QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2010 -> 08:21 AM) Probably because they are organization guys and it doesn't matter if they are comfortable or not. Yeah, especially with Bellamy. They just moved him up a week or so ago. They don't need to be that lightning fast with him. I do like Burdie though. He's had control issues early, but he's been able to get strikeouts throughout his pro career.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) 20% K rate in a 600 AB season is 120 K's a year. That'd be quite an improvement. Basically...the higher his K rate goes above that...the more BB he needs to take and the more power he needs to show to be effecitve. It would be quite an improvement. I didn't say he would do it, I just said that would be ideal lol.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) I'm more concerned about his ability to retire righty's. The movement he gets on his FB/CH is ridiculous and should/has made him very effective vs. LHB, but he lacks a put away breaking ball to retire the righty's. That's my take on him anyway. Yeah, he has done well against lefties. Even this year his K/BB numbers are far superior against lefties.

QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) I know someone who had this. If this is the diagnosis, wow... a month might be extremely optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends his season. Yeah, the more I read about it the worse it sounds. Hopefully given the fact that he's a professional athlete, he is in good enough shape to fight it better than most.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) I might be a little late to this discussion, but I recall watching the Braves game the other night, and they highlighted Hayward's K-rate as over 34%. Is it more acceptable for him to have such a high K-rate because he has more power than Danks? The thing with Heyward is that his minor league K-rate was below 20. As I mentioned, guys will strike out more in the Majors like Heyward is doing. That's a rather alarming number, but it's awfully early. QUOTE (The Baconator @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 05:52 PM) Thanks. I guess my concern is WHAT IS an acceptable K-rate for Danks at his position, given his particular role and skill set? What would he have to get that rate down to so that we don't view it was an issue anymore? Ideally less than 20%.

Phegley diagnosed with I-T-P syndrome Says he will miss another month. Terrible situation for him.

Barons won 5-4, blowing lead in the bottom of the 8th, taking it back in top of 9th before giving up one to make it interesting in the bottom half. Gallagher 2-3, RBI, R, BB, K. Marrero (he's on a roll) 2-5, 3-run HR, K. Sanchez 2-4, 2B. Shirek 7 IP, R, K, BB, 5 H. Corley .2 IP, 2 R in his Barons debut.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) And by the way, IsoOBP is usually just written as IsoD (D for discipline), and K% is typically SO/AB not PA. I've seen K% more for PA. It makes sense. A walk is an opportunity to strike out where the player did not. Just because he didn't hit the ball in play doesn't mean he didn't show skill to avoid striking out.

QUOTE (daggins @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Actually, yeah. He's striking out about 30% of the time, about the same as Danks, as a 21 year old in AAA. That's encouraging. He definitely needs to cut that by like, 5% or more, but he's got time. Viciedo's K rate was fine last year. I wouldn't declare a K rate a problem less than 3 weeks into the season. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 08:25 PM) And btw, I think Trayce Thompson ends up a top-25 prospect in all of baseball, he is definitely our top prospect since Borchard in terms of ceiling (granted Borch never reached it). Thompson does seem to have that type of upside and reputation growing. When you are compared to Mike Stanton early on and then start performing like it, you know scouts and experts are going to love you.

You bastard. Start the post with nothing in it and edit later to make it look like you were first.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 24, 2010 -> 12:08 AM) Silverio seems to be a lost cause, although he did homer, but he's hitting only .167. He just turned 19. He may be over matched this season, but he could play in Kanny next year and still be at an age appropriate level.
-
QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 11:13 PM) Danks a little bit more difficult to project, as unlike Fields he walks a fair amount and has maintained a roughly consistent strikeout rate across increasing levels of competition. Danks doesn't walk that much more than Fields did, but I think we agree. I feel like you disagreed with me and agreed with me in the same post. Danks' number of strikeouts aren't the only thing to worry about, but they should be a real concern. I'm just hoping he can be an average offensive player.

The K rate is still there, but it's way too early to make any judgments. I just like the fact that he's been praised for his work ethic by people outside the organization.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) if he keeps hitting, he isn't going back down. Yeah, but I posted that before his first game. He could be our #1 prospect a year from now. Hudson should be graduated by then, Flowers could be. I figure I would counter my previous negativity with an absurd amount of positivity in this post.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 21, 2010 -> 02:51 PM) No, I know that. He's not playing above Kanny this year. I think he started this season in extended spring training in prep for a short-season team. I hope that's been scrapped, and he's staying in Kannapolis. Considering he was moved up for a non-outfield injury I think they just moved him up because he was progressing and doing well this spring.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 20, 2010 -> 09:57 PM) He's taking a nice step forward. Hopefully, this promotion was a kick in the pants. I think he earned the promotion in the first place. Baseball Beginnings sure likes him. They aren't alone. Kid has talent. I'm trying to stay reserved, but man I'm really happy to see this from him.

Jordan Danks and the strikeout Jordan Danks has had success throughout his minor league career despite striking out at an alarming rate. Can he achieve an acceptable level of success in the Majors like this or will he need to cut down on the strikeouts? more... It's fitting that we had a discussion about this in the game thread for the day while I was writing this. Danks seems to be a heated topic lately.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 20, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) Just did some quick math of big strikeout hitters first year in AAA and first extended action in the Majors comparing the K-rates. Player (AAA K-rate/MLB K-rate) Ryan Howard (31.5%/32.1%) Mark Reynolds (24%/35.2%) Adam Dunn (24.3%/30.3%) Grady Sizemore (17.2%/24.6%) Curtis Granderson (29%/26.5%) Joe Borchard (31.7%/28.3%) Jack Cust (23%/26.6%) Everyone's K-rate went up except Borchard and Granderson. Borchard though had two season at the MLB level that gave him like 60 at-bats and 70 at-bats, so I didn't include those because the sample size I didn't deem big enough. Together, they aveage an increase of 3.4% at the major league level. Maybe Danks could pull a Granderson and cut his K-rate at the MLB level, but I am guessing he would fall more in line with the rest. The problem is, which of those players does Danks have as much power as? Sizemore maybe? Sizemore owns him in contact rate so that doesn't really apply. I have a FutureSox post a few touches away from being posted on this subject. You and I agree.

Jon Gilmore: 10 Game Tease or Breakout Candidate?
danman31 replied to Ozzie Ball's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) I remember thinking he reminded me a lot of the Brandon Allen path. Hopefully he progresses like Brandon. Yeah, Allen even repeated Kannapolis instead of going to W-S like Gilmore at this age. Power hitters tend to develop later. I don't get the same vibe from Gilmore though. -
Trayce Thompson goes yard for his first professional home run.

8 of Danks' 13 hits so far this season have gone for extra bases.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 17, 2010 -> 06:37 PM) That will go up or down depending on what he does when the game is over. Really? Stats change in the middle of a game? No way.
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Apr 17, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) He means Teahen is a below avg. fielder which is true and Konerko has little to no range even if he is great at picking balls in the dirt. Yes, my point is that Gilmore is worse than that. You can't put Teahen and Konerko in the same class as him.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 17, 2010 -> 12:57 AM) Kinda cool to know only the corner IF spots are your weakest defensively and really are not Konerko and Teahen bad. Not sure what you mean about Konerko and Teahen being really bad, but Gilmore certainly is terrible at 3rd.
