  1. Hope we're not back to "tip your cap" time again with the offense. At least Abreu and Eaton provide hope/spark. Remember when Dexter Fowler was the latest "toolsy outfield" prospect? Wonder if Buxton will live up to the hype? His teammate Hicks has definitely had his struggles, as well as some flashes or glimpses of potential.
  2. Good at-bat by Moises "High" Sierra (Chris Berman impression) He has to be named after Moises Alou, right?
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ May 16, 2014 -> 06:55 PM) We don't score til they score. (watched those dvds a couple times) The best was when he was making fun of the expression on Backe's face when he was out there on the mound.
  4. Flowers isn't long for .300. Viciedo just slipped under, Alexei's on the way.
  5. QUOTE (flavum @ May 16, 2014 -> 06:51 PM) 42 pitches. Quintana battles, but he hasn't really dominated a game yet this season. I'm not sure if we'll ever see him go on another run like his first 9-10 big league starts. That was pretty amazing. Nobody had good scouting reports on him at the time. Hoes before Bros.
  6. A long ways removed from the days of Biggio/Beltran/Berkman/Bagwell. Heck, Hunter Pence.
  7. Now that Katie Upton has been eliminated from consideration for her moustache, lol. Isn't Christy Turlington married to Edward Burns still?
  8. Surprised nobody has attempted to get Cooper's take on the top 3-4 arms (including Hoffman). It would have been hard for him to suppress his opinion/s. Or he would have made some smart-alecky comment about not having time to do both draft scouting and manage a big league pitching staff with a revolving door bullpen.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2014 -> 06:01 PM) We don't have a team in Bristol anymore. Oops, that's right, the Pirates now. Almost a 20 year partnership there. I think it was the Tigers before. Fathom, Anderson and Hawkins must be listening, they both responded with hits. Now, if only Barnum and May would join suit.
  10. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 16, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) There was a FanGraphs article not long ago about how the Sox were basically the one team in baseball that this didn't apply to. I wish that happened this year. Keppinger and Paulino are basically irrelevant now...but it would have been interesting to see what a full season with Sale, Gillaspie, Beckham, Eaton, Avisail and Nate Jones all at 100% could have accomplished in the standings. It has definitely opened up the playing time for Viciedo, and also taught us that Marcus Semien and Erik Johnson weren't quite ready. Rienzo's been holding his own, and Noesi has been intriguing at times.
  11. 16 walks and 36 K's for Hawkins on the year. Much better ratio. Would love to see him finish 2014 at .260 or higher.
  12. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/richar...p;vkey=news_mlb You can start making some arguments about Hahn nearing the top ten now among MLB GM's. The current thinking is that Beane is back to #1. It's pretty hard to argue with that, even though he hasn't won anything YET. Then you have Andrew Friedman, Mozeliak in St. Louis, Brian Sabean in SF, Daniels in Texas (the glow is off a bit recently) and Dombrowski with the Tigers. Epstein and Cashman are extremely difficult to rate, for obvious reasons. Walt Jocketty (Reds/Cardinals) and Frank Wren (Braves) are probably at the back end of the Top 10. Antonetti with the Indians is getting a lot of rave reviews as well. Then you have Colletti (Dodgers) and Huntington (Pirates) as well. 1. Friedman 2. Beane 3. Mozeliak 4. Daniels (could have gone either way with 4/5....he was THIS close two times, but Sabean went for almost a decade without results after the Bonds years) 5. Sabean 6. Dombrowski (hard for me to rank him higher with so much money to throw around, and hasn't won it all with the Tigers) 7. Cashman 8. Cherington (Red Sox) To in my mind, hard to argue against Hahn's body of work (so far) as legitimately meriting a 9-13 position. Obviously, we won't know until 2-3 years (at least from now) where he REALLY belongs, but it's interesting to think about at least. Ten years ago, Terry Ryan of the Twins would have been in the Top 3-5.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 13, 2014 -> 08:10 PM) Um, Seth Smith??? Well obviously Smith OPS-wise, I mean he's a great platoon hitter but not an MVP candidate (that anyone has heard of).
  14. Ron Necciai got 27 strikeouts in a class D minor league game in 1952. With Bristol, now one of our short-season teams. Don't think we want Sale to get K's on wild pitches just to face more hitters to strike out on wild pitches, lol. Or pitch into the 10th.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 16, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Seriously, we need to trade for the guy who made contact. Robby Price. Not sure if we need another infielder at the moment. 11 K's and an infield ground out. 68 pitches through 4. Guess he's going 5?
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 16, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) Fun movie, very respectful of the originals. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was flat, but nbd to me Studios seem to be struggling to break out a new male star. Taylor Kitsch bombed in Battleship and John Carter. Charlie Hunnam was decent in Pacific Rim but didn't register in the U.S. Aaron Paul's Need for Speed was barely noticed. Kit Harington in Pompeii. Andrew Garfield hasn't exactly set the world on fire as Spider-Man. Better as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 9m Estimates heard today on number of votes of support Rob Manfred has to be next MLB Commish: 21/22. Needs 23. Strong favorite at this point. He used to work for the Blue Jays, right? Or the Mariners? One of those two, I'm pretty sure. With Alderson?
  18. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2...shifts/9010489/ Good article on the proliferation of defensive shifts this season. One problem, is that technically they're only counting shifts when there are three players to the right of the 2nd base bag for lefties and three to the left for righties...so there are lots of times when the player is "close" to being in a shift but not technically being counted for statistical purposes. And there's no simplistic way to account for individual players shading a couple of feet in one direction or another, like the Tigers work on with Vizquel as their infield coordinator.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2014 -> 07:36 PM) This image is from a couple years ago but you inspred me to find it. Herm Schneider should just bring that graph/chart into his next contract negotiation. Or the one about the fewest days on the DL for Sox pitchers over the past decade, etc.
  20. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 15, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) Way too early to be speculating on catchers for next year. Well, then it's way too early to be giving up on Johnson, Semien and Davidson...but that's doesn't mean it won't be speculated about. What have you done for me lately? The fact is, Smith is the best "advanced" catcher in our system after Phegley, and is likely to get a shot next year in the spring, depending on what progress Phegley makes defensively and how Nieto looks offensively. They'll probably want to give Nieto a full year as the starter at Birmingham. Sure, a million things could happen between now and then. Micah Johnson could be in LF or CF. Nobody really knows.
  21. 822 OPS for Kevan Smith the last 10 games....around 750 for the season. Will turn 26 in the middle of the year. Has an outside chance to push Phegley for the back-up catcher's spot next season.
