Are we really out of contention this coming season?

If the White Sox play aggressive team baseball in 2007 nobody is going to beat them. Aggressive Team Baseball -

QUOTE(shipps @ Jan 14, 2007 -> 12:27 AM) Dont need to carry a breathalyzer,Every drink is worth .02 and every hour your body burns off about .02.It is simple math really. A beer is worth half a drink, right? So if a ball game lasts 3-1/2 hours I can have 14 beers? I like your arithemetic, I have to forward this to my wife! (Reality check, I drive to the game, she drives home and if I have more than 3 or 4 I can't read my freaking score card. )

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jan 11, 2007 -> 11:46 AM) the Media reads these boards ........... Im always impressed that someone in the media will bring up a subject that was talked about online. Pretty Cool Hanger, have you noticed they read the cub boards more often than the White Sox boards? -
Just for discussion. In a tight game in the 6th or 7th who do you bring in to face Morneau and Mauer or Hafner and Martinez? You need MacDougal, Thornton and Jenks to finish out the game, who do you use to get to them?

QUOTE(bjam44 @ Jan 10, 2007 -> 10:36 AM) Can Toby Hall play 1b?? alot of fomer/older catchers do. Just a thought He's played 2 games there, in '05 with the Rays. They'd have to take a look at him in ST to know for sure. Be nice to know in case of an emergency but I really don't see a match up where you would want both AJ and Hall in the game at the same time. Without another catcher on the roster you would have no options left. Maybe Zoomer can catch?

I think Anderson should be made to earn his keep this year or be sent down. If he plays in spring training like he did early last year, he shouldn't make the team, even if he breaks camp with them, if he has a month in the Majors like his last September he should get a ticket to Charlotte. If needed, the White Sox should go through every player in the system, Sweeney, Torero, Owens - even Nanita, before accepting another season like last year. That said, he has so much talent that if he were to click he could be on the all star team. He is a tantalizing young player and I hope he makes it but you can't lose another year waiting for him.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 7, 2007 -> 10:17 AM) He may hit 500 home runs, but now 500 homeruns is not an automatic Hall of Famer since so many people are reaching it. I agrtee that Paulie has a squeeky clean resume, but he would, IMO, have to win an couple of MVPs or at least one coupled with the 500 home runs to have a shot. Realistically, Paulie has never been a top 5 player at his position at any time, this fact will really hurt him since he has never been elite, just uber-solid. 20 players have hit 500 HR. The only players who are not in the HOF are: Barry Bonds Ken Griffey Jr Mark McGwire Rafael Palmeiro Sammy Sosa This is Mac's first year on the ballot, the others are still playing or just recently retired. No one with eligibility has hit 500 and not made the Hall. It took Jimmie Foxx 7 ballots to get in but he eventually made it. I think any untainted player who gets 500 will make it, perhaps not in the first year but they'll get in. I don't know if the roiders will make it, but I think it will be because of the scandal, not because hitting 500 Hr has been devalued. JMO.

QUOTE(BaseballNick @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 11:13 PM) .282 AVG 36HR 118RBI Zero chance of making the Hall, but he will challenge for the all-time GIDP crown. Actually, this would be a pretty nice list to be on. Player_________________ AB GIDP Cal Ripken__________ 11,551 350 Hank Aaron__________ 12,364 328 Carl Yastrzemski____ 11,988 323 Dave Winfield_______ 11,003 319 Eddie Murray________ 11,336 316 Jim Rice_____________ 8,225 315 Julio Franco_________ 8,587 310 Harold Baines________ 9,908 298 Brooks Robinson_____ 10,654 297 Rusty Staub__________ 9,720 297 Kong is currently #151 on the list with 172 GIDP in 4,561 AB. He's always been at about 4% of his AB. To catch Ripken he would need to play about 8 more seasons at his current level. Should he also average 32 Dings a year during that span he will get to 500 at age 38. Not impossible (4 yrs @ 40 + 4 yrs @ 23) and coupled with his squeaky clean record, ALCS MVP and WS grand slam I think it could put him in the Hall.

Juan's range factor is a little inflated because he takes every single pop up he can get to, even if he has to push a teamate out of the way. But with that arm of his, he also makes throws on many many balls that most shortstops just stick in their pocket. Cintron is not a disaster, but he is a big step down from Juan Uribe.

Pinerio to close? The last time we saw him was when the Mariners came to Chicago in September, he being tried out in the role by them. On the 21st, he threw 2 scoreless inning in a 9-0 Mariners rout. The Sox pulled their starters before he faced them. On the 22nd, he came in down a run with a man on 1B and immediately gave up a home run to Kong. 3 runs and 7 batters later the inning ended when the Sox ran into an out on the bases. On the 23rd, he came in tied with the bases loaded and immediately gave up a Grand Slam to Juan Uribe. I don't know what the Red Sox see in him, but if they try to close with him he's going to get Francona fired.

Parque had one of the best "I just gave up a home run" moves in the Majors. As the ball sailed over the fence, he would put his hands on his knees, bend half way over and stare at his shoes. Sometimes the catcher would have to wait for him to look up again before he could throw him a new ball. He's a little guy with a big heart and a big mouth, I've always wondered why they didn't shut him down and fix him when he hurt his arm, and it was obvious. He may have burned his bridges with management and the trainers by insisting he was OK when the whole world could see he wasn't throwing well. He was certainly a stubborn SOB in those years. I hope his arm is better and he has a lot of success.

QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Dec 21, 2006 -> 09:42 PM) Is Willie Harris available? QUOTE(sox-r-us' @ Dec 30, 2006 -> 03:56 AM) I would prefer Carl Jurassic Everett Joking aside, Willie signed a minor league deal and is a non roster STI with the Braves. With Giles gone, he will get a look at 2B. I haven't heard a peep about Everett since Seattle let him go in August. I wonder what he weighs. If he were in shape I'd think somebody would have already taken a chance on him.

Don't know if he qualifies but Geoff Blum, who didn't do much in the regular season, made a loud noise in the WS.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 25, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) Jenks won't be an issue until 2011 and even then there's still a 50/50 chance he breaks down before then and the Sox don't even have to worry about paying him big money. Cold. true, but still cold.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 24, 2006 -> 02:19 AM) I think anybody with a brain thinks we coulda got more for BMac. I appreciate the logic but wouldn't yu all agree with me on that? That makes this a bad trade. KW on the topic, this is about as revealing a quote I've ever seen a baseball man make:

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 24, 2006 -> 08:05 AM) I finally got over here and I am LMAO. Fans of both teams hate this trade. All of my Ranger fans think the Rangers got majorly hosed on this deal. They want the GM strung up like Christmas lights. Prospects are prospects in my book. I've watched waaaay to many not pan out. (where is big Jon Rauch?) I like B-Mac more because he posted here, but as a pitcher, I'll take a couple extra top to near top prospects for one top prospect. You're the second guy in this thread to dis Jon Rauch as if he was a complete bust. He isn't a super star but is maturing into a good Major League pitcher. Jon was second in the National League with 85 appearances last year, throwing 91.3 innings with an ERA of 3.35. He went 4-5 on a team that lost 91 games. The National's GM Bowden has been talking about adding him to the rotation for 2007 but will leave it up to new manager Manny Acta. Rauch was traded along with Gary Majewski (now with Cincinnatti) for Carl Everett in 2004.

I've never seen these kids so I don't know how this trade will work out but Kenny Williams is the gutsiest GM in baseball.

Fantastic!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 12:44 PM) I don't have a problem with giving him a chance in the big leagues, I just think that it would be better off for everyone involved to wait another season on him. The kid's only 21 years old right now, he'll be 22 in February. There is nothing wrong with letting him wait until he's 23 to reach the big leagues, especially given that the Sox have been watching him gradually develop a power stroke while they've had him. There is no reason to rush him. He may be better than Podsednik, but he's hopefully not going to be that much better, and he may be better than Anderson, but especially in 200 at bats, he's not going to be that much better, and just being able to take another year and get ready to move up will probably be the best thing even for his career, let alone the team. He can earn a spot in 2008 by having a good 2007 at AAA. And even If we don't lose JD after 2007, well, then he looks like an idea LF candidate or trade bait. Dye is a given, as a veteran Podsednik is a sure bet and Ozuna will be on the team. Baring another move, the other two spots should go to who ever is playing the best baseball among BA, Sweeney, Terrero and Owens -regardless to age or contract. And not just spring training, if one guy, and I include Podsednik, struggles during the year then bring up the next one. If a productive rotation hasn't emerged by the fourth of July then pay the price and go outside and get somebody. This isn't the instructional league.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 08:44 PM) Perhaps. But there are plenty of other pitchers in the history of baseball that didn't break down after given money -- plenty of pitchers who have won twenty games and Cy Youngs and we don't have a lot of them because our organization doesn't understand pitching beyond "We need it to win." In the history of baseball 27 pitchers have had salaries of $10 million or more dollars, of these only Pedro Martinez 1999, Randy Johnson 2001, 2002, Andy Pettite 2003 and Curt Shilling 2005 won 20 or more games. Only Matinez, Johnson and Roger Clemons have won Cy Youngs at that salary level. Three former White Sox pitchers have won the Cy Young. Bartolo Colon, Pete Vuckovich and Steve Stone. The Sox lost Vuckovich in his second pro year to the expansion draft, Stone was traded to the grub in the Ron Santo deal [yick]. Colon left as a FA after 2003, won the Cy in 2005 and broke down in the play offs. Last season he was 1-5 in 56 1/3 innings for the Angels at a salary of $14 million dollars. I think there are situations to go long years and dollars with pitching but the player has to be truly exceptional, like Johann Santana. I love the Sox guys but, objectively, none of them are at such a level, they are stonger as a group than as individuals.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 01:53 PM) I think the Royals and their fans are going to be most impressed by the play of Ross Gload. So goes Pods, so goes the White Sox offense. The first half of '05, the second half of '05 and all of '06. The Sox won 75% of the games in which he had at least one hit. We can only hope that he's due for a bounce back. Your post lead me to think about how they will use him because I felt his arm , which in turn led me to wonder how Buddy Bell was doing. He had a cancer on his throat removed and missed the late part of the 2nd half last season. Turns out he is doing great, he said his strength is not 100% but improving and he will be in spring training leading the Royals into the 2007 season. Here's his quote Good for Buddy!

QUOTE(astralpanda @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 06:43 PM) I said around 30/100. He went 30/94 last season and I can only see him getting better but that's just me. In my view the problem with going long years with Crede is his back. He was having a wonderful year until it started acting up. I just looked at his September stats and got a shock. After he missed the first 3 games of the Cleveland series he came back to hit just .129 with 1 HR and 3 RBI in his final 17 games, 54 AB. You may also recall he didn't move well on the field either. When he's hurting its like turning a switch and I think he's a tremendous long term risk. Joe might get his long term deal from somebody, look what Magglio got, but I doubt it will be from the White Sox.
