  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) Parker is arguably the best freshman that has ever suited up for Duke. Wiggins is an extreme talent. Unfortunately for us the tourney is a fickle thing and any team can lose at any time. Jason Williams. Grant Hill. Christian Laettner. Danny Ferry. Bobby Hurley. Nice job of contenting the final 3. Dawkins' first NCAA appearance in six years. NIT title two years ago. Patience paid off. First Sweet 16 since the Mike Montgomery days.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) Olt's ceiling is way higher than Connor. The only thing that stopped Olt were the concussion problems. If not for that, the kid never leaves Texas. That, combined with the vision problems...and Beltre, of course. I suppose they could have moved him to 1B.
  3. QUOTE (staxx @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) I don't think that he was implying he had Mike Trout potential. I think he was trying to make the point that Garcia can be a franchise-changer for the white sox in the way that Trout did for the Angels. Obviously not on the same level, but still significant. It's like comparing Trout to Mickey Mantle before the knee injuries, DiMaggio, Willie Mays, etc. Garcia has a TON of raw talent, but so does Viciedo, for that matter...but can they refine it into actual results and statistics on the back of the baseball card, that's the only important question to be answered.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) The greatest center fielder ever playing right field has quite an attitude problem http://m.espn.go.com/mlb/story?storyId=10658691 Nope, you've got it backwards. The greatest RF ever playing CF. And the White Sox had an attitude problem for 2/3rd's of last season...they didn't seem to care about playing the game in a fundamentally-correct way, same as Puig. The main difference was talent level/ability. The worst thing you can say about something is that you don't care about it...it's boring....apathy/malaise. That's the first time since 1983 I've completely tuned out a White Sox season after the first two or three months, with the exception of the trading deadline. At least Puig, love him or hate him, causes SOME sort of reaction from nearly everyone. If Mattingly can win his battle with the front office/organization to control Puig and if Ventura can turn around the defense/fundamentals, they both deserve major kudos.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 21, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Keppinger expects to start the season on the DL. So that opens up the door for Leury Garcia or possibly Semien. Sounds like he might be out for quite some time...at least most of April.
  6. QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) Agreed. Much rather see Petricka make the team. What are the options/rights for Cleto? I would rather have him than Veal on the roster. Or Petricka, for that matter, if it means losing Cleto. I guess with Boggs, if he doesn't make the team out of spring training (guaranteeing the $1.1 million contract), he'll become a free agent or possibly agree to stay at Charlotte if he's comfortable and the Sox think they can fix whatever ails him. Then there's Webb...whatever they do, please don't bring Dylan Axelrod north with the club as the long-man. Anything but THAT.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:22 AM) The quotes made it seem like Quintana had a crippling porn addiction that kept causing clubhouse chaos. Thought that was Swisher... Quintana went from 20 runs in 6 IP to 20 in 11 now...almost cut his 30.00 ERA in half.
  8. I would think the Astros with Nolan Ryan in charge would definitely be tempted to take local product Kolek, since they just drafted a polished university hurler in Appel last year. Is there a "will sign for cheaper" guy the Marlins might be targeting at #1? Like what the Astros worked out with Correa before the draft? http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/fri...r-aces-stumble/ TCU LHP Brandon Finnegan moving up into the Top 10
  9. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-stephe...2#axzz2wlG9wGQ8 Nice informative story about Stephen F. Austin team in the LA Times. Sounds like a team almost as fun to be around as Florida Gulf Coast. With only Dayton, we're basically left with SFA, Mercer/Tennessee and Stanford as the only remaining underdogs to battle on. And Gonzaga, I suppose.
  10. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...p?P=rinku-singh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Dollar_Arm It's coming out in May, it's going to be a Disney movie, so it's going to have that feel like "The Rookie" (Dennis Quaid) or Miracle or whatever, but it's based on a true life story. I remember reading about the two Indian cricket players signed by the Pirates, but here it is on film. Something like a cross between Slumdog Millionaire and another minor league baseball movie named "Sugar" about a Dominican kid dealing with life in the Midwest. Singh looks like he has a shot, he put up decent numbers in the South Atlantic League. Still with the Pirates organization. Has anyone ever seen him pitch? It would be pretty amazing to see the first Indian player in the majors...Bud Selig would approve, with his globalization push.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 09:52 PM) Black List getting very interesting At first I liked Scandal more, but that's just too over the top now. Spader's fun to watch in his quasi-villain with redeeming qualities role.
  12. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) Shaw is hot... Are you including Root in that? Has to be. At first I was disappointed when they wrote Taraji Henson out of the show, but I've grown to like Shaw. It's kind of like the huge change this season with NCIS...Ziva David leaving and replaced by Emily Wickersham. I just started watching about a month ago and quickly caught up to present. Really have grown to enjoy it, especially the idea that Root is actually not the enemy and seeing where things lead from here. Also liked the background episode when they showed the first guy to work with Harold and how he came across Jim Caviezel's character. I'm pretty sure that Shahi is at least half Iranian. Just watched this week's show. DECIMA and Vigilance....Root is off the chain this week...she need to be more prominently featured because she plays off so well against the drollness (moribund, in the words of Bill Raftery) of Finch and Shah.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) I wonder what big time job Amaker ends up at, done a great job there He's going to have to think long and hard THIS time, instead of jumping around too quickly like he did with Seton Hall and then Michigan. It's amazing if you go back just ten years....I was thinking of all the "hot" coaches and where they've gone. Gary Waters, Quin Snyder, Paul Hewitt, Bruce Weber, Chris Lowery, Matt Doherty, Mike Davis, Billy Gillispie (well, a bit more recent), Jim O'Brien, Stan Heath, Larry Eustachy, Buzz Peterson, Ernie Kent, etc. BC and Marquette are two openings, and I think Wake Forest? Indiana has a good shot at being open after next year. I wonder if they would finally go after Alford? He's probably content to stay in LA at this point, especially after he became a bit toxic at Iowa. Shaka Smart and Mark Few stayed put. Stevens left Butler.
  14. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 09:54 PM) YETH! Is that "yeah" or YETI/Bigfoot? http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger...ience-with-puig Mattingly already losing patience with Puig this season. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dodgers-retur...-072221837.html Puig Destroyer needs a new song...."Run 'Til You're Out" or "F--k the Cutoff Man!"
  15. Hey Well stated. I agree that Olt can play defense and he has proven that. There is n ot any reason to send him down. As a rebuilding team, you must play a rookie when he is ready and let him learn via experience. Olt already spent a year at AAA. If they send him down it would be a financial savings so that they get more in a trade. I say risk he is the long term solution to the third base problem. Baez and Bryant should be the left fielder and right fielder respectivly. ALOMAR (Almora) IN CENTER AND YOU HAVE YOUR STARTERS TO GO WITH rIZZO AT FIRST, aLCANTARA OR Villaneva at 2nd with Castro at SS and Olt at third. Play them soon at quit trying to save money while it costs the cubs more in lost revenue in sold tickets, and TV attendance. Cub fans are tired of ownership pretending they are making choices for the best interest of the team vs the owners wallet. Sound familiar? Some Cubs' idiot wants to move Baez from 2B/SS, well, just because he wants to see him play NOW. If the White Sox had a bunch of prospects in Winston-Salem and Birmingham, that same fan would be asking for Hawkins to be starting for the team in 2015. At least no mention of Soler, haha. There's a flaw in his plan. Must have prospects at every position!!! Of course, this fan probably doesn't have any plan to address the Cubs' ongoing pitching issues, what to do with Smardizja and Edwin Jackson, etc. And moving players all over the place (Bryant in the outfield, Baez at 2B/SS/3B) is very reminiscent of what happened with the White Sox being in "win now" mode and putting Beckham and Viciedo through numerous position changes. Not wise. Olt's an interesting case, a lot like what the White Sox are dealing with Gillaspie as a position holder for 2+ months, although Olt was once a big-time prospect and probably still has a tad more value than Conor on the trade market.
  16. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,0,469680.story White Sox won't sell Adam Eaton short....if your article comes up at premium/digital, I just load the title into google and usually don't have a problem. Maybe that's changed. FWIW, Cooper said that Quintana was working on his change. Seems to be no physical/injury concerns at all. "His arm angle was a bit higher, and that's what we have to get it back to," Cooper said. "We know why. He was practicing his changeup, and he feels like he has to get higher on it."It was a visible difference (from last year), so we're working on him. But he's smart. He sees stuff, he knows stuff and he immediately goes to work."
  17. I don't understand all the love for Ennis, either. In terms of pro ability, Grant and Fair are probably the guys. His poor shooting/shot selection was the reason they were behind for most of the 2nd half. In the end, I don't think they made a single three pointer and Dayton had 6-7. He's effective at driving the ball to the hoop and getting fouled...but he's not a standstill jump shooter. The announcers said the defense was hedging to force him to shoot from the outside late, daring him.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 06:21 PM) You can't declare a best coach in the conference if you can't look further back than today. College Bball has ebbs and flows of talent for most programs so you are right I don't agree with being that short sighted. Well, there's no way to argue that Izzo is the best coach in Big 10 history, right after Knight. Probably a better coach in many aspects (personality, temperament, consistency) but not the overall brilliance and 3 National Championships.
  19. Man, that Rivard dude can shoot when he's open. Harvard lost that brief 62-60 lead in seconds...seems like they just got swallowed up by the moment. Michigan State just seems to that uncanny ability to remain calm and poised now.
  20. SDSU has their typical good defense, but not quite enough consistent offensive threats to go much further. Thames is good, but they're lacking that superstar presence they had in Kawhi Leonard. Fwiw, that OSU-Gonzaga was one of the ugliest games in recent history, like the World Cup Final or Louisville and Syracuse first halves today. Not getting any good games today. Bit of a letdown.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Like Mattas conference title in 2012 with a final four. 3 straight sweet sixteen, a conference tournament title last year. What kind of recruiting class does Matta have coming in next year? Matta also never maximized talent at Xavier and Butler. It's not like he had a NPOY there or anything. 5 big ten titles and four conference tourney titles in 9 years. Since he joined the big Ten nobody has more. But I guess it's way in the past when thinking about 2012. It is if you're a White Sox fan. Once again, I know his record. I'm talking about NOW, today. We'll just have to agree to disagree. There's the big picture and the smaller frame within that bigger picture. For example, on paper, Iowa fans can point to McCaffrey completely rebuilding three programs (UNC Greensboro and Siena) and where the program was four years ago...or they can look at losing 7 of their last 8 and choking/losing so many close games over the last two years. As far as Matta goes, I meant he should get credit for Lickliter's success...75% of it. And then Stevens went on and won with Lickliter's players, but some would say Brad Stevens is the best basketball coach (NBA and college) alive today.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) Why are Hawk and Stone fawning over the Twins right now? Byron Buxton....maybe Hawk also doesn't know Sano's out for the season because he was out golfing and doesn't follow things too closely unless we're actually playing that team and he can hob knob with them around the batting cage.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) You'd pick the guy who hasn't won a conference tourney? Ok. I'm guessing you haven't actually looked up the coaches resumes. Yes, I know about the past. If you went by that, you'd pick Izzo, then Matta. I'm just talking about NOW...the past couple of years. And also how Beilein maximized all of the talent at West Virginia. For awhile, it looked like Matta was going to consistently bring in Conley/Oden type of talent...like Calipari. His recruiting has fallen off just a bit. And sure, Matta did the same thing at Butler...then Lickliter succeeded with his players.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) Jones, Belisario, Lindstrom and Webb are clearly above him. From there, you need a long reliever, which would be Petricka IMO. Didn't they already send him out of camp? Guess it also depends if they want to keep both Downs and Veal. Don't quite understand why they don't want to get some youngsters more experience unless Veal's looking more like the 2012 version than last year's shadow of his former self.
  25. Right now, if I wanted to win one game or one tourney though...I'd pick Beilein over Izzo. By a nose.
