Sox vs Rangers game thread 5/2/13
caulfield12 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2013 Season in Review
1/5 with RISP. Of course, the one hit doesn't result in a run, typically because of either slow baserunners or mental breakdowns. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ May 2, 2013 -> 07:57 AM) Hawk always defends AJ as he has been friends with the family since AJ was in high school. AJ was disliked by almost everyone. Hate is too strong of a word. They tolerated a good baseball player but didn't like him. Please, no more Doctor Phillips in Orlando/Johnny Damon mentions, lol.

Sucks for the Royals, who had an early lead in that one... Ellis Johnson (yet another super utility guy in the Zobrist/Keppinger/Rodriguez mode) coming back to victimize his former teammates but it goes for naught...
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2013 -> 05:41 PM) Johnson isn't on the 40 man roster, and the 40 man is full right now. Minor league starters on the 40 man include Rienzo, Castro, and Molina. Berken is another with MLB experience (Orioles) and has a decent Charlotte ERA. Would have to make yet another roster move, though. As far as back spasms go, usually subside in 2-3 days, worst-case scenario. We have a great physical training staff, starting with Hermie and Allen Thomas on down...they'll get it nipped in the bud.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 2, 2013 -> 12:56 PM) People with back issues. I think we can make a thread devoted just to that issue for the Sox Canseco (haha) David Wells Youkilis Peavy Thome Jenks Crede Dunn (a couple of times?) Konerko

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery

It's around 35-40% that the insurance company is paying...FWIW. Typically. Some of the huge contracts out there, especially for pitchers (see Verlander/Greinke), it's probably a slightly different figure. -
Yes, we know all about the Royals and 2003. That was a quite different team than the one they've assembled this year. The other problem is there's probably some statistic like no White Sox team trailing by 6-7-8 games on some random day in the first two weeks May has ever come back to make the playoffs with the exception of 1983.

Wow, the Royals were down 6-1 in the early going and rallied for the comeback in the middle innings. Impressive. Day game today against TB to hold onto the AL Central lead, 1/2 game up on the Tiggers.

Hawkins leaves game after diving catch

http://www.journalnow.com/sports/dash_base...19bb30f31a.html How can the Winston-Salem newspaper have an article about the game and not mention an injury to the most important prospect in the White Sox system? Must not be that serious it didn't even merit a mention in the game story. -
Iron Man 3 was very good, not quite great. Saw it 3-D here in China. I would rank the first Iron Man ahead of it, and last year's Avenger's just a small notch above... Kind of like a cross between The Iron Giant and one of the Terminator movies...with Tony Stark's unique and cocky sense of humor as usual thrown into the mix. Ben Kingsley was very good as The Mandarin. Also a fan of Rebecca Hall.

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 2, 2013 -> 12:34 AM) I asked the same question. Being from San Diego and all, why would he be a Sox fan? WGN?

Would things be any different under Walker?

QUOTE (Andrew @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:30 PM) "Hyperbolic"? What is hyperbolic about this team in the last 8 yrs? If anything, a dip in 07 and heading for another this year, but the rest is a straight line, my friend... NO HYPERBOLE. If you prefer looking at the saber metrics, those are pretty much flat too. We hit homeruns (pretty much consistent); we don't get on base, don't walk well, low is XBH... I can't find ANY hyperbole, actually, in anything I said! I appreciate you (sort of) agreeing, but your first sentence was the most important and you completely contradict yourself. *Edit - It occurs to me that you don't know what it means to say someone's statements are "hyperbolic". In fact, I'm 100% sure you have no idea what it means. Words/phrases like "pathetic," "fluke/flake" (for Gillaspie), "we all learned this in Little League," etc. Essentially, your last post is saying they've basically been average for much of the time period since 2005 (minus 2006 and 2008, when they were clearly above average, as well as 2010 and 2012). If a team is usually between 78-84 wins every year, the argument is there's no need to exaggerate or use hyperbole to stress your points...that things are not QUITE so dramatic or as dire as they may seem. -

Could the White Sox move to Wrigley Field if they relocate, lol? (Waits for attacks to come from every direction...)

Beckham out 6-8 weeks with fractured hamate bone

QUOTE (Andrew @ May 2, 2013 -> 12:37 AM) Beckham sucks. Who cares if he's back? Doesn't help the team at all. Not sure why people even care - he's simply not very good at baseball. Have you watched Greene and especially Keppinger playing 2B every game since he's been gone? -

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 1, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) White Sox are totally classless. There was no legit reason to throw at AJ there. And the meatheads love it because they never appreciated AJ when he was here. No AJ, no White Sox World Series. AJ is better off with a real contender and the Sox are stuck with Flowers who not only can't hit but doesn't handle the pitching staff as well as AJ did and hasn't been any better throwing runners out. I'd say AJ gets the last laugh and the Sox just showed why they are the pathetic losers they have become. Not pulling any punches tonight...
-
Maybe that Passan article on diminishing velocity readings got into the heads of some of those pitchers, trying to prove they still have the giddy-up on their pitches...
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 1, 2013 -> 09:24 PM) I'm speechless if the devaluation of AJP's career with the Sox has already begun. Wow. Would you call Crede, Rowand and Jenks Sox "legends"? Uribe? Garland? Obviously, Frank Thomas...but Buehrle and Konerko will always be considered the heart of that World Series team.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 1, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) Maybe our clubhouse has a bunch of prima donnas if that's the case and they can't handle a prick who likes to win. If that's the case, they would have traded him or at least not kept him around for an additional 7 seasons after the World Series win in 2005. KW always liked his competitive, grindy, hard-nosed players who were as good at the mental side as the physical side. Now if you want to say this style was the opposite of Dunn, Thome, Konerko, Dye, Rios...at least the perception most have of them...then that's probably fair. But surely Konerko would have gone to JR or KW or Ozzie or Ventura at some point if the problem was THAT bad that it was a clubhouse distraction or eroding the team chemistry.

http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/Kansa...S+USKS0298:1:US As someone else mentioned, probably a 90% chance of losing Friday's game and 40-50% for Saturday in KC. All hands on deck in the 2nd half of the season at this rate...

Merge into one thread, por favor.

"Sox legend"? AJ was very good with us, he was an integral part of helping us to win the World Series in 2005...but legend is really pushing it. That word is reserved for guys like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Nellie Fox, Aparicio, etc. But wasn't Sean Tracey the one who was ordered to hit someone with the Rangers by Ozzie? Or was that Garland, and he failed to do it...? Can't remember now.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2013 -> 07:12 PM) Something I don't get is why in the world is Flowers batting 8th and Wise 9th? If anything, you want to make it harder for opposition to bring in a lefty with it being Wise/Flowers/ADA. Instead, you make it much easier for opposition to play the match-ups. Because all "fast" players hit first or 9th, lol. Ventura doesn't often seem to be thinking very strategically with some of his line-up decisions.
