  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) The slider is not inherently a more stressful pitch. It is only more stressful when you drop down to get more slide to it as opposed to drop. If you throw it properly it's no more stressful than a fastball, the problem is many pitchers change either the elbow or shoulder angle to make it move more. This makes it a better pitch and tougher to hit but causes more stress. Do you think it was sliders that did him in, looking at the delivery? QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 13, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) The guy with the best changeup of this generation has had his career derailed by shoulder injuries. Just wanted to point it out. Yeah, no guarantees. I'm sure you've read where Sale has been encouraged to throw more changes and less sliders due to this belief, though. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 13, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Ben Badler ‏@BenBadler 1m Alfredo Despaigne having a Dominican passport raises a ton of questions. Keep a close eye on this one. Cryptic but interesting. If he were only lefty...Then again, could make Tank prime trade bait.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 13, 2014 -> 11:03 AM) Sanchez and Recchia, both pitching today, are guys that are dominating while behind the age curve. Would like to see both move up soon. Sanchez is 24 and should be in A+ or more ideally AA at that age, Recchia turned 25 just after the season started and should be in AA at least. Agreed. These should both happen soon.
  3. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?c...mp;ymd=20140513 Kanny this morning - Sanchez Charlotte - Paulino B'Ham - Snodgress WS - Recchia Sanchez strong again so far, and should be in WS soon.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Abreu is going all in on trying to eat that baseball. Only Mateen Cleaves could do that, maybe Ginger Lynn.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 12, 2014 -> 11:21 PM) Agreed, it's a big blow to the game. He is fun to watch pitch. His velocity has dropped Erik Johnson-like in his last few starts. Just sucks because the slider is Sale's most devastating pitch. As bmags said though, in a way you have to ride your guy and hope for the best. In a way, that's why I'm not too concerned about guys like Kolek (real high velocity at 18) or Rodon (real high pitch counts) to an extent. Risk is always going to be part of it, but maybe these prospect showcases and 8-9 months of pitching annually needs to end, pronto. But these things probably make money, so good luck with that.
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 13, 2014 -> 07:25 AM) Has Mederios at #51. I'd take him if Reetz is gone. Kodi dropped from 38 in the previous list. Wonder why - could be growing fear of his mechs. plus near-total lack of competition in HI. Bunch of guys think he's a 1st round talent. Let's do it. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 13, 2014 -> 07:12 AM) Braxton Davidson at both 24 and 30. That's a bold call. They're twin brothers with the same name, obviously. One of them plays 1B as well as OF.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Yes, no way Semien strikes out. Leury was only 5-14 with 3 doubles vs. LHP up until that point. Obviously he should have been pulled. Anyone can see that. You're right, he's actually decent against LHP. The true lunacy is batting him leadoff against a RHP (you should look those #'s up, too) and pinch running for Dunn's meaningless run.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) I like the Peavy comp on Danish, though for a bit different reason. Danish's stuff is unconventional. He isn't a guy you feel like you have seen before, and that makes hitters uncomfortable. It is the same reason submariners and knuckballers find niche's on teams. Peavy has a really unconventional motion and stuff too. Even with his reduced pitch speeds, he still gets lots of outs and K's. Danish strikes me in the same vein. Hawk often talks about a pitcher throwing 90 or so, appearing much faster to the hitter depending upon the delivery. TD is an extreme case of this.
  9. I don't think Semien would have swung at a pitch above his head. The worst hitter on the 25 got the most AB's. You're all ours, RV.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:46 PM) It seems like the players that are performing the best (Johnson, Ravelo, Danish) have lower ceilings than the guys that are struggling. Even if Davidson turns his season around, it wouldn't shock me at all if he's used as a trade chip. It seems the Sox really like Gillaspie. Johnson and Danish have plenty of ceiling, Danish especially. In this radar-gun-ruled world of pitching scouting (which is largely responsible for the rash of injuries), he'll likely be vastly underrated until he's dominating in the majors - but it's coming. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) I would love to see Danish throwing 95-97/98 like Peavy in his absolute prime. But he's not anywhere close to that right now, is he? Mostly low 90's, 89-91/92, yes? The sun doesn't rise and set on the radar gun. He's going to be just fine.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:43 PM) How is his stuff even worse this year than last year? Good question. It appears this is what we're going to get now. And it doesn't figure to be good enough very often.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2014 -> 05:59 PM) That only makes sense if they're planning to leave Semien in the utility role in Chicago. Then there's another looming question about how to handle the Keppinger situation. Kepp is the proverbial bridge that you cross when you get to it. I can envision a "setback" in his recovery.
  13. The Fernandez situation is sad, but almost predictable, imo. In watching his highlights recently, it appeared that his slider was a very stressful pitch and that he threw it a lot. Haven't found the stats as to the percentages of what he was throwing, but he was falling off the mound every time. I know very, very little about pitching mechanics, but I figured this wasn't a good thing. Almost posted about it a couple days ago - I guess I would have looked smart. But this sucks, and is bad for the game, obviously. Something (many things) needs to change about the way these kids are being brought along. In the meantime, more changeups, less sliders, Mr. Sale please.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ May 12, 2014 -> 12:46 PM) Dan Bernstein would probably advise to trade down. No green needed. He's so clueless about baseball, he probably thinks they can.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2014 -> 12:19 PM) Not sure where caufield got his, but Seth Lasko (Charlotte Observer beat reporter) had him usually 88-90 with the FB, but also said he got stronger as the game went on. He did finish much better today. But where has the velo gone?
  16. Sanchez up to .718 OPS and rising. A HR away from the cycle - that one will be difficult. Davidson with 2 hits and a double now - nice reverse-jinx fathom. Where you getting the EJohnson velo from, caulfield?
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 11, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Dude, I don't know where you come up with some of these narratives. We're going to have a ton of money available next offseason, way more than this past winter when we were hard after Tanaka. To say we can't afford James Shields is ridiculous and pretending our attendance this year will have a major impact on next year's offseason is also crazy. The Sox will spend big money if they think they're close. Given how this year is going, I think it's probable we'll major players in free agency. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) I swear if Kolek is on the board and we pass for a next tier college arm, I will flip out. I dont' know what happens to Kolek but he is an extremely rare talent and we would be lucky to have a shot at drafting him (or really any of the top 3 guys to be frank). ^^^^^^^ Maybe there will be a lot of pressure locally for the Stros to take TK, leaving us with Aiken, probably. If we truly don't love TK, this may be the most hopeful scenario.
  18. The recent words from Jones are good. He's genuinely pain-free for the first time all spring. Should be just a time situation, and they shouldn't rush anything, but I think there's a good chance we see him shortly after the ASB.
  19. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 9, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) They've got two solid mid guys in Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood, they've got CJ Edwards, Steven Pierce, and Arodys Vizcaino on the farm, a glut of OF prospects to trade, and you'd expect they'd be active in free agency if they felt they were on the verge. Again, it may not all work out, but they presumably plan for it to work out, and if it does, 2.5 from now is realistic. Also, generally speaking, I think there are very few teams with no realistic chance of being competitive 3 seasons from any given point. So if you disagree with that, we may just have different thresholds for "realistic chance." I think you mean Pierce Johnson. Also, Vizcaino won't be a starter anytime soon, if ever.
  20. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 9, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) Supposedly Hahn was on Sports Talk Live yesterday. Anyone know if he was there in person or he phoned in? It would be hard for him to be there and at Beede's start. Way to get after it, gumshoe!
  21. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 9, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) I wish there was a BABIPx that factored in rolling over weak 6-3's. Before long, average velo leaving the bat will be factored in, illuminating the bad contact vs. luck debate for individual performance.
  22. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 9, 2014 -> 04:11 PM) Kiley McDaniel ‏@kileymcd 44m That top 3 team had scouting dir & GM at Beede's start last night & is rumored tobe looking outside the top 3 talents http://sbb.scout.com/2/1401310.html Yikes. That has to be us right? Gotta be, unless it isn't. Don't like it, but it may be just diligence. And maybe they really don't like Kolek a whole lot/too much velo too soon etc. - I'm kinda getting that vibe.
  23. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 9, 2014 -> 03:45 PM) Just saw Kanny in NJ last night and can report back on the team, briefly: - Pete Rose Jr. is a real vocal manager, and great guy that really loves his players, keeps it loose and looks just like his dad - Adam Engel has a real nice build and appears slightly bigger than 6'1 but didn't do much yesterday - Tyler Barnette doesn't really have anything special about him but he pitched a great game yesterday in awful conditions - Andrew Mitchell has a great build and was throwing mid-90s in relief - Tyler Danish, who I didn't get to see pitch even in the 'pen seems really short (like not even 6 ft), but seems like he's of high energy - Omar Narvaez has a great swing and a decent amount of pop but a pretty strange stocky build - Danny Hayes reminds me of a skinnier Dan Black, also displayed a lot of pop - Thomore may breakout this season, looked great yesterday and has great stats, not too much power but makes hard contact - Thomore, Hayes, and Engel all have similar builds - Shyrock is real tiny and didn't do much yesterday - Williams has a lazy swing, somewhat half-ass like 2011 Dunn - Trey Michalczewski is probably the top prospect on this team, great hitter, great stats, and played amazing D yesterday, makes play look easy even in rough conditions - Rondon didn't do much offensively or defensively yesterday but looked Alexei-like defensively in between innings fielding - Jose Brito appears WAY taller than 6'0 and about 20 pounds below 175 lbs, real lanky and was throwing real well, strange mechanics and wind-up Good to hear about Trey M's D. Really hope he can stick at hot corner.
