  1. QUOTE(qwerty @ Mar 10, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) I know i am not an elitest and i am sure dorf and 3eb are not but i may be wrong. They're not, I never see them at the meetings.
  2. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Mar 9, 2005 -> 06:05 AM) Isn't Giambi in the same boat? He's got to go to DC. If I understand it right, Giambi coughed up everything to the Grand Jury under immunity. Bonds admitted to nothing except flaxseed oil. Proof he was aware that the substance was actually a prescription drug at that time could leave him open to prosecution. Not for taking the drug, but for lying to the jury about it. This is just speculation on my part; sports radio is not the best place to get legal opinion, but that’s the theory.
  3. QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 8, 2005 -> 11:47 PM) Frank should take a limo-bus to Washington then. Kind of interesting that Bonds isn't being subpoenaed though, isn't it? Are you thinking immunity issues? Bonds could be a target for prosecution in the Balco mess.
  4. Maybe the injury has a silver lining, he couldn't hit the wall before.
  5. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Mar 8, 2005 -> 09:45 AM) Cicotte started 3 of the last 8 games in the 1919 season. You can verify that for yourself at retrosheet.org which is a great site by the way. Great Baseball Website Oh my God, you've turned Juggernaut on to retrosheet! Buy another 100 gig for the server! Retro is indeed a great site, the Grand Daddy of them all! If you like stats, and Jugger certainly does, it's nirvana.
  6. Here is a link to a law school project about the scandel: Black Sox Trial Check out page 5 of Joe Jackson's sworn grand jury testimony, in the Confessions and Court Records page, where he states Chick Gandel promised him $20,000 and he personally recieved $5,000 from Lefty Williams. There is evidence. Other teams of the era were dirty too, and the Sox took the fall for all of them -but they were unquestionably dirty themselves.
  7. QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 4, 2005 -> 05:40 AM) Frank's being called as nothing more than someone that can give, or shoot down, credibility to Jose's stories. Jose and Frank were more than just casual friends at one point. I'm sure they just want to ask him about that time. Steff, I think he’d be ‘victim’ type witness, the congressmen always trot out a couple of these when they stage a sensational hearing. But I doubt Frank’s the sort to be sobbing for the cameras like Sally Struthers, crying over his lost MVP. No good can come from this; steroid testing is a reality, the battle is already over. Frank Thomas shouldn’t go unless he is subpoenaed. He has nothing to do with it, let Waxman get on TV by leeching off of someone else’s fame.
  8. From ESPN: Waxman's just a big dick, he'll say anything and ruin anybody to get his name in the papers, he's the congressional equivalent of Jay Mariotti. I don't know Davis but expect no good to come from this.
  9. QUOTE(ptatc @ Mar 3, 2005 -> 07:38 PM) The important part of the article is that since Frank fractured the navicular (the keystone of the arch of the foot) he has not been able to stregthen his legs. I'm sure he was non-weight bearing for quite awhile. With his hitting mechanics and any mechanics for that matter it all starts with the legs. That will be the determining factor. But if anyone can get him back quickly its Hermie. What do you do with a guy like that? Resistance machines? Stretching? Running? He's going to want to hit the first day, do you let him? I know you haven't seen him but what would be the usual protocol?
  10. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) Helms is a Yost favorite because they were both together in Atlanta basically. And he thinks he can have a comeback year. He did hit 23 HR for him in '03.
  11. I don't buy it unless they are going to move Crede for a starting SS so Uribe can take the utility role he is most suited for. Has Crede tee'd anybody off at camp, or is there a real good SS out there I don't know about?
  12. Basically the owners have formed a cabal and when a talented young American baseball player comes out of high school or college he is only allowed to negotiate with one team, this is the draft. His choices at that time are to sign or sit out until the next years draft. Only the most promising players, such as JD Drew, Joe Borchard or Jared Weaver can take real advantage of this leverage. For most it is take it or leave it. Once signed a player is bound to the club in the minor leagues for 6 years, at which time he can elect free agency. Until 6 years of service he can accept the club’s offer each year or retire. If he makes the big leagues he is bound to that team for an additional of 2 years of ML service. There are minimum salaries agreed to by the union. After 2 years, if a player is in the top 17% of all players according to a rating system agreed to by the union, or after 3 years of ML service for everybody else he is eligible for salary arbitration -but cannot negotiate with any other team. After 6 years service MLB, a player may opt for free agency and is able to negotiate with any team. If he is a good player, this is the first time in his career he can negotiate with more than one team.
  13. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 02:26 AM) Don't worry about it. I've got really poor reading comprehension.(My ACT scores in HS went something like this. Math 32, Science 30, Other Category 27, Reading 12) So I tried to dumb it down because I know I didn't follow, and I thought I had a solid grasp of the concept. Yasny's so old his Math ACT was XXVIII.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 12:40 AM) Edited by danman for ridiculously bad grammar by Jason. 'I like guys who no where to put the ball?' You have to be really out of it to write that. How do you confuse no with know? /End rant Give him a break, he was speaking Ozzie.
  15. Jamie Burke will beat out Ben Davis.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 11:14 AM) I was going to a while back, but they don't save the ST archieves for free. YOu have to pay to see the old ones. I ought to start saving his columns.... That is if I can get my cats to stop pissing on them... Can I buy your cats a beer?
  17. From this day in history at the Hall of Fame web site. .288 - 22 - 84 got him released! It would have been a career achievement for a lot of guys.
  18. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Feb 24, 2005 -> 06:36 PM) The only reason I'm even saying this is because last time we had this much hoopla over a pitcher, his name was ... Jon Rauch. Here I thought the second coming of Roger Clemens was emerging from our system, and when he arrived - at a game I attended - he got rocked for about 11 runs in the first inning? I'm not sure the exact run total, as I was probably too drunk by the end of the inning to remember...mostly because I did not want to remember...but whatever it was, it was BAD. Big Jon has a chance to break into the National's rotation this year. The Nat's notes say "Rauch was impressive during his short stint with the Expos last year, going 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA after being called up from Triple-A Edmonton in early August." I think he can be a pretty good MLB pitcher, but he peed off KW and is gone. You can't give up on a guy just because he got splattered in one game you saw. If the only game you saw Buehrle was when the Jankees rocked him for 7 in the first inning last year you'd be jeering him too. McCarthy should get a start or two and with so many games on Comcast, I hope we can see what he's got for ourselves.
  19. Now that the bonus baby aura has worn off, Joe will have to play his way into the big leagues. Whats fair is fair. I'd like to see him again, because that would mean he earned his way back up the ladder.
  20. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 23, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) Last year, 2003...both years, that is what hurt us the most in the long run. Hell, if we had a Cory Lidle in the #5 spot in 2003 for the whole year, we probably would have won the division. And I promised myself I wouldn't look back at 2003 anymore. A bit of revisionist history. For the past two years it was the 4 spot that killed the White Sox, in the person of Danny Wright. Both years he got hurt and set off the domino's of destruction. Two years ago the 5 man was supposed to be Estaban Loaiza and he won 20 some games. Last year it was Schoenny, who was good until he got sore. One could argue that had Wright been as effective as hoped, Schoe wouldn't have gotten so many innings and would not have been hurt himself. So keep an eye ths spring on the guys who won't make the cut initially, they may turn out to be the key to the season.
  21. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) They haven't even played a ST game yet and Ozzie has already made up his mind? Ozzie just likes to chirp. Unless Pods is much better than Rowand in CF, and from what I have heard he is not, then it would be stupid to waste Rowand's arm in LF. His reasoning is Aaron is less likly to kill himself in left than in center. I don't know if I buy that, the walls in left are just as hard as in center and when you count the foul lines, there are more of them. I watched some Brewers on MLB TV to get a look at Podsednik, he doesn't get a jump like Rowand but he is mighty fast, he can really run down a ball. It might come down to whether Podsednik can handle left because his speed won't cover up his mistakes like in center.
  22. Lots of different ways to propose. I remember about a guy who sat crying at the kitchen table on the morning of the 20th wedding anniversary. His wife said, “What’s the matter? Today is a happy day.” He said, “Remember 20 years ago when your father caught us fooling around in the back of my car and said if I didn’t marry you he’d put me in jail for 20 years?” He stared at his coffee and said, “I would have gotten out today.”
  23. Mike Wallace is going to interview him. I didn't know he was still alive. Just googled his bio, he was born in 1918, thats 87 years ago. Wow.
  24. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 13, 2005 -> 01:05 PM) Or Burke may be added back. I don't know. Jamie has already cleared wavers so he doesn't have to be added unless the makes the team.
