QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 4, 2013 -> 06:17 AM) It's definitely OK for a cop to yell back at a person in certain situations, and not just where violence is implied. There are a million different personalities in the world. Believe it or not, some people NEED to be yelled at to reach them. Of course you want to keep it low as often as possible, but that's not always an option. It's a little more complex than how you originally put it, is all I'm getting at. If you have seen the video from the recent Reese Witherspoon arrest, it's amazing the cop kept his patience and cool the entire time.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 3, 2013 -> 10:16 PM) Iron Man 3 was excellent. Great character development and that is all in will say. This is definitely where the Transformers series (besides the hiring of Michael Bay) and Iron Man 2 went astray a little bit... No matter what the special effects or CGI, if you don't really care about the fate of the characters at all (of course, there are exceptions like E.T., where it's an alien and not a human....but the point remains), then it can't really be a great movie that you become emotionally invested in or want to see more than once or twice in your lifetime.

QUOTE (High Mileage @ May 3, 2013 -> 11:55 PM) I haven't heard anything about Shields teaching his new teammates his cutter, nor anything about issues with Joe Maddon, but it's certainly possible. As far as Santana, I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. This season, his K/9 is way up, K/BB and BB/9 are way down. In 2008 he had the best season of his career, and in the 4 seasons after his K/9, K/BB, and BB/9 were actually really consistent. I have heard his velocity was down last year, as there have been rumors that he's been pitching for a while now with a partial tear, in his elbow I believe. Our TV guys have said his velocity is back up this year, whatever that's worth. Last year his biggest issue was the long ball, he lead the league. Enough of these damn postponements already, I WANT TO WATCH BASEBALL!!! Okay, well, he definitely wasn't the same pitcher that I remember from the 2005 World Series, that's for sure. Last year, I remember almost feeling sorry for him on the mound. Wonder how a partial tear or injury like that could bother him for four years and then magically go away? Well, I'd have to let our resident physical therapy/medical expert PTAC answer that question. Guthrie's been on a great run, especially against the Sox. Heard it has been something like 16 consecutive starts for him without a loss. Not a bad little acquisition after the Indians, Orioles and Rockies all gave up on him. He always had first round talent and just never put it together. And happy not to have to face Bruce Chen in the rotation, no matter what his ERA is in any given season.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 3, 2013 -> 10:46 PM) Why not skip over Axelrod after the rainout? I personally think the Royals' lefties will light him up. And Sal likes slow tossers, too. You're only allowed to call White Sox players by their pet nicknames!

Damn you, Avila. Veras gave up a two run homer to blow the save and probably the game. Will wait to see what Papa Grande does. Astros, if they go on to lose, will still not have won a single game all season when their opponent scored first. Fister had an implosion in this one...gave up five baserunners (3 runs) in a row in the 7th and had to be relieved.

http://www.journalnow.com/sports/dash_base...1a4bcf6878.html Love the last line, even in a puff piece. Nice to feel good about ANYONE's future in this organization for the moment. Courtney Hawkins on the 7 Day DL (undisclosed injury). Brent Tanner to Kanny even though he was 10/25 and 4 for 5 on WED. Ravelo up to Winston-Salem.

Erik Johnson with another very good start, but rain-delayed and probably won't come back out again. 3 1/3, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA down to 1.30, and roughly .160 BAA. Too bad the rain came right when he was facing Puig again.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) Quietly, Phegley's having a heck of a season The problem is how likely is it that he'll put up a 700+ OPS at the major league level? And he might be a solid defensive catcher, but he's not Miguel Olivo arm-wise, either. What are his splits against RHPers? He's one of those guys who's "interesting" but because of his injuries and health problems (and was drafted pretty high), he's not even a consensus Top 10 prospect in our relatively weak system.

Mark Buehrle must be feeling snake-bitten...
caulfield12 replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
As for the players meeting, it was called by Mark DeRosa in an attempt to get some confidence, some swagger back into the clubhouse. “I think obviously it’s necessary for us,” he said before Tuesday’s game. “You can’t leave it up to Gibby and the coaching staff every time. It was a situation where we needed to come together as a group, air our differences if there were any, kind of open up the floor.” DeRosa said the Jays had kind of lost their way. “I felt like when I showed up in spring training there was such a buzz about this team,” he said. “The guys kind of fed off of it. I felt like even though we never had our true team out on the field, we kind of had a little pep in our step playing throughout spring training and playing well. I just wanted to get that feel back again.” He added that what the Jays have gone through is a new feeling for him as well. “To be honest with you, I’ve never been in this situation,” he said. “I’m not used to putting on my uniform and expecting things to go wrong. I expect them to go right. There’s no way, with this team, that that should happen.” Remarkably, Gibbons hasn’t lost his sense of humour. The besieged manager has retained the ability to poke fun at himself even with many if not the majority of fans calling for his scalp in wake of his team’s dreadful April. Prior to the game he was asked if when he brings the lineup card to the plate along with his Boston counterpart John Farrell, who the fans will be booing? “Probably me,” he said with a laugh. “I was walking around town yesterday (Monday) and was kind of ducking if that’s what you mean (regarding the fans’ frustration). “There’s got to be frustration and I can totally understand it. Like I said the other day, nobody’s more frustrated than we are. But something would be wrong if they (fans) weren’t frustrated. That’s fair, more than fair.” As the pre-game scrum was breaking up, he was asked what he did on the off day. He said he watched a movie and added with a grin: “I was going to buy a Leafs jersey and wear it around but I didn’t want to curse them.” Toronto Sun -
over the last two seasons. He played on a team with World Series aspirations with a brand-new, state of the art facility that turned into a complete disaster and eventual fire sale in Miami. Then, he had all the issues with his pit bulls and being separated from his family. Now he's playing on another team that had playoff aspirations which looks to be in a state of complete collapse....soon to be 10-20. And he's gotten off to one of the worst starts in his career with a negative WAR (-0.4) Pitching against the Yankees, Orioles and Red Sox isn't going to be a recipe for success. He would probably be much better off in the NL.

Our old friend Pedro Hernandez going for the Twins against the Indians in CLE. Weird they're playing in the North and NE but not KC. Having lived there for almost ten years, it's super unusual to have a hint of snow or ice in early May. Indians won in extras. 5000 walk-up on a beautiful Friday night in CLE. Stubbs with the walk-off double. 5 in a row for Indians, and Twins have lost their last four one-run games. Twins' bullpen, leading the AL in ERA, faltered (Burton). Astros have rallied for 3 and are up 3-2 on the Tigers late in Houston.

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery
caulfield12 replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Actually, in hindsight, with the team getting back about $3.5-4.5 million for Floyd...he might be worth more to the organization as an insurance claim than whatever they could have received for him in trade the way he was pitching. Something to think about. Of course, it really depends on what they do with that "savings." Since he won't bring an actual trade return, it's much more difficult to see how the organization is benefitted...other than giving Axelrod/Quintana/Santiago more time to prove themselves for the future. -

Too bad they didn't trade him to the Blue Jays while they still had a chance, haha. Poor AA! -
QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) If Danks can't consistently pitch in the 90s, then he's going to have to reinvent his style of pitching. He's never had the type of control that made you think he could be successful as a finesse pitcher. I'll be very happy/pleasantly surprised if he can get his ERA in the 4.25 range or lower again. It's weird to think going back to one year ago today that 2 guys named Quintana and Santiago would be our "good stuff" lefties and John Danks would be a 4/5 type who's closer to "early career" Mark Buehrle than he is to good Johan Santana. We always used to compare Danks to guys like Sabathia, Lester, Romero...oh, for those days, for both Ricky Romero and John.

Brad Stephens: bring the brick and ivy to Rosemont

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) RIght now the Cubs are 20th in road attendance. I um, don't want to say where the White Sox are. Normally this is going to be skewed downwards because of the low attendance in CLE and KC over time....even Minnesota is "only" around 20th in the MLB attendance now, so, other than DET, all of the AL Central teams should be in the bottom 25-30 for attracting fans in opposing stadiums. -
We can't really expect Danks at 91-93 consistently, but if he's 86-89, there's such a smaller discrepancy between his fastball and offspeed stuff that he's really on the razor's edge as far as being effective, which means control/command and getting ahead in counts. At 88-89-90-91, he should be okay....and we'll have to hope he gets that extra oomph back over time. As long as he's not in the low 80's like Parque was when he came back. And finally, sure, Santiago should have had enough time to warm up...but it's just different psychologically coming into a game because of an injury. Farmer said it...you feel that sense of hurry from the players and crowd, who are being impatient for the game to be started again because the majority of your warm-up pitches are going to be in front of everyone and not in the bullpen. It's something you learn over time, how to pace and handle yourself coming into unexpected situations, but that relief outing was so out of whack with the rest of his season's results, and it was also against a team not even particularly knowing for being an offensive juggernaut.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 3, 2013 -> 07:24 AM) Thanks for proving my point? Dominant, not at 100 pitches, and can't finish the inning. If we're going to pick on anyone, it should be the GM and coaching staff/Ventura. They're the ones who have most of the starters seemingly hitting the wall around 75 pitches. This is the same organization that's led the majors or at least the AL in quality starts since 2003. The last time he came into a game, he wasn't given enough time to get ready and the weather was horrible. Everyone knows the starters need to get the ball to the bullpen for the 7th, instead of the 6th. It has been an issue with nearly every starter on the staff, spotlighting Santiago is pointless. Also, keep in mind the Rangers' line-up isn't exactly chopped liver. They went to two World Series and three playoff appearances in a row...any time you can take 2/3 on their home field, you consider yourself quite fortunate and don't look for the negatives as much as you accentuate the things that did allow you to win the series.

"That was a pretty good breaking ball that Sale threw and he (Baker) just stayed with it and crunched it. After the first inning, Sale went more to his change-up and his breaking ball. He was able to get it over for strikes and he was able to backfoot some of them. He made us swing at some pitches that were balls and....you know. cause we were all over his fastball. He changed his approach and it worked for him." Elvis Andrus said "it feels like Sale is throwing from first base...almost as if the first baseman is pitching rather than a pitcher." On the unique delivery/angles of pitches and if there's another pitcher like him. "I haven't seen one. He's one of a kind, I'd imagine. He's the first lefty I've seen that throws from that angle in the starting rotation and can manipulate the baseball the way he does. You know what I was saying, we got him off his fastball but he had enough good secondary stuff that he went to it and he was able to get out of some jams." Source: Rangers' pregame show with Eric Nadal/KESN Radio. FWIW, counting Santiago last night, the Rangers actually saw 8 lefthanders starting against them in their last 10 games. With Dubront and the Red Sox, it will be 9/11 on Friday. First Sox road series win. First Rangers home series loss.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 2, 2013 -> 06:56 PM) That should be taught in primary and secondary school. Those are not academic subjects, at least in the way they are going to be taught to these students. As an English major, definitely agree that literature/rhetoric needs to stay. Fitness/nutrition/diet classes belong in KG, elementary, middle school and high school...by the time students are in university, or even in high school, it's too late.

QUOTE (High Mileage @ May 2, 2013 -> 11:14 PM) I agree with pretty much all of this. Shields is our only starter I'm confident in at this point. Santana looks like he's regained his old form, but still too early in the season. Guthrie continues to pitch well for us, I just hope he can at least be slightly above average and stays healthy to eat up innings. Wade Davis is still working at being a starter again, he's had several outings where he's been hit hard and really labored through a lot of innings, throwing a lot of pitches to get through 5. Luis Mendoza has been a mess, and due to all the postponements, they've been able to skip him in the rotation a few times. He's running out of time, Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino will be back fairly soon. I hope Mendoza pitches well enough until then to keep Chen and Hochevar in the bullpen. Hosmer hasn't hit much, but he's at least been getting on base, and he's showed much improved patience and discipline at the plate. Moustakas has been completely lost pretty much all season. He too has shown better discipline at the plate, as his walks are up and strikeouts are down. He does have a 5-game hitting streak, and has looked a lot better over those 5. Perez has just been swinging at everything, he's collected 1 walk to go with his 19 strikeouts. I won't waste any more than this sentence on Jeff Francoeur. Thankfully other guys have been picking up their slack: Gordon (.321/.351/.495), Alcides Escobar (.291/.333/.437), Lorenzo Cain (.329/.383/.463) and even Billy Butler after a slow start (.278/.414/.430). I'm pretty pumped for this upcoming series, as long as the weather doesn't screw it all up. Is Shields teaching his cutter to some of the Royals' pitchers? Supposedly, that was one of the main reasons Maddon wanted him out in TB, along with his increasing salary...and his leadership/veteran status in the clubhouse, he was pretty influential and outspoken. They (the Rays as an organization) felt that the best way to lose velocity quickly was overreliance on the cutter, and Shields is a big proponent of that pitch....whereas the Rays teach their minor leaguers to use a fastball, change and then curve and slider is the least favored option but they live with it. The biggest worry about Santana is his stuff. His K ratio has been way down, along with his velocity. Maybe he's learning how to be a better pitcher (see Jake Peavy) and can no longer rely on blowing people away. However, over time, the more contact you're giving up...the good results tend to even out with those BABIP stats if they're out of whack.

QUOTE (Cali @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) I'm not saying he was supposed to be lights out, I'm saying he doesn't have like one defining moment. Like Danks is just as frustrating as Floyd, but he always has Game 163. Floyd was just.... there. He had two or three one hitters in 2008. It seems he's done that at least twice against the Tigers in his career.
