What's up with characterizing something as "strange"? (From now on, I think I'll just say the opposite of what I actually believe, in an effort to be exceedingly positive and cheerleaderish....so the comments about Revere and Hicks will fit into that overall paradigm shift over time). It's also "strange" to me that the White Sox season is about to be over before it even started...I'm frustrated, because as a baseball fan, I actually wanted to be able to care about my team. It would be nice to at least hope we have meaningful games in the second half of the season. So I promise for the rest of the season not to bring up the TWINS, nor will I create a discussion about abysmal attendance in a thread (as the topic of any "new thread" here or anywhere in PHT). You can ban me for life if I do that, fine. Then you will have new posters to concern yourself with...

2nd line....NO, NO, NO Also Dye seems like he'll be better in RF than TCQ $9 million in incentives? considering he will miss at least 2 months of the season....he would never believe they were attainable There's no need to trade/release Kotsay...he just shouldn't bat 5th (or 3rd) EVER nor should he play more than 1-2 (max) times per week

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) Those amount of strikeouts are simply not acceptable for a player who does not hit for power. Agreed. He's just not the fundamentally sound player you build future Ozzie Ball offenses around with ill-conceived contract extensions that are PREMATURE judgement by KW at best. Not criminal by KW, but negligent, considering how tight our payroll will be getting in the days and weeks to come.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) Not one thing premature about any of these assessments made so far. Teahen is the same player now that he was in KC for the past five years - a poor defending, light-hitting, strikeout machine. "Under-rated performer" could not be a more misused phrase if it's being used to describe Mark Teahen's baseball playing ability. And with all due respect, I could care less if Teahen spends all of his free time helping old ladies cross the street and saving cats stranded in trees. He's not here to win a Mr. Congeniality award. He's here to play third base for our White Sox, and so far he's not doing a very good job of it. I was being sarcastic in an effort to try to appear positive (since I genuinely have never had anything positive to say about Mark Teahen the 3B, as a person, great guy, one of the best, most personable in the game)...to see my actual thoughts, you'll see I more or less agree with you if you read the next couple of posts in the thread.

SouthSide, I lived in KC before I moved abroad and have seen him play a lot in person. I never liked him as a player or prospect....off the field, great "media-friendly" addition, a lot like Joe Borchard, but much more confident in himself. We'll see 14-18 homers, a good number of doubles, 120 K's, maybe 55-70 RBI's (with our offense as presently comprised)...260 - 275 BA. Nothing horrible, but his defense makes him a liability on a very good/great/elite team. Still better as an Xavier Nady type that can play multiple positions off the bench, but certainly not a starter that will lead us to the playoffs or be anything more than a complementary component. We put up with Crede at 725-775 OPS because of his defense and "clutch" hitting, not to mention a bit more overall pop in his bat. Teahen will more or less provide the same (less homers, more walks), but, once again, it's a net negative due to his defense and his lack of 800-950 OPS ability at a corner/power spot on diamond.

LOL. Maybe I will become a member of the board grammar police. Beware!

How would Dye fit in as DH here? Andruw Jones has been very very productive. Granted, that PROBABLY won't last the full season, but the only way you bring in JD is if there's some type of injury to Quentin or Jones that knocks them out for a long period of time. Or a second half like Jones went through in TEX. At that point, the White Sox are probably out of contention anyway, so JD would just block getting at-bats from a part of the solution for our future teams. I wish the Royals would sign him, they seem to enjoy picking random veterans to mix in with the young up-and-coming players (Guillen, Bloomquist, Meche, CoCo Crisp, Ankiel, Pods, Jacobs, Olivo, Kendall, Callaspo, etc.)

Okay, fair enough. Would you trade Gavin Floyd to the Padres for Jon Garland or Clayton Richard right now? -

Garland was a myth of a "good" pitcher for most of his Sox career. He was really an average fourth starter or great fifth starter with the exception of the World Series season. I guess what I am trying to say is that Garland didn't really "take off" to the next level and become anything close to an elite pitcher, as befitting his initial draft status. He's had a good major league career, nothing more, nothing less. So was 2005 just a fluke year, like it was for so much of our team? Was Cooper responsible for the success, but not also the failures of 2006/2007/2009 and so far this season? -
Premature evaluation!!! Give Teahen some more time. It's EARLY. He's a great clubhouse guy, does interviews for anyone who asks (even school newspapers) and an all-around good guy with a great sense of humor. You will come to know and love him like many Kansas Citians did with Joe Randa, another under-rated performer at the hot corner who never got the full amount of respect he was due because he played for the Royals and Pirates mostly.

If you'll care to notice, Sox Ace, I haven't started a single thread after a loss in weeks. Kind of beating a dead horse with that one. I even deliberately, with intentional forethought, started a "positive" thread there. I have yet to see anyone actually make a comment about the list I made. But we have 4-5 comments on my posting/s. 90% of the posters don't go through the minor league "catch all" threads....but you're free to move it there if you like....that's why we have mods, I thought??? Still, the point remains, I've yet to see anyone say what is right or wrong with the list I started the thread with. I've seen what is right and wrong with me, duly noted. Maybe I will try writing only positive things about the White Sox for the rest of the season, if that will appease you and ameliorate your discontent with the Sox, then I willl do it.

But Garland wasn't very good in 2006....well, the entire rotation regressed and the workload caught up with them, at least that was the theory at the time in August/September of that year. Those 2007 numbers were put up in a very meaningless season, it's not like saying Kip Wells was awesome in 2001 or 2002 for the Pirates, there was some stress in the first half of the season, BUT...the White Sox were eliminated about halfway through and went through the motions except for Wasserman, Gonzalez, Fields and Owens in the 2nd half. -
Didn't Carlos Martinez die in the last couple of years? Seems to have happened to a few ex White Sox players before their time. Joe DeSa and Ivan Calderon are two others that came to mind immediately. Martinez was GANGLY, that's the first word I thought when I saw him. He was one of my favorite players, never a power hitter, but fun to watch play the game...and he enjoyed being a baseball player, always had a smile on his face like Ozzie, Buehrle or Uribe.

Yeah, it would be liking crediting Cooper for Takatsu and Hermanson's half season bursts of success. Maybe Cotts and Politte in 2005? Thornton is usually given as exhibit 1, but Gavin Floyd's looking very shaky again (I remember saying we should trade him or DFA him this time last year and see if any team would assume his contract). 2008, he was great, no doubt. Danks, I'll give you (Cooper) some credit, but I'll also give Mark Buehrle a big portion of praise with getting him to work faster, serving as a role model and examplar. But did he really do anything to help Vazquez, for example? Aarsdma and Sisco? MacDougal? Masset? What about Contreras after 2006? Garland regressed big-time before we parted ways with him. Linebrink? Pena? They ran Rauch out of town, there are conflicting stories about what precipitated that situation turning so ugly in the end. -
Soriano's stuff is way down this year, he's doing it with smoke and mirrors. Those 2002-2004 Twins teams started AJ, Mientkiewicz, Rivas, Guzman, Koskie, Stewart, Hunter and Jacque Jones, for the most part. There's no comparison with the offensive firepower (sure, they had a Gold Glover at every infield position...better overall speed) but this Twins' team just has a different feel. I'll reserve judgement for later whether they will be (or are) better than the 2006 Twins, probably the most talented of their division title teams up until this moment.

Lowe gives up a crooked number, a 5 spot to make the Barons' game interesting again.

Let's trade Pierre, Teahen, Kotsay and Vizquel for Carlos Zambrano or David Ortiz. Haha. I love those post-game callers (Cubs fans are more famous for this) who think you can package 5 pieces of crap (like Fields, BA and Getz) and get back an All-Star caliber player. Konerko's, FWIW, not the problem....but is he part of the solution going forward? That's the big question. And at what price does it stop making sense? If not Konerko, it has to be Flowers or Viciedo in that spot (if we're looking at internal solutions). We'll be #26-30 in attendance if we use Josh Kroeger. Personally, I think the odds of AJ sticking around past this year are pretty remote. We have to stick it out with developing Tyler at catcher for as long as possible because of the offensive OPS advantage he'll give us over everyone but Mauer in our division.

Royals @ White Sox, 5/5 Game THREAD
caulfield12 replied to Steve9347's topic in 2010 Season in Review
Can someone look up how many games back we were in 1983 at 16-24 (at that point in the season)? Right now, it's looking like it will be 7 1/2 and possibly 8. -
Of course, MINN leading 2-0, Porcello looking 2-3 starts away from being sent to AAA to work on some issues. Would be season low 7 1/2 GB if the Twins hold on to win...8 already if we lose to Bannister.
-
BIRM leading 6-0.... Morel with two singles (765 OPS), Kuhn and Marrero 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's each Lowe pitching well, even though season BAA of .274 isn't that stellar KANNAPOLIS was wiped out 17-4 Collop got dusted, gave up 10 earned runs (11 hits) in 3 IP (10.42 season ERA), others irrelevant in relief New acquisition VERA 4/5, Colligan 2/5 and RBI (15) and Tr. Thompson 1/4 with a nice to see 2 out RBI

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ May 5, 2010 -> 09:17 AM) I guess I didnt follow it too closely, but why did the White Sox get rid of Jim Thome? It probably had something to do with age/bad back, but Im glad he's on the Twins now (not trying to sound like Im rubbing it in or anything) .263 /.391 /.596 /.988 slash line. 5 HR 15 RBI in 59 PA If you took O-Dog and Thome away and added them to the White Sox....Thome and Andruw Jones splitting time, with Jones obviously playing in the OF from time to time Beckham staying at 3B, Ramirez at SS and O-Dog at 2B...with no Juan Pierre (Hudson leading off), no Teahen, no Kotsay, then maybe the teams aren't separated by 7 games, we're only 2-3 GB, like the Tigers, or perhaps even, but with how bad we've played overall, it's hard to argue that the rest of the ballclub would be even but there's still a legit argument to be made
-
Are Sanchez and Kuhn even close to being on the radar in terms of being legit prospects who would be seriously considered to be blocking anyone?? Surely, the White Sox would address this issue if they thought those guys like Greene and Short were ready to move up a step. Probably nothing will happen until the All-Star breaks for Winston-Salem and BIRM.

Ozzie Guillen said he has a videotape from about 20 years ago in which he said his goal was to become the manager of the White Sox. "I'm lucky to do it," Guillen said Tuesday, hours before managing his 1,000th game for the Sox. How much longer Guillen will do so has been a source of speculation outside the organization in the wake of the Sox's sluggish start. Guillen said he would get fired before he would get tired of the job and quit. "I'm not going to quit," said Guillen, who surpassed Tony La Russa for third place on the Sox's all-time victory list with his 523rd Monday night. "I'm not a quitter. When I want to quit, I'll do a lot of stupid things and make sure they fire me and get paid." Guillen laughed before elaborating on why getting fired was better than quitting. "Because when you quit, it's hard for you to find another job," Guillen said. "Because when you quit, a lot of teams out there call you a quitter or say you can't handle yourself or can't handle the heat or you can't handle losing. "And that's tough to get a job. But everyone gets fired. I remember in 2004, my first day on the job, I say managers get hired to get fired. I'm lucky enough. I work my tail off to get a job and I'm lucky enough to still have a good club and good guys to manage." chicagotribune.com/sports (gonzales)
