  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 06:18 AM) A little more data on this... the guy was drafted, had TJ on his elbow shortly after, missed all of 2011, pitched in limited action in 2012. Then apparently, this year, on the FIRST DAY of workouts, he blew out his knee. When faced with the prospect of another surgery, another year of rehab, etc., he decided to retire. Can't really blame him. Feel awful for the guy. Gotta have more mental toughness than that. Injuries are just part of the deal when you play sports. I've blown out both knees in the past 5 years so I know what it's like and I'll tell you that feeling sorry for yourself and quitting doesn't help you heal any faster.
  2. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:40 PM) Well, then you do it after your current, cheaper and somewhat promising options fail, not in advance of it. Besides, who's to say there won't be another Lohse-like player next year? It's one thing to stay ahead of your looming problems. It's another to cause more problems by tying up money when you don't need to. Also, the inability to afford $12M doesn't mean you need to rebuild. That's a non-sequitur. You can max out your budget with an awful team or a great one. There are always Lohse type players available to sign, I think of guys like Carlos Silva, Javier Vasquez, Edwin Jackson, and many more. Guys who parlay a decent season and "potential" into these 10 mil+ per season contracts. They almost never work out, and Id be more than happy to spend that money on a better 3B, a younger catcher, first baseman or any of a litany of other positions where we actually need help as opposed to an older pitcher who may or may not even be an upgrade over who we already have in Santiago/Quintana. Id say that absolute best case scenario Lohse gives you 2 wins more this year than those two. Is that really worth the extra 11.5 million? I think not. Just because you can afford to spend the money doesn't mean that you should.
  3. Being born in Oregon, we don't have any pro sports teams other than the blazers, everyone else around here just adopts the seattle teams but I rebelled against that and had to go out of region to find teams to root for. Then I developed my first man crush with Frank Thomas as an 11 year old in 1992 and I've been a Sox guy ever since.

  6. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Aug 30, 2012 -> 08:09 PM) Who is this Todd Kibby fellow? I like the cut of his jibb. Dunno, not sure why he spent 2 years in bristol either.
  7. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 29, 2012 -> 08:47 PM) This dude has 42 errors. Edward Salcedo hes a butcher
  8. Man crush on Hawkins. With how quick we moved him up to low a ball I would have been satisfied it he'd just managed to not embarrass himself, but he's been just killing it since his promotion. Good K rates, lots of XBHs. I'm very excited to see what he does in a full season. Seems like he has the ability to make adjustments very quickly and his physical tools are obvious. Havent been this excited about a prospect since Gordon got drafted.
  9. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 06:29 PM) Shakespeare on Soxtalk? What next? Just trying to class things up a bit around here!
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 09:13 AM) Cool name. There's that. Might as well be HamLET, but Hanlet's close to Hanley, so there's hope in that direction. "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man".
  11. What a surprise, guess the team is finally willing to spend at least a little more on the draft instead of going cheap for so long.
  12. Golden sombrero for Mitchell
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 1, 2012 -> 07:31 PM) Nice day for Joey DeMichele, who proved to be too good for rookie ball. He's been promoted to Kannapolis I was wondering what he was doing in Bristol having played at a high level in a major college program. he's one of my favorite picks this year and I expect him to do well for us.
  14. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) Well, we saved money from our other signings, so we can freely use that money for Ayala. Ayala was offered 300k plus college tuition by the cardinals and said no, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be able to offer him more than 259K so there's no way he signs with us.
  15. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 12:12 AM) He looked awesome in what.....spring 2010? And had a pretty devastating injury. Ive come back from two knee surgeries and can say that it certainly takes its toll on your entire body, not just the body part that is injured. Not to mention the muscle atrophy that takes place, and the muscles atrophy at an alarming rate after that sort of leg injury.
  16. QUOTE (floridafan @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 07:35 PM) Eric Grabe Selected by White Sox My son Eric Grabe signed in the 24th Round and is now in Arizona. Heading to Bristol Tennessee around the 18th. We are thrilled! Well all right, tell us all about him. What can we expect to see from your boy?

  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) Geography teachers everywhere have to smashing their faces into the walls. At least Bristol is have in TN. Right next to the grammar teachers smashing their heads too.
  19. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) We need TSalad and KWalk to add significantly to their BA's, for them to become significant prospects. I hope they can. Neither is too old at this point, and the speed makes them interesting. Tossed Salad I don't believe is all that fast, his tools are pretty average across the board and this is the first year he's done anything on the basepaths. If i were to guess I'd say that hes probably just been really working on getting good reads and good jumps as by all reports he's a very heady player. Maybe JPN can say what kind of foot speed he has.
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 05:05 PM) Personally, Paulie isn't a hall of famer. However, if he does what he's done the past 2 years for another year or two, he gets into that mix. Hit 500 and I think you've sealed it, especially given the fact that his production has continued (and gotten better) after testing. Im not saying that he is at this point, Im just saying that to characterize his career as normal is asinine.
  21. Refer to the ESPN article I just posted referencing Pauly's HOF chances.
  22. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/...nerko-hall-fame Insiders only, but to paraphrase I can't believe how many times the author says that Konerko has had a solid, normal, or good career. That characterization blows me away. He even says "Finishing with 400 home runs and playing for 15 years isn't the stuff of legend and it doesn't result in becoming the namesake of many awards, but it's a better career than the vast majority of players have in them. Even for a former first-rounder and top prospect, it certainly would be grossly unfair to deem it a disappointment." I am by no means saying that he's a sure fire HOFer but he is one of only 48 players EVER to hit 400 HR's, throw on top of that a .285 career avg and close to 1300 rbi's and you have a tremendous baseball player. Any team would be thrilled to get that sort of production out of their first round selection in any draft. I guess this just goes to show how little respect Pauly gets, pisses me off for such a class act and such a great player.
  23. Ravelo with a bomb, Walker with 2 doubles and stole 3rd. 28 SB's on the season, if he can figure out how to get on base that guy has speed to burn.

  25. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 04:29 PM) Indeed they are. I don't expect them to take Stroman, just offering my opinion on him. You're probably right, he doesn't look the part of a major leaguer, but I just don't really care personally. Look at his numbers, look at the results, look at his raw stuff. I'll take performance over a guy who looks good getting off the bus any day of the week.
