QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 07:45 PM) This would be another example of: (a) a player deciding that the Cubs are the perfect place to play, what with all their "tradition" (Peavy waiving his no-trade clause) Along with all that tradition you get a perennially underachieving team with a bloated salary, ownership in disarray, and a home stadium that is falling apart at the foundation. That's cool though, if you think a 100 year losing streak qualifies as "tradition".

I'll take Juan Rivera on a one-year deal with an option. He hasn't gotten to play full time so will be looking to build value with a short deal.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:02 AM) You should look at my work on my 360 . I was able to do a string 20-30 trades for 5 hours straight. After everything was set and done, our rotation was Halladay,Santana,Lincecum,Webb and Peavy. I'm tired of Kenny going for these Dye for Bailey Deals! This is so frustrating! I can show him exactly how I traded Konerko and Uribe for Ervin Santana,Chone Figgins and Brandon Wood! well done -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:57 PM) No offense, but what the hell could you possibly know as fact? You're a Sox fan posting on a message board. What do you know that Kenny and his people don't? Kinda what I was getting at. -

I've also read that some of his problems seem to be not having the best mental approach to pitching. Well, I have quite a bit of faith that Buerhle, Cooper, and AJ will have something to say about that. Same problem with Floyd, million dollar arm but 10 cent brain. I know he's only had one good season but I still think that we've got as good a chance to turn Bailey and his pure stuff into a good if not great pitcher. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:52 PM) Coop can fix mechanics, he can't fix stuff. I've read a couple of scouts reports that said Homer's stuff is still elite. Fastball in the middle 90's, nasty curveball and one of the best sliders around. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:46 PM) Everything you put before the words "Using Dye" is true, but that's not even my biggest problem with this. It's clear, even though people won't admit it, that this team is rebuilding. However, to trade Dye for a reclamation project (one whose stuff has betrayed him) is a bad move both in a baseball sense and in the sense that it says to me, this is more that rebuilding, it's "let's go get them in 2010/quasi firesale" mode. I mean this isn't a firesale, but to dump 37 million dollars and get nothing in return to help you anytime soon (and no, Bailey won't help) screams "white flag". Not to mention that we could have got more for Dye than Bailey. No question. 1. This deal isn't set in stone yet. 2. Who could we get for Dye that's better than Bailey and how do you know this? 3. Would this theoretical better player also be cheap and under team control for 6 years? -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) What does everyone think about Mark Grudzielanek? He can be our starting 2B, and he'd probably only cost around $3 million per year for 2 years. Last year, he hit .300 with a .345 OBP. He's a very viable #2 or maybe even a #1 guy. I've never really paid attention to his defense, though. Yes or no? No, I'd like to think that one of Getz, Betemit, Lillebridge, or Nix will be able to give us good production from that position. -
You all can't see it but I'm doing my happy dance right now!!

QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:53 PM) leaving ticket prices the same doesn't mean more fans will come. I would argue that those fringe fans (moneywise) would not be renewing anyway this year with the economy the way it is. I also think that casual baseball fans will not be showing up as walk ups like usual.I think the sox know this already. In addition they are old and slow. Its the perfect time to dump high priced players for some young talent and again plan for an infused team after the economic crisis eases (2010) Personally the only thing I don't like about this trade is the return. I don't think its enough. If Freel was involved at least you have a leadoff hitter. Freel and Bailey would be my choice. By the way - Tampa's payroll - Low - they were right there, Twins payroll much lower than ours- They were just as good as us. Marlins always have a low payroll - they are always competitive. In these times build a new nucleus of players. I know many here are young, I saw my parents struggle in Viet Nam times, I saw 16 percent inflation in the late seventies, and cars lined up for gas at pumps that didn't have gas, but let me say what is happening now (just starting) will far outweigh anything anyone on this board will see for along time. I think the sox know this, and they know the tendency of there fan base. i'm not saying that you have to spend big to win, the yanks have shown this to us numerous times. I'm just saying that jacking up ticket prices and cutting salary significantly is a tough sell -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:37 PM) He has to ACCEPT the White Sox's offer of salary arbitration sometime in the next 75 minutes. At this point in time he's likely already gone to the White Sox with his decision, it's just yet to be reported. thanks for the info. I thought thats how it was but I've seen lots of reports of other players rejecting arb today and thought that maybe you had to turn the offer down

QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) Why do people think we will backfill payroll. Thats not what is happening here. We are getting much younger and cheaper and plan to have a good team in 2010. I think that it's a tough sell for the fans if you cut payroll by about 30 mil AND increase season ticket prices 11% while hurting your team's chances of competing in 2009. I think that they'd have to at least spend some of the savings just as a show of good faith to the fans. -

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:33 PM) Would they make the Homer Simpson "Doh" noise every time Bailey struck someone out at the Cell? we can only hope -
Who knows how arbitration works? Does OC have to reject it? If he does nothing does that implicitly mean that he accepts the offer of arbitration or does he have to contact the commissioner's office and tell them that he accepts arb???

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:24 PM) I'd be beyond stunned if he's in any of the Sox major league plans for 2009. Yeah me too but I've enjoyed watching him mash in the minors for the last couple of years, I'd like to see him get a shot at the squad. -

I'm hoping that this goes through. Maybe, just speculation here but we could bring up David Cook in ST and give him a shot at one of the corner OF spots although I'd be nervous going with him if we didn't have a backup plan. -
Ok, one last one, take a look at the smoke on the baseball, does that look like anything you might find on a phallus???? Or at least coming out of it?

In Rosenthal's column from the winter meetings today he said that O Cab has been told that Ramirez is the starter at SS and that he probably won't accept arb
-
Hasn't the deadline for OC to accept passed??? anyone know what he did???
-
If we deal Jenks it would have to be centered around Hart or Gamel
