QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ May 31, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) Duane loves to take college pitching but maybe shift the focus. I still prefer college pitching, but I think the key is to look at the two guys the Sox have taken in the first round the last two years. Broadway came out of nowhere and was a big time riser right before the draft. He has done fairly well in the minors, but has a limited ceiling. The jury remains out on him. McCulloch is looking like an early bust, he has put up very mediocre numbers at high A this year and when the Sox took him he was thought of as a slight reach. His junior year numbers at Texas weren't as good as his sophomore year numbers and some believe (Jason included) his stuff isn't as good as it used to be. The McCulloch pick was a gamble because his junior season was disappointing and led him to fall to the late first round. The Sox were hoping he would be back to his form from the previous year and would be a steal, instead he has shown that his stuff may have fallen off a bit. Probably early to write him off, but the point is the Sox took a safer pick in Broadway and a somewhat riskier pick in McCulloch. There will still be high ceiling college pitchers with minimal question marks late first round, especially in a deep draft this year.

I'm gonna see Pitts tomorrow as he will start against Miami in their regional opener. Chris Carpenter of Kent State is also supposed to be an early round pick, with first round murmurs, and he will face Mizzou in the night game. Hopefully Pitts wows me and Carpenter gets rocked.

Scherzer signed too ($4.3 million) Good for Max. I saw him pitch at Mizzou a couple times, but injuries kept me from seeing him more. I've never seen a guy dominate hitters like he did, but that doesn't really say much heh. His fastball is unreal, supposedly his secondary stuff is coming around. Hitters would sit on it knowing if he could locate the fastball they were basically screwed (we've seen how Jenks is without control of his secondary stuff). I hope he does well, he put up good numbers for Fort Worth, but the scouting reports weren't as good. Who knows.

QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ May 31, 2007 -> 01:49 AM) O'Connor is a die hard White Sox fan. He's the one that skipped his senior year of high school to play on FSU a year early. How is he doing?

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ May 28, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) Missouri being a regional host after losing so many pitchers last year is pretty impressive, especially when Max Scherzer (although he was injured for Mizzou parts of the year) is one of them. Missouri's pitching is basically all underclassman, so this could be a intersting CWS for them. Regardless, this year will be a good learning tool for next year when they will be one of the top 5 teams in the country, especially if they can get Nick Tepesch (top 70 player in the nation) to go to college. Yeah, I can't wait to go to the regional this weekend and next year should be amazing. Holst is the only senior on the staff and the two juniors aren't going to get drafted so it should be fun next year. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 28, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) Outside of ECU, I love those matchups. Playing UNC in any sport is ECU fan's World Series, or Super Bowl or whatever you want to call it. Funny thing, the selection committee put Western Carolina and Wofford in the same regional and they are in the same conference which isn't allowed. So they swapped Wofford and Jacksonville from the South Carolina regional. So UNC is paired with ECU, Western Carolina, and Jacksonville. Jacksonville is 34-26 (15-12) from the Atlantic Sun. They're probably better than Wofford, who was 9th in their conference but ran the conference tournament.

Louisville 4, Charlotte 1 Owens 1-4, 2B Fields 1-4, 2B, K (while playing SS again) Anderson 1-3, R, K Haeger 6 IP, 4 R Homer Bailey simply owned the Knights, shouldn't be too much longer before he is in the bigs with the numbers he is putting up. It's not Faustino's fault he gave up 3 runs. He was clearly left in too long and the relief behind him didn't get the job done.
-
So this means the Sox are gonna bring up two hitters to replace Ozuna. I'm thinking Gonzalez and Owens, even though I feel stupid for not saying Sweeney.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ May 27, 2007 -> 11:46 AM) They also don't count as an official at-bat making the original question a trick question. Gaedel has 0 career at-bats. Ok great, but Kalapse said walks count as total bases, which isn't correct.
-
Yeah, Honel is probably done, but it shows how good his stuff is/was if he can still be a competent AA pitcher throwing mid/high 80s.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ May 25, 2007 -> 09:51 PM) Good Eye Jim Jim. I am so tempted to let JD bunt here, I just don't trust him with the double play. What makes you think Dye has any experience bunting?

Walks don't count as total bases or in slugging.

QUOTE(bmags @ May 25, 2007 -> 01:42 AM) I never use ratemyprofessor, i find it useless, the only real tool you need and I use is the grade distribution the school provides, showing the avg. GPA handed out, and even amt. of A's, B's, C's etc. Yeah, thanks to some guy at the student success center telling me that.

Trading Crede sounds all well and good but Fields is hitting .310 in May in AAA and you guys are acting like he would be ready this year. Everyone would be pissed at KW if he traded Crede and Fields was slumping like he did this April. Imagine those numbers against big league pitching...oye.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 24, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) Brewer was probably the best player for Florida during the tourney. The kid's lengthy as hell -- isn't he 6"9? -- and one of the best real athletes in the draft. The thing is though, he's an athlete who can flat out play. He's tough matchup for anyone who goes up against him because of his length, he can take it to the rim and finish, he can pull-up and he can hit the three. If either of Horford or Brewer happen to fall to nine, I'd hate to see the Bulls pass. Totally agree on Brewer. I would LOVE to see the Bulls take him, need or not. He's a better Sef. We already have Deng and Noc and Sef is the big 2. Maybe if the Bulls think Brewer is gonna be top 5 they could trade the 9 and Sef for Brewer and a 2nd rounder or something. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 24, 2007 -> 11:11 PM) If I were a Cavs fan I would be absolutely livid. LeBron got absolutely RAPED on that drive with ten seconds left and no call. He got hit before his spin move and as he was going up, yet nothing. Ehh, I didn't think it was a foul. If I was a Cavs fan I'd be more pissed at Larry Hughes for missing a 7 footer. Talk about a goat. He was WIDE open. -
The Big Ten is a mid-major league in baseball. His numbers are good, but it's not the greatest of competition and as far as I know a hitters' league as well. That said, it's all about defense for catchers. I wouldn't mind taking him in the teens or later, but he's not a top 10 round pick IMO.

McCulloch with a decent outing: 6 IP, 1 R but a WHIP of 1.83 on the day. He is sporting a WHIP of 1.58 on the year, but somehow his ERA is under 4. He has allowed 11 unearned runs however. One impressive thing: he's only given up 1 HR this year.

I dislike the new segment called 'that's nasty'. It's all breaking balls and they aren't always that great. Web Gems is great, but the show has dropped off otherwise. I don't mind Kruk and Reynolds was starting to lose his mind his last year or two anyway, but I just can't get into it. Some of the analysts are bad and they are rotating too much. Destrade or whatever his name is, is awful. I'm so sick of hearing him and Pedro Gomez do nothing but report on Bonds.

I'd love to take credit for 'calling' this guy, but all I did was see the numbers from his first outing this year and his DSL numbers. The interesting part about him is that in the DSL he had 61 Ks to 10 BBs in 48.1 IP. The control there is great, so it's almost surprising that his control is a problem this year. Then again, it was the DSL, it's not like those guys take a lot of walks.

From an milb.com article concerning his stuff: And love from BA (he made the 'helium watch' segment of the prospect hot sheet):

Carter made Baseball America's prospect hot sheet this week at #20.
