  1. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 01:09 PM) If those guys are going to hit so many homers, then why do the guys around them have to be fast? They can walk around the bases ala Victor Martinez. I'd rather focus on OBP. We'll need those small ballers/speedsters to produce on days where the big bats don't. As far as mentioning our power with Cleveland's, I wouldn't do that. Even Cleveland has Grady stealing 30 plus bases a year at the top and added a guy like Kenny Lofton late in the year to help manufacture things. It should be noted that Grady would steal a lot more bases but the guy had 92 extra base hits last year.
  2. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:49 PM) Wisconsin just tried a fake punt on 4th and 3 at their own 25 and don't get it. Really stupid decision by their coaching staff. I've been watching the game all day and they've just rolled the dice way too often. Good effort on behalf of the Badgers, though.
  3. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) This is true. You can bunt all you want, but if your pitching staff has the 12 th lowest ERA in the AL, you're going to battle for the cellar. Yeah but you do need to manufacture runs. I know this is kind of a pointless age old argument, but you need day to day consistency. This lineup lacks table setters and Damon can be that, but his durability/price tag at this point in his career is suspect at best. A lineup that consists of PKo, Thome, Dye, AJ and Fields is a lineup that should hit 200 HR. We just need to add in our speedy table setters in front and behind them.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:51 PM) I don't care about overall speed. It's all about finding more guys who can get on-base. I'm still of the belief that Ozzie Guillen is not the proper manager for a team with a 3-4-5 of Thome, Konerko, and Dye. I'm cringing at all the talk about having everyone on the team bunt, etc. With our mediocre pitching staff, playing for one run isn't going to help. That's not a bad way to look at things. However, when we do get guys on base they have to pose a threat. Damon did steal 27 bases last year but that number is almost a lock to decline. He turns 34 in a few days and there is always something wrong with him. Damon is done IMO. If he weren't, the Yanks would want to hold onto him. I want a team that Ozzie wants. A team that when we are on base is capable of taking 2nd with 2 outs or at least making an opposing manager hold a runner at 1st every time that runner is on and opening up a hold on the right side of the IF. I'm all for building the type of team that Ozzie wants and I believe we can do that with Konerko, Thome and Dye in the lineup. We just have to build around those thumpers in the middle.
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:45 PM) I don't want Owens anywhere near the starting lineup for the Sox. Let him be the 5th outfielder/designated pr. So what do you envision for our starting lineup? If it's going where you think it should...that's all we need to do is get slower.
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:40 PM) Yes, because if you're trading projected starting players on this team, bringing in a fringe major league with mediocre stuff isn't going to help this franchise. Maybe it's me, but competition in spring training might be the most overrated aspect in all of sports. It isn't as much the competition as much as providing another option for our coaching staff. Clearing Crede would allow Fields to step in and play 3rd as well, so it's not like we'd be losing a projected starter when we're going to go after a new CF anyway. This is also assuming Owens moves over to LF. It should also be noted that a deal like this would save us around 6 or 7 million to go towards a FA or a big contract we're about to trade for.
  7. QUOTE(max power @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) Dumping hall seems pretty dumb right now. Sell low, huh? I agree, it'd be stupid as s***.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:34 PM) Damon is the player I was talking about. I don't consider Gio, Floyd, or Danks anything more than AAAA right now. So bringing in another player to compete with those guys in Spring is a bad idea? You lost me.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:25 PM) We have enough AAAA pitchers in our system right now. If you trade Crede, and have the chance to get a major league starting player in return, you make that trade. Like who?
  10. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) Will people please stop using the ERAs for people in the IL as a reason a pitcher might be good! The caliber of hitting in the IL has never been worse. I'd just like to see us get another arm to compete for a rotation spot because I believe we'll deal Garland and I HOPE we deal Contreras as well. And as far as FA goes this year for SP....I hope we can stock pile a few more young arms to compete with Danks, Floyd and Gio for back end spots.
  11. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:11 PM) DeSalvo sucks. I'd have no problem with a Crede for Damon trade, as long as the Yanks throw in some money. He had a 2.70 ERA in AAA last year and has a great changeup. He doesn't have overwhelming stuff but he really knows how to pitch. If the Damon/Crede deal were to go down- there is no doubt the Yanks would throw in a chunk of dollars.
  12. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 12:00 PM) If the Yankees pick up some of Damon's contract it could be a good deal. Fields is not a LF. Considering they aren't having him work on it this winter speaks volumes IMO. Fields does make some great plays at 3rd, and some horrid ones. I'm not all that high on him, but I do find him adequate defensively, with what seems like a desire to improve. I'd like to see him make more contact. I see him in the on deck circle with a short stroke that gets very long when he gets to the plate. Well hopefully you want Damon in the capacity that he would be a LF for us. Damon can't play CF anymore and the Yanks know it.
  13. QUOTE(daa84 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines this could mean so long crede...and hello damon perhaps? that would certainly shift fields from left back to 3b. Hopefully it's for a AAA arm that can compete for a back end rotation spot next year. I know it's a reach to say that, but if the Yanks really want Crede to be their starting 3Bagger, I'd have to think they'd be willing to part with one of their young arms. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to be one of their top tier young arms or anything crazy like that. But perhaps for a Matt DeSalvo who is like 4th in line to make their MLB rotation.
  14. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 09:58 AM) I want Furcal. I'll end up with Uribe or Eckstein. I think we'll end up with Furcal. It may cost us Garland, however I'm sure the Dodger would throw in Brazoban to make the deal work. Brazoban just had TJ last year, but should be back playing in the bigs by June.
  15. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 10:04 AM) Wow, I'm shocked by this. Let's just crown his ass. haha. Seriously, his next 15 effort will probably be in December, but good point, he's erased everything from the past. Tyrus is the most talented player we have. Tyrus hit four or five 17 foot jumpers last night. If he continues to do that, he'll average 15 pts/game for the year. His biggest problem is getting in early foul trouble, which significantly cuts into his PT. Another problem is how Skiles is all over Noc late in the game and Noc always plays the 4 in the 4th quarter. If Ty can get 35-40 minutes a night consistently, the sky is the limit ALREADY this season for him.
  16. QUOTE(buckweaver @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 07:55 AM) Anyone who retains Boras as his agent, to me, has questionable character. As much as I hate Boras (I'm tired of saying that leading into posts), You can't hate a player for wanting to make as much money as possible. It's hard to say we wouldn't all be doing the same thing.
  17. We wouldn't get Melky straight up for Crede who is just coming off of back surgery. I think a more likely candidate would be Matt DeSalvo. DeSalvo is a polished product at 27 years old- great college pedigree and had a 2.70 ERA in AAA last year. DeSalvo could come in and be our 5 guy next year. The Yankees would be willing to part with DeSalvo because they hold several young SP prospects over him. (Hughes, Kennedy, Sanchez and Chaimberlain). The Yanks also have several other big time arms in Betences, Garcia and Clippard that project has starters as early as '09 or '10. DeSalvo could be had for Crede if the WSox decided they wanted to move Fields back to 3rd.
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) He's not going to get 6 years, it'll be 4 or 5 at the most and as for the contract that he supposedly turned down, according to Hunter a legitimate offer was never even made by the Twins. I'm not worried about the 4th or 5th year of the deal because the first 3 should be pretty damn good by that 4th he'll be slower but probably still hitting for good power and making all the plays he's capable of getting to in the OF. And yes, some people are worried about the first few years of the deal. When claims of "career years" and "he's a mediocre player" are being made, then it's not just the last year or 2 of the deal that people are worried about. I don't see anyone offering him more than 5 guaranteed years, if someone like Tom Hicks decides to do so then bully for him he can have Torii. But $13M-$14M a year over 4 or 5 years doesn't scare me all that much. What else are the Sox going to spend that money on? The payroll will likely be in the 100's for the foreseeable future and there's no players aside from Garland (who is pretty much out the door) that are looking for big money in the coming years and the free agents aren't going to get any cheaper. The money is there and the player is a good fit. Hunter will get 5 yrs/75 mil minimum. A 4 year deal? In FA? No way in hell.
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) You're delusional. I'm still waiting for you to back any of this up. How is he mediocre? HIS HUGE CONTRACT SEASON WAS NOT THAT MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT HE HAS DONE IN YEARS PAST. You act like he's been a .750 OPS player for every year of his career until last year when he shot up to .950. Last year was the 4th .800+ OPS season of his career and only 13 OPS points better than his 2006 numbers hell even 2005 was .789. THAT'S NOT MEDIOCRE. You can keep saying that he's slowed down in the OF but the Cell is one of the smallest centerfields in the league and he's still going to make all the plays. He's 32 years old, you act like he's 38. It isn't the short term that anyone is worried about regarding Hunter. It's the 6yr/90 million he wants. Do you really want to owe this guy 30 million when he's 37? Do you really want to be on the hook for that? Let some other team suffer that horrible contract.
  20. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:30 PM) I wouldn't really trust anything I read from a newpaper out of New Jersey LOL, the StarLedger is a good sports paper, though.
  21. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:25 PM) Furcal hopefully... And this obsession people have with Hunter is sickening. Face it, Hunter is old and just is a little better then a mediocre player who had a huge contract season. 5 years 90 million for Hunter would be one of the worst moves in baseball. Thank you. It's nothing against Hunter, but he isn't worth that much money long term. If we could get him for 3 yrs/45 million then fine...but Minny offered him that same deal and he turned it down. He will get a minimum of 5yr/75 mil...which is ridiculous for Hunter. I'd rather stomach Owens for another year at a 40th of the price.
  22. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) im just saying eckstien would be cheaper because isnt furcal making 13-14 mill? i dont think eckstein will even get 10. how about that rumored deal from the past 2 years, garland in a deal for tejada? I think we're going to wait on Senator Mitchell's announcement on what players were juiced before we deal for our SS. I like the thought of getting Tejada, though...maybe not for Garland, but we'd have to give up something substantial.
  23. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) i would love to get furcal. great defensively and he could be our leadoff hitter. eckstien would be cheaper and we wouldnt have to give anything to get him though...anyone but uribe We had better stay the hell away from Eckstein. Cheaper than Furcal? Eckstein is probably going to get a Lugo like contract at 4yr/36 mil. When Eck goes into his little slumps, he's worthless to have. If we give him big bucks I'll be pissed. I absolutely do NOT want us to deal Garland for Furcal, but hell I'd rather do that than sign Eckstein.
  24. This is such a gray area. I work in Law Enforcement (you could probably guess exactly what) and I've taken complaints on this kind of thing, but it's always a civil issue. I have heard much worse than this and it has gone to civil courts and dismissed. So as far as "Mary" taking action...it wouldn't even be worth trying. If it has made her as uncomfortable as she claims (rightfully so if that's the case) then she should just find a new job. It's sad and perhaps unfair advice, but it is what it is. Her boss is a creep IMO for commenting on her body no matter how casual he said it.
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) WTF? This guy is built out of egg shells Thank the lord that's the case...the m'fer throws f***ing hard.
