Something has to be done to improve the rotation
caulfield12 replied to sunofgold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) Ok, that's it...we've really got to try something else at this point...I can't sit through another Gavin start. Humber one start from being bumped. Floyd looking even worse, statistically. Danks aching. Quintana...how long will his "luck" last? -
How the hell does one of the Molina brothers have 6 steals?
-
Viciedo would be getting a little more sympathy if Furcal wasn't able to stop that ball yesterday. But he's still around 4 for his last 34 or something like that. Hopefully the next hot streak comes soon.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) Sanchez has a filthy slider Viciedo PH homer...
-
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 09:56 AM) That was an assload of changeups to Descalso. Meh. Are you sure those weren't fastballs?
-
Here's the other downside to Floyd/Humber starts. Stewart, Santiago and Ohman just aren't capable of holding the team in games....something that the likes of DJ Carasco or Tony Pena were better at, IMO. HOPEFULLY THIS JINXES Stewart into an actual scoreless relief outing.
-
And the Dunn homer makes the game interesting again. DeAza's been so steady getting clutch hits and getting on base this season, he's probably the real MVP (if you don't go for obvious choices like Konerko, Dunn and AJ). Konerko taking some pretty bad swings with advantageous counts in recent days. Getting himself out.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 09:41 AM) Tuned in to see another disasterous outing for Floyd. It's really too bad that Cooper never worked on a sinker with him, as that fastball of his is just not an effective pitch. If Danks really had a setback, then this rotation's future for the rest of the year is extremely scary. Just hope it's not the shoulder/labrum. Didn't PTAC write a report about this which didn't seem too discouraging at the time? Guess there's 2 ways to look at this. Without Peavy, Sale and Quintana, we'd be dead in the water and fighting with the Twins and Royals. As it is, we're still 1 1/2 games up for first, Viciedo and Ramirez are ice cold, Dunn's hurt and Konerko's sulking/pouting. The recent performances (except for one) by most of the bullpen have been encouraging. I doubt they would do it, but there might be some consideration given to shifting Nathan Jones back to a starting role. It would be a longshot at this point in the season, definitely. But there's no worse feeling as a Sox fan than not even wanting to turn on the game or watch when the Sox are in first place.

Well, the one way you have to look at this series is that the Indians just got swept and we actually gained ground on them...but we're letting the Tigers back into it. You can't honestly say that you would have expected Quintana to beat Wainright or Floyd to beat anyone, and Peavy/Lynn could have gone either way with the momentum on Lynn's side and being at home and being the defending World Series champions who were just starting to come out of a slide, 1-2 isn't the end of the world, but it's now what you hope for after taking the first game, obviously. Not sure what else you can say or do. We knew the Tigers were going to be better when they got Austin Jackson back in the line-up, and he's playing again like he never missed a beat.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,2763118.story Here's the Danks article. Doesn't look very good at all for him to be starting against the Cubs next week. Good news for Quintana/Humber/Floyd, not so good for KW and our chances of not being forced into a desperation move. Guess Axelrod has to be looked at again.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) Doesnt Danks have soreness from his start yesterday? Is it "routine" soreness or a new/deeper pain or ache that he wasn't experiencing before? He said the discomfort that he felt when they shut him down was at a level he hadn't dealt with before...even though he felt it would have been possible to pitch through it without being shut down, they want to take the conservative approach and see if they could get him back to 100%.

Two problems.... While trading Gavin definitely carves his $9.5 million from the payroll (option) next year, it's going to be impossible to get anything back in return that's near the value he can bring when he's on one of his good streaks. There's little choice but to ride this out a little longer... Of course, pretty soon, the Tigers will be knocking on the door and the stretch of games (the last home series where we went 2-4) will be gone. That said, we've got a disproportionate number of games left with the Twins and Royals in the 2nd half. We make a move now out of desperation, it's Holmberg/Hudson for Edwin Jackson all over again. Impossible position for a GM to be in....your heart tells you to go for it while your gut tells you the Tigers are still the team to beat if they can get their starting rotation healthy.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 04:55 AM) Ok, well the Cubs got one game. Good enough. Rockies are on the verge of going 0-9 in interleague play. Facing the Tigers this weekend. They're due, right? That, and no Verlander. Smyly and Fister are ailing, so you'd think they would be able to do something against Scherzer, Porcello and the lefty rookie that's been inserted into the rotation recently.
-
C'mon Sveum. You can't have Valbuena swinging away when they finally got their first runner to 1B in 6 innings. DP ball. Especially when Reed Johnson was hitting .500 at a pinch hitter this season and over .300 overall. 103 pitches, 73 strikes for Verlander. At least the Cubs will have a chance against Valverde.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 04:16 AM) Regarding Doyle... I have no problems with the Sox releasing him. Probably on the fringe of whether he would make/stick on a major league roster. If so, how long do you hang around in AAA? Doyle is a very bright guy. Likely saw the handwriting on the wall. Plus he'll make alot more money in Japan than he would in the minors. So... probably the best thing for him. Best of luck Terry! Did they release him from his contract or did they sell his contract to the Japanese team?
-
Austin Jackson 2 out single after a Verlander bunt put the Tiggers ahead 3-2. LOL at the 7th inning guest Jeff "I'm Not Jon" Garland "Yeah, you Tigers fans suck!!!" 124,782 fans the largest series (3 game) total crowd in the history of Wrigley Field. Must be 33% Tiggers fans. (That translates to 17% of our entire season attendance in just one series). Verlander's gone almost 6 innings in a row without giving up a thing.

White Sox releasing $5 upper deck ticket for TOR series

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 12:37 AM) This is not true. There are many fewer travelers, especially for business. There are many web based meetings instead. This kills the airline industry. There are fewer seats because the number of flights has decreased. The price is increasing in part due to the struggles of the airline industry and fuel costs. Maybe I should preface my comment by saying in Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Haven't lived in the US since 2007. I'd have to check the overall worldwide numbers (with Europe teetering on the brink of collase, I can't imagine air travel has blipped any direction but down, except perhaps Germany)...just know they're in the process of building 50-100 new airports here in China over the next decade. For international/trans-ocean flights, the prices have markedly increased in the last 2-3 years. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) Maybe the votes against Ozzie were misunderstood. Heath Bell means no disrespect. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3301758.story Will Middleton or Middlebrooks? Not a great job by the editors picking up that one.

Boesch and Young are horrible on the corners. It wouldn't make much of a difference with Quentin there, might actually be an improvement, all things considered. They've actually even toyed with the idea of playing Berry in LF or RF with Austin Jackson back now.
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:50 PM) Whoever was the genius wishing the Tigers to trade for Quentin... well, they are interested. Jon Morosi @jonmorosi Sources: #Tigers have interest in trading for Carlos Quentin. He has a scorching 1.463 OPS in 12 games with #Padres since returning from DL I said the Indians or the Tigers... Both need either a LFer or RFer, although replacing Brennan Boesch in RF would be the most likely move. He would replace Johnny Damon in LF for the Indians...a lot depends on their confidence in Hafner and Sizemore coming back.
-
Dickey said it himself. David Wright makes that play 8 times out of 10, maybe less with a runner like Upton, realistically. I think to say it should be a "reasonable expectation" that the average MLB 3B consistently makes that play 90-95% of the time or more, no way.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 09:03 PM) For $58 million, I'd put up with Ozzie...with a big smile on my face. Oh, and the weather wouldn't hurt, either. The Marlins already cost him his consecutive string of interleague victories at 11. Wonder if he wishes he was back in 1st place and home in Chicago?

White Sox releasing $5 upper deck ticket for TOR series

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:08 PM) dont give brooks any ideas. and to punch a hole in your airline theory, sites like priceline and travelocity kill the airline's profits, as all but southwest allowed these middle men to sell their tickets for them. But now, when you go to priceline, travelocity, orbitz, expedia, etc., all the fares quoted are exactly the same as the others. There are very few "deals" anymore like it was possible to find. Price fixing and collusion rule the day....that's their choice, obviously. Even if you go directly to the airline's website itself, the prices are almost always the same as the other "search engine" sites list or charge. There's a lot more competition for the teams now with StubHub involved to undercut their own ticket markets significantly. -
QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:48 PM) KW has explored him in the past, not to the same level os O-Hudson, Erstad, others, but I'm sure he was kicking the tires. I hope he never has occasion to explore me...

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) Who moves up from Birm? I would pick Castro, but not sure they're ready yet to move him. They might fill the AAA rotation spot with a journeyman/waiver claim/filler/spot starter until they're ready to move Castro. Hernandez might also get a shot when he comes off the DL, one of those two guys.
