May as well covert Casper Wells to a RP

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 03:48 PM) TCTC The capacity to compel Because that has worked so well with DeAza, Ramirez, Viciedo, Keppinger, Rios and Flowers/Gimenez this year on defense. Heck, surprised they couldn't compel Paulie to come back early from his back injury....the Hermie Schneider Vulcan Death Grip Compulsion Back Treatment. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 03:45 PM) How is asking someone what they have turn into the other guy begging to go in? How is but more surprised that Wells was getting ready to throw and not just delivering a message to the bullpen that not showing that it was his idea to pitch, that he volunteered rather than being asked. Maybe begged would be pushing it, but with how our team has sucked raw eggs, it's nice to think that someone wants to contribute and help out. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) He begged? Bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen looked at him and asked, "What do you got?"Thigpen was surprised when the outfielder started listing off his pitches. He was not surprised that Wells had those pitches, but more surprised that Wells was getting ready to throw and not just delivering a message to the bullpen. At least someone has TWTW. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 03:36 PM) Sale unless the rest of the roster dictates Crain. Or he has the start that falls on Sunday or Hahn/Reinsdorf think maybe it's not such a good idea to send him to out to pitch yet again (he can still be on the roster, then be pulled or they can ask that he not be used) when he keeps throwing 120+ pitches in meaningless games as it is.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 12:00 PM) It would be interesting and compelling to see him blow out his arm like Canseco did, wouldn't it? Then we would need another bench player. Oh that would be awesome. Rich and Compelling He's the one that ASKED, practically BEGGED, to pitch. I think he knows the risks. A bulky, steroids-bloated slugger vs. Casper Wells, almost the same, pretty much. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) I'd love a platoon at 1B of Morneau and Viciedo if you're trying to compete. The obvious problem is that Viciedo's never going to develop or take the next step going that route. If we had Granderson, Rios and Hunter Pence in the OF, sure. But how likely is that to happen? The Mariners tried this approach, as did the Indians (Bourne/Swisher/Reynolds)...with varying results. There's no reason we can't or couldn't do it, but WILL we? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) WTF does this even mean? It means that he said the game threads should be better, where is he? So at least I can't be blamed for the lack of participation there...thought the mods would want to pick up the slack. PUIG 2/2, 2 more stolen bases in his first two at-bats, up to .429. Now 3/3, a triple (FIRST CAREER) that fell in front of our old friend, Delmon Young, a noted defensive stalwart. Dodgers only 4 GB of the Padres now. .434 He could go 0 for 116 and still be hitting exactly .200.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) First, knowing J4L this is all going exactly to his plan. There's no frustration on his behalf in regards to the team, believe me. He masterfully threw out the bait and sat in the corner twiddling his thumbs awaiting the bites. However, as one of those 10yr veterans of Soxtalk this thread is an example of EXACTLY the time of atmosphere that existed in the "golden age" (definitely from 2003-2004). Reflecting back, I recall Old Roman, BMR, Cluer, Beastly (or WSC), JimH constantly instigating trouble and riling up everyone. There was no message board decor or rules, it was literally the equivalent of a youtube comments section. Also, consider that 10-11 years ago when this site began most of the active members were in the 16-25 age range. I'm sure this same age range is represented across all message boards. Most within this group were either in school or just finishing and had the available free time to regularly post. Now, consider a decade passing; these same people have careers and families draining their lives and free time. I was 18 when I joined here, and having just started college my time was devoted to not only following the White Sox and our minor league system, but those of other teams. Enough to where, when draft time came around I could have probably created my own Top 30 draft board. Now, I'm practically baseball retarded outside the White Sox. With my career and other obligations I'm lucky to post once a week. This issue isn't on the Soxtalk moderators, really. Through the years an unexpected incident would arise that would ban a few people, and as a result new rules would form. It's the natural progression of any site. It probably helped this place survive so long. I've always felt, the chat room is where the fun is. I remember numerous nights of past years where several of us would be up long after the end of a game. Unfortunately, I haven't been around to promote it and I don't believe others have had the motivation, either. Personally, I'm content with Soxtalk. I still check this board every day even if I don't post, and I'm sure other old-timers do the same. There's always a new influx of posters to replace those that have since stopped contributing. Without it, there'd just be Fathom and ss2k5 talking to themselves. But as always, f*** WSI. That sentiment hasn't changed over time. Well, said. Last year was a lot of fun until the end of the season, and it was totally unexpected and a breath of fresh air. Still remember how exciting it was in June when we added YOUK and he was getting the GW RBI every other game and then Liriano and Myers. Oh, well. That said, going 9-24 or whatever the current string is going to destroy the morale of any fanbase or messageboard, especially coming off the disappointing conclusion from the previous season and then adding Jeff Keppinger during offseason. This was bound to happen eventually, that the Sox would have to bottom out. Can't imagine Marlins or Astros fan boards would be much fun these days...especially Miami, or the Brewers, with the Braun issue overhanging. Maybe the Cubs and Astros fans have more players on their farm to look forward to, but everyone's basically in the same boat. You can add the Mariners too, although they're bringing up some more youngsters (Franklin, Miller, Zunino, plus they have Hultzen and T. Walker) that are reinvigorating some interest in the Pacific NW. Double trouble Posted by scotgregor on Sat, 06/29/2013 - 14:39 Well, that was fun. Kidding. To be truthful, Friday's White Sox-Indians doubleheader was some of the worst baseball I've seen in two decades on the beat. I still remember the twinbill against the Boston Red Sox in August of 2007, when the White Sox dropped both games and were outscored 21-4. And, if I remember correctly, former Sox manager Ozzie Guillen apologized to the media afterward for having to witness the carnage. I'm sure Ozzie was happy he wasn't in the dugout Friday afternoon, Friday night and early Saturday morning. It was a long, long day, and the White Sox lost Game 1 of a doubleheader to Cleveland 19-10 and lost Game 2 9-8. "It seems like when things go bad, they go bad," Adam Dunn said. "Real bad." Well said. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) I expect Ramirez, Rios, Crain, Thorton and Lindstrom to be dealt sooner rather than later. If Peavy can prove healthy right before the deadline, I expect him gone too. He may be one of those guys dealt right at the July 31st deadline. Guys that we are stuck with: Dunn and Keppinger (Barf!) We're hardly stuck with Keppinger. As mentioned already, the Yankees have many reasons to be interested. He's probably been our best hitter (along with Dunn) over the last month or so. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:52 PM) Those definitely are numbers. Shouldn't you be getting J4L out of bed and posting in the GameThread?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Rosenthal talking about Rios being a fit for the Pirates. http://msn.foxsports.com/video/MLB?vid=035...5d-d860f4161446 They have some exciting prospects in their system that could be a fit (obviously not Taillon). Giants, Reds and Rangers (if Cruz is suspended) all legit possibilities. With Bruce, Choo and Rios, that would be something...Heisey, X. Paul and Derrick Robinson aren't quite good enough to get it done. Peavy back to the Padres would be amusing... -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:17 PM) Nice to see that Jacob Turner's looking like a good MLB pitcher Tell Greg instead of complaining about not retaining the services of AJ or Buehrle, we would have been a lot better off with Francisco Liriano (Coop didn't fix him). Hopefully he can power the Marlins past us in the standings. Half joking. Still worried that Sale's going to overthrow his FB out of frustration and end up hurting himself. He's trying to win games by himself, and Chris throwing 95-97 hasn't been effective as at 90-94. Marlins with a walk-off GS to inch closer to the SOX, 6-2 over the FRIARS. Tigers had bases loaded in the 7th with no outs against the Rays and didn't score. K, forceout by Austin Jackson, Hunter tried to bunt and then was retired. Wil Myers (Dale Murphy Jr.) fever taking over in Tampa.

Wilkins off to a good start in AAA so far. Sanchez is now over .240 but still only has his OPS barely over 600. For a contact player also know for his "walkability," he still has a long ways to go before he can be given consideration by anyone other than Phil Rogers for a starting spot at SS/2B in the big leagues. Only 22 walks vs. 47 K's (last year he had more BB's than walks for much of the season) and 11 SB vs. 5 CS. Still has a smaller SLG% than OBP, incredibly.
-
Indians and Tigers will finally be tied for first place (only 6 games over) if both early scores hold up today.
-
Depends on who Leyland prefers, the bullpen guy in Crain or Sale. It's going to be one of those numbers games and looking at starters vs. relievers for the teams that are only going to have one representative. A couple of weeks ago, Alex Rios MIGHT have gotten some consideration, but it's down to those two now.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 07:07 AM) So Robin sat Viciedo down to discipline him. What is SoxTalk's view of that? My guess it's either 1) the seat was too comfortable & Ozzie would have made him sit on pins or on the floor in everyone else's spit, 2) Robin, who has mentally checked out, forgot to put him in the lineup & made the discipline part up later to cover for himself , 3) WHY THE f*** DO YOU SIT THE PLAYERS YOU NEED TO DEVELOP MOST?!?!?! At least for Viciedo, it did seem to work...he made 2 great plays in the field and went 3/4, I think at his age, sitting and getting individual attention from Ventura was what he needed the most at that time and place. Now with DeAza, Ramirez, Rios and Flowers/Gimenez, it's a situation where 1) we don't have replacements or 2) they're veteran players who we don't need to invest as much time in "coaching up," although some will still argue Flowers MIGHT be part of the future in 2014. Keppinger was just getting overexposed, isn't an everyday 2B anymore and a lot of people felt he was playing through injuries, too. For example, Dunn deliberately blew through a McEwing stop sign and scored. That wouldn't be tolerated by many managers when the team was down 14-9. And we know how Ramirez hasn't missed a single inning all season yet, but has become the poster child for everything that's wrong with the team, along with Flowers and DeAza (even though his stats look decent). -

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 08:03 AM) If you can at least get two or three solid contributors back for 2014 in firesale trades, and then use the 40+ million in open salary space to sign the right guys in free agency, it's possible this team could compete as soon as next year. I guess it depends on what the owners want to do. Either completely cut costs and go with nothing but rookies in 2014, which is easily one of the worst things to do in this situation, or keep the team salary around the same as it has been and make aggressive pitches at some of the top FA's (McCann, Morneau, Morales, Morse, Hart, Granderson, Pence, Utley, etc.). McCann is REALLY struggling against LHP'ers and with injuries. I think he's reached the point where the dollars and years will be too risky, based on his name/reputation moreso than the current reality of him. Pence is exactly the kind of player we DO need, the anti-DeAza, but not on the downside AS MUCH as say an Erstad or Kotsay. Utley's playing too well right now and will be prohibitively expensively. I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up staying in Philly. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 07:58 AM) Name a team that has bottomed out, traded their best players and were back in contention in 2 or 3 years? This isn't the NBA. Draft picks rarely provide immediate help. The Sox will be lucky, incredibly lucky,if the guy they pick next June , even if they get the first pick,is really contibuting in 2016. It has to be a collegiate pitcher or reliever. Ventura/Thomas, from a hitting perspective, are once-a-generation anomalies. Beckham got up to the big leagues about as fast as possible for the present day-and-age. Chris Sale, obviously, fits here too. Mark Buehrle, based on minor league results, not draft position. But look at someone like Porcello, who is still struggling...a lot like Jon Garland, too good at too young an age for the minors but not refined enough for success at the big league level. Then you have the relievers who move in a hurry, guys like Scott Radinsky, Boone Logan, Santos, maybe Daniel Webb will be the next. -
1. Carlos Rodon, LHP, North Carolina State: The Wolfpack are headed to the College World Series, and Rodon is a big reason why. Even after starting slowly, the big lefty has gone 9-2 with a 3.19 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings. There is almost universal consensus that Rodon is the early choice to be No. 1 in 2014. 2. Tyler Beede, RHP, Vanderbilt: Beede, who didn't sign as a first-rounder in 2011, is a Golden Spikes Award finalist thanks to a 14-1 record, a 2.32 ERA and a .187 batting average against. 3. Alex Jackson, C, Rancho Bernardo HS, Calif.: A two-time participant in the Under Armour game, Jackson has some serious raw power from the right side and is a good leader with an accurate arm. 4. Touki Toussaint, RHP, Coral Springs Christian HS, Fla.: This Florida prepster is very athletic with a ton of arm strength, using a clean delivery to fire fastballs that can touch the mid-90s to go along with a hard downer curve. (cool name!) 5. Aaron Nola, RHP, Louisiana State: What's a Draft class without a top LSU arm? Nola was LSU's Friday starter this year, going 12-0 with a 1.68 ERA, striking out nearly a batter per inning while holding hitters to a .187 BAA. 6. Trea Turner, SS, N.C. State: He's a shortstop who can stay there, a leadoff hitter extraordinaire with plus-plus speed that allowed him to steal 84 bases in his first two seasons of college ball. 7. Nick Gordon, RHP/SS, Olympia HS, Fla.: The son of Tom and brother of Dee, Gordon is a legitimate two-way guy who can play shortstop and hit from the left side. He's athletic on the mound, too, with a low-90s fastball and a big curve. 8. Michael Cederoth, RHP, San Diego State: The 6-foot-6 right-hander's numbers this year weren't outstanding, thanks largely to some command issues, but he did strike out 109 in 95 1/3 innings and sported an upper-90s fastball at times. 9. Nick Burdi, RHP, Louisville: It's not often a college closer gets ranked this highly, but Burdi reportedly hit triple digits during the 2013 season, striking out 61 in 34 2/3 innings. 10. Dylan Cease, RHP, Milton HS, Ga.: This year's Draft was partly about the outfielders in Georgia. Cease will make 2014 about pitching, as the right-hander has a loose, electric arm that touched 97 mph this past spring to go along with a good breaking ball and a feel for a changeup. The rest of the top 20: 11. Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS, Calif. 12. Brady Aiken, LHP, Cathedral Catholic HS, Calif. 13. Michael Gettys, OF/RHP, Gainesville HS, Ga. 14. Luke Weaver, RHP, Florida State from mlb.com http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1665039...years-1st-round Here's another one, that had us taking Kel Johnson...at the time of the article, we were drafting 8th based on the standings at the time it was written. (with accompany video footage) 1. Rodon 2. Jackson 3. Beede 4. Cederoth 5. Toussaint 6. Sheffield 7. Gatewood 8. Kel Johnson 9. Mark Zagunis © Virginia Tech 10. Brett Austin © NC State 11. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...ws&c_id=cws Pretty amazing story...and to think, he actually was withholding his full arsenal for fear of hitting someone, hadn't pitched in 8 years at all of a mound and was using moving two-seamers instead of a four-seamer. Legitimately, he could have throwing 94-95-96-97 out there, it seems, albeit straight. It's like something out of THE ROOKIE with Dennis Quaid (Jim Morris story). -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 03:07 AM) I been here 10 years. I have to admit, I'm addicted to Soxtalk. I hate this board so much at times but I can't stop from logging in. 2003-2006 was the goldenage of Soxtalk. Everybody was cool, witty, funny, etc( I'm calling out Kalapse, qwerty and Felix for not bringing their knowledge to PHT). Gamethreads were so much better back in he day. Now gamethreads consists of Caulfields long-winded rants and soxfest one-liners. Terrible. This board site is in decline and soxtalk bosses must do something. This is soxtalk. Not Hawkstalk. This board should be about the White Sox 95% and like 5% everything else. Filibuster is a joke (lol@Jenks and strange, get a f***ing you boring dickheads). I'm insulted. The best thread on this board is the nba thread because of me. I want 2005 Soxtalk back. Mods, make it happen. Since when have you contributed anything to a Gamethread? You're the one who spends all your time arguing about LeBron FREAKIN' James, and you wonder why SoxTalk sucks now? Maybe if you actually paid attention to what was going on with the team more closely, actually watched the majority of their games...actually had something constructive to say about a topic other than Snooki, but whatever. Here, have your stupid gamethreads to yourself the next two months. STOP THE ---- complaining and do something about it instead of acting like a whiny -----. I expect YOU, since you're calling everyone out, to do something to make this site better. What value have you brought? So I'll give up posting for the next 6 weeks or so in them, since even Fathom hardly posts on gamethreads anymore, and leave you to talk about the White Sox to your heart's content. You can fix things, just like Mr. Hahn. So nice to see one person here wants to be accountable for the sad state of things. Improve away...
