Halladay out for Season
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 09:32 PM) Nah, it was always 'maybe next week', 'I'll give you guys 2 days' notice', etc. I shoulda known. Only consistent pitcher on my fantasy team=doomed. f*** man, I'm right there with ya. This one definitely hurts. I held off making a big deal for a pitcher at the trade deadline in my money league because Halladay was supposed to be back.

From strictly a baseball fan's point of view
I absolutely loved watching last night's ballgame, despite the outcome. That's what baseball is all about, those guys (pitchers and D) left it all out on the field, Chi and Min. That put those close yankee games in NY to shame, IMO. It's been awhile since I've watched a game and was seriously on the edge of my seat for nearly every pitch. Freddy was pitching not only for his team, but for his venezuelan pride. Santana was pitching to keep hope alive for his entire team, while trying to prove to Freddy why he's the best pitcher out of venezuela. The D on both sides knew the importance of the game in the standings, while the Sox D laid it all on the line to keep Freddy's hope at the no-no intact. I have no idea how in the hell so many people can call baseball boring.

If your gonna whine and jump off a cliff
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 24, 2005 -> 02:22 AM) I don't care if f***ing God is pitching. You get more than 3 hits. That's all I ask. Please, don't even try to spin this one guys. hey, we could be the twins, they only had 1 hit.

If your gonna whine and jump off a cliff
I didn't expect to win tonight against Santana. Freddy pitched a helluva a ballgame, deserved the win, didn't get it. It was a s***ty way to lose, but I know that many on this board expressed their tempered expectations for tonight's game against the hottest pitcher in MLB.

Our best pitcher right now is Contreras
BOS is going to be a thorn in our sides with neither MB or Contreras being effective against them. Chances are that if we see BOS it will be in the best of 7 ALCS, which will more than likely require a 4 man rotation...don't know how much I like that. As far as Count being in the playoff rotation, I'm not completely convinced yet. I can't think of a game with more pressure than his gem in NY against his former mates in front of a crowd that despises him. That outing showed that he appears to be turning a corner because that game REQUIRED a strong mental approach, and he definitely had his brain working the right way. If he keeps this up over the rest of the season, you've got to really consider him worthy of a rotation spot. Same with Mark, he looks completely lost on the mound in his last few starts. He's gotten consistently bombed by 2 teams who could be our opponents in the playoffs. I mean s***, if a team has him figured out and has proven they'll run him out of a ballgame in a hurry, why the hell would ozzie start him, especially in a game 1? There's no doubt that if MB gets back to pitching the way he was earlier in the season, he'd warrant that #1 slot, but not if he can't get it back together by the end of the season. The dude earlier posted our rotation's #s for the season, let's look at the last month, that's what's important. Come Oct, whatever MB did in May is completely useless, if he's off, he's off. We've just got to trust Ozzie. It's not like he'd be sitting an RJ or Santana, a near guaranteed win. Our rotation is much different than most playoff staffs being we've got 5 starters who are all capable of shutting an offense down, but cannot be counted on to shut an offense down. You've got to go with the hot hands.

Is Greg Walker's job in jeopardy?
QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 03:19 AM) Please refer to my post in some other thread...hold on let me copy it over here Sorry about that man, just read that other thread after posting this...mod can merge if they want. That's the difficult thing, with an 11 game lead and the best record in the AL, it certainly becomes difficult to justify the firing of a coach. But at the same time, should a team be more proactive than reactive? All firings obviously are reactive to a degree, but firing Walker at this point, after a month long offensive slump, would be proactive, the kind of ballsy decision that an organization has to make. If you wing it with Walk based upon the team's record, while ignoring that that record is mostly the result of excellent D and pitching, you accept mediocrity, imo. If the org gets proactive, letting the players know that these s***ty atbats/approaches will not stand, it sends a message while there's still time to improve prior to the playoffs. When the weather gets cold in OCT and the offense continues to swing for the fences, we're going to be in a world of hurt.

Is Greg Walker's job in jeopardy?
Since Aug 1st, we're averaging 3.4RPG in series against BAL, TOR, SEA, NYY, BOS and MIN. MIN and BOS are the only two of those teams that you could consider having a decent starting staff. Take out the 1 game we scored 8 runs against BOS (which we of course lost) and our average drops to a weak 3.0RPG this month. Now I really don't believe that Walk's job is in jeopardy, but should it be considering we've basically got 2 guys in our lineup hitting the ball right now? Most of these "slumps" aren't so much slumps as just flawed approaches at the plate. The Sox are striking out at an alarming pace and our BA is plummeting, meanwhile most of our scoring comes via the longball. Smartball? Obviously the hitting coach and players aren't on the same page as the manager.

wow, who thought it was this bad
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) August batting averages BA/OBP/HR/RBI (In Podsednik's case it's stolen bases and runs instead of home runs and rbis) Podsednik .138/.167/2/2 Iguchi .259/.333/1/2 Dye .222/.329/0/1 Crede .130/.167/1/1 Uribe .133/.278/0/0 Perez .200/.333/0/1 whoa....this is a serious funk we are in. I know it's only 8 games, but sheesh...that's a bad eight games. Pierzynski, Rowand and Konerko are all hitting the cover off the ball in August, but the rest of the team is seriously awful right now. Everett was hitting .286 in August when he went down... I guess the good news is that even with this funk we are 4-4 in August.... Regardless of what others may think, I think you've put something that we've all known into #'s...thanks. I wouldn't say that we've had a very good offense at any point this season, but right now these guys are downright horrible. Non-strikeout pitchers are ringing up a hefty portion of our lineup, the short pop outs are becoming epidemic, as is the lack of clutch hitting. We're in a unique situation when compared with other playoff bound teams, our pitching is what's getting us there. Problem is that we can't count on the pitchers/defense to hold teams like the yankees, bosox, and anaheim to one run every game. The offense needs to SOMEHOW scrape together atleast 3 runs nearly every night. El Duque pitched one helluva ballgame last night, leaving everything he had on mound (110+pitches on his weak arm) and walked away with a loss. Think he'll feel some pressure in his next start? Pitchers shouldn't walk onto the mound knowing that they're already in a deficit because the O can't score. Solutions? I don't know, I really don't know what's happened. You can't exactly teach clutch hitting. Some guys don't look like they're taking the proper approaches in certain situations, but outside of that guys are just choking at the plate. I understand the trade market was absolute horses***, but I'm starting to become concerned that we're going to pay dearly for not getting a high contact/mediocre power LH hitter. I understand that KW did his best, but man, what a bad year for a s*** market.

Have a cell phone?
I don't have one. I've had them in the past but found that the convenience wasn't worth the cost. I was distracted on the road if I was talking while driving. Family and friends always getting calls at inopportune times (dinner, golf course, etc.) really doesn't put me in the mood to get one anytime soon. Although, the wife is expecting here in about a month so she's trying to push me into getting one again. yuck.

Atlanta..........
I lived in Atlanta for awhile and you obviously haven't made it far from your hotel to check out the city. There are definitely nice parts in the city...check out Buckhead, Virginia-Highland, Little Five Points, Midtown, Centennial Park... lots to do. Sounds like your hotel is right near the airport which is in a s***ty area, I don't know who in the hell told you that that was a nice part of Atlanta. Anything South of 20 and north of McDonough is ghetto, like avoid it if you can kinda ghetto. Downtown is just like any other downtown area, there are nice parts and s*** parts...you've just got to know where to go.

Ryan Franklin
QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) Steroids aren't the only answer for players getting busted by the new policy. For Bears fans, I'm sure you all remember Jim Miller getting suspended 4 games for violating the NFL's substance abuse program. He never took steroids, but there was a banned substance in the suppliment he was taking that made him fail the drug test. I'm not sure about what substances are banned by major league baseball, but I'd say that there's a good possibility that Palmiero and Franklin could have a similar case as Jim Miller. I've got no pity for these guys, even if they fail due to a supplement. If you make millions of dollars a year in MLB, you better damn well know EXACTLY what you're putting in your body everytime you take a vitamin or supplement. A pro athlete's livelihood is based on their body, they should know more about what they ingest than any other living person....Jim Miller included.

Jenks-Sweeney Conversation
Great article. I remember in '03, checking out the Royals MLB board, Sweeney actually posted on there a few times (and yes, it was him). Very religious guy from reading his main note/post. I also heard on the Sox/Royals broadcast that Sweeney had asked Runelvys if hitting Carlos Guillen (Det/KC brawl) was intentional, to which Elvys replied it was not. Apparentl, Sweeney called Carlos Guillen to let him know that there was no bad intent and would hope that there's no hard feelings. Classy, definitely classy.

White Sox preserve core at deadline...
I don't think it could be much more obvious that the market just wasn't there for us to make an impact trade. You shouldn't just make a move for the sake of making a move, especially when you're 30+ games over .500 with a 13 game lead in your division. Could we use a bat? Sure, but we've also scored 41 runs in our last 6 games. Could we use a bp arm? Sure, but as we stand now our staff ERA is amongst the best in baseball. Could we use a utility IF? Yeah, it was a GLARING weakness and KW filled it. I think MB hit the nail on the head in the posted article, the Sox aren't in a position to overpay for decent, not great, decent talent (Huff, Baez, Vizquel, Burnett). If it were a matter of overpaying just a bit, I'm confident that KW would have made the move (see El Caballo trade, which we certainly did overpay for Pods) while having faith that the player he's targeted will be a stronger, more valuable contributor to the vision he has in his head. So, knowing that KW won't hesitate to overpay a bit if necessary, it's clear that those selling GMs were asking for ridiculous returns on their trades. There was not ONE blockbuster deal that went down, that really says a lot about this season's parity as well as the state of the market.

Latest news on Huff and Baez
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:50 AM) yeah and what is he doing this year. Look Tracey, Sweeny, and another prospect however Chuck LaMar has a history of asking for the moon. Huff can't play defense because he is a BUTCHER with the glove. Sweeny is the number 3 prospect on the sox however to ask for Anderson, McCarthy, and maybe young is BS. Look it has to be a fair deal for both sides however all LaMar is doing is asking for the moon. Would you rather we stand pat? Personally, I wanna take advantage of the opportunity '05 has presented us. Also, I'd be willing to bet Huff's #'s will increase if he comes to chicago, not only because he'll be hitting in the Cell, but also because he'll actually be playing for a shot at the postseason year in and year out.

Ramirez White Sox?
If this happens, Rowand or Dye will no longer be with the Sox. The Red Sox are not going to be looking for prospects, especially with Nixon down. You could be looking at Pods patrolling CF, Manny in LF, and Dye in RF. That's a tremendous downgrade in defense. Is it worth the money and defense to add Manny's bat, not to mention his attitude? I don't know.

Wagner Rumor from Phillies Post Game
While i absolutely despise giving up McCarthy for a rental, atleast we'll be dealing him for the far-and-away best rental that's available. As we've discussed to no end on Soxtalk, Wagner would have a real impact on this Sox team and this deal epitomizes the idea that you have to trade the future for the now. Now if we could somehow pull Vizquel from SF, we'd have a very successful trade season, IMO.

GAME THREAD 7-26-2005 SOX vs ROYALS
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 03:34 AM) How many other teams do you see just do mass subs like Ozzie does? And please don't give me the best record argument, because our record is crap with the B squad this season. The whole mentality of the team is different when you're benching 2 or 3 everyday starters. Would you say that our fresh bench has had any impact on our record this season? Do you believe that our starters are happy that they know they'll get days off while, at the same time, our bench players are happy because they know that they'll get to see a good bit of playing time? Did you honestly believe that we'd lose this game with MB on the mound against Lima, regardless of the # of bench players starting? I can't believe that Sox fans have the nerve to get on a guy who appears to have a unanimous lock on manager of the year. There's a reason for that clubhouse chemistry every player raves about, and his name is Ozzie and his uncanny ability to satisfy nearly everyone on a team and make them feel needed and important.

GAME THREAD 7-26-2005 SOX vs ROYALS
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 03:31 AM) Get outta here. These are fit, Major League baseball players. If they can't take it, get off the field. Yipeee, Jizz walks the lead-of guy. 162 games in 6 months, or 162 games in roughly 180 days. I guess you're right, Ripken's streak really wasn't very impressive.

GAME THREAD 7-26-2005 SOX vs ROYALS
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 03:29 AM) The thing is, this frustration is just more than one game. It's the fact that Ozzie has been using RIDICULOUS lineups far too often this season. We were statistically much worse in those games than we were in games where we were playing the A squad. Now, with tonight's debacle, maybe people will finally start telling Ozzie to quit benching 3 starters every 4th game, etc. So would you prefer to see the team minus 1-2 starters every game? They've got to get their rest and anyone who thinks otherwise is nuts.

GAME THREAD 7-26-2005 SOX vs ROYALS
We'll be glad Ozzie rests guys come playoff time...resting not only leads to fresh starters but also to warm bench players. Sucks this one got away from us, but it's a grueling season and the Oz man needs to keep his eye on the big picture.
