for minor league affiliates may perhaps give some indications on the very ends - and the Sox system is at the bad end now - even that is very, very limited in value. You don't even have the rookie affiliates playing yet, or DSL, or guys injured, or more than 1.5 months of play. Not to mention every org has some clubs loaded up with career minor leaguers. Don't read into this. How much do you want to bet they don't/won't allow him to get over 50 errors at SS? When was the last time the White Sox did that with any prospect in the minors? Viciedo was equally raw and how much time did it take before they moved him off 3B? As long as they believe the defensive side won't have a negative impact on his offensive game...they'll be patient, but only to a point. Anderson's biggest potential value comes with his speed and bat...on the offensive side, just like Hawkins.
  24. Just glad he didn't blow out one of his knees with that jump down from the stage.
