  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 01:08 AM) I don't think so, but if you're correct, any talk about empty seats by White Sox employees should be banned. That's why it's always double-talk to complain about attendance when it's not fans they want, it's fans that pay the "maximized" or idealized amount of money (from the Sox standpoint) to attend games...which isn't really fair in this economy to criticize anyone with a family for hesitating. Even if their attendance "exploded" comparatively from here on out, the best they would possibly do is 23rd in the majors. They're 27th now...and more than 500 away from 26 and 25. It will be pretty tight by the end of the Cubs' series, but they'll still be 27th despite their best drawing home series of the year. That alone is pretty indicative of how the attendance has been so far.
  2. You have to like that Torres is involved, that gives us at least a 50/50 chance if we really want him one would imagine. He knows how well our Cuban players have been treated, the example most recently being the Contreras/Ramirez gold medel "re-awarding."
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 12:09 AM) There's no reason to think Floyd won't be better. He does this every year. Humber is scary. As for Sale and Peavy, Quintana regressing, it probably will happen, but the Sox hitters also benefit from the summer air. It really doesn't matter if they will 4-2 or 6-4. We can't even use the "just look at the back of his baseball card" excuse with Humber. Floyd at least has the track record, but we saw that Dunn, Rios and Beckham never came out of their slumps for all of last year...it could conceivably happen with Floyd the way he's going.
  4. All things considered, Tyler Kuhn might be the next best choice...and the organization felt the same about him as Doyle, essentially. But I would pick him over McPherson or Johnson because he makes contact and won't kill you defensively.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 10:28 PM) Many have been crying recently that Danks was given a contract extension. Now that he's for a little while, that shouldn't be used as a reason the team can't hang with Detroit. They have been hanging with them without Danks being healthy, and Floyd and Humber being horrible up until now. If Floyd or Humber or both bounces back and Danks returns healthy, the Sox will be fine. There's also no guarantee Detroit remains healthy. I voted that KW should have done exactly what he did, despite the way things had been working so far this year. But therein lies the problem...Sale/Peavy/Quintana can't possibly be as good as they have been, and have tons of room for regression and/or being shut down prematurely due to their previous work totals in 2010 and 2011. Humber, Floyd, Axelrod, Stewart, Castro, don't have anywhere to go but up, same with Hudson/3B. At best, it's probably a wash. Which is more likely, for Peavy/Quintana to fall back or for Humber/Floyd to post 3.5-4.5 ERA's in the heart of summertime at USCF?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:01 PM) Yes. Doyle is somewhere around the 10th to 12th starter in the organization right now. Danks Peavy Sale Floyd Humber Quintana Stewart Axelrod Castro You might even say that someone like Hector Santiago could be stretched out ahead of Doyle, and throw in Pedro Hernandez as a maybe as well. Poor Nestor.
  7. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:48 PM) If that Is the case why not try wilkins at third. I wonder if we could convert the kid we just drafted in the first round to play 3rd? He is big, athletic, and had a plus arm. Wr are loaded with outfield talent. He might grow even more into a corner infielder. Because he's 3-4 years away from being ready for the majors. Because KW should remember himself what dramatic position changes did to his playing career. Because of the Viciedo fiasco at 3B. Loaded with OF talent? Not in 2015, and Hawkins still might not be ready yet for the major league roster.
  8. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 10:43 PM) When you play the worst team in baseball at home, you should win. Not asking a lot. See Astros, Houston. Then again, we had a 90% chance at sweeping the best team in baseball on the road.
  9. Except he last had the speed to justify some of that overaggressiveness about 4-5 years ago when he was closer to his prime. If he wants to be considered another leadoff guy, he should at least post an OBP of 300+.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) What you've basically got to assume to say the Tigers are the favorites is that the Tigers will stop being hit by injuries and the other teams will continue to be hit by injuries. Which you do here. I'm not going to guarantee the Royals over the White Sox, but do you really believe with Danks out for probably two months that the White Sox should be favored over a Tigers team that just got back Fister and Austin Jackson?
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) Third base really isn't that big of a problem. His defense is adequate and probably equal to most of the big bats we could bring in at that position. Of course, Orlando's defense actually has plenty of upside to get better unlike some of the Youkilis types of players. I also think that O-Dog plays better defense than Mark Teahen. It'd be great to get his bat (or any 3B bat) going, but this team is going as far as Gavin Floyd, Phil Humber, Jose Quintana, and our AA/AAA rotations will take us. Unless Floyd/Humber catch fire something like right now, it would be a waste of prospects to acquire a short term 3B Maybe, but I doubt Hudson can be nearly as good at making the play on the bunt or the slow dribbler down the line where he has to throw towards 1B across his body with all of his moment going away from the field as he comes in to field it. That's the toughest play for a 3B.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) Our third baseman of the future is back at his home in California and it's not even the all star break. There are no plans to have him return. This is horrific news. I think he's finished. He's on his own right now. Horrific is reserved for disasters like tsunamis, terrorist attacks, nuclear meltdowns and plane crashes. The White Sox will continue to field teams with a 3B. And it will be very challenging for anyone playing the position to put up a worse OPS than what we've gotten for the first 2 1/2 months.
  13. http://radiology.rsna.org/content/213/3/709.full So it's a slight tear of the subscapularis tendon in his left shoulder....Grade 1 One of the articles on-line says "Danks has a torn tendon" and that sounds a LOT worse than it apparently is. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/13272636-57...g-shoulder.html The out indefinitely part isn't encouraging, though.
  14. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 02:29 AM) I've heard they think he may have some disease too, because he was losing a ton of weight I guess. They think he may have developed Glutton/Wheat allergies or something. I heard this all on The Score a week or two ago. gluten i think 3B Brent Morel admitted that he not only has a bad lower back, which landed him on the disabled list Tuesday, but he has also been dealing with weight-loss problems that resulted in the team stepping in and getting him on a new diet. "It's not celiac disease, but it's just a sensitivity to wheat," Morel said. "I have to eat gluten-free, but actually I finally have been able to keep (some weight) on. I went into spring training at 220 (pounds), and I'm back up to 215 right now. For right now, I just have to have a gluten-free diet, and so far it seems to be OK as we go forward." There is no timetable for Morel to return from the back problems.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 12:43 PM) I would agree. With this team still looking .500 at best cause of our inability to win at home, might as well hold him out to be safe. I do believe he's done for the year. Sounds scary to put him back out there for a long period of time. They're not going to pay a pitcher that kind of money and sit him in the middle of a pennant race if he's healthy and there's no danger of further damage. That said, they're obviously going to be very conservative. Everyone remembers the scenario with Peavy in 2009, which led to his changing his motion/delivery and the lat tear. As Danks said, he discovered he was also changing his mechanics to lessen the pain, and that's where you always get into trouble. HOPEFULLY, no surgery will be needed and he will be 100% in August and September. As mentioned, we just have to look at it like we're acquiring a 2/3 starter at the trade deadline, if we can stay within 3-4-5 games of first place by the end of July.
  16. QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 12:23 PM) Not even at the break and your calling the season already. Were in 1st place btw Right now, you'd have to say the Tigers are still the favorites. If they can keep Fister healthy and get Smyly back from the blister, and get Avila back 100%, they're going to be a tough out...no matter how bad Valverde's been pitching. However, if Peavy keeps pitching like this and the team starts to fall out of, you see what you can get for him and use the 2nd half to audition virtually everyone in AA/AAA for next season. That also gives you a better idea of what to do with Gavin Floyd.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 12:14 PM) He's in AA, and it sounds like KW was praising Simon Castro today. I keep seeing people talk about Axelrod and others, but it seems like a lock the rotation is now Peavy, Floyd, Sale, Humber, Quintana with Axelrod next in line. Pedro Hernandez made the Southern League All-Star team, and his stats are similar with Quintana. Not surprising you would hear more hype about Castro and Mitchell (who's sinking fast) than Mr. Molina. Can't wait for the "puff pieces" about Ryan Howard/Barnum and Hawkins/Kemp taking the rookie leagues by storm.
  18. Wonder how Dr. Lewis Yocum and and his staff missed that one? Glad he got the second opinion, surely he knows his own body better than anyone else and just felt that something wasn't right...an acute ache or pain, a soreness that lasted longer and that he had never felt before between starts. On one, it's great to know that's probably a lot of the reason he wasn't performing well, trying to pitch through it since Spring Training and never getting his crisp fastball back and just gutting it out ala Peavy. It really puts the whole organization at a cross-roads in terms of what to do about 2012 (buying, staying put or selling or a little of all 3), though. PTAC guest appearance on the program in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:24 AM) What do you want your manager to do? You know how many hours they spend at the park? Ozz has time to f*** around. Like he said, let the coaches do the things they are paid for. The manager is the organizer. I wouldn't read scads of stats on the Internet either, if I were Ozzie. His track record suggests his style works. Make that past tense, WORKED. He hasn't adjusted since 2005.
  20. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:23 AM) Who'd have thought that Brandon McCarthy would turn out to be a more valuable SP than Danks? I thought that trade was a heist at the time. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he ends up with on the FA market. He's definitely one of the top five FA's available, but you have a long list of injury problems and the "Oakland Effect" on pitchers which shouldn't be overlooked, either.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:15 AM) What a mess. Still unbelievable to me they didn't have a back-up 3rd baseman on the bench coming into the season if Morel struggled again/got hurt. Too bad they didn't get Chavez like they tried to. If we had just kept Juan Uribe after 2008.... 1) We never would have had to move Beckham to 3B 2) We never would have traded for Mark Teahen, nor extended him 3) We never would have had to give away Edwin Jackson for virtually nothing just to dump Teahen's salary 4) We'd AT LEAST be getting above average defense and inconsistent offense from him...and I think Juan being around Allen Thomas and Hermie more, he wouldn't have gained quite so much weight as he has with the Giants and Dodgers Maybe you can argue that KW wouldn't have felt the pressing need to sign Viciedo and project him at 3B, but most reasonable observers always believed Dayan's bat would be his plus tool and were never convinced he could stick anywhere in the infield except for 3B.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:04 AM) Well, this outcome is truly not shocking. Two straight give away games by our stupid organization. Great thing we rested all of the starters yesterday when we knew that Stewart was going tonight. Starting Quintana tonight would have made so much more sense, especially with the Cubs being 3-15 vs LHP this year. Zach Stewart is terrible (I don't think he'd even be effective in the minors with the stuff he has), can we please stop trading with the Blue Jays please? I avoided this one like the bubonic plague...well, actually, I had to get a health exam so lucky I missed it. Fathom's point is a good one. We knew a couple of days ago they were going to move Sale back and use Stewart, we should have played the entire bench AND started Stewart on Sunday...get all the bad news out of the way in one game. Essentially, we just gave up 2 of the last 3 games...it's not like we're in a pennant race or anything. That Dodgers' series is going to have a hangover effect, it looks like. We'll find out for sure tomorrow when we start the game with at least a decent chance to win the game.
  23. Well, this is going about as well as expected. Indians/Reds, 7-7
  24. And the Reds are back on top. Votto is a beast, and the Reds are white hot, and Lowe probably sucks more than Latos, so there's that. The evils of two lessers pitching there.
  25. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 07:38 AM) There was once a midget who played in the bigs a long time ago, his only PA was a walk. He had a career OBP of 1.000 and an OPS of 1.000. Hall of Fame numbers. Eddie Gaedel. Bill Veeck trick, with the CLE Indians.
