Cameron Brink's already playing in the 3 vs. 3 games, which might end up getting more views than the women's team parade of blowouts. An occasionally friendly columnist went to Sky practice Tuesday eager to make rookie Angel Reese’s acquaintance, pull her aside from the cameras and microphones and speak with her about being 22 and taking a huge bite out of life — new job, new city, happiness, homesickness, fears, dreams. Columnists dream, too, usually about interviews that break beneath the surface like that. Nowhere on the to-do list was relitigating any of the things Reese has said, done or been accused of saying or doing that have brought critics out of the woodwork and the worst of them out from under their rocks to sling vile and abusive insults and epithets — many of them straight-up racist — at her.
  2. Cannon gave up one earned run on July 13th...previous game, 0 ER.
  3. DJ and Kasper are a welcome respite from that s%*# show of an announcing pairing.
  4. That and his salary terms aren't exactly favorable. Can just imagine already that situation where he gets run over/collision OR the old "gator arm" where he's fully extended for a throw off the bag and ends up getting a torn UCL or shoulder injury.
  5. Absolutely dumbfounded that Jon Singleton is still around with Houston... One of the first "head shaking" early extension guys out there. I think the other guy at that time was a 1B with Seattle, White was his name? Logan?
  6. They have the same thing with Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, where the home plate is encased in plastic inside of a UPitt Medical School building and I'm pretty sure one part of the original RF wall is still standing as well honoring Clemente.
  7. Looks like if the trendline continues that Vaughn will get at least ONE more season with the White Sox with his OPS nearing .700ish. Honestly can't believe there might be yet another season of Sheets, but no obvious replacements in their minor league system to take those at-bats. Elko, I guess? Baldwin?
  8. Cannon very quietly all the way down to a respectable 3.77 ERA...
  9. Well, one thing is that the three or four "other" most famous white players in Plum, Stewart (has a partner), Sabrina Ionescu...weren't exactly greeted in the same way as Clark has been. They had it tough, but to the point that Clark has been pressured or face guarded full court MORE THAN MANY INDIVIDUAL WNBA teams if you add up all the players on those teams and how they're matched up with defensively. Cameron Brink (LA) and next year Paige Bueckers as the likely #1 pick overall out of UConn aren't going to face anything like this either, because they've both been outspoken about "white privilege" and received acceptance for their political positions across the WNBA. Clark has never expressed it that way, although she gave tremendous respect for Maya Moore, Cheryl Miller and Lynette Woodard, etc.
  10. https://www.cbssports.com/wnba/news/2024-wnba-all-star-game-fevers-caitlin-clark-leads-early-projections-for-team-wnba-roster-to-face-team-usa/ Nneka Ogwumike -- F, Seattle Storm Ogwumike is no longer in the mix for Team USA after her controversial snub for the Tokyo Olympics, and she'll have a chance to show them what they're missing in the All-Star Game. The veteran forward has been as good as ever in her first season with the Storm. Her 18.2 points per game are second on the team, as are her 7.7 rebounds. As usual, she's been extremely efficient and is leading the league in field goal percentage at 59.8. Arike Ogunbowale -- G, Dallas Wings After being snubbed for a Team USA spot, Ogunbowale is a lock for this year's All-Star Game, just as she has been for the past three seasons. She's second in the league in scoring at 26.4 points per game and is chipping in 4.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and a league-leading 3.2 steals. Those are career-high marks across the board, and with her scoring ability she should be one of the favorites to take home All-Star MVP. In fact, the last time the league used this format, that's just what she did. Caitlin Clark -- G, Indiana Fever Clark missed out on a Team USA spot, but she'll have a chance to show the selection committe they made the wrong decision during the All-Star Game. The No. 1 overall pick will almost certainly be voted in by the fans, and she'll deserve the honor. Despite facing some of the most intense defensive pressure in the league, Clark is enjoying a historic rookie season. She's averaging 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and six assists per game and is 15th in the league in scoring and fourth in assists. Dearica Hamby, F, LA Sparks Those are the four most glaring omissions from the US Olympic Team. On the other side, 42 year-old Diana Taurasi, Britney Griner and Chelsea Gray, PG/Aces, still hasn't played since WNBA 2023 Finals...are the three weakest or controversial members. Although Griner has actually been playing really well in recent weeks, fwiw.
  11. See Torkelson, too...so many questions about aluminum bats and why a plethora of homers are flying out in all directions at the top of the draft with the big time hitters. Be wary. Keep building up that internal depth of players who profile at SS and CF in the big leagues. Elite Pitching is always going to be a need with a team so a verse now to extensions and expensive prime years FAs.
  12. In addition to Griffin -- a potential star if his hit tool plays above current forecasts -- there could be four other prepsters taken in the top 20. That group includes California shortstop Bryce Rainer, a lefty hitter with pop considered the top overall high-school player in the class; athletic and hard-throwing Arizona lefty Cam Caminiti; sweet-swinging and fast-running Texas infielder Theo Gillen; and Louisiana righty William Schmidt, who possesses a loud combination of velocity and spin. cbssports.com

  16. For some odd reason, the entire article was available here in China through VPN, even though the NY Times is officially banned.
  17. See 2023 KC Royals with 106 losses.
  18. Reese always takes pretty typical wild swings with her arms down in the paint...so it looks worse. Slowed down by a factor of 3-5X, it does look a lot more violent than it really was on replay. She popped right back up (this time her teammates "had her back" this time), and in her comments in post-game, Clark didn't call it a "non basketball play" like two weeks ago with Chennedy Carter. And of course Thomas with the CT Sun actually got kicked out a game for her foul against Reese, but it got about 5-10% of the attention Clark is getting with the white/black angles.
  19. Where is the thread at SoxTalk? Link? Guess I was either busy or apathetic last October...or watching the post-season instead.
  20. If there's already a thread, it's not very easy to locate by just typing Dave Wilder into search...and now you guys are back to arguing about the reasons for the lack of productivity again from the Dominican Republic, pretty sure it was Rafael Santana who was originally tasked with cleaning that mess up. But it hardly gets mentioned what has actually happened down there in the last 15 years. Jerry Krause was working as a scout in Brazil near the end of his life, they were "sorta" productive with Andre Rienzo and Anderson Gomes, but that first wave apparently dried up or they moved on after Krause's death. https://www.southsidesox.com/minors/2013/2/11/3975216/the-tawdry-tangled-history-of-the-white-sox-latin-american-operations Louis Silverio has also been with the White Sox for some time, first as a player from 2014-2018, then as a Director of the team’s Dominican Republic Academy from 2018-2022. He is taking this new Manager role with looks to be an expansion beyond just responsibilities in the Dominican Republic...(this Silverio is not related to the one from the Wilder/original skimming scandal). But we have hardly heard a THING about that time period at the White Sox Dominican training academy. It's almost like a black hole...that sucks everything into its vortex but almost nothing productive comes out of.
  21. Removing Kopech won't make much of a difference, but if you add DeJong, Pham, Flexen, Wilson, Banks, Clevinger, Crochet, Robert, Jimenez, and Moncada all together, you'd have to expect closer to a 15-25% winning percentage. Obviously, Robert and Crochet might not be matches right now (value wise), and Moncada and Jimenez could be stuck with the team and vice versa, but yikes. Honestly don't even have any idea what the remaining rotation would look like. I guess Thorpe, Nastrini, Cannon, probably Clevinger...then whoever they decide to go with from the Barons' remaining list of guys, other than Schultz. Which means Berroa, Inciarte, Bush, Eder, Adams, etc.
  22. the entire organization is even MORE hopeless than any could have imagined. It's almost unbelievable, but what does he really have to gain here because he was clearly never going to get another job in MLB (maybe abroad, Korea/Japan) no matter what??? White or black, that avenue was cut off as he was made an example out of. His reputation was already described, and if that wasn't enough, there was the channeling of monies to Club Burn (gay bar) in the Phoenix area. Even in the sports world of today (look at all the arguments over the WNBA in recent weeks and months), that was just a massive "double hit" that was never going to be overcome at the ownership level (Dusty Baker was seemingly the only figure in baseball at all who reached out to him.) It has now been 16 years since the Dominican buscones/skimming scandal, and almost nothing has changed with the Sox being able to scout/evaluate Dominicans. Ironically, the two best were accidental (Tatis Sr. directing his son towards the Sox first) and Eloy Jimenez coming over in the Quintana trade. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/4853621/2023/09/12/white-sox-exec-bonus-skimming/
  23. Highly unlikely they trade him anyway with the injuries to Darvish/Musgrove and still right smack dab in the middle of the WC race.
  24. And now Thorpe as the centerpiece of the Cease deal when the likes of Snelling, Lesko and Mazur were also theoretically available. Surely, Preller blocked the first two, but it was realistically Thorpe vs. Mazur (Univ of Iowa).
